ABB Mechanical Three Phase AutoLink Sectionalizer was tested according to ANSI IEEE C37.63 (IEEE Standard Requirements for Overhead, Pad-Mounted, Dry-Vault, and Submersible Automatic Line Sectionalizers for AC Systems).

The following design test report confirms that ABB Mechanical Three Phase AutoLink Sectionalizer meets or exceeds all specifications per ANSI IEEE C37.63.

The tests were performed in new units as requested by the standard. There are two versions of 27kV: porcelain and silicone insulation.

ABB Mechanical Three Phase AutoLink Sectionalizer is based on ABB Single Phase Electronic AutoLink Sectionalizer. Please refer to the ABB Single Phase Electronic AutoLink Sectionalizer Design Test Report for further information on other type tests.

Porcelain insulation: 150kV peak, 1.2/50 microsecond voltage impulse.

Test procedure: The switch was mounted on a wooden cross arm. Three positive polarity waves and three negative polarity waves were applied to the switch in all required configurations. The mounting frame was grounded in all test positions.

Results: The switch withstood the three positive and three negative polarity waves in all test configurations. No flashovers or insulation failures were recorded during the test. The switch complied with the lightning impulse test requirements of the standard.

Clause 6.8 Mechanical operation tests

Test Requirements: IEEE Std C37.41-2000 for cutout type sectionalizers. Perform 200 mechanical operations and comply with the required after test conditions.

Test Procedure: The switch was mounted on the standard galvanized cross arm. Current higher than actuating current was applied, allowing one of the phases to count and operate when it reached the setting. The two other phases were supposed to fall open immediately after the first one hit the cross arm.

20A was applied from a low voltage source, no high voltage is required. The switch was subjected to 200 automatic operations.

The operations were performed as follows, feeding one phase at a time and rotating the pulsing AutoLink between all three phases for a total of 200 operations:

65 automatic operations with all three AutoLinks set in one count.

65 automatic operations with all three AutoLinks set in two counts.

70 automatic operations with all three AutoLinks set in three counts.

When the pulsed AutoLink operated, it mechanically tripped the remaining two AutoLinks. The device was reset and the process repeated.

Results: All testing was done in accordance with the above stated standards and the tested devices passed mechanical operation tests performing 200 operations with no visible defects

On site environmental tests were performed at Koeberg Insulator Pollution Test Station (KIPTS).

KIPTS is known internationally as a severe environmental testing facility run by ESKOM Electric Utility located approximately 17 miles (27 km) north of Cape Town, South Africa.

The device was installed October 2009 and remained installed for six months. The device was energized at all times and exposed to extremely high UV, wind, sand, salt fog and other marine environments during the six month test.

The device was operated for the first time in April 2010 after six months. It was tripped by a low voltage current supply, with 60A.

The extreme environment did not have any adverse effects on the insulators or the mechanical operation of the device.

NOTE:

Severe environment tests are not required by the stated standard, this test was performed additionally.

The objective of this test was to analyze the behavior of the metal parts and mechanisms. For insulator environmental tests please contact the factory.

Results: ABB specifies the Mechanical Three Phase AutoLink for all installations one mile away from the cost.
