What you should learn? (p.58) Countries around the world have become more and more close

ly related.

On the one hand, the political activities in a certain region ( 地區 ) not only have an influence on the region itself, but also on other regions.

On the other hand, politics in the local region has also become more influenced by the global political environment ( 全球政治環境 ).

Due to this political globalization, numerous ( 眾多的 ) international intergovernmental organisations have emerged.

The increasing influence of international intergovernmental organisations (p.58) The function of international intergovernmental organisations is to provide count

ries with a political platform ( 政治平台 ), which enables them to take part in polit

ical policy-making ( 政策制定 ) through discussion and negotiation ( 談判 ).

As countries around the world have more contacts economically, culturally and

politically, every country wants to influence the policies of other countries or pro

tect their own interests by becoming a member of an international intergovernm

ental organisation.

This gives rise to the founding of more international intergovernmental organisa

tions. It also strengthens their influence.

Task 3International intergovernmental organisations in the event of bird flu ( 禽流感 ) Q1. From the global political perspective, suggest ways to prevent infe

ctious diseases ( 傳染性疾病 ) from spreading ( 擴散 ) worldwide.

The World Health Organization can distribute ( 分發 ) information

about infectious diseases and preventive measures ( 預防措施 ).

Countries can jointly ( 共同地 ) set up a system to report the local

spread of the diseases, establish ( 建立 ) viral ( 病毒 ) and medical

( 醫藥的 ) research and development centres, and formulate polici

es ( 制定政策 ) to control travel in the event of a disease outbreak

( 爆發 ).

3. What contributions did the international intergovernmental organisations make in preventing the spread of infectious diseases? Illustrate with examples.

The World Bank subsidises ( 資助 ) poor countries to fight against bird flu.

An announcement ( 宣告 ) issued by the World Health Organization stated that effectively fighting against bird flu depends on cooperation among countries. It demanded all members report any incidents ( 事件 / 個案 ) that might threaten public health ( 公共衛生 ).

The United Nations planned to set up a warning system.

The Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN 東南亞國家聯盟 ) decided to set up a regional network of antiviral drugs stockpile ( 積存 ).

The European Union ( 歐盟 ) and the World Bank raised money internationally to sponsor ( 贊助 ) activities to fight bird flu.
