Feature Summary

Introduction

This feature delivers hardware and software to support new 1x Advanced (1xA) air

interface technology. This feature introduces a new channel board (CMU-E) that is based

on QC CSM-8700 ASIC and new 3GPP2 Rev E standards.

1x Advanced provides air interface capacity improvement that can go up to 83 Erlang in

R36.1 per carrier for 100% penetration of new terminals. This increase in capacity allows

the customer to consolidate as many as three regular 3G1x carriers into a single 1xA

carrier.

Benefits

This feature provides significant benefits for CDMA 3G1x customers. Some of which are

as listed:

• The critical benefit of 1x Advanced technology is to use the air interface improvement

to consolidate 3G1x voice traffic into fewer carriers. 1xA gain of spectral efficiency

on the order of more than 3 times with respect to 3G1X EVRC, can be used by the

operators to accommodate other 3G and 4G technologies or data growth. For instance,

1xA provides spectrum preservation and allows a broader bandwidth for LTE

deployment. 1xA can benefit the customer in markets that are spectrum constrained,

allowing the customer to continue serving voice customers while offloading data

traffic to LTE.

• 1x Advanced simplifies the customer's RF planning due to fewer number of carriers

that need to be handled by the user’s OA&M provisioning systems.

• By integrating 1x Advanced, the customer also benefits from greener power

consumption. 1x Advanced offers reduction in cell site power consumption due to the

fewer numbers of 3G1x carriers needed to support the same overall voice traffic.

Furthermore, reduction on the transmit power of the existing and new mobiles can be

achieved.

• 1x Advanced provides an average of 2dB of Reverse Link budget improvement

through Interference Cancellation supported on the CMU-E board. This improvement

can be used for coverage improvement for existing users, or for increased air interface

capacity for users that are Reverse Link capacity limited; 1x Advanced can improve

the call quality and reduce the call drop rate for those calls that are RL limited.

• New 1x Advanced devices supporting new Radio Configurations and Mobile Receive

Diversity (MRD) enables operators to almost triple the voice capacity immediately

after the channel upgrade. When 100% dual antenna handsets penetration is reached

on the service provider network, it is estimated that a capacity gain of a factor of 3.5

times can be obtained. When the market is limited to new single antenna handsets that

are 1x Advanced compatible, the capacity gains are a factor of 2.15 times.

• 1x Advanced is backward compatible with previous revisions of 3G1x and therefore

the new channel board supports the 3G1x traffic also.

Issues and Limitations

Following are a couple of limitations identified for this feature:

• The CMU-E board is limited to support 6SC (1C-6S, 2C-3S, 6C1S).

• The CMU-E board is limited to 512 CEs on the 1st release (R36.1). The full hardware

capability of 1024 CEs will be enabled on a second release.

Note: The limitation to 512 CEs is removed in R37 when the second core of the

CMU-E processor is turned ON. After R37 feature- 1xAdvanced - CMU-e Expansion

to support 2C 1xA (FID13627.6) is deployed the number of CEs that can be

provisioned is 1024.

• The CMU-E support of two 1xA carriers in 3-sectors is specific to a 2 branch Receive

Diversity configuration. When 4 branch Receive Diversity is deployed, the CMU-E

supports one 1xA carrier in 3-sectors.

• Assigning the same 1xA carrier number to multiple CMU-Es for CE pooling is not

allowed. However, CMU-Es configured under different CDMs can be assigned the

same carrier number.

• Assigning of legacy 3G1x carriers to the CMU-E is not allowed. Carrier Type must

be 1xA.

• Cross CMU Technology CE Pooling is not allowed (CMU-E with CMU-IVB and

CMU-V).

• In most CMU-E configured cells routine diagnostics RTDIAG configurations will

skip removing the CMU-E for testing due to OOS limits. Board level diagnostics can

be run using the TICLI command DGN UCL.

• TICLI Move: OC, overhead channels, is not allowed with CMU-E.

implemented the BTS 1x Advanced CMU-E channel card. 1xA delivery under

FID-13627.22 is a Standard feature in the Alcatel-Lucent development program.

The following changes are included on the Cell and ECP release load that includes 1x

Advanced:

• ECP Call Processing- 1x Advanced involves the support for new Radio

Configurations (RC8 and RC11). The new RCs are implemented in ECP-Cell

Interface messages at call setup and handoff. Support for the new RCs in the ANSI-41

handoff message are also implemented.

• Dynamic Power Control - Forward and Reverse Power Control changes for RC11

and RC8 are implemented. The main improvement achieved by 1xA comes from

support of Mobile Receive Diversity (MRD), power control needs software for

optimal support of MRD. Additionally, there are some enhancements beyond the

scope of 3GPP2 3G1x Rev E standards to support advanced QLIC (QLIC+) for

forward power control and RLIC for Reverse Power control.

• CE Licensing - The software licensing policy for 1x Advanced CMU-E is similar to

CMU-V/CMU-IVB. RCS are used to configure and initialize the CMU-E similar to

other CMUs, but board level Licensing is not required. CMU-E uses the legacy

CMU-IVB CE provisioning scheme at RC/V Level. A new CE License and Comcode

is developed for the CMU-E channel elements. The customer needs to purchase CE

licenses in 32 CE increments with a minimum of 32 and a maximum of 153600*32

CE, where 153600=4000*12*(1024/32), is the maximum block number. The CMU-E

channel card is delivered as part of the purchase of CE licenses.

Impact on Technician Interface

Introduction

This section describes the impact of 1xAdvanced Air Interface Technology on CMU-E

feature on Technician Interface.

Input messages

The following input messages are supported by the 1xAdvanced Air Interface Technology

on CMU-E feature:

• MOVE:DN

• MOVE:IMSI

• EXC:CELL-FT

• DGN:CELL-UCL

• RST:CELL-UCL

• RMV:CELL-UCL

Output reports

The following output reports are supported by the 1xAdvanced Air Interface Technology

on CMU-E feature:

• OP-CELL-CCU

• OP-OC-CELL

• OP-ALARM

• REPT-CELL-HEH-2

• CFR and OCNS have added RC11 the new radio configuration profile for

1X-Advanced.

Note: 1. OP-CELL-CCU also adds the CMU-E to the CCU Board Type field.

2. DGN, RST, RMV must be run with unconditional option to bypass oos limit. A

conditional command will be rejected. Since a CMU-E can support two fully loaded

1xA carriers with 100% coverage then it is assumed that there will only be one

CMU-E in the cell support those carrier. So CE OOS Limits for the CMU-E does not

make any sense; since a conditional remove will never be allowed due to 1xA service

impact. Therefore an unconditional remove has to be used to remove the CMU-E and

the carriers from service. Following this strategy, a CDL remove of a URC that owns

a CMU-E will be reject. Since the removal of the URC also removes the CMU-E, a

UCL remove of the URC is required.

3. Move:OC overhead channels are not supported for CMU-E 1xA carrier.

Feature Activation

Purpose

This procedure activates the 1xAdvanced Air Interface Technology on CMU-E feature in a

CDMA2000® network.

Note: The new 1x Advanced feature is activated if the customer has implemented the

BTS 1x Advanced CMU-E channel card and enabled the feature on cell2 form. As this

feature is a Standard feature, no Activation license is required. CE activation is

controlled by a License instead of by a FAF.

Procedure

Perform the following steps:

...................................................................................................................................................................................................

1 Deploy the CMU-E channel board to support 1x Advanced.

Note: The CMU-E can support up to 1024 channel elements (CE) on the forward and

on the reverse link.

...................................................................................................................................................................................................

2 Upgrade the Cell and ECP SW to the release where 1x Advanced is supported.

...................................................................................................................................................................................................

3 Purchase CE Licenses along with the CMU-E channel board. CE Licensing for CMU-E is

done at the ECP Level. There will be a total pool of CEs that the board draws from when

it is equipped in RC/V. This licensing strategy allows the user to activate CEs at ECP

level and replaces board level licensing, like in previous channel boards: CMU-IVB and

CMU-V, where license is tied to the board serial number. Like the CMU-IVB and

CMU-V, licenses are activated in blocks of 32 CEs with a minimum of 32 and a

maximum of 1024 CEs per CMU-E board.

...................................................................................................................................................................................................

4 Provision an activation switch bit as a translation parameter to activate 1xA per cell.

1.2288*Max_Diff_Delay+[2ˆ(Probe_Pn_

Ran]-1, the entered value is greater or equal

to 3 frames and if it is not, then the system

sends the user a warning message

indicating that the entered value will cause

the Channel Element (CE) maximum

compensation delay to be exceeded and

CDMA operation is affected.

2. When the parameter is changed the system

displays a warning message saying that it is

a non-updatable parameter and must be

followed by a stable clear and the call

processing capability may be lost in the

interim.

3. When the sum of Maximum Access

Channel Message Capsule Size and

Access Channel Preamble Length

(pam_sz) is equal or greater than 15, a

warning message is displayed to indicate

that such settings causes any equipped

CMU-E boards to block setup of any

Access Channels, so that the board will be

incapable of setting up or carrying any

traffic, once the values are applied.
