SALVADOR ‘Brazilian capital of happiness’ due to its countless popular outdoor parties, including its street carnival. As the first colonial capital of Brazil, Salvador da Bahia is one of the oldest cities and the third most populous city in the country. Most of its population has preserved its Afro-Brazilian roots resulting in an important centre for culture and art. Visually, the city is stunning, with 17th- and 18th-century architecture dotted with gold-embellished churches.
