Welcoming messageOn behalf of the Organizing Committee of the 2019 Photonics North Conference, we welcome you to this year’s event in beautiful Quebec City. Since the turn of the century, Quebec City has evolved into an innovative hub in the field of photonics thanks to major research centres and an energetic cluster of over one hundred companies. Together they provide employment to nearly 6000 people. We truly hope that you will take advantage of Photonics North’s networking opportunities to get better acquainted with the rich variety of expertise and world-class research that can be found in our region.

The conference aims at closing the gap between theory and applications and strives to move university research closer to industrial priorities. We are pleased to have on hand leading researchers to share the outcome of their work as well as exhibitors from industry to present the products and services that confirm Canada’s leadership on world markets.

We are also delighted to be joined by students who have wisely chosen photonics as their career path. We invite them to seize the opportunity to develop valuable linkages with the Canadian photonics community while at the conference.

We are privileged to welcome Professor Donna Strickland to this year’s edition of Photonics North. Over the years, she has been a loyal participant and a true contributor to this conference. It will indeed be a great honour to welcome her back now as a Nobel Prize laureate. We are sure that you are very much looking forward to her keynote address.

Finally, we wish to convey our gratitude to José Azaña and Ebrahim Karimi who have yet again done an outstanding job with the program as Scientific Co-Chairs. Thank you also to the Support Committee and Organizing Partners who have made Photonics North 2019 possible.

Parking There are many underground parking spaces close to the Centre. More specifically, Marie-Guyart complex, Place Québec, Delta Hotel and finally in the Place D’Youville parking lot all linked by underground connections. These lots operate 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

The Centre for Optics, Photonics and Lasers (COPL) is pleased to invite Photonics North participants to a special session marking their 30th anniversary. COPL researchers Younès Messaddeq (photonic materials), François Légaré (ultrafast laser science), Denis Seletskiy (non-linear photonics), Daniel Côté (biophotonics) and José Azaña (optical communications) will be presenting talks showcasing the exceptional quality of research and training offered by the strategic cluster. Why is the TPX3Cam state-of-the-art and unique from Amsterdam Scientific Instruments?

Amsterdam Scientific Instruments (ASI) based in Amsterdam, The Netherlands, manufactures and markets Hybrid Pixel Single Photon Counting detectors. The Timepix and Medipix ASICS derives from CERN. TPX3Cam based on the Timepix technology, is the fastest time-resolved optical pixilated camera in the world with a pixel size of 55 × 55 µm2, and acts independently as a fast digitizer that can be used to record timing information. The TPX3Cam is optically sensitive in a wavelength range of 400 to 1000 nm with high quantum efficiency. It can provide arrival time in Time-of-Flight (ToF) mode information and charge deposit information in Time-over-Threshold (ToT) mode together with the coordinates of the illuminated pixel. The TPX3Cam employs a SPIDR read out board. This readout board provides high speed interfaces including 1 Gb Ethernet and 10 Gb Ethernet. The latter allows the TPX3Cam readout at the maximum bandwidth of 80 Mhits/s with a time resolution of 1.56 ns. The TPX3Cam can be used to register single electron/ion/neutron and record images as well as timing information. Based on the unique features, the TPX3Cam has high flexibility and excellent performance in various applications. For instance, it can be easily used in both velocity map Imaging (VMI) and coincidence momentum imaging (CMI) for studying fragmentation dynamics. It is mounted outside the vacuum chamber compared to the delay-line or cross-strip detector. The TPX3Cam is a camera to be applied in quantum optics and fluorescence microscopy with the capability of single photon counting imaging.
