PRINCIPAL’S REPORT

FAREWELL MR DAVID JENKINS Mr David Jenkins has been involved in Catholic Education for forty years. He came to Port Macquarie in 1988, commencing his work at St Joseph’s Regional High School; prior to this he had been teaching Religion, Mathematics, Geography, History, Commerce and Technics at Marist Brothers Eastwood from 1977 to 1985 and also teaching Religion, Mathematics, Geography, Science at St Augustine's College Cairns from 1986 to1987. During his time working in St Agnes’ Parish David has worked at St Joseph’s Regional High School from 1988-1996, St Paul’s High School from 1997 to 2000, MacKillop Senior Campus from 2001 to 2014 and finally at MacKillop College from 2015 to 2016. Throughout this period David has taught Mathematics and Religion, including Studies of Religion, and he has had many different roles in his years of service to staff, students and the community. David has been a Year Co-ordinator and the Leader of Learning Mathematics, and at one point at St Joseph’s Regional High School he had both of these roles at once; he certainly is a clever man. David was the Assistant Campus Principal at St Paul’s High School and the Acting Campus Principal at St Paul’s as well. In 2001 David became the Assistant Campus Principal of MacKillop Senior Campus. David finishes his career with the role of Assistant Principal of MacKillop College, responsible for staff and student Pastoral Care. The school has 1100 students Year 7 – 12 and 135 staff; an enormous position which he has carried out with great professionalism and passion. David’s knowledge and background in BOSTES requirements, his understanding and experience in supporting students with special circumstances and his wisdom in counselling and guiding students to their best results in the HSC have been invaluable. He has been a coach to many of our young men and always saw this as an opportunity to build relationships with students, enhancing the engagement with the school and sense of belonging to the community. David is a man of integrity, he shows great loyalty to those on his team, he is firm but gentle and has a loving heart. David has worked with thousands of students throughout his 40 years of generous service to Catholic Education, and I congratulate him on his success and thank him for all he has contributed to the St Agnes’ Parish, in particular to MacKillop College in our first stage of amalgamation. I wish David a long and happy retirement and look forward to him returning to share his great stories about this next stage of his life.

STAFF CHANGES FOR TERM 3 Next term Mr Dom Ashe is taking long service leave and I wish him a safe and rewarding break from his work. Dom is our first Leader of Pastoral Care to have a year group of 225 students and he has worked tirelessly to ensure all students are cared for. Mrs Tracie Hartley, who is a very experienced teacher of HSIE, will be teaching his classes for the term. Mrs Ellen McKell will be taking on the role of Leader of Pastoral Care Year 7 and I am confident that Ellen will be successful and very supportive of the Year 7 students in Dom’s absence. Ms Linda Frankham is travelling with her grandmother in Term 3 and Mr Brent Lowrey will be teaching her classes for the term. Brent is a very professional and experienced teacher and will ensure all students in his classes are productive and continue their learning. SOLOMON ISLAND CULTURAL IMMERSION, NEW ZEALAND MUSI C TOUR AND CAIRNS FIELD TRIP I sincerely thank all staff involved in the Solomon Island Cultural Immersion, Music tour to New Zealand and the Cairns senior Geography excursions this week; these are very positive and rewarding experiences which certainly have great educational value - we are blessed to have staff who are prepared to provide this opportunity for the students. Sincere thanks to Mr Michael Kelly, Mr Dave McMahon, Ms Holly Hitchen, Ms Joan Lancaster, Mrs Sharon Green, Mr Andrew Evans, Mrs Katrina Hayes and Mrs Georgina Pender. Georgie is actually replacing Mrs Lisa Kable who unfortunately, due to an injury, is unable to attend. SLEEP OUT It was a freezing cold and windy night for the sleep out last Friday and I congratulate all students who attended. Special thanks to Mr Zac Parnell who was the main organiser, and thanks to Mrs Emma Daley, Mrs Jodie Rich, Mr Col Coehlo, Mr Daniel Blackman and Mr Brent Lowry who braved the extreme conditions and stayed over with the students. JUNIOR STUDENT REPORTS Year 7-10 students will receive their report today. The report provides feedback to the student and their family about their progress during the first half of the year and several extra descriptors which provide details about a student’s approach to their learning. I encourage families to take some time to discuss this progress and the information related to their son/daughter’s approach to learning. If a parent requires more information or wishes to discuss this report please contact the office to plan a convenient time to meet with the teachers involved. TERM 2 CONCLUDES As this is the last newsletter for the term, I take the opportunity to thank parents for their support throughout the term and wish students a safe and rest-filled holiday. Year 12 commence their HSC Trials in Week 3 of next term, so while they will be having some time to rest and relax it is also an ideal opportunity to revise and prepare for these important exams. For Year 7-10 students the holidays will certainly be a break from school work; taking time to do some reading for leisure is always a great pursuit during the holidays. Year 11 students should use the time to work on current assessments and take this great opportunity to catch up on any outstanding work, especially if half yearly reports contained any surprises and a more determined approach is needed for next term.

“May the Spirit of the Lord be with you”

YEAR 12 NEWS ATHLETICS CARNIVAL Congratulations to all the Year 12 students who attended and participated so enthusiastically during the day. Mr Wheatland and I were assigned to supervise the U18 boys for each of the sport rotations – it was quite enjoyable to spend this time with such a mature and fun group. There was lots of healthy competition, generous support and encouragement with some good sledging thrown in. Next newsletter will no doubt include some photos as well as age champions. The carnival wouldn’t have been such a success without the organisation and hard work of our Sports Co-ordinator, Andrea Huxley and Sport Trainee Zahna Franklin. OTHER SPORTING ITEMS

• All Schools Cross Country – congratulations to Jack Pilgrim who competed a few weeks ago and placed 4th in this prestigious event, quite an achievement given Jack hadn’t put as much preparation into the event as he would have liked.

• Open boy’s and girl’s football (soccer) – the teams travelled to Coffs Harbour on Wednesday to compete along with their coaches, Mr Daniel Watts and Mrs Jenny Watson respectively. At the time of writing we are awaiting the results. Year 12 team members include- Boys: Tom Biron, Nick Brown, Blake Johnson, Tom Madden, Jack Pilgrim, Jacob Pugh, Ben Stocks, James Ting, and Tenzin Tulau-Richardson.

Girls: Alex Callagher, Claudia Milligan, Teigan Murray and Monica Worth.

JULY HOLIDAY BREAK As mentioned in last week’s newsletter, it is important that students give themselves some time to rest and recuperate, while blending in some study regimes so they will perform to their optimum in the HSC Trial exams beginning Week 3 next term. Also a reminder that the first Monday of Term 3 is a Staff Development Day and that students return on the Tuesday for normal lessons.

PHYSICS FEST AT GREAT LAKES COLLEGE Last Saturday six Year 12 Physics students (Jade Conway, Brayden De Castro, Brenden Grainger, Reagan Heard and James Ting) and I travelled to Great Lakes College Tuncurry to gain some extra knowledge of some fundamental Physics experiments directly linked to the HSC syllabus run by Newcastle University. We saw the Meissner effect – how a magnet levitated above a superconductor cooled below its critical temperature because the superconductor excluded this external magnetic field; the Michelson-Morley Interferometer designed to show the (non-existent) aether that was believed to propagate light in space; a Wilson Cloud Chamber to observe alpha and beta nuclear decay products, projectile motion apparatus and digital film to apply the laws of motion; the apparatus for Thomson’s charge to mass ratio of an electron; the Photoelectric Effect along with graphing of data to calculate Planck’s constant and the metal electrode’s work function. After a sausage sizzle we attended an excellent tutorial regarding Einstein’s Theory of Special Relativity dealing mainly with time dilation and length contraction at relativistic speeds.

YEAR 10 NEWS I would like to wish all families a safe and restful July holiday break. Students have been working very hard throughout the term and deserve this break. Term 3 offers so many activities and opportunities for all students. In the front of our student minds will be the visit to Newman Senior Technical College and MacKillop senior campus, Year 11 2017 information evenings and interviews for Year 11 2017. Students are encouraged to re-read the relevant information booklets and discuss options with their parents or guardians. TERM 3 EVENTS FOR YEAR 10 21st July – Newman Senior Technical College visit (12.00p.m. -3.00p.m.). 25th July – Year 11 2017 Parent/Student Information Evening for MacKillop College 26th July – Year 11 2017 Parent/Student Information Evening for Newman Senior Technical College 1st August – Year 11 2017 Student Information Day for MacKillop College 4th August – Year 11 2017 Enrolment interviews for both MacKillop College and Newman Senior Technical College 1st September – Year 10 Mass and Community Service Day Warren Lorger Year 10 Leader of Pastoral Care [email protected]

YEAR 9 NEWS

CONGRATULATIONS Congratulation to Lleyton Wilbow who has received a Pastoral Co-ordinator’s Award. Fantastic effort, keep them coming in. CHRIS DOYLE DAY The Chris Doyle presentation started with some tentative Year 9 students who were very well-behaved but reluctant to step out of their comfort zone. Fortunately Chris worked with this group and some brave students stepped up and showed their talents which was infectious and soon nearly every student was laughing and giggling at themselves and having a great time in a positive environment. It soon became an environment where people looked down on those passing judgement and celebrated other students’ talents and quirkiness. I hope by the end of the year students realise the importance of celebrating each other’s talents whether that be academic, theatrical, musical, technological, sporting ……..

Page 7: 1st July 2016 - MacKillop College July 2016.pdfFriday, 1st July, 2016 COMING UP IN WEEK 2 TERM 3 Monday, 25 - Year 11 2017 Parent/Student Information evening for MacKillop MACKILLOP

REPORTS AND HOLIDAYS I strongly recommend that you sit down with your child tonight and read through the report with them. This should be a reflective process where students look at the report and understand areas that they succeeded in and what they need to do for this to continue, as well as looking at areas that they may not have achieved as well in and what realistic steps they need to take to make a change. If students do not make adjustments then they will more than likely receive the same yearly report. Congratulations to all of those students who set themselves academic goals and achieved them. This is great recognition of the work you have put in. I hope every student has an enjoyable break and comes back in Term 3 ready to start on a positive note. Glen Littler Year 9 Leader of Pastoral Care [email protected]

YEAR 8 NEWS ENJOY YOUR HOLIDAYS! Well done Year 8, you’ve had a great term and it’s time to give yourselves a rest and enjoy your holidays! Whether you have something wonderful organised with your family or simply plan to enjoy a break from routine at home, I wish you all a happy, safe and relaxing holiday – you deserve it. THE TERM TO COME A new semester is just around the corner and it is full of possibilities for everyone! Are you thrilled with your report or is there room for improvement? Would you like to earn another Application Award or maybe an Excellence and Application Award? Are you interested in joining a team or choir or perhaps the Garden Club? Can you see yourself getting involved in some of the other wonderful opportunities on offer at MacKillop College? Perhaps you’d like to expand your friendship circle or improve your study routine - the possibilities are endless! One opportunity that we can all look forward to next term is Year 8 Camp! Undoubtedly one of the highlights of the year, our camp is a great opportunity for many things. Our preparation will help us to hone our organisation and co-operation skills and our time away together will see us expand our relationships, learn to work as a team, find strength in ourselves and increase our survival skills. We will work together, prepare meals together and rest together. Ultimately we will learn new skills, but very importantly – we’ll have a lot of fun together! WELCOME BACK Term 3 will see Mrs Nicole O’Connell return from long service leave to her position as Year 8 Leader of Pastoral Care. Mrs O’Connell has enjoyed a well-deserved holiday and has had a great rest. She is looking forward to returning to MacKillop College and is excited to reconnect with all of her students. Make sure to say hi and welcome her back! Ellen McKell Acting Year 8 Leader of Pastoral Care [email protected]

YEAR 7 NEWS Well semester one is complete, exams and reports are done ! I hope the Year 7 reports make good reading for parents. As a Co-ordinator I found most of these reports exceptional reading, with a small percentage requiring some improvement in one or two areas. Year 7 need to remember that Semester 2/Term 3 brings new opportunities and the chance to improve and set up goals for success. That will be a focus in our Wellbeing lessons early on in the term. For myself Term 3 will be a time to travel, utilise some long service leave and catch up with family and friends. I wish Year 7 all the best and hope to hear many success stories from Term 3 in my absence.

STUDENT REPRESENTATIVE COUNCIL It was impressive to see the donations of winter clothing at the junior campus and the care packages for McCosker House at the senior campus; this on top of the money donated during our recent out of uniform day. A big thanks to the 7 – 12 SRC who went to each PC to promote and encourage these donations, to the PC teachers who helped co-ordinate and to our Youth Ministry Officer, Zac Parnell who also was a driving force behind the initiative. The photos below show some of the Year 11 and 12 SRC prior to loading the bags of winter clothes into the Vinnies truck last Friday. The care packages were transported to McCosker House on Wednesday.

HSIE NEWS YEAR 7 HISTORY ANCIENT CHINA ASSESSMENT Last week Year 7 students were given a History assessment. Students will be researching a Chinese personality and preparing a resume and job application speech. This assessment is due in their first lesson of week 3 next term. Please note that this is NOT a holiday assessment. Students were given time in class this term, and will have more time early next term to work on their assessment. One key part of the task will be created and submitted through the Voki App. This app has been distributed to all students via AirWatch at school or by their teacher. Please note that Voki has options for paid versions, you do not need to upgrade to a paid version. The key to this task is the content of the speech not how cool it looks or sounds. As always students with IPad issues should talk to their teachers and look at accessing the Voki web-based version. Your teacher will help you with this. If you have any concerns, please contact me directly. Andrew Evans Leader of Learning HSIE [email protected]

ENRICHMENT NEWS This term the MacKillop Creatives group have been turning their talents towards writing a range of pieces to enter into competitions. We have all been playfully experimenting with character, imagery and story lines in our lunchtime sessions. Some of our skilled writers have entered the 2016 John Marsden & Hatchette Australia Prize for Young Writers and the Dorothy McKellar Poetry Awards, and we are also running an in-school competition! Short stories of any length and genre can be entered. The competition is open until 12th August, with prizes including vouchers for Bookface and other writing themed goodies! Any student wishing to join in our workshops or to enter a story is very welcome to do so. I'm sure we have some hidden creative writers still waiting to be discovered!

LEARNING TECHNOLOGIES NEWS MacKillop College will be implementing NetUse at the commencement of Term 3. NetUse is an internet management tool that provides accountability for our students on our College WiFi network. With the initiation of NetUse, the College is incorporating a monthly download quota limit for all students. This will be a 5 GB download limit refreshed every month for all students. All student usernames and passwords will remain the same and no device changes need to be made to existing school WiFi network connections. The quota limit size has been carefully calculated to ensure equability across all year groups. To assist student learning, many sites, including our College Moodle page, Google Apps for Education Suite and ClickView online are exempt from the NetUse quota. This ensures that no student is hindered or penalised from accessing key classroom digital technologies and resources. Students can monitor their quota in real time via a student NetUse portal link. This will be available for students to access via our College Moodle page. Students will also be prompted within their internet browser when their data download has reached 50%, 75% and 90%. It is important that all students are proactive in ensuring that they do not exceed the monthly quota. Students exceeding the internet quota will receive an M.O.T.T.O. infringement. In the advent of running low on quota, a top-up request ticket can be submitted via the ICT Help Desk link on the school Moodle page. Mr Jones or our Technical Support Officers will then make contact and investigate the feasibility of an internet quota top-up. Rhys Jones Leader of Learning Technologies [email protected]

ATHLETICS CARNIVAL A great day was had by all. I would like to say a HUGE thank you and congratulations to all of the students who were involved and participated with enthusiasm. Thankfully the rain stayed away and the biting winds didn’t affect our athletes’ performances too much. I would like to make special mention of the students who, despite being injured and unable to participate, still showed up to lend a hand. Their help was greatly appreciated by all of the staff and students. Actions like these speak volumes for a person’s character and commitment; their attendance and support does not go unnoticed. The results will be announced at the next assembly…… I hope you can survive the suspense ☺

REPRESENTATIVE SPORT RESULTS: BILL TURNER CUP ROUND 5 VS GREAT LAKES COLLEGE TUNC URRY The MacKillop boys’ soccer team had another impressive win, this time over GLC Tuncurry, the final score was 3-1. Captain Lachlan Clacher played a strong game in the mid-field and showcased his power, skill and speed on a number of occasions. Lachlan had been well supported by Flynn Goodman who instigated a number of attacking raids. Also our midfield of Samuel Hazelton-Kelly, Wilson Harries and Ambrose Humphreys were tireless in their efforts to maintain possession and control the ball in the middle areas. In the backs Jyal Tregier impressed many with his speed and skill to wipe out any potential threats and was well supported by Samuel Thompson, Jasper Williams and Declan Harrison. Marraki Kilpatrick our keeper had another impressive game in goals, stopping a number of good shots, plus putting his body on the line when one on one opportunities presented. Up front Nicholas Rooney completed a great solo effort, while Lachlan Darrington swooped on a loose ball in the box to convert two great opportunities. Both were well-supported by Bailey Richmond, Quinn Lickley and Andrew Stocks. The boys now play Bishop Druitt College from Coffs Harbour in the Mid North Coast finals in early Term 3. Dom Ashe Coach NSWCCC BASKETBALL OPEN BOYS The open boys’ basketball team recently travelled to Penrith for the NSWCCC championships. The boys had a tough start to the tournament; drawn against former teammate, Jacob Foy from St Francis Xavier College, Newcastle. After a number of early baskets from St Francis Xavier, the team could not bridge the gap, losing 42-29. The next game against De La Salle College, Revesby did not get any easier. Against a tall team, the boys went down 35-62. After a solid lunch and reflection from the first two games, the boys came out firing against St Leo’s Catholic College, Wahroonga. The boys put in a much improved performance, leading St Leo’s for parts of the game before going down 42-49. The second day started strongly for the team, up against the previously undefeated Patrician Brothers’ College, Fairfield. The MacKillop boys led for large periods of the game, with Joshua Minihan, Jacob Lockwood and Reagan Heard putting in strong performances. The boys were pipped at the post, going down 34-38. Our final game put us up against Patrician Brothers’ College, Blacktown. The MacKillop boys again started strongly, with solid performances from Joshua Minihan and Reagan Heard. In a high scoring game, the boys went down 53-60. Well done to all the boys on a wonderful effort and behaviour on the trip. The team included Reagan Heard, Nicholas Lewis, Jack Lister, Thomas Lister, Jacob Lockwood, Joshua Minihan, Lachlan Myers, Samual Petrie, Isaac Post and Cody Ross.
