Dear Parishioners,

As the celebration of Independence Day approaches, American Catholics are being forced

to face an unpleasant reality. As you are aware, no doubt, that Bishop Zubik is one of the leading

voices speaking out about the possible loss of Religious freedom if indeed the government is per-

mitted to force our Church to pay for benefits that violate our moral teaching. This is an important

issue that is not going to go away. A three-fold plan of prayer support and action is promoted: We

need your prayers - thanking God for the great gift of religious liberty. We need your support - spreading the

message of religious liberty and the right of conscience. We need your action - vote; sign up for the PA Catholic

Advocacy Network; contact legislators; speak out. Log on to www.pacatholic.org to keep the flame of liberty burn- ing brightly!

If any of our High School students need to fulfill service hour requirements, please call me. There is lots of litter cleaning/weeding projects needing attention. The parish would be glad for your help.

Thank you, so many of you for returning the Pastoral Council Surveys. We have over 90 which is really

going to give the Council and me a good sampling from which to work.

YOUTH GROUP ACTIVITY! Catholic Youth Day at Kennywood, Friday, July 6, all day ride passes are $23.50 and fee for the bus is $5.00. Buses will depart from Our Lady of Fatima in Hopewell at 9:30 a.m. sharp. Forms area available in the rectory office for anyone interested in attending. Payment is due in advance. We also will need adult chaperones (with clearances) to accompany the students. Please contact Sr. Grace by Friday, June 29.

We are in need of CATHECHISTS HELPERS. Our Religion Program is a very important part of our parish life. We have about 240 students attending public schools. Most grades in the program have about 25-30 students or more. To rightly service these students it is necessary to have at least two rooms for each grade. Presently we are in need of Catechist Helpers for Grades 7-8 on Sunday Morning. Would you please look into your heart to see if there is any way you could help us. If your child is in the CCD program, are you able to offer your services this year? Depending on the number of volunteers your help may only be needed a few times the entire year. Anyone volunteering to work with children are required to have clearances and to have attended Protecting God’s Children Workshop. Thank you for considering helping in this important ministry. Call the Religious Education Office at 724-775-4111, if you are able to help us this year.

A ROSARY RALLY will be held today, Sunday, July 1. We will pray the rosary and the Divine Mercy Chaplet for the Sick and the Dying with Eucharistic Adoration following until 5:00 p.m. All are invited.

We are grateful for the donation made to the ANGEL FUND in memory of Joe Lintz by Bob and JoAnn Cook. We are also thankful for the donation made to the WE CARE FUND in memory of Don Hamer by The King Beaver Tenant Association.

SSPP SCHOOL SUMMER HOURS The school office will be closed June 25 thru July 27. The office will be open Monday thru Thursday from 9:00 am to 1:00 pm the week of July 30 and August 6. The week of August 13, Monday-Friday from 9:00 am to 2:30 pm; August 20-22, Monday-Wednesday from 8:00 am - 3:30 pm; August 23 First Day of School. ARISE TO GLORY Please remember in your Masses and prayers the souls of Charles Summers, Bill Vico, and all the faithful departed. IMPORTANT: Sacramental Records incomplete. If you had a child, or visiting grandchild perhaps, baptized between March, 2009 through all of 2009, we need to speak to someone. Likewise with marriages from June, 2007 through August, 2009. We need to make sure we have all the information recorded properly. With summer, things slow a bit and we thought it would be a good time to tackle this problem. THE RECTORY OFFICE WILL BE CLOSED ON WEDNESDAY, JULY 4. WE WILL REOPEN ON

A FAMILY PERSPECTIVE by Bud Ozar. The healing of the woman and the child in today’s gospel is a reminder we are all wounded. We retreat to those we love looking for acceptance, listening, understanding and support. Families must be healing communities where Jesus is present in our care for one another.

THURSDAY, JULY 5. HAVE A GREAT HOLIDAY. All are welcome to help decorate for VBS beginning Monday, July 16 thru Friday, July 20, from 9 am to 12 noon. WE NEED

The fourteen days from June 21- the vigil of the Feasts of St. John Fisher and St. Thomas More-to July 4, Independence Day, are dedicated to this “fortnight for freedom”- a great hymn of prayer for our country. Our liturgical cal-

endar celebrates a series of great martyrs who re- mained faithful in the face of persecution by political power - St. John Fisher and St. Thomas More, St. John the Baptist, SS. Peter and Paul, and the First Martyrs of the Church of Rome. Culminating on Inde- pendence Day, this special period of prayer, study, catechesis, and public action will emphasize both our Christian and American heritage of liberty. Dioceses and parishes around the country have scheduled spe- cial events that support a great national campaign of teaching and witness for religious liberty.

PRAYER OF THE WEEK

O God, who through the grace of adoption chose us to

be children of light, grant, we pray, that we may not be

wrapped in the darkness of error but always be seen to stand in the bright light of truth. Through our Lord Je-

sus Christ, your Son, who lives and reigns with you in

the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ev-

er.

Reflection question: Am I someone whom others

see as standing in the bright light of truth?

A PRAYER FOR OUR NATION Gracious and loving God, we come to you in humble prayer for the United States of America.

Bless our President. Give him wisdom and strength to serve the American people and lead our country in ways that are pleasing to you.

Bless our Congress. Instill in them knowledge and understanding to enact laws that protect the sancity of life - from the unborn to the elderly; and promote the good of all people.

Bless the people of the United States. Make us aware of our responsibility as citizens to uphold the principles of life, liberty, justice, and equality. Send your Holy Spirit upon our beloved country. Make us people of faith in time of uncertainty. Make us people of hope in times of trouble. Make us people of compassion with those who are less fortunate. Make us people of peace in our homes, our communities, our country, and our world.

We ask this through Jesus Christ, Our Lord and Savior. Amen.
