A&A's credit line doubled to increase inventoriesA&A Music and Entertainment Inc. shouldhave enough stock to see it through theChristmas season after recently negotiating adoubling of its credit line.

A&A's line of credit had been $7 million, but is now up to $14 million. Toronto's LincolnCapital Corp., partial owners of the homeentertainment chain, has guaranteed up to $2million of the credit line. Securing the bankfinancing was aided in part by a July deal inwhich A&A obtained $2.5 million in financingfrom a numbered company controlled by threeLincoln directors. That move reducedLincoln's ownership to 36 per cent and gavethe numbered company a 51 per cent stake inA&A.

Lincoln also owns a 25 per cent share ofPioneer-Cango Petroleums, but A&A isconsidered the company's most importantasset. For the three months ended May 31,Lincoln reported a net loss of $2.1 million onrevenues of $11.6 million. Almost all of therevenue was from the company's investmentin A&A.

Lincoln took over A&A in April, 1991after the chain's previous owner, Sound InsightLtd., went bankrupt in January of that year andcollapsed under $60 million in debt fromrapid expansion. But because suppliers lostmillions of dollars when A&A originallyfolded, they have been reluctant to extendcredit for stock, making it difficult for thechain to maintain adequate inventories.

In May, A&A presented a business planto Lincoln which called for inventory levelsthat would both drive sales towards 1992'starget amount and give the owners anacceptable return on their equity. The recentdeal is expected to do just that, says DanWhitt, president and chief operating officer ofA&A. "Because we're basically paying cashfor our product and have been since April of1991, with very limited terms, we were notable to inventory our stores properly.

"By not having inventory, sales weren'tthere. And when sales aren't there, profitsdon't measure up to what you expect. But thegood news is, if that's your main problem, then that's a fixable problem. And we've gotthe tools to fix it with now."

Restocking of the stores is expected to becomplete by mid -September and the

Randy Lennox, MCA Canada's vice-presidentof sales, presents platinum award to EltonJohn for sales exceeding 100,000 units on hisalbum, The One, before his Aug. 19 show atToronto's Exhibition Stadium.

installation of a new computer system thatwill allow inventory to be managed from thehead office is also nearing completion.

In June, A&A closed six of its sevenstreet front, freestanding stores and Whittcredits the moves for eliminating a drain onthe company. There are 140 stores located inmalls and those locations are where thecompany will primarily focus its attention inthe future, despite a recent article in B illboardheadlined, Music Sales Shifting From Mall ToFreestanding Stores.

Whitt obviously disagrees with theheadline. "If you've got an achievablemarketing plan, good inventory, promptreplenishment of stock and you're reasonably

priced, then I think you can do business ineither a street front store or a mall.

"We're not excluding any freestandinglocations. If another opportunity came alongthat was freestanding, we'd take a look at itand, if it made sense, we'd open that store."

Whitt had just returned from last week's"successful" meeting of sales managers fromacross the country, and he was impressed bythe attitudes of the major labels toward thechain.

"We were very encouraged by the amountof support we got from the labels, in bothattending our meeting and in giving us theinformation about their new releases, and justbeing supportive. It was a welcomed feelingto have that team effort displayed by thelabels."

Guns N' Roses fans seek class action against DKDIt still has not been decided whether a class-action suit launched against concert promoterDonald K. Donald Productions and OlympicStadium officials for breach of contract willbe allowed to proceed.

During a recent concert at the Montrealstadium by Guns N' Roses, the band's leadsinger, Axl Rose, reportedly gave the finger tohis audience after 55 minutes on stage, andtold them to get a refund. DKD has not offereda refund to ticket holders, which prompted thepetitioning of the court. The show, includingFaith No More's 55 minutes, 75 minutes byMetallica, and the 55 minutes by Guns N'Roses, clocked in at just over three hours.

Apparently there was no on-stage timespecified in the Guns N' Roses contract. Theyhave been known to perform for an hour -and -a -half and up to three hours, but contractually, they weren't obligated or locked into an on-stage time for this particular date. Rose hasbuilt his popularity, at least in part, on beingunpredictable.

As one observerpointed out, as presentersof concerts, promoters aren't involved in theartistic production of the show.

There have been other artists who haveangered fans in Montreal. The 55 -minuteconcert by Harry Connick Jr. at Place Des Artsand the 62 -minute performance by Cher weredenounced as being too short, while the three -

Keith James to take overRawlco's Toronto stationThere is nothing official at press time, but ithas been strongly rumoured that Keith Jameswill exit his post of general manager of 820CHAM Country in Hamilton to take oversimilar duties at Rawlco's soon -to -go -on -theair FM country stereo station in Toronto.

Sources close to the Hamilton operationexpect the transfer will take place over thenext two weeks.

With the CRTC shelving the much soughtafter old CKO frequency, which Rawlco hadhoped to swap for its as yet non -operationalToronto frequency, it's expected the western -based group will be serving the Toronto marketwith FM stereo country before the end of theyear.

hour concert by Bruce Springsteen wascriticized as being too long.

Since the court has not yet made itsdecision, no one at DKD's offices would offerany comment. It's not believed, however, thatRose's comment of "get a refund" promptedhim to return any money to the promoter.

Quite often, promoters come under firefor their profit -motivated and bullying tactics, much of which could be eased with a littlepublic relations and openness to the press.

The profit margin for concerts bysuperstar acts is known to be very slim. It hasbeen estimated that the Guns 'N Roses concertgrossed $1.9 million, but expenses were morethan $1.7 million.

Adams cancels freeLabour Day concertThe proposed free Bryan Adams concert to beheld at Vancouver's Stanley Park on LabourDay has now been officially cancelled afterthe Vancouver parks board refused a demandby Adams' manager, Bruce Allen, to lift anattendance limit of 42,000 people.

The board voted 3-2 to turn down Allen'sdemand at a Monday meeting, saying therewasn't enough time to prepare for a biggerevent.

During his recent sold -out concert at MolsonPark In Barrie, Ont. (Aug. 22), Bryan Adamsand his manager Bruce Allen, presented 0107'sprogram director Joey Vendetta (centre) witha special diamond award for his million selling.Waking Up The Neighbours album,

  • Canadian unity tackled by new single recordingA lot of songwriters produced songs tocelebrate Canada's 125th birthday earlier thisyear, and now another song has been writtento promote national unity. There's a differencewith this one, though. The composer is abanker.

Duaine Hamilton of Belleville, Ont. waswatching the nightly news last Novemberwhen he asked himself, "What in the world iswrong with this country?" He immediately satdown and put his answer into a song. Twentyminutes later, the first draft of What's WrongWith Canada Today was completed.

Soon after, Hamilton was inspired towrite a second song, Canada For Me, which hehoped would unify Canadians.

Canadian acts to performat European showcasesCanadian acts will receive internationalexposure at three upcoming Europeanshowcases.

Toronto's Acid Test, Rail T.E.C. andTeknicolor Raincoats will join Halifax's Sloanfor a Sept. 14 bill at the University ofManchester in England.

London's Marquee Club will host TribalSon, Box Meat Revolution, Waiting For Jane,The Stomp, Slayed Angel and Morbidox onOct. 4. Tickets are to resemble Canadianpassports and Canadian beer will be available.

Rita Chiarelli and Long John Baldry havebeen invited to Berlin's fifth annualIndependent Days music festival from Oct.26-29. Additional Canadian acts may also beinvited.

CRTC accolades andlicence renewal to YTVThe CRTC has granted a full seven-yearrenewal of YTV's licence for its nationalEnglish -language speciality service.

The commission also gave approval fora one-time rate increase in YTV's anglophoneand francophone markets (Decision CRTC92-571). The new licence term is effectivefrom Sept. 1, 1992 to Aug. 31, 1999.

In announcing the renewal, CRTCchairman Keith Spicerpointed out that "YTV'sdiverse line-up of programming is one of theCanadian broadcasting system's real successstories, offering Canadian youth an importantalternative designed to meet their specificinterests and needs."

Spicer also pointed to the off -screencontribution YTV is making to the countrythrough its Youth Achievement Awards andother programs that recognize and supportyoung Canadians. "It is an excellent exampleof the valuable impact television can havewhen it is used as a positive force in oursociety."

Through the CRTC decision, YTV isgranted a one-time wholesale rate increase ofthree cents in anglophone markets and onecent in francophone markets, bringing themaximum allowable rates to 35 cents and 9cents respectively. The rate increases will beeffective Jan. 1, 1993.

Hamilton enlisted the help of localsingers, musicians and studio people to recordthe two songs for release on both cassette andcompact disc formats. Earl Kirkby sang thefirst song, an upbeat, up -tempo, country -flavoured tune. Susan Walsh sang Canada ForMe, a slow ballad used as a love song to thecountry. Hamilton produced the sessions withKen Harnden, and Randall Prescott and KenFriesen engineered the recording and mixing.

When completed, the recording was sentto all Canadian radio stations, the premiers, the prime minister and other politicians.Hamilton has received responses from manyof the recipients, including Brian Mulroney."I am very impressed with the time, effort andskill you have invested in this work," wrotethe PM, "Your patriotic sentiments areparticularly appreciated."

Hamilton's employer, The Royal Bank, made a video of the song, which forms theframework of the company's 125th birthdayof Canada video project. Other corporationsand members of the media have also showninterest in the songs.

Despite all this, Hamilton says the projectwas a one-off deal and he has no ambition togive up his job at the bank or to further pursuea songwriting career. "I just wanted to make acontribution to unity. The songs seemed to bethe mostpractical way for one person to do it."

July shipments stableafter June's steep dropSales and shipments of recorded musicbounced back a bit in July after a disastrousJune, according to figures released by theCanadian Recording Industry Association(CRIA).

Total shipments in July were down oneper cent from July, 1991 while the net value ofsales was up 12 per cent. June shipments were11 per cent behind the year before and netsales were down seven per cent. June was alsothe first month that shipments of compactdiscs had decreased from the same period theyear before.

"We seem to have returned to some degreeof stability, which is encouraging," says CRIApresident, Brian Robertson. "Nobody's thrilledwith the level of retail business, but there issome degree of optimism."

For the year to date, total shipments areless than one per cent behind 1991's figures.Net sales are up five per cent over last year.Robertson says these numbers are right aroundwhere he had projected them to be for this timeof year.

Keith James to the rescue ... ! Could bethat Rawlco can enter the Toronto marketunscathed, in spite of all the posturing that'sbeen going on since they landed on, whatturned out to be, the unwanted 92.5 frequency.Keith James will helm the station as generalmanager, and if he does for the new FMcountry stereo station what he did for 820CHAM Country in Hamilton, then Canada'slargest market will be countrified in no time. The call letters for the new station haven'tbeen revealed, but apparently there's a flurryof excitement in pushing to have the stationon the air by mid or the end of November.(EC: Country keeps going, and going, andgoing . . . 9Michael Crawford's a showstopper!!! Ithought I was in for a boring symphonyorchestra -type of evening with MichaelCrawford and the music of Andrew LloydWebber. Nothing could be further from thetruth. Although he was suffering from a throatproblem, the 50 -year -old Crawford, whocreated the title role in The Phantom of theOpera, was vocally impeccable. Granted, theaudience was pre -sold, but Crawford didn'trest on his fan base. He projected into the veryeaves of the O'Keefe Centre, which broughtthe audience to its feet on too many occasions. He's there until Aug. 30, which isn't toohelpful if you're not among the Friday andSaturday readers of this column. Lollapalooza reflects new youth listening patternsby Steve McLean

The Lollapalooza '92 travelling rock and rollcircus has now left its two Canadian stopsbehind but, for radio's sake, the impressionthese shows left should be a lasting one.

More than 30,000 fans attended atVancouver's Thunderbird Stadium and thesame number attended at Molson Park inBarrie. The Barrie show sold out in a matter ofhours and twice as many tickets probablycould have been sold if the event was at alarger venue.

And what kind of groups were attractingall this attention? It wasn't Bruce Springsteenor Paula Abdul. Instead there was theatmospheric guitar sound of Lush, the heavyyet melodic Pearl Jam, the feedback -ladenJesus And Mary Chain, the aggressive grungerock of Soundgarden, the controversialgangster rap of Ice Cube, the wailing wall ofindustrial noise of Ministry, and the sex -drenched funk -rap of the Red Hot ChiliPeppers. Not exactly household names, arethey? Well, maybe not yet.

Sure the Chili Peppers had a monster hitwith the beautiful ballad, Under The Bridge, but I wonder how many people bought theBlood Sugar Sex Magik album after justhearing that song and then almost had heartfailure when they listened to the rest of theincendiary, hard -pumping tracks. Aside fromthat one song, the Chili Peppers haven'treceived that much airplay. Not enough to

Chris Sheppard addsclub clout to Dance 108Chris Sheppard, affectionately known as theKing of the Clubs, will bring his legion of fansto Dance 108 Burlington/Hamilton, the littlestation that keeps growing and growing andgrowing.

Sheppard, who gained much of hispopularity not only at the club level but throughseven years at CFNY, joins Lee Carter inleaving the station because of newprogramming directives from CFNY's newmanagement.

Sheppard is the latest jock to leave theToronto station for Dance 108. Skot Turnerrecently joined the station as assistant programdirector and music director. He will be on theair in September. Ironically, Sheppard andTurner were regarded as the two mostsuccessful on-airpersonalities at CFNY. Theyboth had #1 shows in the Toronto market.

Sheppard will be heard Friday andSaturday evenings beginning Sept. 18, shortlyafter he returns from Manchester, England, where he will take part in a music festival.

Sheppard has also been busy on therecording scene. He was the collaboratorbehind the successful techno compilations,Techno Trip 1 and 2 (Sheppard's Revenge) onQuality Records.

A third in the series, Sheppard's TrippingAgain, is scheduled for a September release. He will also shortly release an album of hisown material under the moniker of BKS titledFor Those About To Rave, We Salute You.

propel the album to No. 1 on the RPM 100Albums chart and to just a stone's throwaway from triple -platinum status, anyways. But that's exactly what's happened.

Admittedly, the Chili Peppers were theheadliners of the show. But let's take a look atthe other acts that were on the bill and theresponse they've been getting in themarketplace. Epic/Sony reps were atLollapalooza to give Pearl Jam a platinumalbum for surpassing 100,000 units sold fortheir Top 5 album, Ten. Soundgarden has soldin excess of 60,000 copies of theirBadmotorfinger album in Canada, giving ourhome and native land the distinction of beingthe first country in the world to take the albumto gold status. Ministry has sold almost 35,000copies of their aka Psalm 69 album in just amonth. The sales figures for Jesus And MaryChain and Lush fall short of the above groupsbut are still consistent and respectable enough, considering they've been labelled "alternative"acts.

These groups are now selling even morebecause of the interest generated byLollapalooza. But commercial radio doesn'tseem to have caught on yet.

We can take this even further. Temple OfThe Dog, a band made up of members fromPearl Jam and Soundgarden, released a self -titled album in April, 1991 which did verylittle. But with the current success of its twoconstituent bands, it has rocketed onto thecharts. In just four weeks it has vaulted fromNo. 88 to No. 35 to No. 24 to No. 14 on theAlbums chart. The soundtrack from theupcoming film Singles recently entered thechart at No. 47. Who' s on the soundtrack? Thetwo above -mentioned bands and such othernew, cutting -edge acts as Alice In Chains,Mudhoney, Screaming Trees, and SmashingPumpkins.

Groups like Megadeth, Faith No More,Sonic Youth, Danzig and Suicidal Tendencieshave also emerged from the underground andare now making dents on the charts -- alsowithout any significant commercial airplay.

And who were the 30,000 people whocame to., dance, become entranced and losetheir pants (I swear this happened to a fewpeople) at Molson Park? There was a handfulof 30 -somethings but, by an overwhelmingmargin, the demographics fell into the 13-24range. In fact, Clearasil was duking it out withsun tan lotion and pot smoke for the title ofmost predominant odour of the day. And itwasn't any one youth culture segment thataccounted for the flailing bodies in the moshpit in front of the stage or the more relaxedsubdudes lying on blankets hundreds of feetback.

There were punks, hippies, skateboarders, skinheads, suburban yuppies, long hairs, freaks, metal heads, bikers ... and just plain, old curious high school kids who just mayhave felt like relishing their freedom andrebelling for a day by getting a temporarytattoo or having their hair shaved or braided. Why? Simply because -- at Lollapalooza --they could.

And despite buying tickets that costalmost $30, these kids still had money leftover to buy lots of food, drinks, clothes, arts, crafts and the obligatory souvenir concert T-shirt of their favourite band. More than acouple were even spotted with T-shirts fromhalf -a -dozen of the acts. Despite the recession, there still seems to be a lot of disposableincome among today's teens. Advertisers, takenote.

Finally, one of the more surprisingoccurrences of Lollapalooza was the crowd'sresponse to Ice Cube. Here was an almostentirely white Canadian audience jumping upand down, chanting and dancing to an oftenprofane inner-city African -American rapperwhose latest album, Death Certificate, isn'teven available in Canada.

All of this just happened to occur on thesame day that Warner Music announced thatit would release Ice -T's Body Count album inCanada without the controversial song, CopKiller. The debate about that song's contentsand artistic merits is sure to rage on, but itcan't be denied that Soundgarden drew afrenzied cheer when they performed the songand throngs of young people later roared withapproval when Ice Cube proclaimed, "Recordsdon't kill people, cops do!"

Maybe today's youths haven't becomeas big a part of the corporate -driven Pepsigeneration as we've been led to believe overthe past few years. The crowds of teens atbooths outside the main Lollapalooza stage, who wanted to talk to various social/politicalactivist groups about causes ranging fromAIDS research to arms control to thelegalization of hemp, were a strong indicatorof that.

Traditionally teen -oriented CHR stationson AM radio are threatening to go the way offruit -flavoured potato chips because of lowratings, yet they stillpour thousands of dollarsinto the pockets of middle-aged consultantswho they hope can rescue them. Wouldn't itbe cheaper and easier to just take a step backand take a look at what's happening in themarketplace? If they're already down, whynot take a chance? This doesn't have to meana total revamping of formats, just wideningplaylists a bit would be a start.

COVER STORY - by Steve McLean

Big Plans for Tim Taylor's Savannah Music releaseTim Taylor may still be best-known to countryfans as Anita Perras' duet partner and husband, but he has Big Plans for a solo career, too.

Taylor and Perras released three albumstogether and were named Duo of the Year fourconsecutive times at the Canadian CountryMusic Association (CCMA) Awards. Tayloralso wrote One Smokey Rose for Perras andthe song was named both Single of the Yearand Song of the Year by the CCMA in 1988.

But despite their success as a duo, thetwo decided to split up their recordingrelationship and pursue their own individualmusical styles by launching solo careers.Taylor independently released Farewell Ave.,

No. 2 moves Madonna into No. 2. EltonJohn's The One nudges This Used To Be MyPlayground out of the top spot, after a threeweek stay. Madonna now moves into the No.2 position on the list of the most successfulartists in RPM history. She moves seven pointsahead of The Bee Gees with 894, based on No.1 songs, weeks at No. 1, weeks in the Top 10and weeks in the Top 40. The Beatles are stillthe most successful artist with 1034 points.

Things much the same ... The top of theAlbums chart remains similar to last week. The only change in the Top Five is the ClassicQueen album reclaiming the fifth spot overPearl Jam's Ten. Many people believe neitherof the Top Two albums will last very long.Indeed, a year from now many people won'tremember who was on top. By that sametheory, let's test last year's albums. Name theTop Five albums from one year ago.

Still going! The Beach Boys were on thevery first RPM chart back in June of 1964. IGet Around went on to hit No. 1 the next week.August of 1992 finds The Beach Boys back onthe chart. Their remake of Hot Fun In TheSummertime enters the chart at No. 84. Thelast No. 1 song for the group was Help MeRhonda, which hit the top in June of 1965,although Kokomo hit the Top Five in late '88.

New vs old. Eric Clapton's new version ofLayla could go on to become a bigger hit thanthe original. The new version jumps 38 spotsto No. 60. His original version, with berek &The Dominoes, went to No. 9 in August of '72.

This may start a riot! Guns N' Roses areback in the Top Five. November Rain movesup three notches from No. 8. It isn't theirbiggest hit though. Sweet Child 0' Mine wentto No. 2 four years ago. November Rain hasboosted sales of Use Your Illusion I. Thealbum has been climbing steadily over thepast month and this week bullets to No. 7.

Only a year ago. The Top Five albums oneyear ago were: Natalie Cole's UnforgettableWith Love, Crash Test Dummies' The GhostsThat Haunt Me, Extreme's Pornograffitti,Metallica's self -titled album and Bonnie.Raitt's Luck Of The Draw.

a collection of singles that he consolidatedinto one album, in 1990. And this spring hereleased Big Plans on the Savannah Musiclabel, which is distributed by Warner MusicCanada.

Taylor wrote or co -wrote all 10 songs onBig Plans, nine of them within a 15 -monthperiod which also saw him arrange, recordand produce the album in Nashville with thehelp of engineer Mike Bridges and a group ofsession players. The influence of late -'50sand early -'60s country and rockabilly isstamped all over the album. "It's contemporarycountry based on a little bit of that flavour,"Taylor says.

The first single from the album, LookWho's Loving You, peaked at No. 21 on theRPM 100 Country Tracks chart and currentlysits at No. 22. The Wild One, hasjust been released. Taylor thinks there are fivepotential singles on the album. "I hope eachtime a single goes out it will spark interest," hesays.

Taylor hasn't made videos for the firsttwo singles but tentative plans are in the worksfor two songs, No Better Than This and WeWere Fallin', which he feels lend themselves

    RPM - September 5, 1992 - 7

well to the medium.Since he does have a distinctive style,

Taylor decided to produce Big Plans himselfbecause he knew the kind of sound he wantedon the album. While he enjoyed the experience, producing others isn't a priority for him. "Idon't have aspirations to produce a lot ofpeople. I'd rather concentrate on singing andsongwriting.

"Performing and writing are of equalimportance. Writing is more like work. Yousit down and do it and then when it's finishedthere's a lot of satisfaction in it. But when youperform it's immediate."

The 40 -year -old has been doing a lot ofwriting lately, including some with othersongwriters, though none of the songs havebeen demoed or pitched to anyone yet. "I'dlike to get more material to other artists becauseI really haven't done too much of that in thepast," Taylor says.

Taylor has been p laying dates at festivalsand clubs in southern Ontario this summerbuthe would welcome the opportunity to tour ona larger scale to raise his profile among countryfans.

Thatpublic exposure could also be helpedif a planned Savannah Christmas albummaterializes later this year. Taylor has a songwritten, recorded and ready to go for theproject.

More country customers a priority at HMVHMV has launched a major campaign to bringa greater prominence to country music with itsstores in English Canada.

Toronto's Yonge Street superstore haseven opened its doors to country showcasesand autograph sessions. Says HMV presidentPaul Alofs, "I think the move to country is atrend, not a fad. A fad is something that comesand goes very quickly. A trend is somethingthat's with us for a long time.

"I think the growth and interest in countrywill be with us for a very long time."

HMV's campaign is to get more people, who traditionally have been buying throughmail order, into the stores. "We have tomerchandise and make our stores morecustomer friendly for those country fans. Wealso have an opportunity to expand our rangeand selection as we move out of cassettes andlook for more good things to put in the stores.Expanding the catalogue is something HMVwill definitely be doing. The range in selectionof back catalogue now in the country area isgetting much improved."

Alofs also pointed out that the HMVstores in the west, where country sales havebeen good, have their own in-store 1 through10 charts, which he hopes to expand across therest of the chain.

The new breed of young country artistand their message songs have become veryimportant during these recessionary times."They've captured the people's imaginationwith their songs. People can relate to thelyrics, which are interesting and involvingand they grab people's hearts. They're justgood songs.

"Country artists are dealing with issuesin their song material they never dealt with

before: wife abuse, domestic violence. Theirsongs are relevant today, and to a youngeraudience."

With the move toward more recognitionof country music, sparked by the phenomenalU.S. success of Garth Brooks and, morerecently, Billy Ray Cyrus, Alofs views this asa vehicle toward more recognition forCanadian country artists.

"Michelle Wright is an affluent Canadiantreasure. The country -influenced bands likeBlue Rodeo, Prairie Oyster and CowboyJunkies are, in turn, influencing another groupof bands like the Skydiggers and others thatare coming along in the next generation.

"I firmly believe that country music isgoing to be an important and very influencingfactor in the music we'll be hearing in thefuture. Retailers should be paying particularattention to the opportunities that countrymusic can offer at the retail level."

LESLIE SPIT TREED - RockBook of RejectionCapitol -EMI - C2 -99646-FThe eagerly awaited second album fromthis band shouldn't disappoint old fans andcould gain the group new ones. This albumIs, at different times, both harder and softerthan the 1990 debut, Don't Cry Too Hard. The lead track, Angry Lifetime, lives up toits title, while Happy is a sarcastic song theband provided when their record companyrequested an upbeat song for the album.River Through My Fire and Sometimes IWish are both relationship songs and PeopleSay includes strong lyrics about hypocrisyin society. Little Dog combines soothingharmonies with driving rock and roll andalso features a cameo by the Treeo's dog,Tag. She's A Slut's title will probably keepIt off the radio but Its a seething rocker thatallows guitarists Pat Langner and JackNicholsen to show off their guitar skills. However, It's the voice of Laura Hubertwhich makes this band stand out. What Ifaccentuates the country inflections inHubert's powerful voice and her roundedtones effectively complement RandyBachman as he guests on lead guitar on thefirst single, In Your Eyes. The mid -tempoballad was the biggest mover on the RPM100 Hit Tracks chart last week, vaultingfrom No. 78 to No. 32 in its second week.Book of Rejection was produced by ChrisWardman and recorded and mixed by JoeHardy. This album should be displayedprominently at all retail outlets, but I'm sureIt will get a big push at Sam's since theguest keyboardist Is none other than JasonSniderman . - SM

T BONE BURNETT - Folk/RockThe Criminal Under My Own HatColumbia - CK 45213-HBurnett hasn't released a solo album for afew years because he's been too busyproducing other artists, but this disc provesthat he's lost none of his songwriting skillsduring his recording hiatus. Burnett hassome impressive musicians playing withhim here, including Jim Kellner, Van DykeParks, Jerry Scheff and Marc Ribot. Theinstrumentation is primarily acoustic andthe arrangements are quite sparse, but thesimplicity of the album Is Its shining point.Even Burnett's voice, which is at timespretty thin, fits In well with the material.Songs to listen for Include Over You, TearThis Building Down, Humans From Earth,Primitives, Any Time At All, and The LongTime Now. Also of note is It's Not Too Late, which was written by Burnett, album co-producer Bob Neuwirth, and long-timeBurnett cohort, Declan MacManus (ElvisCostello). But despite these three writers, the song sounds hauntingly like somethingKurt Weil might have produced back in hisheyday. - SM

P.J.JACKSON - CountryP.J.JacksonStony Plain - SPCD-1178-PThe elusive P.J. Jackson has finally beenfound, although his Walkin' In A Hard Rainsingle is on Warner CD compilation 135,issued back in May. A few countryprogrammers picked up on the track, butwithout a promotion push, it was ignored. That's a pity, but it's not too late, now thatJackson's album has been shipped. Andwe know that it's the album thatprogrammers are interested in, not the CDcompilations. Anyway, here's a bright newcountry artist who has a natural approach tomusic and lyrics, all of which he wrotehimself. The vocal projection and lyricInterpretation is convincing. Jackson is aborn storyteller, and much of his material isbased on his own hardships that have takenhim from his Nova Scotia birthplace to hisnew home In Vancouver. Jackson has thatcool, handsome look that has becomerecognizable with the new breed ofAmerican country acts and is now surfacingin this country. Looks aside, Jackson has avocal connector that won't go unnoticed, ifpromoted properly. This is the kind of no-nonsense, down to earth type ofcommunicator that country music fans arelooking for. Although all tracks are key, more doors could be opened with Walkin'Tall, Hand In Hand, and Here Comes MondayMorning. J ackson keeps in touch with reality. He still drives a truck. Produced by TomLavin at his Blue Wave Studio in Vancouver.Don't hide this guy away. A front -rackposition will attract the ladies. - WG

VARIOUS ARTISTS - World BeatA World Out Of Time: Henry Kaiser& David Lindley in MadagascarShanachie - 64041American multi -instrumentalist DavidLindley and guitarist Henry Kaiser havelong been known for their adventurousforays Into the music of other cultures intheir own work, but they go one step furtheron this Intriguing new album. The two visitedthe remote African Island of Madagascarand hooked up with more than 60Indigenous musicians, many who wouldotherwise never have played together, on18 songs. Sometimes the outsiders try totit into the Malagasy roots music, sometimes they superimpose their ownmusical Ideas, sometimes they stay out ofthe way and don't play because the musicis so good that they have nothing to add,and sometimes all of the musicians striveto develop new and original cross-culturalcollaborations, as on Rossy's version of IFought The Law. This Is the first of fivediscs recorded in Madagascar that will bereleased by Shanachie. And, along withthe informative 32 -page booklet whichaccompanies It, It acts as a fine primer forthose who want to delve deeper than PaulSimon's cultural plundering and exploreheretofore almost unknown musical styles.

    - CountrySHENANDOAHLong Time Comin'RCA - 07863-66001-NThe title track perhaps says it best. A newlabel has obviously given this harmonically -perfect fivesome a new lease on life. Theydidn't do too bad with Rock My Baby, thefirst single, which peaked at #4 on the RPMCountry 100 on July 4/92. They are back onthe charts with the follow-up, Hey Mister (INeed This Job). There are other good singlepotentials here which should give this albuma long life: I Was Young Once Too, SameOld Heart, and Rattle The Windows. A littlemore touring in this country could bringthem into prominence at country radio.Produced by Robert Byrne and KeithStegall. - WG

KANSAS - RockLive At The WhiskyIntersound - CD1 -9107Produced by Kansas drummer Phil Chartand Jeff Glixman, this powerful package ofexquisite vocal harmonies should becomea must for every pop and country station inthe country. Most will remember theirsignature song, Dust In The Wind, and it'shere along with 13 other equally vocally -perfect tracks. What's unique about thispackage is that the band's performancewas recorded in one take at the famous LosAngeles club in April. The performance wasrecorded by Guy Charbonneau's mobilestudio. The bonus track, Lonely Street, wasrecorded at the Agora Ballroom in Clevelandin 1975. Great stuff here, most of which waswritten by Kerry Livgren, who performed asa guest with the band. The band's leadsinger, Steve Walsh, teamed with Livgrenfor Down The Road, Mysteries And Mayhem, and The Wall, all of which are key. This isa front -rack item. There area lot of recordbuyers who remember Kansas and theirsuccess in the '70s. - WG

INXS -RockWelcome To Wherever You AreAtlantic - CD 82394-POn their eighth studio album, Australia'sINXS have returned to their past In manyways. Welcome To Wherever You Are wasproduced by the band in tandem with Mark

Opitz, who previously produced their 1983breakthrough album, Shabooh Shoobah. The lead track, Questions, is reminiscent ofThe Beatles' most mystical work with Itsheavy East Indian and late '60s psychedelicinfluences. It's followed by Heaven Sent, the first track sent to rock, AOR and newmusic stations. The full steam ahead guitarrocker is my pick as the top cut on thealbum. Baby Don't Cry will be aimed at CHRand should do well with its simple anthemicchorus and backing by a 69 -piece orchestra. Not Enough Time is a sexy love song whileBeautiful Girl is a soothing piece of movingpop. Communication is another highlighttrack. Lead singer Michael Hutchence'ssultry looks and vocals, combined with theother band members' strong playing, hasmade INXS one of the world's most popularbands in recent years, and this albumshouldn't detract from their popularity.Welcome To Wherever You Are entered thecharts at No. 1 in the United Kingdom andit should chart strongly here as well. - SM

SLOANPeppermintmurderecords - MUR CD001This Halifax band appears to have a bigfuture ahead of it. After a fierce bidding warfor their talents, they signed with DGC --home of similar minded g rungesters,Nirvana. And while the comparisons withthe Seattle crew are viable, lead singerChris Murphy's voice, at times, soundslike a more in control J. Mascis fromDinosaur Jr. This independently releasedsix -song disc is highlighted by theirunderground hit, Underwhelmed. The songis a piece of bratty, brilliant pop about ananal retentive high school student'srelationship problems with a less thangenius girlfriend. The band's wry sense ofhumour also shines through on Lucky ForMe. Shimmering psychedelia andaggressive pop with strong melodies andchurning guitars can be found on the fourother tracks. Look for Sloan's debut onGeffen in October. - SM

MARK CURRYIt's Only TimeVirgin - V2-86390-0The debut album from this 24 -year -oldCalifornian combines folk, rock and bluesin songs with lean arrangements. Curry'sraw -edged vocals and simple acousticguitar playing are emphasized throughout, with the album's session players (Includingthe ubiquitous Waddy Wachtel on slideguitar) adding fills and unobtrusive backingrhythms. Curry had a poor home life andwas kicked out of the house at age 14, soit's no great surprise that the 11 self -pennedsongs on the album reflect Curry's pastexperiences of getting hurt and growing up.The lead single, Sorry About The Weather, discusses world problems and how they'reoften treated as if they're less importantthan tomorrow's forecast. Blow Me Downand Somehow are also affecting. - SM
