Upcoming Events for November

Honoring Veteran’s Day

Veteran’s Day is a time where we honor our heroes and

remember their achievements, courage and dedication, and to

say thank you for their sacrifices.

Millions of Americans have fought and died on battlefields to

defend our freedoms and way of life. Today our troops continue

to make the ultimate sacrifices, and even as we lose troops, more

Americans step forward to say, I’m ready to serve. They follow

in the footsteps of generations of fine Americans.

As Americans, it is our duty to all of those brave soldiers to take

the time to recognize them and show our support and gratitude.

On Friday, November 9th, the GCCC will take a moment to

thank our Veteran’s for their service and show our support by

making and handing out red poppies with members. Red

Poppies symbolize the sacrifices made and we will wear these

red poppies to

show we support

all of our Veteran’s

and we Thank You

For all of your

Sacrifices.

Senior Center Sponsors

Why do we need Sponsors? Our mission is to make a positive difference in the lives of older adults living in our

community. We accomplish this by offering interesting programs in a warm and welcoming setting.

To continue to offer vital services to everyone, we must expand the way we raise funds. Sponsorships will allow us

to continue to provide the services our members have come to rely upon along with the ability to pursue building

expansion opportunities, without asking for any out of pocket funds from them.

If you are interested in becoming a sponsor, please contact Heather Goebeler or Kasie Ream at 244-7229. (Sponsors listed in the newsletter are paid advertisers. The center does not endorse any one sponsor.)

The Following is a Current List of Center Sponsors,

who help make our programs possible:

Founded on guiding principles and core values, our management team has fostered a mission-driven culture based on commitment and empowerment. Our reputation for best-in-class patient care and unparalleled customer service, combined with our local and regional density make us the provider of choice for both patients and referral sources in the markets we serve. DPTI’s services include a comprehensive offering of rehabilitative programs designed to treat sports-related injuries and orthopedic related disorders. We also offer preventative care and training as well as occupational health services in order to meet the diverse needs of our patient populations. To our patients, we commit to provide the most effective, clinically superior physical therapy humanly possible at a fair price. The measure of our success will be found in the trust we build and in the hearts of those we heal.

More to look forward to ...

YCCF’s Embracing Aging Awards $89,000 in Grants

To Improve Lives of Older Adults in York County

Eleven programs designed to improve the quality of life for older adults in York County are the newest recipients of grants from the York County Community Foundation’s (YCCF) Hahn Home Fund for Embracing Aging. Cathy Bollinger, Managing Director of Embracing Aging, states “We’re excited for this year’s recipients and look forward to seeing the impact their programs have on helping to make York County a great place to age!” “Volunteers from the community read and score each grant application based on pre-determined criteria,” shares Timothy J. Bupp, Esq., Chair of the Embracing Aging Distribution Committee and YCCF Board Director. “These volunteers bring a wide array of expertise to the process. They ask insightful questions about each application to ensure the programs they recommend for funding have a positive impact on the people they serve. We’re extremely grateful to the group who serve on the Embracing Aging Distribution Committee.” This years Recipients were as follows: Leg Up Farm, Strand Capital Performing Arts, Normandie Ridge, York County Food Bank, September House, Theatre Arts for Everyone, Golden Connections Community Center, Crispus Attucks, City of York-Bureau of Health, Windy Hill Senior Center, Jessica & Friends Community. YCCF’s Embracing Aging initiative strives to create a community that is a safe, welcoming, appropriate and adaptable place to age by improving attitudes around one’s own aging and senior adults to increase understanding and caring about the needs and perspectives of all ages. YCCF provides grants to increase high-quality and forward-thinking options to help seniors live as they choose in their community. York County Community Foundation’s Hahn Home Fund supports Embracing Aging, which began with the vision of one woman, Anna Gardner, who died in 1913 and gifted her estate to help care for older women in the community. Over 100 years later, YCCF is carrying out her legacy.

Photography Club The Golden Connections Community Center kicked off its first Photography Club meeting in October and are excited for the future of this new program. After discussion and debate, the club has decided that it will meet monthly at the GCCC on the 4th Friday of each month. The next club meeting is scheduled for Friday, November 30th at 12:15 p.m. At this meeting members plan to bring their camera’s and/or smart phones and take the time to learn about all the functions their camera’s/smart phones offer when taking pictures. We encourage anyone interested to attend and don’t forget to bring those instruction manuals to assist with the learning process.

Essential Oils 101 Essential Oils 101 classes have proven to encourage participants to make life

changes and attempt to become healthier in many different ways. Each class

has offered an abundance of information and given those who attend an

opportunity to ask questions regarding oils and what they offer. Who would

of thought there was so much information available about the benefits and

everyday uses for these aromatic oils. The next GCCC Essential Oils 101

class is scheduled for Monday, November 26th at 12:15 a.m. This class will

be a Make and Take class that offers the opportunity for members to make

gifts for the holiday season using our essential oils. This class will have a

minimal fee to participate. This fee will range between $2.00 –

$10.00 depending on how many gifts you choose to make. Feel

Free to join us in learning how to make easy, nourishing, and

healthy gifts for friends and family.

The 2018 Subaru Share the Love Event is about to kick off and we are reaching out to our center and community members alike for help with this years event. The GCCC will hold an Empty Bowl non-perishable food collection drive for snow emergencies for our Meals on Wheels Program as part of The 2018 Subaru Share the Love Event. We encourage Center members and members of the community to bring in donation items to assist our local home bound Meals on Wheels recipients, should snow emergency occur this winter season. These items are scheduled to be distributed on December 4th, so we ask all donations to be brought to the GCCC before November 30 to allow staff time to sort through donations. The 2018 Subaru Share the Love Event runs from November 15 – January 2. During this time period Subaru will donate $250 for every new Subaru Vehicle purchased or leased to the customer’s choice of four national charities with a minimum guarantee of $250,000. If you are looking for a new vehicle this season, please take a look at your local Subaru Dealer. Our center received over $8,000 as part of last year’s event. All money received supports programs and services for older adults living in our community.

The Golden Connections Community Center has been so fortunate to be able to continue to offer Art Classes with Artist Judeth Hawkins. She continues to offer us unique and exciting projects every month and October proves to be no different. On November 14th at 10:15 a.m. participants will Construct a small cardboard loom and learn to WEAVE! Then participants will enjoy learning Drawing Games on November 28th at 10:15 a.m. Those who join the Art Studio Class on this date will have fun drawing and discovering your own style. Feel free to join us on either or both of those dates, as the Art Studio Class continues to open our eyes to the wonderful world of the Arts!

Golden Connections Giving Back

IT’S TIME TO GIVE BACK! Members have spent the past

few months working hard to make handmade holiday stockings to give out this

holiday season to residents at a local nursing center. As the holiday season is fast

approaching and the final touches are being put on the stockings, it is time for us to

reach out to our fellow center and community members. This year we wanted to

take the opportunity to give back and now we NEED YOUR HELP! The GCCC

is asking for donations of toiletry items, small prepackaged snacks, crossword

puzzles, or decks of cards all to be put in the stockings and then distributed by

Center members over the holiday season. Donations can

be dropped of at the GCCC anytime

between 9:00 a.m. – 2:30 p.m. Our next
