CONSTRUCTIONOver the next five years, construction is expected to become the fastest growing employment sector in the country – with current growth figures predicting the creation of over 158,000 jobs nationally. However, the sector is facing a shortage of skills, across a range of trades.
To support the need for skills in this booming sector, we have invested £2.6m in a new, purpose-built construction centre, based at our Coast Road Campus in Wallsend.
You will learn from industry experts who have a wealth of knowledge and expertise in their field, with extra support from pastoral tutors who will keep you on track with your studies and make sure you are employer ready.

A REVOLUTION IN TECHNICAL EDUCATION
COMING SOON
What are T Levels?
T Levels are a new two-year level 3 technical programmes that will sit alongside apprenticeships and A Levels within a reformed skills training system, primarily aimed at 16-18 learners.
T Levels have been designed to create the skills revolution needed to meet the needs of our economy and are being developed in partnership with Government, business and education.
The introduction of T Levels aims to streamline technical education and focus on developing skills that sit within 15 industry routes. The first T Levels will be introduced in September 2020 with full roll-out intended by September 2024.
What’s in a T Level?
T Levels will be based on employer-designed standards and content, which will prepare students for highly skilled jobs and enable them to adapt to meet the skills needs of the future.
Students achieving a T Level will have the numeracy, literacy, digital skills and wider transferable skills, attitudes and behaviours needed to succeed in occupations relevant to their chosen route and the wider workplace of the future.
T Levels consist of a number of components;
• An approved technical qualification, from an approved awarding organisation
• Meaningful work placement with an employer lasting between 45-60 days in their chosen industry
• English, maths and digital requirements (English and maths at a minimum of Level 2)
• Any licence to practice requirements for that occupation
• Enrichment and tutorial time

South Shields Marine School is proud to be a distinguished, world-leading centre of excellence for marine education and training. Established in 1861, we are the longest operating maritime college in the UK - and our reputation is unsurpassed.
Our high-quality training programmes cover the entire spectrum of marine education and nautical sciences. These include: navigation, operations, marine and electrical engineering, communications, offshore and safety training.
COURSES:
Pre-Cadetship
The programme provides the knowledge and competencies required to be successful in securing a full cadetship. Students will develop a variety of skills through visits, classroom learning and practical sessions, and be encouraged to grow fully as individuals to develop excellent interpersonal and communication skills. This is a one year full-time programme. Students can then progress on to the next level.
Cadetship
Upon successful completion of the Level 3 Pre-Cadetship, students will be able to apply for any of the following three-year Officer Cadet training programmes, with sponsorship from a shipping company:
• Marine Engineering Officer Trainee Scheme (HNC/HND)
• Foundation Degree in Marine Engineering
• Foundation Degree in Marine Electrical/Electronics
• Merchant Navy Navigation Officer Trainee Scheme (HNC/HND)
• Foundation Degree in Marine Operations
“I chose to study at South Shields Marine School as a friend told me about the amazing opportunities that the college can offer. Travelling is one of the main reasons I chose to start this career and working at sea has opened so many doors for me which will set me up for the future. I would highly recommend a career at sea.”
Adam Marshall, HNC Marine Engineering
