Here’s a review of the basic pieces of inform

ation which a player writes when recording a m

ove:

(If it is clear exactly which m

an you’re moving, you don’t need to w

rite the starting square.)

•whether or not the chessm

an is making a capture

This tablet has 20 special scoresheets. On the

left side of each scoresheet are the moves and

final position from a m

iniature (short) game.

•Each of these actual games lasted less than

25 moves.

•Each ended by one side giving checkmate.

•All of these gam

es begin with a king-pawn opening.

•All of the gam

es are OLD

(most of them

are from

the era of the Civil War!) -- but

thanks to chess notation, we can replay and learn from

them even after 100 years!

The miniature gam

es come from

several sources, including ChessBase 1.0 and the work of Chris W

ard, Ken Whyld, Rom

an Pelts, Lev Alburt, I. A

. H

orowitz, Fred Reinfeld, and James Eade.

The exact details of the games differed a few

times from

one source to the next. This is no surprise to anyone who’s ever notated their own gam

es. In the heat of competition, it’s incredibly

easy to forget to write down a move or two, or to

slip into unreadable scribbling! While the sources

agreed on the final positions of these miniature

games, there were m

inor discrepancies about the order of som

e moves and about exactly where or

when certain games were played.

Exercise 2

On the right of each sheet is a blank recording

form. Please m

ake the necessary arrangements

for Hugh and Yura Ponentz to fill out these pages.

This is a crucial step for completing this

collection of fine instructional games!

Chances are, these 20 new games will be m

arked by outstanding defense and will last m

uch longer than the m

iniature games. That’s why there’s

room for 75 m

oves per game. A

fter these new instructional gam

es have been added, be sure to study them

just as you did the miniature gam

es!

iniature games.
