A WORD FROM YOUR PASTOR… Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ, What does it mean to be a Eucharistic People? The word Eucharist comes from the word that means THANKSGIVING. A grateful person is one who engages others out of gratitude. God has given each of us certain abilities and talents, as well as inabilities, in order that we as individuals are able to recognize the need we have for others in our lives as well as the ability to share a part of ourselves with others. Jesus Christ shares his entire being with each and every person for the purpose that we may all become one in Him with His Father and the Holy Spirit. Jesus offers Himself to us in His completeness in a meal that is never lacking because He is all in all. Recall He said He is that water at the well that causes one to never thirst again, the one if eaten gives eternal life – you know, He is the one who causes His disciples to recognize a new reality when He says,” ‘Gather the fragments left over, so that nothing will be wasted.’ So, they collected them, and filled twelve wicker baskets with fragments from the five barley loaves that had been more than they could eat.” Nothing of His person will be wasted – nothing of the mystical Body will be taken for granted or wasted – He fulfills what has been perceived to be lost and incomplete. The twelve wicker baskets are symbolic of the completeness found in the twelve tribes of Israel that exists in the personages of the twelve disciples Jesus calls His Apostles – those who are sent out – with a mission for humanity to share the experience of Christ with all they encounter so that all may be one and nothing will be lost. Our human family is in dire need of knowing God. As a Eucharistic people we are at an advantage in knowing God through the sacramental nature that causes His presence to be known in a tangible way. The physical manifestation of the Eucharist allows us to know the invisible in the visible – to encounter the unseen in the seen. Let us also know that what is unseen in the seen in the Eucharist is now in each one of us at the reception of the Eucharist during Communion. Communion means we are all one in His Body – though perceived as many parts. Christ cannot be broken or divided – we become what we receive that no one will ever be lacking in the presence of the Lord. We become one because He is one in the Father and the Spirit. In gratitude, in the Eucharist, let us proclaim what we have received and become what we truly are because of Christ, one Body in the world enacting love upon the world. Pax Christi, Rev. John B. Gabage EVANGELIZATION CORNER SEVENTEENTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME Waste not, want not The earth is in danger of becoming our garbage can. It’s estimated that U.S. citizens throw out 90 percent of what we buy within the year. A lot of that is packaging, including the double packaging of cardboard and plastic around many products. Let’s clean up our act! Avoid buying over-packaged items, as well as things you don’t really need. Embrace recycling as an act of love for the planet and its people. Find new homes for books, clothing, furniture, kitchen items, and technology. Shrink your footprint, expand your heart. (Reprinted with permission from PrepareTheWord.com) TODAY'S READINGS: 2 Kings 4:42-44; Ephesians 4:1-6; John 6:1-15 (110) “Gather the fragments left over, so that nothing will be wasted.” PARISH AND FAMILY LIFE WE REMEMBER + WE CELEBRATE + WE BELIEVE CELEBRATING A BIRTHDAY SOON: Carol Downs (9-2), Laura Bennett (9-4), Jason Curtin (9-4), Jeff Daly (9-4), Angela Shreves (9- 4), Blair Carmean (9-5), Tony Sala (9-5), Charlie Alber (9-6), Kathryn Hays (9-6), Meg Atwell (9-7), Ashlei Dufour (9-7), Mark Spiering (9-7), Lynn Spinner (9-7), Lyn Sutton (9-7) We welcome to the parish James & Sarah Cutter and their daughter, Kaylen, of Greensboro. CHRISTIAN FORMATION Vacation Bible School 2018 was a huge success!! Thank you so much to Pam & Jill King for coordinating and carrying it out; to Kathleen Jewell for registration; to Jill’s amazing kitchen staff who prepared and cleaned up our wonderful dinners; to Paula Amalfitano and Terri Prete for the delicious snacks; to Deirdre Bildstein for coordinating games; to Carm Powell for the faith lesson station; to Connie Walton, Linda Haney, and Beth McCullough for caring for the little ones; and to Alyssa King and her team for the fun craft class. Thank you to all the many, many volunteers, adult and youth, too numerous to mention. You are all amazing!! We especially want to say a big big THANK YOU to all who took donation post-its and donated Wal-Mart cards, cash and materials. We could not have done it without your financial support. Thank you also to the Legion who provided us with funds. Last, but certainly not least, thank you to Fr. Gabage who supported and helped in many ways. MORE NEWS FROM AROUND THE DIOCESE & COMMUNITY The Cathedral of Saint Peter is in need of our help. The weekend of August 18 & 19, a special collection for the maintenance and preservation of the Cathedral of Saint Peter will be taken up in all parishes in our diocese. Please be as generous as you can. For more information about the Cathedral, please visit the Cathedral’s website at www.cathedralofstpeter.com. For a video tour of the Cathedral, and a tour of the Cathedral’s 100 year-old pipe organ, visit the diocesan website at www.cdow.org/cathedral. Together, we can help assure that our Cathedral will remain a place of beauty and prayer during our Diocese’s 150th anniversary year and for generations to come. The Diocese of Wilmington’s new website makes it easier to find a church or school and features news headlines from The Dialog, quick links, a video feature, and more. Check it out today at www.cdow.org. Before you head to the beach, check out the Vacation Mass Guide. The Diocese of Wilmington is blessed to have some of the best, most beautiful places for family vacations within its borders. Find family fun at one of the exciting Delaware or Maryland Atlantic beach resort areas, or relax with a trip to one of the historic and quaint Chesapeake Bay communities on the Maryland Eastern Shore. Wherever you go, you can find a warm, welcoming Catholic parish. For Mass times check out the Vacation Mass Guide at www.cdow.org/VMG. Order your Sesquicentennial Custom Rosary before they are gone. A custom-designed, limited-edition, dark red and gold rosary is now available to commemorate the 150th anniversary of the Catholic Diocese of Wilmington. The rosaries, made in Italy by the Ghirelli Company, were blessed at the Vatican by Pope Francis on June 6, 2018 during His Holiness’ Weekly Audience in Saint Peter’s Square. The Official Custom Rosary of the Diocese of Wilmington’s 150th Anniversary features a crucifix that is designed after the beautiful crucifix in the Cathedral of Saint Peter in Wilmington. The back of the crucifix is engraved with the words, “Catholic Diocese of Wilmington 150th Anniversary 1868-2018.” The front of the rosary’s centerpiece holds an image of the Blessed Mother from the famous Charles Parks Our Lady of Queen of Peace statue located on the grounds of Holy Spirit Church in New Castle, Delaware. On the centerpiece’s reverse, is an image of Saint Francis de Sales, the Patron Saint of the Diocese of Wilmington. In place of the traditional “Our Father” beads, the rosary has a medal crest of the Diocese of Wilmington, with a map of Delaware and Maryland’s Eastern Shore on the back, indicating the twelve counties that comprise the Diocese. All beads are 8 mm dark red Bohemian glass, while the chain and custom features are made of antique gold finish medal. The rosary comes in a commemorative color pouch, and is available for a suggested $30.00 donation each, plus shipping and handling. Detailed photographs of the rosary, and an order form are available online at www.cdow.org/150th. 12TH ANNUAL NUN RUN The Little Sisters of the Poor invite you to run or walk the 12th Annual Nun Run 5k. Are you already separated? Looking for a better way? Retrouvaille (retro-VIE) can help and offers hope for a better relationship. Retrouvaille is a peer ministry of volunteer couples that can help you learn the tools of healthy communication, build intimacy and heal, just as they have done in their own marriages.
