What is FP7 Science in Society? What are National Contact Points?

SiS net project supports the network of National Contact Points for FP7 Science in Society.

NCPs assist project proposers that want to apply for funding in FP7 Science in Society programme, e.g. for science education projects

FP7 Science in Society programme within Capacities supports activities that bring together science and society at large, such as:

Science communication Young people and science Gender and science

Objectives of the project

• Strengthen the network of National Contact Points for FP7 Science in Society across Europe

• Improve SiS NCP service across Europe with training and best practice sharing

• Increase consistency in NCP work

• Provide better service to project proposers in FP7 SiS

• Promote the Science in Society programme

FP7 Science in SocietyActivities in the field of Science in Society aim to:

"stimulate, with a view to building an open, effective and democratic European knowledge-based society, the harmonious integration of scientific and technological endeavour, and associated research policies in the European social web, by encouraging pan-European reflection and debate on science and technology and their relationship with the whole spectrum of society and culture".

Budget: € 330 million for FP7 (2007-2013)

What activities are funded?1. A more dynamic governance of the relationship between science and

society • Research on ethics in science and technology;• The reciprocal influence of science and culture;• Conditions for an informed debate on ethics and science;

2. Strengthening potential, broadening horizons • Strengthening the role of women in scientific research;• Supporting formal and informal science education in schools as well as through science

centres and museums and other relevant means;• Reinforcing links between science education and science careers;

3. Science and society communication • Encouraging a European dimension at science events targeting the public;• Science prizes;

4. Trans-national cooperation of National Contact Points (NCPs) for Science in society.

Science education topics in FP7 SiS (1)Activity 5.2.2 Young People and Science Supporting formal and informal science education in schools as

well as through science centres and museums and other relevant means: • Supporting and coordinating actions on innovative methods in science

education: teacher training on inquiry based teaching methods Reinforcing links between science education and science careers:

• Identification of trends in scientific studies• Reinforcing links between science education and S&T careers in the

private sector through reinforcing the industry/education partnership
