This codebook should be read in conjunction with the appended interviewerinstructions.

The work histories record all events ahr the res ndent Iefi full-time education, rincluding periods of unemployment, periods as a ousewife etc.

Each event is allocated a twodigit code, runnin in sequence, and each event is1allocated one record. Therefore individuals’ wor histories vary as the number of

records allocated matches the number of events reported. Codes are given belowfor one record. These codes are repeated for the other records. Events lasting lessthan one month were not recorded. Records start at record 101.

Record 150 contains information on whether each event involved a change ofemployer or not. The r=”ord begins w]th. the case id and record id occupyingcolumns 1 -8. The interview date occupies columns 9- 12. Day occupies columns9- 10 and month occupies columns 11- 12. 431 digit codes then follow 1 =change of employer, 2 = no change (e.g. promotion, extended sick-leave, eti).Non-employment events (e.g. housewife, student, unemployment) are also coded 2.Therefore if a person takes maternity leave and then returns to the sameemployer, this is coded 22. The first employment event is coded as 1. However, ifthe history starts with a period of unemployment, this event is coded 2. These 43variables are named Changel b Change43..

Class and occupational variables derived from the Prandy occupational codes arerecorded on columns 48 to 80 for each record of an employment event.

Class and occu ational variables derived from the prandy codes in the main?questionnaire or parents’ and partners’ occupations are recorded on cards 55 and

56 in the same sequence as used in the Respondents’ work histories. Variables forFathers’ occupations occupy columns 9- 41 and are prefixed with an F instead ofR. Variables for Mothers occupations occupy columns 48-80 and are prefixedwith an M instead of R. Variables for Partners’ occupations occupy columns 9-41and are prefixed with P instead of R.

Respondents Work History Update

.

The data for the Respondents Work History update is organised in the same way as that forthe original Work History. The first event recorded the last event recorded on the 1986survey with the same event number and the event numbers carry on in sequence fmrn thisevent number. The variables are prefixed U instead of R. Two derived variables have notbeen recorded, employment status (REMPST1) and the 2 digit 0UG80 code (ROUG2D1).However, the column locations for other variables are the same. Since the record number isdefined by the event number, the start of the Respondents’ updated Workhistiry occurs ondifferent records. This means that this data may require programming. It cannot be readdirectly from the template given in SCELIHCS.SPS

Partners’ Work History

The Partners’ work history is recorded on cards 501 to 528.

It is organised in the same way as the respondents work histiry. However sections ~ to Xhave been dropped. Variables are prefixed with P ins~ad of R or U. Variables fromsections Q to X which have been drop d are RPAY 1 to RYLEF”l’1. In addition RPBPRV 1,

rsection X, (whether the business is pu lic or private) has been dropped. Column locationsfor the remaining variables are the same as in the original work histories. As in theRespondents’ Updates, the derived variables for employment status and 2digit 0UG80 havebeen dropped.

Childrens’ Work History

The childrens’ work histories occupy cards 590 to 599. Only the child’s current or last job isrecorded. If the child is unemployed or non-employed, the revious job is recorded. Eventsare recorded for each child in the sequence

1?E“ven by their c ild numbers (i.e. the eldest is 1

etc.) Derived variables are as in the other CS work histories.

As this data is differently organ&d that the other work histmies it is described in detailbelow. .
