Students will also be asked to do research and writing to gain an advance understanding of their work with historical relevance and personal conceptual development and artistic style.

× Senior Capstone and Portfolio This course is designed to assist Art & Digital Design (AAD) students in preparing a mature and cohesive body of creative work. The students will deliver an oral defense of this work as well as develop an artist’s statement and visual portfolio of creative works. The second component of this course is to create an electronic portfolio that will aid the AAD students in demonstrating the transferable knowledge and skills that they have developed through their liberal arts education at Loras College. Lastly, the course provides students with the opportunity to professionally present their strengths and accomplishments through the development of a cover letter and resume.

through sustained (consecutive semesters) practice in making and critiquing your creative work. There will be no prescribed projects by the instructor, rather you will begin to present new work of your choosing for critical review by peers and faculty. We see this series of courses as a vehicle to help build a portfolio over the course of these semesters and to help build the foundation for a cohesive body of work demonstrated in your final senior thesis exhibition.

× History of Art, Graphic Design and Interactive Design × Introduction to Critical Portfolio (General Education Curriculum)

Portfolio is a 1-credit course designed to assist students in demonstrating the transferable knowledge and skills that they have developed through their liberal arts education at Loras College. In addition, the course provides students with the opportunity to professionally present their strengths and accomplishments through the development of a cover letter and resume.

× Critical Portfolio (General Education Curriculum) × Discover the World of Art History (J-term Study Abroad: England and France)

Art History comes alive as students see and study 20th century painting and sculpture in person as they travel to England and France. This course includes a 12 day travel field experience to Manchester, York, Leeds, Oxford, London, and Paris. Students will examine modern art as they learn to look and analyze work within a historical context and to articulate what they see and experience. Students will visit the National Gallery, Tate Britain and Tate Modern, Saatchi Gallery, Versailles, Louvre, Musée d’Orsay, Musée Rodin, Musée Picasso, and Musée National d’Art Moderne to name a few. They will see works by Monet, Degas, Renoir, Van Gogh, Picasso, Salvador Dali, Henry Moore, Andy Goldsworthy, and Damien Hirst.

× Mixed Media I & II × 2D Visual Theory and Practice (General Education Curriculum) × Clustered Beginning Drawing with American West (History) – IA

The “cluster” is made up of two courses that are carefully constructed from two different disciplines where faculty identify important intellectual pathways that builds connections or a bridge between disciplines. This is an Advanced General Education requirement. Cluster Connections for this course: There is a lot to be garnered in the study of visuals that will broaden our understanding of history and identity. Our courses intersect in several interesting ways: The aesthetic principles and skills learned in Drawing adds a dimension to our use of the art object as primary source materials in History. In effort to better understand the creation of a myth or story verses the documentation of reality, the class will contrast a representational drawing with the same subject matter idealized or imagined. We’ll take a look at nineteenth century/early twentieth century art history and how to visually read these images to better understand what’s going on in the world at any particular time. We will look at how the creation of art allows people to express themselves: as a community or part of a group and as a means of self-expression. Students will model what it might be like to experience the West in the 19th Century by visually documenting these experiences. In the close study of the environment, object or people, students will learn to see subtle information that will help enrich their understanding of this time and people, while also discovering their own identities.

× Clustered 2D Visual Theory and Practice with Chemistry of Art (Chemistry) – HA The “cluster” is made up of two courses that are carefully constructed from two different disciplines where faculty identify important intellectual pathways that builds connections or a bridge between disciplines. This is an Advanced General Education requirement. Cluster Connections for this course: In the chemistry course, they made the art materials that were then used in the art course. Along the way, we explored many topics, but one common topic we explored in both classes was the scientific method. Evaluating and studying how a scientist approaches an experiment and compared it to how an artist goes about creating a strong artwork. I challenged my students to use the scientific method - make an observation, form a question, form a hypothesis, conduct the experiment, then evaluate the findings – by comparing and contrasting these steps to the steps an artist will use to create a work. This helped to create a bridge between the disciplines.

× Independent Study – varies topics × Modes of Inquiry (1st year student course)

As a critical part of a student’s First Year Experience at Loras College, the Modes of Inquiry Course seeks: To introduce students to liberal arts learning and the Loras general education curriculum. To regularly engage students in active learning experiences and provide the skills and resources needed to promote active learning outside of the classroom. To enable confident questioning and critique in a variety of contexts by enhancing students’ critical thinking and reading skills. To provide information and resources on a variety of academic and social transition issues and engage students in critical discussion of these issues. To strengthen the academic skills necessary for students to pursue a liberal arts education and become life-long learners, particularly critical thinking and reading, and information literacy. To introduce students to, and have them be an active part of, quality advising and educational planning. To engage students in collaborative activities that allow them to work with other first year peers and recognize the benefits and challenges associated with group collaboration.

Students learn drawing and design terminology, and how to evaluate their own work and the work of others. In addition, students are introduced to a number of drawing materials and techniques. Teaching Assistant. Georgia Southern University. 2002. Study of Pedagogical Theory through Drawing One with Dr. Bruce Little.
