We wish everyone could receive a free Guide each quarter, but costs prohibit it. If you have run a race in the last quarter, we will mail you a Running Guide for the next quarter. If you do not get one and would like to receive one, you can pick up a copy at one of the 1st Place Sports running store locations.

There will be a total of 17 races, with all races counted in the scoring. Overall scoring will be determined by using age-graded performance factors (these factors are determined by current age standards built into our computer and are based on your time compared to the current world record for your age). The points used in the overall calculation will be the actual percentage that a runner scores in each race. No points will be awarded unless you are 60% or more of the factor. Age-group scoring will be based on the top ten finishers in each age-group and will be scored independent of the overall points.

The Jacksonville Grand Prix is a series of Jacksonville’s best road races. These races are top-quality, established events that feature ChampionChip timing. The courses are measured accurately. Each event offers race results, and are conducted by groups or individuals that have experience and expertise in the field of road racing. As a participant in a Grand Prix event, you can rest assured that you are running a worthwhile race.

Anybody can compete in the Jacksonville Grand Prix. You do not have to register for this. All you have to do is run the events. 1st Place Sports will score each race to see if you have accumulated points in the series. The Grand Prix is designed to determine who the top Jacksonville area runners are, given the age difference. There are two ways to score points. First, in the overall competition based on age-graded performances (see above); and second, by finishing in the top ten in your age-group. The age-group and overall competition are scored separately. The scores are not combined.

Cash awards will be given to the top five overall finishers. It is important to note that in this scoring system males and females are combined. The cash awards are as follows:1st place $1,000 4th place $2002nd place $600 5th place $100 3rd place $400Prize money will not be awarded to anyone below the 20-24 age-group unless they have completed their college eligibility. After we have determined who the top five runners are for the cash awards, we will determine

an age-group champion in each of the age-groups as outlined in the rules section. Official Jacksonville Grand Prix awards will be given to the top three finishers in each age-group, but to qualify, a runner must accumulate at least 500 points. Awards will be presented at the JTC Banquet in June.

1. All runners will compete for points in their age-groups. Points are earned by placing in the top ten of the following male and female divisions: 10 and under, 11-13,14-19, 20-24, 25-29, 30-34, 35-39, 40-44, 45-49, 50-54, 55-59, 60-64, 65-69, 70-74 and 75 and over.

2. The points scored for placing in the top ten of an age-group are: 1st=100, 2nd=85, 3rd=70, 4th=55, 5th=45, 6th=35, 7th=25, 8th=20, 9th=15, 10th=10.

3. Overall scoring will be based on age-graded performance factors as determined by USA Track and Field.

4. Points as calculated by 1st Place Sports shall be official.5. Points for the 13 and under age group will based on

the accompanying 6K race with the Outback Distance Classic, the 5K in th Pumpkin Run, and the 5 mile in the Winter Beach Run. There will be no scoring for this age group in the Jacksonville Marathon. We do not encourage 13 and under participation in races over 10 miles.

6. All races count in a runner’s score.7. All runners will count in scoring no matter where

they reside, unless the runner is receiving financial assistance from the race as an invited runner.

8. Overall Scoring is based on age-graded performance factors. Age-group scoring is based on finishing in the top ten in your age group.

9. All races on the Grand Prix will display the Jacksonville Grand Prix logo indicating that they are an official event of the Jacksonville Grand Prix.

10. In the case of ties at the end of the season, the runner with the best finish overall will be the winner.

11. The 1st Place Sports website at www.1stplacesports.com will be the official site for the Jax Grand Prix. Results will be updated on a timely basis.

12. The schedule of events and the dates of these events as outlined in this publication are tentative. You should check the official entry form to make sure of date, time, and grand prix status.

13. A runner’s age-group for age-group championship tabulations will be the age of that runner on the date of his or her first Grand Prix race. Example: If a runner starts out the season as 44 years old and turns 45 after a couple of races, that runner would be considered 44 for all Grand Prix races in our tabulations.

14. Prize money will not be paid to anyone under the age of 21 years.

15. Overall winners will be removed from the age-groups at the end on the season.

16. To qualify for an age-group award, a runner must accumulate 500 points.

17. A runner must have scored points by December 31st to be eligible for calculations.

» MARATHON TRAINING SCHEDULERunning a marathon is a big decision for any runner.

Therefore, be positive that you are really sure this

is something you want to do before you tackle this

schedule. If this is your first attempt at the 26.2

mile distance, you will need to be running at least

three miles a day to start this training. You should

have been running at least a year, two years is

recommended. As you move through the schedule

try not to miss the long run. It is the most important

aspect of training for a marathon. The longest run

you should do prior to race day is twenty miles.

Running over this distance in training is too risky for

injury, plus saving the thrill of running the 26.2 mile

distance for the race can be very gratifying.

The days of the week can be rotated to fit your

schedule. The schedule is twenty weeks leading

up to the marathon. The last two weeks before the

race are designed to let you rest and build up your

strength for the big day. Not resting in the last ten

days before a marathon is the biggest mistake that

new runners make. Good luck!

1. Don’t start out too fast. The best way to have a successful race is to run an even pace. Run at the pace that you ran your long runs.

2. Wear the same shoes that you used to do your long runs. Do not buy a new pair of shoes to use in the race unless you can run at least three of your long runs in them.

3. Drink water before, during and after the race. Don’t wait until you are thirsty to get water. Start drinking a few hours before the race and drink at every opportunity during the event.

4. Don’t do anything new on race day. Eat and drink what you usually do before your long run.

5. Get up early on race day and give yourself plenty of time to get to the starting line.

6. Line up at the starting line in the area not to close to the front. This will help keep you at a reasonable pace.

7. Read the race instructions in your race packet prior to reporting to the starting line. The information they contain can be very helpful to your having a good safe race.
