PSYCHOLOGICAL WARFARE SUMMARY

On 16 April, a unit of the EUSAK, Psychological Warfare.lection was attached to the First Battalion, First ~~rinee. T~~s Ur1t through a series of Chinese language broadcasts endeavored to foster discontentment among the Chinese forces and to encourage their surrender. To assist in this purpose, the Battalion -o,peration and IntelU.genoe Officers chose a suitable position ro:r these broadcasts e:t CT l04l08. All broadcs.sts were coord1na.tad d~oaely with other Battalion activities to insure that the broadcasts were current and timely.

On £2 April, between the hours of 1800 and 2000, four (4), seven ( 7) minute broadcasts were made. Again on April 2.'5, lbe unit broadoastad·tour (4}, five (5) minute lectruras to the •ne•y between the hours of 1800 to 2000. These broadcasts were concerned with fostering discontentment and surrender of enemy pereonnel. Detailed instructions were given to the enemy on how to surrender. epec1al emphasis was placed on the fair treatment, good foOd, adequate shelter, clothing and medical assistance to prisoners or war. From a new nosit1on at CT 102103, on 29 and 30 April another series of four (4)~ five (5) minute lectures were given bet~en the hours of 1830 to 1900. The theme of these talks were concerned with the disadvants.ges of life under Communist rule.

Due to inclement weather, nearly impassable terrain and aeveral readjustments of friendly lines, full utilization of the Pa70holog1cal '·Tartare Unit rv"&a not possible. Effectiveness of the broadcasts in this area is as yet undetermined.

Coru1anding Officer Commandant of the Marine Corps (1) Commanding Orficer, First Marines . ~2) Commanding General, Flrst Marine Division . \5) Commanding General, Fleet Marine Force, Pacific

Subj: l~ig...ht f1r1ng courseJ report of

Enol: ~~~ ~ketch of night firing course \~1 Ulagram of bobber targets (5) Range regulations for night firing exercise

A ni€ht firing course consists of a problem in which the 1n~ dividual rifleman is trained to recognize for himself a vali~ target and to cooperate with his fire team and squad in the dis~ posal or the target, The target in this case represents an· ~ne111y soldlei' approaching his poei tion under cover or darkness. ,i;he rifleman is trained not to fire unless he can recognize the·. shape o~ the e1lhouette. A by-product of th1e course is that !t d1m1nishes the Hro.rine 1 s dependence upon grenades because he becDpt~S conscious of his ability to destroy the enemy by waiting un'l;!l the enemy :presents a rifle target, Firing the course resul#• in inc rea sed contio.ence or the rifleman in his ab111 ty to fire a'ccurately e.t night. Ex?eri.enc.e has sho-w-n that a 40%· ave1•age or.hita . on tte target is not unusual, ."'''

The arrangement usee. in the nroblem nlaces denendence u-oon ·the f'ire tepm and the sauad, Rarely is there an opportunity to-refer to a higher echelon of' authority than the squad leader, The squad becomes cognizru1t of the need for designating 'fields ot tire betore n!ghtfa.ll,

The accompanying sketch {Enclosure (1) ) suggests an 1de.al night f'l.ring situation for tra!n:l.ng in Korea, A natural de tens! ve setup ·Ke.s selected on the nose of a descending ridgeline. 'l'he usual two man fox..>101es were constructed, Because of the added ee.f'ety ::_:,re cautions necessary for such a course, the foxholes: were placed closer together the.n normal. In this way the pr-oblem ot control "1-'RS lessened for the NCO in charge of the range. The ·defensive position should command a sa.tistactory av·enue of atH>roach r1 s1.ng from a f'airly level valley or ravine floor, This perm! ts a ff'.nning out of the squad's zone of fire, .

A position in defilade should be selected at the base or the nose into ;,rhioh a bunker can be built for the target pulling crew. A firing ronge clear or large rocks should be selected to minimize the possibility of ricochets,
