Numerous companies have come and gone while some have stayed and made a name for themselves big time. Thus, the art of making combustion engines was perfected by mankind and where there was an opportunity to improve, we have grabbed it. En- gines have become more powerful, more efficient and less thirsty, thanks to the endless attempts to make them better than they were in their first form. Now however, we need more. More power, more efficiency and more mileage per litre of fuel and that has gone beyond the realms of what a petrol or diesel engine car can do. Although we have started using electrically-run turbos and even elec- tric vehicles, the jump to it has taken some time and will take some more. The developed nations know this and thus they created platforms and tax structures that saw the introduc- tion of hybrid vehicles into the market a much easier affair. This combination of stringent emission norms, a friendly tax structure saw the cost of hybrid cars stay on a par with any other vehicle. On the flip side, it even helped create three of the most iconic cars of recent history, the McLaren P1, The Porsche 918 Spyder and the Ferrari LaFerrari. So much was their impact, that they were termed the ‘Holy Trinity’. You see, what these norms brought out is the fact that hybrids need not be boring and dull and instead can make the petrol or diesel-powered car a more sensual one and that too by keeping the green activists happy. The Indian government, however, thinks in a rather different way. The recent GST reform in the country saw the tax on hybrid cars increased to 43 per cent. But what is interesting is that the tax on electric vehicles has come down to 12 per cent so that the government can implement its express objective of having a full electric transport fleet all over the nation by 2030. It does not take a genius to un- derstand that to implement the fully electric car idea one has to start in the right way, i.e.; reduce petrol and diesel-powered vehicles by increas- ing the sale of hybrid cars and then when the time is right - that is, the infrastructure to power the vehicles is ready - the government can go with fully electric automobiles. The government is hell bent on re- ducing vehicles using fossil fuels as they have made cars more and more costly. Now, the government is said to be contemplating on increasing the fuel excise duty so that it will become nigh-on impossible to run a petrol or diesel vehicle as a litre of fuel will from then on cost a million rupees. Although automakers like Toyota, who sell hybrid cars in India have said they will continue selling their cars, they know that not many people will take hybrid cars as they are dearer. If I was in the market for a hybrid car, because it costs at least a lakh rupees more, I would buy a normal car instead and use the extra money to pay my taxes, insurance and fuel bills. What the government has done is that, they are pushing people in the direction opposite to that of where they wanted them to go. Company car drivers, who bought hybrid cars the most, will now resort to normal cars and save their pockets from being burnt to a crisp. And what about the heavy fleets then? If a truck has to ride for 2,000 km, would it be feasible to have an electric vehicle that needs charging every 10 miles or a trusty diesel? You might argue that the electric future will be different than what it is now and that things will change. But if the idea was to rid the streets of petrol / diesel-powered ve- hicles towards the end of this century, then it is fine. But with just is smidgen more than 10 years time, yeah right. In a country riddled with power short- ages, fully electric vehicles need not be a distant dream but it is important to determine what our priorities are. Millions of homes in the country are without electricity. We need to build the base first, the infrastructure to support such a fleet. The government must invest more in electricity generation in ways like solar energy, tidal energy, wind energy and so many other ways. Roads with solar cells are a reality now. We need a base to stand on, without that, no matter how high we jump, we will not have a place to stand when we come falling down. No matter how green electric cars are, if the government does not invest in greener ways of producing the electricity that powers these cars, then the cars will not be green. BALAMURUGAN SELVARAJ A few weeks back, researchers at Kaspersky lab found traces of a year-old Android Trojan spread- ing through messages. Apart from that it is also programmed to record infected victim's phone conversa- tions and user credentials in taxi booking apps and transfers it to the attacker's server, as soon as it connects with Internet. How it works Faketoken.q spreads through bulk SMS messages incorporated with malicious link, that prompts the victims to download image file. The malicious Trojan lies inside the image.
