ENUMERATE Surveys I

The Core Survey is designed in such a way that it

(a) can indicate progress made in the digitisation of EU cultural heritage since NUMERIC;

MSEG Working GroupMarco de Niet 27 June 2011

cultural heritage since NUMERIC; (b) can be converted “easily” into a generic inlay for the

annual reports of memory institutions; (c) yields indications of how the thematic survey, to be

conducted in Year 2, can be designed and implemented.

ENUMERATE Surveys II

The Thematic Survey is more substantive and designed to discover both qualitatively and quantitatively trends and best practices in the growth, costs, accessibility and preservation of digitised heritage collections;

MSEG Working GroupMarco de Niet 27 June 2011

preservation of digitised heritage collections;

it will be targeted at smaller groups of culturalorganizations that can provide quality information on oneor more of the topics;

groups may be selected by the National Coordinators, orbe identified from the results of the Core Survey.

Approach

The state of digitising cultural heritage in Europe is extrapolated from three surveys amongst a representative sample of cultural heritage institutions.

MSEG Working GroupMarco de Niet 27 June 2011

2011 & 2013: core survey2012: thematic survey

The results will be compared with data from NUMERIC and other surveys [where possible]

Page 7: 1st Meeting of MSEG Working Group on Digitisation Statistics...ENUMERATE Core Survey 1. The ENUMERATE surveys 2. Defining the survey sample 3. The core survey Marco de Niet MSEG Working

ENUMERATE’s ‘universe’ is the cultural heritage domain: ‘memory institutions’.

Defining the survey sample

MSEG Working GroupMarco de Niet 27 June 2011

SIG-STATS: “Every institution that belongs to thisdomain, whether publicly or privately funded, whether actively involved with digitisation or not, may contribute to the Study”

This excludes institutions with a main mission to offer “consumer goods”, like public libraries and broadcasters (cfNumeric)

• Archive / Records office• Audio-visual archive / Film institute; • Museum of art, archaeology, history; • Museum of science, technology, ethnology;

Heritage subdomains

MSEG Working GroupMarco de Niet 27 June 2011

• Museum of science, technology, ethnology; • Other type of museum; • National library; • Higher education library; • Special or other type of library with heritage collections; • Institution for Monument Care; • Other type of institution (e.g. historical society with collection)

• NUMERIC used the concept of relevant institutions:

“…institutions where digitisation of collections significantly

From relevant to representative

MSEG Working GroupMarco de Niet 27 June 2011

“…institutions where digitisation of collections significantly enhance access to the country’s cultural heritage.”

This proved to be too ambiguous (see Numeric Study Report page 23-29).

Page 11: 1st Meeting of MSEG Working Group on Digitisation Statistics...ENUMERATE Core Survey 1. The ENUMERATE surveys 2. Defining the survey sample 3. The core survey Marco de Niet MSEG Working

Drop the principle of “relevancy” and use “representativeness” instead;

But how?

The ENUMERATE sample

MSEG Working GroupMarco de Niet 27 June 2011

Starting points: - institutions that contributed to Numeric- overall #CH-institutions in EU27- #staff employed in CH-institutions in EU27- representative sample across all domains

• Is there an overview (incl. [e-mail] addresses) of all heritage institutions in your country?

• Can the heritage institutions in your country be divided intoby subdomains?
