Media Updates on Tharparkar Drought as on 19-11-2014 Date Situation Update Source

19-11-2014 Nearly 300 children have died this year in Tharparkar, officials said on Wednesday, as poor monsoon rains and livestock diseases have combined to worsen malnutrition. Tharparkar has seen an alarming number of children suffering pneumonia and diarrhoea due to drought, poverty and poor health infrastructure. The deaths have prompted criticism for the Pakistan People’s Party (PPP), which governs in Sindh. A total of 496 people, 296 of them were children, have died in Tharparkar this year, Taj Haider, a senior PPP official with responsibility for the Thar situation, told AFP. Since the start of October, 48 children have died in Tharparkar, according to Doctor Abdul Jalil, district health officer for Tharparkar district. This week around 40 children, some in critical condition, are undergoing treatment in a hospital in Mithi, the nearest town to the affected area, according to humanitarian sources. “The current situation is due to a combination of factors. Low rainfall and sheep pox exacerbated malnutrition and (there was) a lack of health care facilities,” a UN official told AFP. Life in the desert is closely tied to rain-dependent crops and animals, with farmers relying on beans, wheat and sesame seeds for survival. They barter any surplus for livestock. There are few health care facilities in the area, and families must travel substantial distances to seek treatment.

19-11-2014 Eight more children died in separate areas of Tharparkar district on 19th Nov, raising the death toll to 96, including 89 children, in the last 49 days. Rozina Mehranpoto, who was only 25 days old, died at Civil Hospital, Mithi, and the largest hospital in the drought-affected district. She was brought to the hospital in a critical condition and breathed her last during treatment. Seven other children died in their villages. Four months old Farzana belonged to Lakhwaki village in Diplo tehsil. In Alamsir village, 40 days old Qurban Rahimoon and twins Shehnaz and Mehnaz passed away. Meanwhile, six months old Umeedan, the three days old son of Sohrab Rajar and the three-day-old daughter of Nawab Rajar died in Hayat Halepoto village in Chachro tehsil. ‘Deliberate’ water shortage Hundreds of people from three of Tharparkar’s barrage union councils, Khitlari, Kaloi and Bhitaro, staged a sit-in at Mithi-Naukot Road, blocking it for five hours. They were protesting against what they said was a ‘deliberate’ water shortage in their areas for several days. They alleged that irrigation officials were involved in criminal negligence and were providing water to influential persons instead.

17-11-2014 In its continuing relief operation in the drought hit Dhani, Chachro, Khinser, Dali, Mithi areas of Tharparker, Pakistan Army has so far distributed a total of 150 tonnes of ration among 14,130 families through 33 distribution points. According to an ISPR press release issued on Sunday, as many as 18,491 patients were treated during army relief efforts in Tharparkar district at 29 army medical camps.

United Methodist Committee on Relief (UMCOR) Help for Recovery in

Pakistan after South Asia Floods as of 18-11-2014 The United Methodist Committee on Relief (UMCOR) is partnering with local and international humanitarian

organizations that have extensive experience of the region and its challenges. The partners include operating

from Pakistan, the globally constituted Church World Service. In Pakistan, local Christian groups have been active

in providing relief, and UMCOR is supporting them.

In addition, GlobalMedic, a health-oriented organization based in Canada and that has long been active in

Pakistan is using its funding from UMCOR to carry out post-disaster water-purification across the affected areas.

Meeting Food and Hygiene Needs

GlobalMedic became fully engaged in Pakistan and, with UMCOR support, has provided “RainFresh”

household water-purification units and educated entire communities in their use. Each unit distributed

by GlobalMedic is designed to ensure clean, drinkable water for a family of seven for six months.

Daily Emergency and Response Situational Information Report –20th Nov, 2014

In Pakistan, UMCOR has supported the efforts of the Multan Diocese of the Church of Pakistan to meet

desperate food and hygiene needs among residents in their district of the Punjab province. And the

Christian movement Paigaam Ministries also has employed UMCOR funds to provide food, non-food

items and water in Punjab’s Jhang district.

In the Bagh district of Pakistan’s Azad Kashmir territory, Church World Service is providing emergency

food kits with the help of an UMCOR grant. The grant also covers CWS’s provision of essential practical

goods such as jerry-cans, buckets, mosquito nets and sleeping mats.

Global Polio Eradication Initiative (GPEI) Updates on Polio Situation in

Pakistan as of 19-11-2014 Ten new wild poliovirus type 1 (WPV1) cases were reported in the past week. Six were from the

Federally Administered Tribal Areas (FATA), with 1 in South Waziristan, and 5 in Khyber Agency; 1 from

Killa Abdullah district in Balochistan province; 1 from Mardin district in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province;

and 2 from Sindh province (1 in Bin Qasim town of Karachi city and 1 in Badin district, southern Sindh

province). The total number of WPV1 cases in Pakistan in 2014 is now 246, compared to 63 at this time

last year. The most recent WPV1 case had onset of paralysis on 1 November, from Khyber Agency,

FATA.

No cases of type 2 circulating vaccine-derived poliovirus (cVDPV2 were reported in the past week. This

most recent cVDPV2 case had onset of paralysis in Khyber Agency, FATA, on 16 September. The country

has reported 20 cases of cVDPV2 in 2014.

Immunization activities are continuing with particular focus on known high-risk areas, in particular

newly opened previously inaccessible areas of FATA. At exit and entry points of conflict-affected areas

that are still inaccessible during polio campaigns, 100 permanent vaccination points are being used to

reach internally displaced families as they move in and out of the inaccessible area. Over 1 million

people have been vaccinated in the past few months at transit points and in host communities,

including over 850,000 children under 10 years old.
