TERMS AND CONDITIONS OF APPOINTMENT(Tenure-Track Appointment)

Dr. Irina A. Albert See accompanying appointment letter dated February 5, 2008

This document describes in greater detail the appointment offered in the accompanying letter. The University of Wisconsin-Madison has a long tradition of academic freedom and strong faculty participation in the governance of the University. Tenure-track appointments at the University are governed by a document which is called Faculty Policies and Procedures. Chapters 7-10, pertaining to faculty appointments, can be found at http://www.secfac.wisc.edu/governance/FPP/Table_of_Contents.htm .

Beginning with the second year of a three-year initial probationary appointment, non-tenured faculty members in the College of Letters and Science are reviewed annually by the executive committee (the tenured faculty) of their department for possible reappointment, promotion, or non-renewal. After the initial appointment, reappointment at the non-tenured level is for one year at a time, with the decision made at least a year in advance of the expiration of the current appointment. Reappointment or promotion to tenure is based on performance in teaching, scholarly research, and service, and on institutional need. A recommendation for promotion to tenure is possible at any time, and a final decision concerning tenure must be made before the end of the sixth probationary year. Any post-Ph.D. prior faculty service at another university will be included in probationary service here; the effect on each appointment is specified in the individual appointment letter. While our standards for the awarding of tenure are high, the University of Wisconsin-Madison does not have tenure quotas or a fixed number of tenured faculty positions. Every assistant professor is eligible for promotion, and each of our initial appointments is made with the hope that the individual will warrant promotion to tenure at a later date.

Academic year salaries are paid in nine equal installments on the first of each month from October to June. Academic year appointees, whether full or part-time, do not earn vacation and are expected to work during the appointment period except for days specifically listed as paid holidays.

The University annually reviews the salary of each member of the faculty, offering increments under a merit raise system. The funds available vary from one year to another according to the level established by the state legislature.

Information describing the University's comprehensive program of staff benefits can be found at http://www.bussvc.wisc.edu/ecbs/emp-gen-bens-menu.html . Note especially the descriptions of and early deadlines for health care coverage and income continuation insurance. You will need to contact the departmental administrator for enrollment forms and deadlines.

Summer employment at the University, whether for teaching or research, is limited to eight months over three summers, with each summer equivalent to two-ninths of the salary rate for the preceding academic year. While a Summer Sessions teaching position is not guaranteed by the University, faculty members are encouraged to apply through their departments. Summer salary grants are also available on a competitive basis from the Research Committee of the Graduate School.

New faculty must obtain a photo ID card, which is provided by the University.

Any agreement for reimbursing moving expenses pertaining to this offer is specified in the individual appointment letter. However, it is important to note that, per Wisconsin Statutes, reimbursement of moving expenses is contingent upon the written approval of the Provost prior to the time of your move.

Before you move, it is essential that you contact your departmental administrator to confirm that the UW-Madison, Request for Reimbursement for Relocation Expenses and/or Temporary Lodging form has been completed and approved by the Provost and to obtain other important information about your move, such as contract vendors, estimates, and travel advances.

Any equipment purchased using University administered funds remains the property of the University of Wisconsin-Madison.

The use of funds provided by the Graduate School, including those provided as part of the initial offer, must be used in accordance with guidelines and regulations established by the Graduate School. Research Committee salary support is an investment in University faculty. As such, faculty are required to be in residence on the Madison campus for the semester following the use of Graduate School extramural support. Additional information on the Graduate School’s Office of Research and Sponsored Program can be found at http://www.rsp.wisc.edu .

It is the policy of the College of Letters and Science to provide reasonable accommodation for qualified faculty with disabilities. If you need accommodation to perform the responsibilities of your position, please contact the Chair of the Department.

The Wisconsin Administrative Code (UWS 8) states that faculty may not use their public position for personal gain in a manner contrary to the interests of the University of Wisconsin System. You should consult with your department chair before making commitments to outside activities. An annual report on outside activities must be filed by all faculty, limited and academic staff.

As a State of Wisconsin employee, faculty may not earn more than $12,000 additional compensation from any other state agency during the same calendar year, Wis. Stat. 16.417(2). Each UW institution in the State of Wisconsin System is considered a separate agency. You need to be aware of this limitation and know that payments in excess of $12,000 are subject to forfeiture.

This offer of employment is contingent upon verification of your identity and work authorization as required by the Immigration Reform and Control Act of 1986. Please see the attachment or http://www.uscis.gov/portal/site/uscis for the explanation of the Form I-9, Section 1 of which must be completed and returned to the department on or before your hire date. The required documents must be presented in person, within three days of your employment begin date. If you do not have the originals of the necessary documents, you must present a receipt from a government agency for replacement document(s), within three days, and you must present the required document itself within 90 days of your employment begin date. The law prohibits the University from employing or continuing to employ an individual who has not provided the required documents within the relevant time period.
