DESCRIPTION

In an age of algorithms who you are is in part determined by your digital footprint, which means that if you network for business then you will need to do so online. Why? Because while business is in some ways the same as it ever was (based on mutually beneficial relationships) social media has turned the way we form those relationships on its head. You may look around and think that you (or your peers) don’t use social media and are still doing fine but this is not looking in the right direction. Professionals need to look ahead and adapt the way they connect and communicate to keep up with this change. One way they are doing so is on LinkedIn. Often referred to as the ‘new networking for business’ LinkedIn is not so new really, at 10 years old and with 200 million members around the world, four million in Australia.

200 million reasons to be on Linked In (& what to do when you get there)

Page 2: 200 million reasons to be on LinkedIn

In today’s age of algorithms, who you are is in part determined by your digital footprint.

Page 3: 200 million reasons to be on LinkedIn

That means that if you network for business then you will need to do so online.

Page 4: 200 million reasons to be on LinkedIn

Why?

Page 5: 200 million reasons to be on LinkedIn

Because while business is in some ways the same as it ever was, based on mutually beneficial relationships...

Page 6: 200 million reasons to be on LinkedIn

… social media has turned the way we form those relationships on its head.

Page 7: 200 million reasons to be on LinkedIn

You may look around and think that you or your peers don’t use social media and are still doing fine…

Page 8: 200 million reasons to be on LinkedIn

… but that is not looking in the right direction.

Page 9: 200 million reasons to be on LinkedIn

Almost two billion people use social media right now and that trend shows no signs of abating with predictions it will reach 2.55 billion by 2017.

Page 10: 200 million reasons to be on LinkedIn

Professionals need to look ahead & adapt the way they connect and communicate to keep up with this

change.

Page 11: 200 million reasons to be on LinkedIn

One way they are doing so is on LinkedIn.

Page 12: 200 million reasons to be on LinkedIn

Often referred to as the ‘new networking for business’ LinkedIn is not so new really, at 10 years old and

with 200 million members around the world.

Page 13: 200 million reasons to be on LinkedIn

But just signing up and doing nothing is like going to a networking lunch and standing in the corner.

Page 14: 200 million reasons to be on LinkedIn

You’ve got to know what to do once you are there.

Page 15: 200 million reasons to be on LinkedIn

Naturally how you use LinkedIn depends on what you want to achieve.

Page 16: 200 million reasons to be on LinkedIn

Businesses can use it to raise funds, for recruitment, job search or networking, amongst other things.

Page 17: 200 million reasons to be on LinkedIn

Whatever your goal, executives tend to have similar questions about what to do when starting out.

Page 18: 200 million reasons to be on LinkedIn

These sound familiar?

Page 19: 200 million reasons to be on LinkedIn

Should I use a photograph?

Page 20: 200 million reasons to be on LinkedIn

Yes.

Page 21: 200 million reasons to be on LinkedIn

People like to deal with people.

Page 22: 200 million reasons to be on LinkedIn

Use a recent high quality photograph.

Page 23: 200 million reasons to be on LinkedIn

Remember digital does not replace real life connection it extends it.

Page 24: 200 million reasons to be on LinkedIn

Do I have to give endorsements back?

Page 25: 200 million reasons to be on LinkedIn

No.

Page 26: 200 million reasons to be on LinkedIn

If you do, only endorse people for skills you know they have. If you mistakenly endorse someone don’t

worry, you can withdraw it.

Page 27: 200 million reasons to be on LinkedIn

Pod Legal reminds us that displaying fake endorsements could get you in trouble with the law.

Page 28: 200 million reasons to be on LinkedIn

Should I give recommendations?

Page 29: 200 million reasons to be on LinkedIn

As in real life, so online.

Page 30: 200 million reasons to be on LinkedIn

Your recommendations go to your reputation so use them judiciously.

Page 31: 200 million reasons to be on LinkedIn

But where they are deserved, go ahead.

Page 32: 200 million reasons to be on LinkedIn

What do I say about myself?

Page 33: 200 million reasons to be on LinkedIn

Your 120–character headline is prime real estate so differentiate yourself.

Page 34: 200 million reasons to be on LinkedIn

There are lots of ‘senior executives’ out there.

Page 35: 200 million reasons to be on LinkedIn

Be the “not-for-profit CEO who successfully delivered a 500% increase in diabetes funding in two years.”

Page 36: 200 million reasons to be on LinkedIn

Do I share my employment history?

Page 37: 200 million reasons to be on LinkedIn

Your history provides legitimacy in particular if it comes with credible recommendations.

Page 38: 200 million reasons to be on LinkedIn

But you do not need to write War and Peace.

Page 39: 200 million reasons to be on LinkedIn

Who should I connect with?

Page 40: 200 million reasons to be on LinkedIn

As in real life…

Page 41: 200 million reasons to be on LinkedIn

… you need to build strategic connections with influencers, colleagues and potential business

interests.

Page 42: 200 million reasons to be on LinkedIn

But algorithms also work out your interests and throw unknowns in your path.

Page 43: 200 million reasons to be on LinkedIn

I LOVE this.

Page 44: 200 million reasons to be on LinkedIn

But how open you are to it will depend on your personality.

Page 45: 200 million reasons to be on LinkedIn

Only connecting if there’s a potential business outcome feels a bit like pyramid selling to me.

Page 46: 200 million reasons to be on LinkedIn

I’ve met up with many people just because I found them interesting.

Page 47: 200 million reasons to be on LinkedIn

It’s enriching and I’ve made many amazing contacts as a result…

Page 48: 200 million reasons to be on LinkedIn

But that’s me … (you have to be you)

Page 49: 200 million reasons to be on LinkedIn

Should I join groups?

Page 50: 200 million reasons to be on LinkedIn

That depends…

Page 51: 200 million reasons to be on LinkedIn

Groups bring together people with strong interests and can be great for exchanging views.

Page 52: 200 million reasons to be on LinkedIn

However, some people just post links to their own content and don’t add to the community.

Page 53: 200 million reasons to be on LinkedIn

ME, ME, ME …

Page 54: 200 million reasons to be on LinkedIn

As a result, the value varies greatly.

Page 55: 200 million reasons to be on LinkedIn

If you are time poor, which most executives are, try niche groups with members who are seriously

interested in a topic.

Page 56: 200 million reasons to be on LinkedIn

Can I outsource my LinkedIn engagement?

Page 57: 200 million reasons to be on LinkedIn

Would you send your assistant to a cocktail party to talk on your behalf?

Page 58: 200 million reasons to be on LinkedIn

A virtual connection is a personal connection that has not yet made its way into real

life (IRL).

Page 59: 200 million reasons to be on LinkedIn

By all means get a consultant to set up, brand or teach you LinkedIn or someone to manage the

administration & tactics.

Page 60: 200 million reasons to be on LinkedIn

But engagement is about the real YOU.

Page 61: 200 million reasons to be on LinkedIn
Page 62: 200 million reasons to be on LinkedIn

But how will I find the time?

Page 63: 200 million reasons to be on LinkedIn

Allocate an hour a week to reading but arrange for the material to be shared across the week by using scheduling tools like Bufferapp, Sprout Social or

Hoot Suite.

Page 64: 200 million reasons to be on LinkedIn

You probably already read after hours and pass on articles, it’s no different.

Page 65: 200 million reasons to be on LinkedIn

The reality is that networking takes time.

Page 66: 200 million reasons to be on LinkedIn

…whether it’s having lunch or playing golf or engaging online.

Page 67: 200 million reasons to be on LinkedIn

But you do it because it’s worthwhile.
