Winding To wind 230/12-0-12 volt, 500 ma transformer and test it.To design and wind No Volt Coil used in starter. To wind and insert the starting / running coils of a Single phase induction motor, for a

minimum of one pole.To wind and insert stator coils of a 3 phase induction motor (Single layer / Double

Layer), for a minimum of one pole.To give end connection for a 3 phase induction motor winding for a 2 pole / 4 pole

operations and run it. Measure the rotor speed, starting current and running current. To wind and insert the coils for ceiling fan motor (minimum 2 coils).

Electrical machines

Electrical machines are energy converters. If the machine input is mechanicalenergy and the output electrical energy then that machine is a generator,as shown in Fig. (a) .

Alternatively, if the machine input is electricalenergy and the output mechanical energy then the machine is a motor, asshown in Fig. (b)

An electrical machine may be used as a motor or a generator, although in

practice the machine will operate more effi ciently when operated in themode for which it was designed.

Simple a.c. generator or alternator

If a simple loop of wire is rotated between the poles of a permanent magnet, between thenorth and south poles. This fl ux cutting will induce an emf in the wire by Faraday’s law which states that when a conductor cuts or

is cut by a magnetic fi eld, an emf is induced in that conductor . If the generatedemf is collected by carbon brushes at the slip rings and displayedon the screen of a cathode ray oscilloscope, the waveform will be seen to

be approximately sinusoidal. Alternately changing, fi rst positive and thennegative, then positive again, giving an alternating output.as shown in below fig., the loop of wire will cut the lines of magnetic flux

Simple d.c. generator or dynamo

If the slip rings of Fig. are replaced by a single split ring, called a commutator, the generated emf will be seen to be in one direction, as shownin Fig below . The action of the commutator is to reverse the generated emf every half-cycle, rather like an automatic change-over switch. However, this simple

arrangement produces a very bumpy d.c. output. In a practicalmachine, the commutator would contain many segments and many windingsto produce a smoother d.c. output. Similar to the unidirectional batterysupply shown in below fig
