Quick Facts and ContentsA staple in the New York region and an emerging program on the national stage, the Manhattanville College Athletic Department continues to bolster its reputation as a program on the rise in all areas: athletic achievement, academic success and overall participation.

More than 325 Valiant student-athletes (nearly 20 percent of the student body) took part in intercollegiate athletics during the 2011-12 school year showcasing the continued and rapid growth of athletics at Manhattanville. With women’s golf beginning play as a varsity sport in 2012-13, the program now sponsors 20 competitive intercollegiate teams – including eight teams that have been established or re-established since 2007 alone.

And teams at Manhattanville do not just compete, they win. Three teams earned conference regular-season or tournament championships in 2011-12 and two Valiant squads (men’s soccer and men’s golf) made an appearance in the NCAA Tournament. Fifteen of 21 Valiant squads earned berths in their respective conference championships last year, including the third straight title and seventh in 11 seasons for men’s golf. In addition, the men’s hockey, men’s golf and women’s hockey teams all received national rankings over the course of the year.

On an individual level, many Valiant student-athletes were honored in 2011-12 as well, led by All-America selections Eros Olazabal (men’s soccer) and Dan Fiorito (baseball). Manhattanville also boasted three Freedom Conference Players of the Year and two Freedom Rookies of the Year to go with 47 combined All-Conference honorees. In recent years, at least 35 former Valiants have gone on to play their sport professionally either domestically or overseas as well.

But at Manhattanville, athletics is only one part of becoming a well-rounded student-athlete. In the classroom, Valiant athletes consistently achieve higher grade-point averages than the student body as a whole, as evidenced by the 3.219 Athletic Department GPA for the Spring 2012 semester and the fact that all but one Valiant teams recorded a team GPA of 3.000 or higher for the spring term. In addition, men’s tennis senior Michael Capozzi became the department’s fi rst two-time CoSIDA Academic All-American and was one of two CoSIDA Academic All-District representatives, while the department also boasted 89 Academic All-Conference honorees and two MAC Scholar-Athletes of the Year.

Community service also continues to play a vital role in the student-athlete experience at Manhattanville, as each team performs hundreds of community service hours each year. In addition to active involvement with many local sports teams and youth organizations both on and off campus, Valiant teams sponsor events such as the women’s basketball “Pink Zone” night and the annual “Soccer for a Cure” event to promote cancer awareness. As a result of these and other efforts, the school was the recipient of two Jostens/NADIIIAA Community Service Awards in 2009, one of only 13 institutions honored and the only school to receive two awards. The service aspect of the Valiant student-athlete experience plays a large role in helping Valiant athletes fulfi ll the college’s mission of educating students to be ethically and socially responsible leaders in a global community.

Manhattanville Athletics AdministrationDirector of Athletics Keith LevinthalTenth Year • Hobart ’95

Keith Levinthal begins his 10th full year as Director of Athletics at Manhattanville College in 2012-13 and continues to establish the school as a regional and national leader in athletic success, academic achievement and community involvement. The architect and head coach of Manhattanville’s nationally recognized men’s hockey program before stepping aside in October 2011, Levinthal continues his role in keeping Manhattanville in the local, regional and national spotlight.

Levinthal has led the Valiant athletic program to unprecedented heights in recent years, as Manhattanville has collected 52 conference championships – 26 regular-season championships and 26 tournament titles – in the last eight seasons alone. In that span, the program has also produced 27 conference Players of the Year, 15 All-American selections and one National Player of the Year.

As a head coach with the men’s hockey team, Levinthal stepped aside with the most wins of any mentor in Manhattanville department history, posting a 202-84-28 (.688) record in 12 seasons and twice earning ECAC West Conference Coach of the Year

honors. He left as the 14th winningest coach in NCAA hockey history (all Divisions) and sixth among Division III leaders in terms of winning percentage, and led the team to four NCAA Tournaments, four ECAC West Tournament titles and a pair of fi rst-place fi nishes in the ECAC West regular-season standings.

Under Levinthal’s guidance, Manhattanville as a whole continued its recent string of very successful seasons in 2011-12, with both the men’s soccer and men’s golf teams earning berths in the NCAA Tournament and 15 teams overall reaching postseason play. The men’s soccer team picked up the program’s fi rst-ever at-large bid after a program-record 15-win season, while the men’s golf team dominated the fi eld with a 55-stroke victory at the Freedom Conference Championships and also earned the fi rst national ranking in program history as well during the fall. A pair of Valiants - men’s soccer junior Eros Olazabal and baseball senior Dan Fiorito - were honored as All-Americans by the end of the year, while two student-athletes (Emil Sjoberg and Michael Capozzi) were named MAC Scholar-Athletes of the Year as well.

In 2007-08, Levinthal guided the Athletics Department as it transitioned from the Skyline Conference to the Freedom Conference and also reintroduced

volleyball and cross country programs to the school. The Valiants saw immediate success in its new conference as two teams clinched Freedom Conference regular-season championships and three programs won conference tournaments in advancing to the NCAA Tournament. The women’s hockey team advanced to the program’s third National Championship game, while the women’s soccer team reached the NCAA Tournament for the fi rst time in program history.

Levinthal also led the Valiants to a record-breaking year in their fi nal season in the Skyline Conference in 2006-07, as a program-record six teams won conference championships and a record fi ve teams qualifi ed for the NCAA Tournament. His men’s hockey team spent 13 consecutive weeks as the top-ranked team in the nation and earned its fi rst-ever berth in the national semifi nals, while goaltender Andrew Gallant became the fi rst Manhattanville student-athlete to be named a National Player of the Year. Six coaches were named as conference Coach of the Year, while a program-best four Valiant student-athletes were also named CoSIDA/ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District honorees. And, for the fi rst time ever, Valiant teams won more league championships than any other Skyline Conference team.

Levinthal saw immediate athletic success during his fi rst full year at the helm, as all 14 of Manhattanville’s athletic programs participated in postseason

play during the 2003-04 year. Four teams earned bids to the ECAC postseason tournaments, while the women’s ice hockey program earned its third consecutive NCAA Tournament appearance. In 2004, Levinthal also received the honor of beginning a four-year term on the NCAA Men’s and Women’s Ice Hockey Rules Committee, serving as one of 13 overall members and one of just four from Division III institutions.

But in addition to athletic success, at the heart of every successful program lie sound resources for its lifeblood – its student-athletes. Therefore, Levinthal has made it a priority to provide the resources needed to create an environment in which Manhattanville student-athletes can achieve at the highest level in all areas: academically, socially and athletically.

A 1995 graduate of Hobart College, Levinthal is committed to developing all aspects of the athletics program. In his tenure at Manhattanville, Levinthal’s agenda has included:

Student-Athlete Development - Manhattanville continues to be on the cutting edge in the total development of its student-athletes. Valiant student-athletes have exhibited a strong presence and desire to serve the New York area. All varsity teams participate in outreach activities, positively impacting numerous area youth groups, hospitals, schools and agencies.

Professionalism - Under Levinthal’s guidance, Manhattanville athletics received a much-needed face-lift. With a new website, logo, team colors and method of business, he has streamlined and energized the department. The result has been increased exposure to Manhattanville student-athletes, improved performance both on and off the fi eld, and increased support from fans and alumni.

Exposure - Manhattanville Athletics continues to maintain a strong presence on national and regional media outlets. Levinthal has helped increase the program’s media opportunities as well as displaying the values of the Valiants constantly in the public eye.

Manhattanville Coaching StaffHead Coach Arlen MarshallFirst Season • Manhattanville ’10

A six-year member of the Manhattanville hockey program as both a player and coach, Arlen Marshall ’10 was named the third head men’s hockey coach in Manhattanville history in August 2012 and begins his first season at the helm of his alma mater in 2012-13.

Certainly no stranger to Manhattanville hockey, Marshall spent

the last two seasons as an assistant coach at the school under both program architect Keith Levinthal and Eric Lang, and immersed himself completely in the day-to-day operations of the Valiant men’s hockey program. He helped to coordinate practices, scouting and video work while also planning travel itineraries and budgets. In addition, he recruited highly sought-after student-athletes and

managed team academic affairs throughout the season as well. A member of the Valiant hockey family since arriving on campus as a freshman in 2006, Marshall

will continue to lead the Manhattanville program – this time in a head coaching capacity – while also looking to increase alumni support and build on the tradition of one of the school’s most successful programs.

His first coaching role came after completing one of the most prolific on-ice careers in Valiant history. A two-year co-captain who wore a letter in three of his four seasons, Marshall completed his career as one of just three Manhattanville players to reach the 100-point plateau thanks to 38 goals and 64 assists in 105 career games. He graduated third in career points, fourth in assists and sixth in goals all-time at the school, while also departing second in games played and sixth in power-play goals for a career.

In his senior season, Marshall set new career highs with 26 assists and 35 points to

help lead the Valiants to the ECAC West Conference Tournament championship, one of three ECAC West Tournament titles that Manhattanville achieved in his four years with the team. The Valiants also reached a pair of NCAA Tournaments and finished all four seasons in the top-10 in the nation according to USCHO.com.

A native of Quill Lake, Saskatchewan, the forward graduated from Manhattanville in

2010 with a bachelor’s degree in communications and political science. He also received his master’s degree in sports business management from the school in 2012.

Stephen Mallaro enters his first season as an assistant coach with the Manhattanville men’s hockey team for the 2012-13 season.

As the top assistant coach for head coach Arlen Marshall, Mallaro will be responsible for much of the day-to-day operation of the men’s hockey program, including on- and off-campus recruiting, fundraising and alumni affairs, and game and practice preparation and instruction.

Mallaro comes to Manhattanville after playing one season of professional hockey in the East Coast Hockey League (ECHL) with the Elmira Jackals, Trenton Titans and the Gwinnett Gladiators. Finished the season with Gwinnett and was a member of the first place in the

Southern Division at the conclusion of the 2011-12 season.

Prior to his professional playing days, Mallaro took the ice for the Oswego Lakers of the SUNYAC Conference where he was a member of the 2009-10 SUNYAC Championship team. Following the conference title, Mallaro and the Lakers took part in the Frozen Four in Lake Placid in 2010, followed by a season as an at-large selection in 2011 that led to a place in the Final Four in Minneapolis, Minn.

Mallaro graduated from SUNY Oswego in May of 2011 with a bachelor’s degree in criminal justice while minoring in athletic coaching.

A native of Syracuse, N.Y., Mallaro currently resides in Purchase as he pursues a degree in sport business management.

The ECAC West ConferencePerennially one of the toughest conferences in Division III, the ECAC West Conference has provided Manhattanville with a very tough challenge throughout the program’s history.

The ECAC West Conference has consistently produced national-championship caliber programs and, despite only fielding five teams in recent years, is arguably the strongest top-to-bottom conference in the nation. With the addition of Nazareth College this season, the six-team conference will continue to provide high quality hockey and make every ECAC West game vital on a conference and national level. Last year, all five conference squads were nationally ranked and at multiple points in the year three of the five ECAC West teams were in the top-15 USCHO.com Div. III national rankings at the same time.

Since the program’s inception in 1999, Manhattanville has been one of the ECAC West’s premier squads, earning six conference championships (two regular-season titles, four tournament titles) in 13 years.

2012-13 Manhattanville Men’s Hockey Media Guide 7

2012-13 Season PreviewThe Manhattanville men’s hockey team will begin yet another new chapter

in program history in 2012-13, as former Valiant great Arlen Marshall ’10 takes over the reins of his alma mater and looks to get the Valiants back to their customary perch near the top of the ECAC West Conference and in the mix for an NCAA Tournament berth.

The program continued its recent streak of instability at the top this summer as Marshall became the third head coach in the last three years, replacing the man under whom he served as an assistant coach last season, Eric Lang. But with a pedigree of success both as a player and an assistant coach at Manhattanville, Marshall is ready to bring the program back to its previous heights and return the squad to the NCAA Tournament.

The Valiants do bring back an experienced roster to help Marshall with his goals, as the team returns 19 letterwinners from a year ago. Leading the team on and off the ice will be a quartet of captains, as seniors Ron Smith and Brett Skalski will serve as co-captains this year while senior Scott Hudson and junior Craig Simchuk will serve as assistant captains for the first time.

Manhattanville will have to prove some people wrong to get back near the top of the conference, as the Valiants were uncharacteristically picked to finish fifth out of six teams in the ECAC West Conference Preseason Poll. Hobart was the near unanimous pick to finish first, earning all but one of the first-place votes and 34 points overall, followed by Neumann (27). Utica (26) came in third, followed by Elmira (19), Manhattanville (14) and Nazareth (6).

FORWARDSManhattanville was not hard hit by graduation on the offensive side of

the ice, as the team returns five of its six players to score 10 or more goals a year ago and loses only 27 of its 99 goals scored overall from 2011-12.

Hudson and classmate Brendan Turner were the squad’s top-two scorers last season and will be called upon to maintain their production as seniors. Hudson led Manhattanville in goals and points last year on the way to All-ECAC West Conference first-team honors, netting a career-high 14 goals – including seven on the power play – and adding 16 assists for a team-best 30 points. Turner had a breakout junior campaign with 11 goals and 16 assists, earning All-ECAC West honorable mention laurels for the first time.

A trio of forwards also hovered around the 20-point plateau last season as well and will be counted upon yet again in 2012-13. Skalski tied his career high with 20 points a year ago, scoring 10 goals and assisting on 10, and will be gunning for a third straight 20-plus-point campaign. Junior Luc Van Natter upped his game as a sophomore last year, tying for fourth on the team with 10 goals and also chipping in 11 assists, and will look to continue his improvement in year three. Sophomore Mark Rivera was named the ECAC West Co-Rookie of the Year after scoring 10 goals with 10 assists last season, and will be asked to avoid a sophomore slump and provide similar numbers this year.

The Valiants are more than just the top two lines, however, as the squad

boasts a deep roster of forwards. Smith set new career highs in all offensive categories with three goals and 12 assists for 15 points as a junior, and will use both his offensive output and his hard-nosed play (70 penalty minutes in 2011-12) to get under the skin of the opposition. Simchuk is another player not afraid of contact, and he will also look for

more scoring

opportunities to improve on the six goals and six assists

he posted a year ago.Two other upperclassmen, senior Jason

Bowles and Louis Balzano, also will look for more production with consistent playing time.

Balzano had two goals and five assists in 20 contests a year ago, while Bowles registered

two goals and three helpers in 20 appearances. Sophomore Paul Sirignano also chipped in with

six assists in 12 games last year, and along with classmates Luke Challier and Eric McClure will look for a more stable role in the top-12 in 2012-13.

Marshall also welcomes in a quintet of freshmen, all of whom will look to crack the starting lineup right away and make an impact on the squad offensively. Matt Coleman, Aaron Enns, Phil Lux and Mitch Snider all come to Purchase with impressive scoring credentials at their junior teams last year, while Paul Allan Bamberg looks to continue the strong tradition of Swedish scorers at Manhattanville as well.

DEFENSEThe team will have a much different look on the blue line this season,

as three full-time starters from a year ago are gone due to graduation and will need to be replaced.

The only returning defenseman to skate in more than 17 games last season is junior Adam Young, who appeared in 24 contests and tallied three goals and seven assists for the second consecutive season. Classmate Marc Zanoni is the only other upperclassman scheduled to roam the blue line, having chipped in a goal and two assists in 17 games last year. Both players will be needed to provide some experience for a young Valiant blue line.

Sophomores Joel Rosenberg, JP Witkop and Rich Meyer will all look for increased responsibilities in their second seasons as well. Rosenberg appeared in 17 games and notched a pair of assists as a freshman, while Witkop took the ice for six contests and Meyer dressed for two games in his first year with the team.

As a result, the team will have to rely heavily on its three defensive newcomers, as sophomores Anton Racklin and Kevin Struempfler and freshman Nick Giuffrida. Racklin and Struempfler both come to Purchase after a year with Division I programs (Bemidji State and Clarkson, respectively), while Giuffrida will hope to provide some offense from the point after a successful year with the Springfield Pics.

GOALIESThe crease also is a large question mark for Manhattanville heading into

the season after the graduation of three-year starter Pierre-Olivier Lemieux ’12. As a result, two returners and two newcomers will battle for playing time to start the year.

The player with the most collegiate experience was not on the Valiant roster last year, as sophomore Alex Scola comes to Manhattanville after splitting the starting job at UMass Boston in 2011-12. Scola was named to the ECAC East All-Rookie team after posting a 5-4-2 record with a 2.77 goals against average and .891 save percentage in 13 appearances.

Classmate Brian Fleming is the only goalie on the roster to get into a game as a Valiant, having made three appearances (one start) as a freshman. He went 1-0-0 with a 4.79 goals against average and .846 save percentage in just over 100 minutes of action.

Fellow sophomore Tommy Trowell was with the team as a freshman but did not see any action, and will compete along with freshman netminder Kurt Williams for playing time between the pipes.

SCHEDULEThe ECAC West Conference expanded to six teams with the introduction

of Nazareth, and as a result, Manhattanville will have a very competitive 15-game conference schedule to complement an always challenging non-conference slate.

The Valiants start the year with two tough games on the road at defending ECAC West Tournament champion Hobart on November 2-3, followed by the squad’s home openers on November 9-10 against conference newcomer Nazareth. After a pair of non-conference home games, the Valiants will take part in the first of two mid-season tournaments on November 24-25, as the team travels to Castleton State to tackle the Rutland Herald Invitational, where they will face Tufts and either the host Spartans or SUNY Brockport.

Manhattanville faces more tough competition over the New Year’s break, travelling back to Vermont for

the Middlebury Holiday Classic, where they will face off with Wentworth on December 30 and either Middlebury or Babson

on New Year’s Eve. After one more non-league game with SUNY Cortland on January 12, it’s

all ECAC West showdowns for the remainder of the season, including five of the last six games of the regular season played at Playland Ice Casino.

All teams will still make the postseason this year, as the top-two teams receive byes into the semifinals, while the 3/6 and 4/5 games will be played on February 20. The semifinal games follow on February 23, and the ECAC West championship game will be played on March 2, with all games at the rink of the higher seed.

East Coast Division III teams Manhattanville has never played (current programs only): Castleton State, UMass Boston and University of New England (ECAC East); Johnson & Wales and Suffolk (ECAC Northeast); Fitchburg State, Framingham State, Westfield State and Worcester State (MASCAC); Bowdoin, Colby and Tufts (NESCAC)

Year-by-Year Records/All-Time Opponent Records

According to findings released in August by the NCAA Division III Committee on Infractions, in the fall of 2009 Manhattanville College was inconsistent in its financial aid packaging and failed to adequately monitor and document procedures related to the College's financial aid appeals process, particularly with respect to men's ice hockey.According to the NCAA Division III Committee on Infractions, this led to student-athletes receiving more financial aid awards than the general student body. Penalties in this case include two years of probation and increased oversight requirements.Manhattanville has since implemented specific processes and procedures that ensure full compliance with NCAA rules and regulations, and the school looks forward to a return to good standing with the NCAA at the conclusion of its probationary period in the summer of 2014.

Support StaffStrength & Conditioning

Sports Medicine

Focused on the overall development of the student-athlete, the Manhattanville Strength & Conditioning staff maximizes the athletic performance of Valiant athletes by using the most effective and effi cient training techniques to compete injury free at the highest level of competition. The aim is to instill a sense of self-discipline, respect and responsibility to achieve the ultimate goal of a team championship. The strength and conditioning department is housed inside Healthworks, a large, state-of-the-art weight and cardiovascular training facility located on the bot-tom fl oor of the Athletic Department hub, Kennedy Gymnasium. The room includes several power development stations, glut ham benches, decline abdominal benches and physioballs and cardiovascular machines that are available for student-athlete use both in and out of season as well as during the summer. In 2007, Manhattanville College opened the new Richard A. Berman Student Center in the center of campus that includes a fi rst-class workout area for the general student population; as a result, Healthworks is now the exclusive strength and conditioning home of Valiant student-athletes.

The Sports Medicine facilities at Manhattanville are located inside the hub of Manhattanville Athletics, Kennedy Gym, and are the only place where Valiant student-athletes from all 22 varsity sports come to receive comprehensive health care from any of the department’s fully-certifi ed, full-time athletic trainers. The athletic training staff has fi ve main objectives: prevention of athletic injuries; recognition, evaluation and treatment of injuries that do occur; rehabilitation; health care administration; and professional development. The athletic training staff also has on-campus access to state-of-the-art training methods, including ultrasound capability, electrical muscle stimulation and whirlpool treatments. The training staff is also privileged to be affi liated with some of the best physi-cians in the Westchester area, benefi tting from a close relationship with Plancher Orthopedics and Sports Medicine and head team physician Dr. Kevin Plancher, who works out of nearby Greenwich, Conn. The Manhattanville Sports Medicine staff can be contacted throughout the day via phone (914-323-7276), fax (914-323-7212) or email ([email protected]).

Manhattanville College, located just north of New York City in thriving Westchester County, has been educating young people on its beautiful 100-acre campus for over 150 years. With only 1,700 undergraduate students, each student is able to make a personal contribution to the campus community in more than 50 areas of study and 50 campus clubs. Also one of the most diverse campuses in the area, Manhattanville attracts students from 48 states and 76 countries.

SCHOOL HISTORYFounded in 1841 in a three-story building

on Houston Street of Manhattan’s Lower East Side as the Academy of the Sacred Heart, a Catholic boarding school for girls, Manhattanville has been educating students in the New York area for over 150 years.

Six years after its founding in 1847, the academy relocated to an area just north of New York City on a hill overlooking the village of Manhattanville. Destroyed by fi re in 1888, the academy was rebuilt on the same foundation and continued to grow both in curriculum and physical environment. In March of 1917 – 76 years after its founding as an academy – Manhattanville was chartered as a college by the New York State Board of Regents, allowing the school to grant undergraduate and graduate degrees for the fi rst time.

Thirty-f ive years later, in 1952, Manhattanville moved to its current location in Purchase on the former estate of New York Tribune publisher and Ambassador to England Whitelaw Reid. The estate included a mansion, Ophir Hall, which has since been renamed Reid Castle and serves as the

centerpiece of Manhattanville’s picturesque Westchester campus.

ABOUT MANHATTANVILLEAt Manhattanville College, rigorous

academic preparation within a nurturing environment is matched by personalized attention to every student. Our close-knit community of 1,700 undergraduate students and 1,200 graduate students allows each student to make a personal contribution for the school. The student body also is one of the nation’s most diverse according to the Princeton Review, representing almost every state and more than 75 countries.

With more than 50 areas of undergraduate study, ranging from the Liberal Arts to cross-disciplinary studies such as Environmental Science and professional concentrations such as Business and Museum Studies, our

students discover their passions and feel empowered to make a difference in the larger local, national and international communities around us. The school offers Bachelor of Arts, Fine Arts, Music and Science degrees, while also housing a highly respected and blossoming array of graduate programs.

Our students also participate in over 50 social clubs, run an award-winning radio station, and collectively engage in over 30,000 hours of community service each year. Many students also design their own majors by matching interests with courses, providing a unique educational experience both in and out of the classroom.

Our beautiful 100-acre campus with its historic architecture and recent environmentally-responsible buildings is set in thriving Westchester County. Life at Manhattanville blends the leisurely pace of suburbia with the rich cultural resources and fast pace of New York City, which is only thirty minutes away.

THE CORE VALUESProudly a value-oriented liberal arts college

for more than 150 years, Manhattanville is still guided by the mission “to educate students to become ethically and socially responsible leaders for the global community.”

Manhattanville is committed to following its mission by:

• Ensuring the intellectual, ethical and social development of each student within a community of engaged scholars and teachers;

• Encouraging each student to develop as an independent leader and creative thinker in pursuing career and personal goals; and

• Providing a diverse, inclusive and nurturing environment which develops in each student a commitment to service and leadership within a global community.

The architectural and administrative center of Manhattanville’s campus is Reid Castle, which was built in 1892 and overlooks both the quadrangle and the school’s athletic fi elds. On a clear day, you can stand atop the castle and see the skyscrapers of New York City in the distance to the southwest.

A TRADITION OF SERVICECo-educational since 1969 and non-

denominational in its governance since 1971, Manhattanville’s original vision lives on in the tradition of service begun by the Society of the Sacred Heart. This tradition, which preceded the college’s charter, determined the character the school would have: a fi rm belief in the liberalizing effect of the liberal arts, a lively sense of tradition, a wide-ranging interest in the most humane manifestations of the human spirit, and a continuing effort to enhance the local community and to accept responsibility for this segment of human history.

As a result, countless students are involved annually in a number of community service and social action programs. Last year, Manhattanville’s students contributed over 30,000 hours of service while gaining valuable experience in such areas as management, teaching and advocacy.

At the heart of Manhattanville’s ethic of community service and service learning is the Duchesne Center for Religion and Social Justice. The center, which coordinates many of Manhattanville’s myriad service programs, serves as the coordinator, catalyst and incubator for community outreach, cultural, leadership and spiritual initiatives both across the Manhattanville campus and beyond.

In addition, the Connie Hogarth Center

for Social Action works closely with the Departments of Sociology and Political Science and helps the next generation of college-educated activists acquire the practical skills and knowledge necessary for work in some fi eld of social change.

NEW YORK CITYWhile on the school’s beautiful 100-acre

campus, students are only a 30-minute car or Metro North train ride from New York City, giving them the chance to blend the leisurely pace of suburban life in Westchester with the most populous and exciting city in the United States.

Manhattanville’s location offers students a unique opportunity to take advantage of all that New York City has to offer. Whether you want to enjoy a Broadway show, catch a professional sports event, tour a museum or art gallery, shop at the world’s best stores, dine at the country’s best restaurants, or simply stroll around and take in the city’s many well-known landmarks such as the Statue of Liberty or Times Square, New York City offers something for everyone to enjoy.

The school’s proximity to the worldwide leader in fi nance, entertainment, culture and more also offers Manhattanvil le undergraduate and graduate students a unique and exciting opportunity for jobs and

internships both in the city itself and in the thriving New York City suburbs, including right here in Purchase!

MY SOLDIERManhattanville’s most well-known social

action program was founded by a Valiant student-athlete, men’s soccer player Juan Salas, a naturalized U.S. citizen originally from Venezuela who saw active combat duty in Iraq and was commended for saving the life of a child during his tour.

Salas said his mission in Iraq was to “win the hearts and minds of the Iraqi people,” but he continued that while the service was at times challenging: “It was the letters that kept me going,” he said. “From kids, boy scouts, students. A letter was like a piece of gold, something you want to keep for the rest of your life.”

When Salas got back to Manhattanville, he wanted to help his fellow soldiers overseas and approached then-College President Richard A. Berman with an idea. Together with Berman and administrator Anne Gold, they launched the My Soldier program on February 14, 2004.

Participants in the My Soldier program, who were not limited to Manhattanville students, sent letters and occasional care packages overseas to boost the quality of life for American troops.

A non-politically affiliated program, My Solider was wildly successful, with participants from all 50 states and over 400,000 people in total, reaching more than 175,000 U.S. troops.

In the classroom, students have the opportunity to choose over 50 different fi elds of undergraduate study at Manhattanville; outside of it, there are at least 50 extracurricular clubs and organizations available for students to discover and cultivate their passions.
