    2. Panzerdivisionthe earlyyears

    2. Panzerdivision was ormed in October 1935, making it oneo the oldest Panzer Divisions o the German Army. Te rstdivisional commander was no other than Heinz Guderian

himsel, who developed the theories o tank warare beorethe war.

Ater the Anschlusso Austria, the Division was transerredto Vienna and many Austrians joined it ranks, earning theDivision its nickname Wiener Panzer Division.

It took part in the Blitzkrieg campaigns in Poland in 1939,France in 1940, and the Balkans and Greece in 1941.

Ater the end o the Campaign in the Balkans, the trackedvehicles o the division were shipped to Italy, but both shipsstruck British mines and sunk. Te loss o all tanks delayedthe deployment o the Division in time or Operation

    Barbarossa.

In October 1941 the 2nd Panzer arrived in Russia andwas deployed as part o the Herresgruppe Mitte advanc-ing towards Moscow. When the oensive stalled, the meno2. Panzerdivision were only 16 km rom the city. TeDivision was pushed back rom the gates o Moscow by themassive Soviet counter-oensive in the Winter o 1941/42.In the next months the Division was embroiled in heavilyought deensive battles. Ater a short ret at Smolensk inthe Summer o 1942, the Division was deployed in thedeence o Rzhev.

During the battle o Kursk in 1943,2. Panzerdivision was parto Models 9th Army, orming the northern pincer. Ater theailure o the Kursk Oensive, the men o2. Panzerdivisiontried to hold the rontlines along the Dnieper River, sueringheavy casualties in the progress. In spring 1944 the Division

was withdrawn to France or retting.

norMandyWhen the Allies landed in Normandy2. Panzerdivisionwas at ull strength with two o its our inantry battalionsmounted in hal-tracks. Te division was deployed in thearea around Amiens, and only two days ater the invasion

the division was ordered to move towards Normandy. Teleading elements entered combat on 12 June. Te rst battleswere against the British 7 th Armoured Division near Villers-Bocage, orcing the Desert Rats to retreat. Te Wiener PanzerDivision remained in the Caumont area. During the Britishoperation Epsom the Panther battalion supported the orcesdeending against the British oensive and was credited withthe destruction o 53 enemy tanks.

Ater the Allies began Operation Cobra and broke-throughthe thin lines oPanzer Lehr Division and streamed south,Hitler ordered Operation Lttich, the ill ated attack towardsMortain and Avranches. During the night o 6 August 2.

Panzerdivision attacked and broke through the Americanlines only to be stopped by American reinorcements about3 km short o Avranches. 116. Panzerdivision on the rightanked started the attack too late to make any progress while

the SS Divisions to the south were stopped by the deter-mined resistance o the US 30th Inantry Division. By noon,7 August, the morning og had dispersed and the attackso Allied ghter-bombers made all urther German attacksimpossible.

In the next weeks the Allied orces closed the Falaise pocket, but 2. Panzerdivision escaped, withdrawing towards the

Westwall more or less intact. Although the Division sueredheavy casualties in the Normandy battles, in particular theloss o heavy weapons and tanks was high, the division wasar rom destroyed.

Deployed at the Westwall, the division supported the elimi-nation o the American bridgehead at Wallendor duringSeptember. Earmarked or the planned Ardennes Oensive,

    2. Panzerdivision was nally withdrawn in November toreceived new equipment and replacements in the Eiel area.

Te Panzer Regiment retained twoAbteilungen (battalions),one with Panther and the second with Panzer IV tanks. Buteach company was authorized to have only 14 tanks. Inaddition, the secondAbteilungreceived StuG III assault gunsor two o its companies in lieu o Panzer IV tanks. A urther21 StuG III were received by the Panzerjger Abteilung. However, hal-tracked vehicles were in short supply limitingthe mobility o much o the division to the roads.

the Battleofthe BUlgeFor the Ardennes Oensive 2. Panzerdivision was attached

to the XLVII. Panzer Korps commanded by Generalder Panzertruppe Freiherr von Lttwitz. In addition to2. Panzerdivision, the Korps consisted oPanzer Lehr Divisionand26. Volksgrenadierdivision.

As soon as the Volksgrenadiereo26. Volksgrenadierdivisionhad secured crossings over the Our and Cler Rivers,

    2. Panzerdivision was tasked to breakthrough the Americanlines, bypass Bastogne to the north and race towards theMeuse and capture the bridges there.

Only one day beore the start o the oensive OberstMeinradvon Lauchert took command o2. Panzerdivision, so he wasunable to meet all his commanders beore the start o the

    oensive.

In the pre-dawn hours o 16 December, Pioneers and a battal-ion o Panzergrenadiers crossed the Our river in rubber boatsin order to capture the village o Marnach. Tis was meantto clear the road rom Dasburg towards Cler and urthertowards Bastogne, but the soldiers o the US 28th InantryDivision entrenched there held the village stubbornly. Onlyin the evening, when Pioneers nished a 60-ton bridge,

were the divisions tanks able to cross the Our and join theght. Te deenders were then slowly pushed back. In themorning hours o 17 December an advance guard reachedthe town o Cler, less than two miles west o Marnach

and headquarters o the US 110th Inantry Regiment. Teadvance guard was stopped by Shermans o the 707th ankBattalion. Tey lost our Panzer IV tanks in the ght, butdestroyed three Shermans in return. Te deenders o Cler

On 18 December what was leto the 110th Inantry Regiment was orced to withdraw tothe west. However, the sti resistance o the 28th InantryDivision had played havoc with the German timetable.

Meanwhile, CCR, US 9th Armored Division established

two roadblocks east o Bastogne, the northern one nearthe village o Lullange, where the road rom Cler enteredthat leading to Bastogne. Te second roadblock was urthersouth near Allerborn. In the morning hours o 18 Decemberthe orward elements o Kampgruppe Bhm reached thenorthern roadblock. With the tanks o Panzer-Regiment 3close behind, the roadblock was soon surrounded and an-nihilated. Te southern roadblock was overrun shortly aterdusk.

Oberst von Lauchert now turned his Division to the north-west so as to swing past Bastogne in the north and maintainthe momentum o the westward drive.

All the delays allowed the American reinorcements to reachBastogne beore the Germans. One o these was eam Desobryrom CCB o the US 10th Armored Division which deployedat Noville. Te little village north o Bastogne was directlyin the way o2. Panzerdivision. Covered by the morning og,the tanks o2. Panzerdivision manoeuvred or an attack onthe village. When the og suddenly lited, more than thirtytanks were revealed to the deenders o Noville. Accuratere rom the American tanks and tank destroyers causedthe attack to ail. At midday the 1st Battalion o the 506thParachute Inantry Regiment, under Lieutenant Colonel

James L. LaPrade reached Noville and immediately coun-

terattacked. However, the paratroopers were unable to reachthe ridge lines due to the withering German re. Elements o

    304. Panzergrenadier Regiment inltrated toward the southo Noville. Treatened by the prospect o being surroundedand short o ammunition, the deenders o Noville nally

retreated towards Bastogne on the aternoon 20 December, but they held up the advance o2. Panzerdivision or nearlytwo days and caused heavy casualties.

the highwaterMarkShortly ater midnight Kampgruppe Bhm, which hadbypassed Noville to the north, captured a bridge over theOurthe River at Ortheuville. Tis opened the road to

Marche and Namur invitingly, but 2. Panzerdivision didnot move, as their tanks had run dry and they had to waitor uel. Tis allowed the advance elements o the US 84 th

Inantry Division to occupy Marche. When the advancenally resumed at nightall 22 December, sti resistance wasencountered at Marche. Lttwitz ordered Lauchert to turnthe bulk o his division west towards Dinant and the Meuse, and to leave only a blocking orce towards Marche.

KampgruppeBhm raced up the highway towards Dinant, ollowed by Kampgruppe Cochenhausen, nally reachingthe woods near Celles beore daylight on 24 December. Teadvance elements o the division were only 9 km away rom

the Meuse crossings. Te remainder o2. Panzerdivision wasstretched all the way back to south o Marche with the dualmission o continuing the westward advance and o protect-ing the northern ank.

Meanwhile, the American 2nd Armored Division beganto arrive northeast o Celles. Teir CCA moved southinto Buissonville, while the 24th Cavalry ReconnaissanceSquadron occupied Humain, blocking 2. Panzerdivisionroute o advance. Te leadingKampgruppen were cut o.

In the meantime KampgruppeBhm had reached the villageo Foy-Notre Dame were it encountered several tanks o

    the British 29

Armoured Brigade. Losing several vehiclesto British re and running out o uel, the reconnaissancebattalion went to ground.2. Panzerdivision was stopped lessthan 5 km short o the Meuse crossings.

Panzer Lehr divisionthe retreatfroM franceTe massive carpet-bombing at the start o Operation Cobrashattered the already weakened Panzer Lehr Division. Onlysmall pockets o resistance remained which were quickly

eliminated by the attacking American units. Te commandero the division, GeneralleutnantFritz Bayerlein was orced toretreat on oot.

While Hitler ordered Unternehmen (Operation) Lttich, thedoomed attack towards Mortain and Avranches, all combat-

worthy elements oPanzer Lehr Division where ormed intosmall Kampgruppen (ask Forces) which guarded the anksoUnternehmen Lttich.

Te remainder o the division was sent to the rear to receivereplacements and returning stragglers, enabling the orma-tion o another Kampgruppe. Finally on 18 August, the

division was sent to Laon, near Paris, or reconstitution, butthe arriving reinorcements and tanks where just enough tobring the division to roughly 25% strength o its inantryand about 20 tanks.

Te uprising in Paris triggered the dispatch o a smallKampgruppe towards Paris, but it was unable to enter theCity, and was surrounded by French resistance orces andhad to break out with heavy losses. Te rapid Allied advanceorced Panzer Lehr Division, no longer unctioning as adivision, to retreat across France towards the Westwall onthe German border.

Tere, Kampgruppe von Hauser played an admirable part

in halting the American 5th Armored Divisions penetrationo the Westwall at Wallendor, southwest o Bitburg. Testrained Allied logistic situation and the decision to ocuson Montgomerys Operation Market Garden, orced the

American orces to withdraw rom their little bridgehead. In October an order was received to redeploy to the trainingarea Sennelager or reconstitution. Te remaining tanks andheavy weapons were turned over to2. Panzerdivision.

reconstitUtionandpreparationsforthe ardennes offensivePanzer Lehr Division was to be reconstituted as a standardPanzer-Division 44. However, a lot o the equipmentrequired or this organisation was not available to thedivision at the time.

Panzergrenadier-Lehr-Regiment 901 had its sta and therst battalion mounted on armoured haltracks, the secondbattalion and Panzergrenadier-Lehr-Regiment 902 receivedtrucks, mainly Steyr 1500 troop-carriers.

    I. Abteilung/Panzer-Lehr Regiment 130had been attached toPanzer-Brigade 113, while I. Abteilung/Panzer-Regiment 6,

which had served the division in Normandy, returned to itsparent3. Panzerdivision, leavingPanzer Lehrwith only one

    mixed battalion o panzers.

Replacements arrived only slowly. rucks where in shortsupply and in November the division still had no tankdestroyers, the artillery regiment was lacking guns and

prime-movers, and the lack o uel and experienced NCOshampered training.

    lorraine

Panzer Lehr Division was earmarked or the plannedArdennes Oensive, but despite strict orders not to employthe division or any reason prior to the Ardennes Oensive, the November breakthrough o Pattons XII Corps in theLorraine orced the OKW (German high command) tomove Panzer Lehr to counter this threat to the vital Saarindustrial region.

At rst the German orces were successul and pushedelements o the American 106th Cavalry Group back, butcounterattacks by the 4th Armored Division orced PanzerLehr Division to all back and establish a deensive position.Te arrival o the Panzerjger Lehr Abteilung with 21 new

Panzerjger IV/70enabled the division to repulse all attackson 27 November.

Unexpectedly on 4 December orders arrived or the divisionto immediately load up on trains and head north, just 12days beore the start o Hitlers Ardennes Oensive.

the Battleofthe BUlgeFor the Ardennes Oensive Panzer Lehr Division was attachedtoXLVII Panzer Korps(47th Armoured Corps) which consist-ed o2. Panzerdivision and26. Volksgrenadierdivision. PanzerLehr Division was placed in Army Reserve and ordered to

stand by to support 26. Volksgrenadierdivision and to latertake Bastogne in acoup de main i possible.

    26. Volksgrenadierdivision was assigned with securing bridge-heads over the Our and Cler Rivers, and thus enabling the twoPanzer divisions to breakthrough towards Bastogne. However, the American 28th Inantry Division stubbornly deended itspositions, denying the Germans use o the vital roads leadingtowards Bastogne. Kampgruppe 901 was ordered towardsConsthum in order to help the Volksgrenadiers capture thevillage. By the morning o 18 December American resist-ance aded away, allowingKampgruppeFallois to resume theadvance, ollowed byKampgruppe902. Leading elements o

Kampgruppe 902 reached Nieder-Wampach at about 1900hours on 18 December. Tere Generalleutnant Bayerleindecided to continue on the shorter and more direct sideroad towards Bastogne instead o the paved, but longer mainroad, believing it easible or armour. But the tank trackschurned the road into a muddy quagmire and trucks andprime movers bogged down. It was only at 0200 hours on 19December that the main road at Magret was reached.

Here, a Belgian civilian told Bayerlein about an Americanarmoured orce o at least ty tanks, that had passedthrough Margret only two hours earlier. Concerned aboutsuch a strong enemy orce behind his lines, Bayerlein set up

a roadblock and waited or the bulk o his orces to close up.In act the enemy orce was only a small detachment romCombat Command B o the 10 th Armored Division. Whenthe advance was nally resumed, precious time had been lost.

At Nee, only 2 km east o Bastogne, the Panzergrenadiersclashed with the Paratroopers o the 101st Airborne Division,

which had just arrived. Te advance oPanzer Lehr Divisionwas stopped again and the race or Bastogne lost. Furthersouth, in Wardin the paratroopers were orced back in bitterhouse-to-house ghting, but KampgruppeFallois was too ex-hausted to advance urther towards Marvie. Te Americans

were able to established a strong deensive position.

Bayerlein urged an immediate attack on Bastogne withall divisions o XLVII Korps, but General von Manteueldeclined, believing that such a diversion o all corpss orces

would endanger the oensive thrust to the Meuse. All attackson the 20 December ailed and on 21 December the division

was ordered to leave Kampgruppe901 in position southeasto Bastogne and resume the westward advance past the southside o Bastogne.

In the ollowing days Kampgruppe 901 supported theattacks o26. Volksgrenadierdivision, but only small gains

were achieved. Parts o Marvie where captured in extremelyheavy ghting with the Germans holding the south and the

Americans holding the north o the village.

Casualties where high and when the 4th Armored Divisionlinked up with the deenders o Bastogne on 26 December, all notions o taking the town were gone.

Meanwhile, the main body o Panzer Lehr Division hadmoved out toward St. Hubert. Overcoming light oppositionthe division made at rst rapid progress, but on 22 Decemberuel shortages delayed the advance.

    9. Panzerdivision9. Panzerdivision was on raised on 3 January 1940 rom4. Leichte Division (4th Light Division). It then played amajor role in the 1940 campaign, advancing through TeNetherlands, Belgium and into France withArmeegruppe B.Te division travelled urther than any other Germandivision during the 1940 campaign. In April 1941 thedivision took part in the invasions o Yugoslavia and Greece. It then ought with Armeegruppe Sd(Army Group South)during Operation Barbarossa, the German invasion o theSoviet Union. It ought in the encirclement battles on theDniepr River bend around Kiev. In the summer o 1942the division took part in the drive or the Caucasus oileldsthat resulted in the Battle or Stalingrad. 9. Panzerdivisionavoided being caught in the Stalingrad encirclement by beingtranserred toArmeegruppe Mitte(Army Group Centre). In1943 it took part in the battle o Kursk, and ater the ailureo the oensive spent the rest o 1943 on deence. It was

withdrawn to France or rebuilding in May 1944 and byAugust it had been sent to Normandy to help halt the Alliedinvasion. Despite dwindling strength the division was keptin the line until September, by which time it had retreated to

Aachen in Germany. It was rebuilt once again, incorporating2105. Panzerabteilungand other units rom the 105. Panzer-Brigade, and was back in the line at Aachen in mid-October1944.

Te division initially wasnt going to be part o the Ardennesoensive o December 1944, instead it was earmarked totake part in an attack in the Venlo Region. However, as the

Ardennes oensive made slow progress 9. Panzerdivision

was transerred to the reserve o the Fiteenth Army on 18December. It was then moved to theXLVII Korpsto ollowbehind 2. Panzerdivision as it made its thrust towards theMeuse River. Lack o uel and the congested roads meantthat 9. Panzerdivision didnt catch up with the main body o

    2. Panzerdivision near Rocheort until 25 December. SomePanther tanks o33. Panzer-Regiment joined KampgruppeHoltmeyer (2. Panzerdivision) as they tried to relieveKampguppen Von Bhm and von Cochenhausen. Onceagain lack o uel, US artillery re and domination o thesky by American and British ghter-bombers halted therelieving attack. It was decided to withdraw rather then risk

the encirclement o the rest o2. Panzerdivision. Te rest o9. Panzerdivision meanwhile set about securing the northernank by taking Humain on 26 December. wo days laterthey were pushed out by Combat Command A o the US 2nd

    Armored Division.

Te division was reassigned to the LVIII Korps on 29December. Tey continued to ght in the line until 14

January 1945, retiring to the Eiel Region in Germany,

where the division distinguished itsel. It ought against theAllied bridgehead at Remagen in February, by which time itwas just a battalion-sized kampgruppe o 600 men and 15tanks. It was orced to retreat in March and was encircledand captured in the Ruhr Pocket in April 1945.
