Here are a few tips to provide customers carefree driving and safe travel. Check tire pressure monthly and before big trips - Properly inflate all four tires, plus the spare, to the vehicle manufacturer's recommended levels. Tires can lose up to one pound per square inch (psi) each month under normal conditions. Use an accurate tire gauge to check tire air pressure monthly and always when the tires are cool—meaning the car has been driven less than one mile or has not moved in at least three hours. Check tire tread - Tires should have at least 1/16 inch of tread depth. To perform the "penny test," insert a penny in the tread at several points on the tire, with President Lincoln's head pointed down. If you can see the top of Lincoln's head at any of the points, the tire is worn out and requires replacement. Get a complete vehicle inspection - An annual vehicle inspection, including the air-conditioning system, may help drivers avoid costly repairs and keep cool on hot summer days. A technician can ensure a vehicle's engine, battery, exhaust system and cooling system are all in good working order. Check fluids - Fluid levels should be checked and filled if necessary, including engine oil and coolant, brake, transmission, windshield washer and power steering fluids. Don't forget to check the gas! Do not overload the vehicle - Just as lighter loads increase fuel efficiency, overloading creates excessive heat inside your tires, can rob fuel economy and can cause excessive or irregular wear or early removal if tires are not properly inflated or in good condition. Pack an emergency kit - Emergency kits will prepare drivers for any unexpected breakdowns. Suggested items for a vehicle emergency kit include jumper cables, flashlight and batteries, reflector, protective gloves, basic toolkit, flares and matches, gallon of water, nonperishable food, 12- volt portable air compressor and blanket. An auto club membership and card may also be helpful. Also, make sure your cell phone is charged. Avoid potholes - In many areas of the country, the snow and ice of winter can leave roads in bad shape. Hitting a pothole can damage your tire and/or the wheel of your vehicle. Drivers should be reminded that keeping their tires properly inflated will help reduce damage from potholes and other road hazards. Drivers should try to avoid potholes entirely, but a good tip to give if drivers do have to hit a pothole is not to brake during impact. Instead, they should try to apply brakes before hitting and release brakes prior to impact. Braking during the impact sets up the tire and wheel assembly for a "solid hit" against the edge of the hole. Less severe damage may occur when a tire is rolling, rather than skidding, over a hole. Select proper tires - Rainwater that mixes with oil or grime on the streets can cause slippery conditions that may result in unexpected skidding. Consumers should be reminded that certain tires will deliver the traction or handling that they seek. Following these few easy tips, drivers will be better prepared and more confident each time they pull out of the driveway.
