COVER NOTE,

What a Blank Holiday our first May Day at home turned out to be.' With the shops closed and most Deddington folk with their feet up in front of the fire - in common with the rest of the country it must be said - the only happening was Mr. and Mrs. Mare's Open House in aid of the Red Cross and held in memory of Cora Collin. Music from the lone loudspeaker van played to an almost deserted and windswept Market Place and the Cotswold Country Dancers shivered visibly.

There had been talk of Maypole Dancing, Dwyle Flunking and pub extensions like Jubilee Day last year, but these things don't just happen on their own. They need people to work at them - which brings us to the subject of our cover picture. The Town Hall is to get a facelift with paint paid for by our Jubilee Fund, and Betty Hill is getting together a team to do the work over the course of the summer, after the roof has been mended..

Some of the volunteers turned out on a murky Sunday morning for the camera; left to right, back - Dick Prince, Ted Robinson (standing in for Bill Drake), Jonathan Hughes-Jones and Philip Allen. Front - Melanie Hughes-Jones, Maggie Rampley and Betty Hill. But out of the 500 or so able-bodied men In Deddington and, since we live In emancipated times, from a similar number of women, we should be able to raise more helpers. e have a lovely Market Place, and with the Town Hall smartened up it will look even more attractive to residents and visitors alike. The Chamber of 'Trade and our shopkeepers are already aware of the growing value to Deddington of the tourist trade and it must surely be in their interests alone to make the Market Place an inviting place to stop.

DESDINGTON TOjJN FO£TBALL CLUB Super,. Deddington

On April 24th Deddington went to Banbury Stadium to play Bodicote Sports in the final of the Coronation Gup. This was an exciting hard game with both teams playing first class football. Bodicote were first to score, but not disheartened, Deddington players hit back and eventually won 3-1. Scorers were '-!. Garrett 2, M. Stephenson 1 . Deddington last won this trophy 12 years ago and it Is one of the most coveted trophies in this district. Champagne flowed in the dressing-room and afterwards a.celebration was held at the Red Lion where the Deddington team were In fine voice. How proud we were to" bring this Gup home with Deddington colours flowing from the handles.

Guardian Gup: We played Tysoe in the semi-final and after a hard match went on to win 2-1 with the final later in May against Ruscote Sports.

Benevolent Gup: Another hard semi-final against Ruscote Sports ended with Deddington winning by the only goal and so going through to play Tysoe in the final, again later in May.

League News •• Ve were beaten for only the second time this season In the league when we lost at Tysoe 3-1. Tysoe also beat Bodicote Sports last weekend 2-0 and therefore Deddington needs 5 points from the remaining 4 games to make history and to bring the Premier Division title and Gup home to Deddington for the first time.

Our thanks to everybody who turns up in all weather to support us and especially to two senior citizen ladies who turned out in the cold to watch us in the Coronation Cup Final and I hope they were as proud of us as we were of them. That's all for this month and I hope next month's report will be as good - if not better. ;

Injuries: We are glad Pete Coleman is back to full fitness. We wish John Keys a quick recovery after badly bruising his arm in the Coronation Gup Final.

HEM?T0_N NgWS The Youth Club continues each Tuesday evening, with meetings usually centred on the Church Room. we have also explored the village and played rounders at Deddington,

Thursday Club - our Mother and Toddler Club - has changed its form into that of a coffee morning group, meeting in people's houses. (As so many of our big "toddlers" have toddled to school, we found the afternoons too short for a relaxed gathering.)

Two unfortunate ladles became "statistics" (see your February "News", p.15) when they had to be taken to hospital after their car collided with a lorry passing through the 'Gap' in the opposite direction. As the Spring engenders a quickening spirit, it's exciting to watch the antics of the passing traffic, "30" and "Road Narrows" notwithstanding, especially as the holiday season approaches, but would-be spectators are advised to stand well back so as not to become toe involved in the action.

NOTES ON THE PARISH COUNCIL MEETING. 26 April 1^8

Street_ Lij£hts_j _pn_ Jill. night_or__not? If the Parish Council switches over to photocell lamps in Its street lights, the cost of the electricity supply will, rise by 40>%. Maintenance charges will also be higher, the Council was told, but installation costs would be lower. A letter was read out from Mrs. Diana Hindley, saying that an all night light outside her bedroom would make sleep very difficult. Mr. Welford confirmed that residents ' feelings would be considered when the Council looks in detail at the costs,

A local representative can be appointed to check time switches in the Council's lighting columns, but not in the Elect&city Board's distribution poles. To sort out who owns what, and to discuss the whofe lighting scene in Deddington the Clerk is to arrange a meeting between the Council and the S.E.B, in June.

ph±pj3ing_ NorjL_ojijrheaj e •The Theatre is keen to repeat last year's successful summer holiday playscheme. This gives Deddington, Clifton and Hempton children between the ages of 5 and 11 an opportunity to take part in play-writing, acting and mime, and to experience theatre with professionals. Last year over 200 children attended the Windmill School in the first week of the long summer holidays. The organisers need a grant of £M-5 to enable them to stage the scheme, 20p per session being charged to the children taking part. Monica Sansome said she had been asked by the Primary School PTA to say that they were happy to bear most of the cost, but as their limited funds are heavily committed to the school swimming pool, and as the scheme will benefit all village dildren irrespective of where they go to school, they were hoping for support from the Parish Council. Councillors agreed to contribute £10 to the venture, the same as last year.

Health Centre Transport

In Its report on last Year's transport scheme, the Oxfordshire Health Authority has thanked the Parish Council for its contribution towards the cost and asked for its continuing support. Although Deddington residents do not use the transport as we are lucky enough to have the Health Centre on our doorstep,Hempton and Clifton residents do make some use of the service. Deddington is by far the largest village in the practice, and as the cost is shared according to population, Councillors agreed that they have a responsibility to ensure that the service continues. The Council's £38.50 contribution for this year was approved.

Cj rpnation_ Cup_: Deddington Town Football Club were congratulated by the Council on winning the Coronation Cup recently.

^ j ^ j . mtm flfflffiG* ~' ~ | will be held on Wednesday ZM- May at 6,30 p.m., followed I by the Annual Parish Council meeting. We have kept you j up to date with Council activities over the last year - I this is your chance to put questions to Councillors on j any aspect of Parish Council business. j

CHURCH NEWS,

Captain John Cryer, MVO, MA, R » ^ e were all very shocked to learn of the sudden death of John Cryer recently, for he was well known to us all and only recently left Deddington to be near his children. Captain Cryer entered into the life of his new community so fully that he is mourned and missed by a great number of people and the Church was packed for the funeral service. As none of us was able to be present at this, I was sure that we would wish to remember him ourselves, and the only day suitable is 14th May at the service at 10.30 a.m.

Ascension Day: That evening was the time of the thunder storm and the torrential rain; even so quite a good number came to the service in the evening together with a coach load of visitors from Knowle, who were entertained afterwards to refreshments. The Vicar of Knowle writes:- "Thank you and your people for the kind and gracious way you welcomed us to your Church and made this Ascension Day service such a memorable occasion for us".

Christian Aid Week: This is from M°nday the 15th May to the following Saturday. You will see posters about this week on the notice board in the porch. It is so easy when there is a disaster to gain public sympathy and support, and Christian Aid certainly is the first with help in a disaster area, but so much more is done besides. In particular Christian Aid helps with the provision of knowledge of the best ways of growing crops, the digging of wells and of preventative medicine, indeed all things we take for granted. I am sure you will be generous when the collector calls.

Bishop of Oxford 's Whitsun Appeal 2 The children of our School, in response to this appeal are holding a 'Bring a book - buy a book' sale in the school on Thursday the 18th May, which will be run during the afternoon. The children bring a book in good condition and buy one which someone else has brought. Would you help? Please look through your books and bring them to Church to the table in the conference corner and I will see that they are taken to the sale at the school.

Garden Party: The Mothers' Union are holding a Garden Party at the Holly Tree Club on Thursday the 25th May at 2.30 and the children of our school are to give a demonstration of Country Dancing. ;

V-dAT PRICE TO CLIFTON?

Some Midland Red bus drivers don't seem to know what fare to charge for the l-j mile journey from Deddington to Clifton, and when the fares have been questioned they have become abusive and aggressive. This is the experience of a Deddington resident who asked Roger Gardner to bring her complaint to the attention of the Parish Council at last month's meeting.

Because she has had so many arguments with drivers over the course of the last year - and has even been threatened with being turned off - the woman is reluctant to have her name published. The situation has now got so bad that she will walk to work, accompanied in school holidays by her small daughter, rather than use the bus.

Midland Red have confirmed that the correct off-peak return fare is 21p for an adult and 1%> for a child, out they are unable to tissue a card certifying this. Fares up to 28p and l8p have regularly been charged by some drivers. Anyone asked to pay more than the correct fare in future is requested to contact the Midland Red Manager, Mr. Evans, on Banbury 53^51? giving details, so that disciplinary action can be taken.

Dear Editor, With reference to my recent letter containing a quotation taken from the Annual Report of the Oxfordshire Field Footpath Society, I have been asked by a farmer residing to the North of the town to point out that the footpath in question is in fact to the South of DeddingtonE -

The words, "North of the area", referred of course to the area covered by. the Society, that is the whole of Oxfordshire. A number of people have the mistaken impression that this phrase meant to the North of Deddington. I regret any mis-understanding that may have been caused.

Yours sincerely, Mrs. F. M, Pratley

Dear Editor, Three resounding Cheers.' The Parish is on the way to becoming famous for longevity, and we have a poem in the Deddington News to prove It.' According to my calculations, without a calculator, "well past seven score and ten years" takes Mr. Victor J. P. Bowerman towards the 160 mark.' Well on the way. in fact, to catching up with the oldest known man in the world. A Russian who lived to the ripe old age of 168.'

Must be something in the air at Clifton. Or perhaps it was the beautiful soft water coming out of the spring in the grounds of the old "Up Pe Tups" Mill. Softer than rain water it was and the supply never ran dry. The stuff we impressed: on visitors as "best water" not to be used for the ordinary mundane jobs of cleaning, but to be kept for drinking, making tea. <e hadn't gone barmy on coffee in those days, and cooking, since I had to trail down - and back up "our little steep hill" every day with two buckets to keep our five gallon tank full.

Pity, in a way, that those old days are no more, for children, ragged or not, always managed to find their own amusement without vandalising everything. Simple perhaps, but, they were never, never bored.

Yours faithfully, Lewis Foreman - ... Well past the three_ score and ten

I am indebted to Mr. Foreman for pointing out the error of my ways, and I ? give my apologies to Mr. Bowerman. It is nice- to know that Mr. Foreman, at his grand age, is happy to act as our honorary watchdog.

Very many" tbanks to'all the hard"workers, generous givers and everyone who turned out on such a cold day on May Day. We raised £85. We do not know yet the result of the collection for the whole week until the collectors ' tins:have been emptied and counted in Banbury after the end of the week.

The Red Gross runs a Beauty Gare and Therapy service, sending out 80 volunteers to 31 hospitals throughout Oxfordshire. All types of hospitals are covered, both psychiatric and general, as well as Old People's and Cheshire Homes. The volunteers help patients make the most of their appearance, perhaps when the incentive has gone in a long hospital stay, with mental illness, or following a bad accident.

So they get through a lot of make-up and are constantly in need of more.' If you have any unwanted Christmas presents or bad buys, which the Red Cross could put to good use, we would be happy to collect them. Any cosmetics which come into contact with skin must, be unused, but scent and perfume, talcum powder and nail varnish are welcome second-hand, .lease have a look through cupboards and drawers, and if there is anything you would like to get rid of, contact Mary Robinson, Quinque House, New Street, (phone 272) or Jill Cheeseman, 35 The Daedings (phone 609).

DEDDINGTON_ LADIES,

The first week in May was a hectic time for the staff of the Banbury Guardian - with the May day holiday and visit to Banbury of the Duke of Gloucester there was a last minute deadline for the paper's completion. . This meant that the Editor was unable to speak to us as planned. However, Deputy Editor Mrs. Sue Roberts proved to be a charming and capable substitute. We were given a most interesting account of the variety of work and problems involved in the production of a local paper. This was followed by a lively question time.'

During the second week in May some of our members are looking forward to a visit to Radio Oxford. Our June 7th meeting takes the form of a visit by coach to the Potato Pub at Sturdy's Castle, leaving the Market Place at 7 p.m. Seats at 50p each have been booked quite quickly but If you are :

interested members or non-members please contact Jackie Stammers on Deddington 8198. There may be one or two places left.

On July 5th, 8 p.m., we return to our usual venue - the Holly Tree Club. The speaker will; be the local Health Visitor.

Maggie Rampley, Secretary

IN BRIEF:

The Parish Council has given the W.I. permission to hold three market stalls in the Market Place on Saturday 24 June.

CORRESPONDENCE

Dear Editor, Chris Isaacs and Andrew Macgregor make out a very good case for the Windmill complex as a Community centre, but, as is often the case, the sting is in the last two sentences of their letter. Is it too big? Do we want it? Let's face it. If a majority of the residents of the Parish of Deddington had really wanted a village hall, they could have had one-years ago, at a fraction of what such places would cost today. Indeed, when we first came to these parts, the thing was in the bag. Well - almost. A site had been given next to the Co-op Stores, and a posh framed plan of the Hall and its adjoining caretaker's cottage was exhibited in what was then Miss Weaver's front garden. Then suddenly, everything fell through. The site was sold and that was that, apart from spasmodic individual attempts at Community relations until the Deddington Society re-opened the matter two years or so ago.

They too, like previous enthusiasts, forgot one very vital factor. It is not sufficient to acquire a centre. There must also be some guarantee that it will be regularly and substantially patronised, both by organisations and the public, if it is not to become a burden instead of a blessing.

So, before we have a Village Hall and no customers, as experienced by other Parishes, supposing we put first things first and find out, by a detailed and informative referendum, whether the desire Is really there. Always remembering, of course, that a technical majority of one is not a practical majority at all.' Any more than a 40^ poll can be said to represent the "voice of the people".

Yours faithfully, Lewis Foreman

The girls' Netball Team took part in a rally at Banbury on Saturday 22 April. Their first match was against St. Joseph's A team. Our team played well, but after a nervous start, they were beaten 9~0 by a more experienced side. The St. Joseph's team went on to win the event.

However, this loss did not deter them, and they were not going to be beaten a second time. They played Neithrop B team and won 7-0. In their third match they really excelled themselves, against Queensway, by beating them 12-0. The girls thoroughly enjoyed the games and looked very smart in their new white shirts and navy shorts, provided by the PTA. Their behaviour and sporting conduct were a credit to the School - Well done girls.'

The team was: Shooter - Sharon Wragg, Goal Attack - Sonya Flippance, Wing Attack - Ruth Drake, Centre - Rachel Smith, Wing Defence - Catherine Coleman, Goal Defence - Lisa, Hancock, Goal Keeper - Claire Floyd, Reserve - Rosemary Preedy.

PORRESPOTOENCE

During 1962 I met Mrs. Collin in the street and she said she had been talking to Mr. Bliss who lived by Goose Green. He had asked her If she could start an Old People's Club in the beautiful room and garden which at that time was happily used by young people. She said she would certainly do so, a committee was arranged and the Club started.

During the first years other clubs were Invited, our club visited them on Wednesdays, and there were Christmas parties and outings. The Holly Tree Club was named after the Holly Tree near it. When the W.I. had. their Jubilee, a lovely garden seat was given to the Club. Mr. Bliss' daughter and. her husband are now members.

Our grateful thanks to Mrs. Collin, who was President, for all she has done. Her memory will always be there.

Apart from one tent collapsing in the night, burnt porridge and being permanently soaked, they all enjoyed it.' However the Guides can have the last laugh as it's the turn of the Guiders to camp this week-end.'

Our medecine bottle collection is almost complete - so far we have returned about 600 bottles to the Health Centre. We chose an evening of torrential rain (again.') to do our main collection.' But we all enjoyed working together and the Guides kept cheerful and smiling through the wet.'

Frantic preparations are now under-way to complete patrol projects to be sent in prior to our annual Division competition. The projects involve knot-work and various crafts.

All being well our six patrols will have a marvellous day out on June 10th at Rousham Park where they will compete with 60 - 70 other patrols in a nature competition and a rounders match. The project work will also be taken into account on that day. We are also busy working in two groups on accident prevention, and first aid and emergency helper badges.

On Tuesday l6th May from 6.30 p.m. onwards, we will be holding a Book Mark book party. This will be a joint venture with the Brownies and the money will go towards funds. Refreshments will be available - we look forward to seeing you there.'

Victory was decided -by a conversion test - from inches to centimetres of the vital statistics of a male team member. Deddington lost by a couple; of centimetres.' Middle Barton PTA were very amiable hosts and provided us with coffee and other refreshments after the Quiz.

The Coach, trip to London on Saturday,.15 April, went off almost hitchlessly. We had a beautifully bright, though chilly, day, so that the drive into and out of London was a real pleasure. Mostly, families spent the day in and out of the different South Kensington museums, and a few took their picnics Into Hyde- Park for a break out"of doors. I went with my family to the Commonwealth Institute, where, apart from the permanent displays, we saw, the current special exhibition 'The Artful Butterfly', which was a delight.
