Step 1Finding an expert Installer is essential, ideally one Marshalls recommend.

Remember you will rely on their advice, expertise and craftsmanship, so

plan early. Good Installers are in demand and will need some notice.

Step 2Talk through your needs and expectations with several Installers. They

will be able to recommend creative and practical driveway solutions and

through this discussion you will judge whether they can meet your brief.

Step 3Today, a driveway can be a complex undertaking with drainage

implications under current planning legislation. Permeable paving

solutions or soakaways and run-off areas may need to be designed. All

Marshalls Register members can advise you on a variety of solutions.

Step 4Get more than one quotation and in writing, make sure they quote like for

like. The cheapest may not be the best. Choose the contractor who you

feel will deliver what you need. Ask to view local examples of their work,

even talk to their former customers.

Step 5Using a Marshalls Register member you can be sure to receive a quote

in writing, an estimated start date and a reasonable estimate of the time

required to complete. Never accept a verbal estimate, a written contract is

essential and be very wary if they say they can start tomorrow.

Step 6Marshalls Installers want you to be fully satisfied with their work and will

not expect full payment until completed to your satisfaction.

Remember a driveway is not a project one should undertake without experience, so you must seek the best expert advice. Do this, and

Option OneDirect rainwater to a flower bed or another area of the garden which has been designed to allow water to drain away. NO PLANNING PERMISSION REQUIRED.

This option may involve using linear drainage or a driveway channel. It may also involve your installer putting a soakaway underneath part of your lawn.

Option TwoUse permeable paving which allows rainwater to drain through your driveway into the ground below. NO PLANNING PERMISSION REQUIRED.

Your installer will prepare the driveway sub-base*, which allows water to travel down between the blocks into the ground.

Option ThreeDo not make any provision for the rainwater that falls on your driveway. PLANNING PERMISSION IS REQUIRED.

This is the least sustainable option and may contribute towards a build up of rainwater on your property during times of heavy rain. However, if you choose to go down this route and your Local Authority grants you Planning Permission you can use any Marshalls impermeable concrete block paving.

Everyday decisions such as creating vehicle parking areas on our properties can have environmental consequences. In times of heavy or sustained rainfall the drainage system can become overloaded and cause catastrophic flooding. Because of this and changes to Government legislation, it is becoming increasingly important to focus on well balanced, sustainable

driveway design. Achieving a well balanced driveway design within the guidelines of the legislation need not be complicated.

You simply need to decide how you would like to manage the rainwater that lands on your driveway. Choose your preferred Marshalls

product and a reputable installer for the perfect driveway solution. Here are three options you might choose to manage the rainwater that

lands on your driveway, along with some product ideas for each option.

Marshalls GrassguardAn innovative, sustainable alternative to traditional concrete block paving. Marshalls Grassguard

has an open grid pattern that allows grass to grow through the blocks giving a green option

for driveways and hardstanding areas in front gardens. Grass can be cut and maintained as a

conventional lawn hiding the concrete. Ideal for that 2nd car parking space it doubles as a lawn

when not in use. The grid pattern enables water to drain through the grass into the ground rather

than into drains. Root growth binds the slabs and the base materials together progressively

improving their load carrying capability and providing the structure with its strength.

Marshalls Bioverse Paving SystemThe Bioverse Paving System is a sustainable driveway system, which minimises your

driveways carbon footprint and maximises carbon absorption. The system can become carbon

neutral over its lifetime when an optimised grass seed is used. Each pack of Bioverse modules

contains an equal quantity of two different designs. The interlocking modules can be laid in either

half bond or stack bond patterns to ensure structural stability and a unique look.
