A b s t r a c t : An independent chemica l c o m p a t i b i l i t y r e v i e w o f LLCE HDPE p o l y e t h y l e n e b u r i a l c o n t a i n e r s was conducted t o e v a l u a t e t h e c o n t a i n e r r e s i s t a n c e t o t h e c h e m i c a l s and c o n s t i t u e n t s t h o u g h t t o r e s i d e w i t h i n t h e Tank Farms. The s t u d y conc luded t h a t t h e LLCE B u r i a l C o n t a i n e r f a b r i c a t e d f r o m HDPE P o l y e t h y l e n e was a good c h o i c e f o r t h i s a p p l i c a t i o n . c o n t a i n e r s r e q u i r e 2 - 3% f i n e l y d i s p e n s e d c a r b o n b l a c k w h i c h a l l o w s l o n g t e r m s t o r a g e o u t s i d e .

Howver, halogenated hydrocarbons (both a1 i p h a t i c and a romat i c ) do p r e s e n t a probl em. Reference 7 1 i s t s recommended mximum c o n c e n t r a t i o n s provided by s e v e r a l manufacturers of H D P E l i n e r s . The v a l u e s ranged f r o 3 50 t o 2000 mg/l f o r a romat i c halogenated hydrocarbons and 100 t o 5000 mg/l f o r a l i p h a t i c halogenated hydrocarbons. One manufacturer s t a t e d the effect o f t h e s e coapounds t o g e n e r a l l y degrade t h e s t r e n g t h of the m a t e r i a l . e f f e c t s a r e inc reased with i n c r e a s e s i n t empera tu re .

As f o r the a romat i c hydrocarbon, Reference 6 s p e c i f i c a l l y l i s t phenol , n i t robenzene , and naphthalene a s r e s i s t a n t up t o 73". a s naphthalene a r e l i s t e d in Reference 7 with a manufacturers maximum c o n c e n t r a t i o n recommendation r ang ing from 200 t o 10,000 mg/l . The o n l y p o t e n t i a l concern a f t e r completing the d e t a i l e d review i s halogenated hydrocarbons. r ega rd ing q u a n t i t i e s o r concen t r a t ions . Seve ra l i n d i v i d u a l s were con tac t ed conce rn ing t a n k farm waste . All sou rce ag ree t h a t t h e r e a r e no t s i g n i f i c a n t q u a n t i t i e s o f halogenated hydrocarbons in the t a n k fa rms . In g e n e r a l , t a n k farm was te i s aqueous con ta in ing many s a l t s .

I n conc lus ion , HDPE i s a good cho ice f o r chemical c o m p a t i b i l i t y . I t should be no ted t h a t most chemical c o m p a t i b i l i t y i n fo rma t ion was temperature dependent .
