President’s Messageby Allan Gross

Membership Reportby Mary Gross

The Healey international meet next year is calledOpen Roads 2002. If you attended the last two AHCOfunctions you had a chance to see THE OPEN ROADSOfOregon. I just checked my odometer this morning andwas surprised that I had logged 1126 miles of fun in thecountryside of Oregon the past two weeks. The initialmileage came from attending the Rendezvous 2001 inGrants Pass. It was great fun, a lot of socializing, jetboat river trip, showing off our cars, and a fun rally. Itwas just a good old fashion Healey gathering that allenjoyed. Thanks to Bill and his able volunteers. It was aprofitable adventure for our club as you will read else-where in the newsletter. The last miles were logged at our August Club meet-ing. The Monaco’s and Gowan’s entertained us with afun rally (at least for the participants, I think Tom andChuck were wondering who the drivers and navigatorswere). It ended at the Monaco’s in Seaside with a verytasty Hawaiian meal. We even had entertainment. Justask Leon to demonstrate his dancing. It was fun to beable to see such beautiful sites… makes driving theHealey special.Nomination Update and Officer Elections Update.

I was informed after the meeting that our nomi-nation process must span two meetings before the elec-tion. Therefore, nominations will still be taken at theSeptember meeting with the election occurring at theOctober meeting. The ballot is filling out nicely (cur-rent nominations are shown elsewhere in this news-letter) but we still need volunteers for a number ofofficer positions. Nominations can be taken and arewelcomed for all positions. Watch for the 2002 ballotin the October newsletter.

I wish you the very best of Healey motoring Allan

General Membership MeetingAugust 11, 2001 Minutes

by Stephanie HellicksonThe meeting was brought to order by president AllanGross at 5:12 p.m. at the Seaside vacation home of Tomand Skip Monaco. Allan first introduced Margo Healey, who is visiting from England. She was an honored guestat Rendezvous 2001. He then thanked Tom Monacoand Chuck Gowan for the great rally and Skip Monacoand Barbara Gowan for the woderful food preparation. There were no additions or corrections to the July min-utes and they were approved as published.

Vice president, Bill Massey, reported that we were ableto get rid of several un-needed items at the Rendezvous2001 auction.

Treasurer, Gary Jackson, was not present but Bill Massey, filling in, reported that he has been paying the club billsbut did not have a statement of account for us.

Membership, Mary Gross, had nothing to report.

Regalia, Pat Barron, was not present but Allan reportedthat we were able to sell most of the Rendezvous regaliaitems and hopefully will sell the rest at the ABFM. Thetotal gain to the club from sales at the meet was $2368.

Activities, Leon Hart, reported that the September meetwould be in conjunction with the All British Field Meeton Labor Day weekend. The October meet will be hostedby Bob and Carla Bollinger with more information tocome and the November meet will be hosted by Bill andPat Bolton, which will be a tech session and a craftssession for the ladies. December will, of course, be theChristmas Party.

Editor, Terry Hellickson, reported that, due to the earlydate of the next meet, he will need all submissions tothe newsletter by Monday the 16th.

Advertising, Tammy Auburg, asked that people contacther if they have any possible advertising contacts.

Club Coordinator, Bill Bolton, reported the results ofRendezvous 2001. We had based our break even pointat 100 registrations. We had 185 registrants and about100 cars. The net profit for the club, after all expenseshad been paid, was a very respectable $4090. That does

not include profits from Regalia. Bill also summarizeda report from John Trfari for the 2002 Tahoe meet. Thereare already 380 registrations as of August 9th and 300of the 400 rooms in the Horizon Hotel are already gone. These are the $89 rooms. They are negotiating for an-other 300 rooms at other hotels, but the room cost willlikely be $115 - $135 a night versus the $89 a night roomsat the Horizon. You cannot get a room without yourregistration number, so if members are planning on at-tending this meet they need to register very soon. Thereis RV parking at the Horizon Hotel, but there are no hook-ups. There is a RV park about two miles away withhook-ups. They are expecting 28 guest including theHealey family members and hopefully Pat Moss. Therewill be an autocross held at the Tahoe airport. Therewill be open nights for dinner on Monday and Wednes-day and clubs will be asked to host dinner for one ormore of the guests on those nights. David Nock reportedthat people have been failing to mark the events theywill be interested in on the registration forms. Becauseof the large number of people planning to attend someof these activities, they may have to limit the number ofparticipants, so it is important to mark what you are in-terested in. Concours will also have to be limited to 25to 50 cars. The final number has not yet been decided.

Allan thanked Bill and all his committee people for theincredible job they did organizing the Rendezvous 2001.They got a big, well deserved round of applause. Manycomments were heard about the easy laid back fun andthe great boat ride. Bill reported that Reid Trummelwrote to congratulate us on the successful meet and tosay he thinks that the simpler schedule with more timefor tire kicking in the parking lot is the way to go.

For the ABFM, Gary Meyer reported that everything ispretty well organized, Doug Auburg has the registrationwell under control and the popular choice ballot countershave been selected and notified. The club will provideBBQ tickets to the ballot counters. These tickets willcost the club $10 rather than the regular cost of $15. Wewill need 30 tickets and the cost will be deducted fromour profits from the meet. This year the swap meetspaces will be on a first come basis rather than assignedas before, except for a few commercial vendors whocome every year. The gate will not be locked so it should

Page 8: 2001 September Healey Northwest

8 Healey Northwest u September 2001

be possible to set up on Saturday night.

Under new business, the first item on the agenda wasthe 2002 NW Meet which will be hosted by the Oregonclub. We need to make a decision as to where the eventwill take place so we can announce it at this year’s NWMeet. Some suggestions included Kahneetah, Inn at theMountain in Welches, Sun River, Eagle Crest, Inn at theSeventh Mountain in Bend and Hood River. Consider-ations will include room availability and cost. Allanwill check into some costs and we will try to make adecision at the September meeting. Norm Simpson vol-unteered to chair the event. Thank you Norm!

Nominations were the second item on the agenda. Nomi-nations were opened and results were as follows.President: Bill MasseyVice President: Larry EmersonSecretary: no nominations yetTreasurer: Leon Hart, Pat BoltonMembership: Norm Simpson, Skip MonacoClub Coordinator: Bill BoltonEditor: Terry HellicksonRegalia: no nominations yetAdvertising: Gary and Dee Meyer

Nominations will continue at the September meetingand elections will take place in October.

In a similar vein Tom Monaco announced that after fiveyears on the ABFM committee, he will not be doing sofor next year. We have until February to select a newrepresentative for this important position. Tom is will-ing to train that person.

The last item to be discussed under new business wasreported by Bill Bolton. A Rendezvous Council has beenformed to make the decisions for where and when andwho will be responsible for what on future Rendezvousevents. The idea is to spread the responsibilities out overmore clubs. Rendezvous 2003 is still not decided. KarenMorrison of the British Columbia Club has volunteeredto chair the 2003 event. It has been decided that it willbe in the Eureka area of California. Bill has volunteeredto work with Karen to find a venue for the meet. Otherclubs will be asked to help with different aspects of themeet. There will be another Council meeting at the 2002meet to update on 2003 and talk about 2004 and 2005.2005 might conceivably be combined with the Texas

Roundup hosted by the North Texas Club. The Councilmeetings are open meetings and anyone is welcome, buteach club is expected to have an official representativeat the meeting speaking for that club. We had approvedsending a rep to this at the beginning of this year andmust now make sure we identify a person for this re-sponsibility before the Tahoe meet. Bill also asked per-mission to send out the financial results of the 2001 meetto the various clubs to show them the possible profitsthat can be made by hosting a Rendezvous meet. Thiswould go to the president of the clubs.

The meeting was adjourned a 6:04 p.m.

Editor’s Note

Due to the short interval between the August and Sep-tember meetings, coverage of the August meet will bedelayed until September. I apologize for this delay andpromise not to do it again until next year.

Healey Rendezvous 2001 is now in the record books. But those who attended will remember this event formany years to come. Enough activities to keep bore-dom far away, there still was plenty of time to kick back, relax and socialize, all with our Healeys providing acolorful backdrop. Rendezvous 2001 was a well-orga-nized, enjoyable event from any angle.

Arrival on Monday greeted a weary traveler with a grati-fying sight. The parking lot of the Riverside Inn in GrantsPass was lined with Healeys on both sides, the entirelength. All together, about 100 Sprites, 100-4s, -6s and3000s, along with a couple of Jensen Healeys gatheredto enjoy the camaraderie. New and old acquaintanceswere found at the icebreaker social on the lower deck ofthe Riverside Inn restaurant. Jet boats returned fromdown-river during the socializing, whetting expectationsof Tuesday morning. All too soon it was time for all to

go their separate ways for dinner and a night’s rest.

Tuesday dawned clear and warm, the Rogue River beck-oning. After breakfast the line at the jet boat dock be-gan to form. Anticipation on all faces, the boats pulledup to the dock and began loading. Two full boats ofintrepid Healey enthusiasts charged off down-river amidcurtains of spray and screeches of delight. Hellgate can-yon provides spectacular scenery as the jet boats negoti-ate rapids, shallows and eddies, along with some spinsand more spray, en-route to the BBQ lunch feast. Afterlunch everyone re-boarded the boats for the wild and, depending on seating location, wet trip up-river to theInn. No one was left wanting. Then it was back to theHealey Social Lot for more socializing into the evening.Concours judging had been going on all day and wasstill underway upon returning to the Lot. Judging would

continue Wednesday during the rally. It takes a toughhide to undergo, or mete out, that kind of scrutiny. Earlyin the evening a BBQ broke out among the RV campers

at Schroeder Park where the food and frivolity lastedwell after dark. Does anyone know what happened toGary Meyer’s tongs?

Wednesday morning began clear and warmer, with rallyparticipants lining up before 8AM in anticipation of anearly start. Earl and Jo Ann Yarnal seem to have a devi-ous streak. They designed the rally to run simultaneouslyin opposing directions and with different instructions, making it unwise to follow the preceding car. The rallyroute took participants to Jacksonville, Wolf Creek,Galice, historical sights and past much spectacular scen-ery. But it was hot and all Rally Rounders were grateful

to return to the Inn forlibations and more so-cializing.

After some rest and re-freshment severalgroups headed out fordinner while othersstayed planted. Bar andfood tables opened inthe parking lot at 6PM.Restaurant goers re-turned, found refresh-

ments and seats and the auction began at 8. Many inter-esting items were auctioned off, including a banner from

John Sprinzel’s former business, Speedwell PerformanceConversions, and one of Geoff Healey’s rally pins, do-nated by Margo Healey. There was spirited bidding andthose who were successful came away with many prizesdifficult, or impossible, to find elsewhere.

Placement of cars for the popularchoice show Thursday morning atSchroeder Park began shortly before9AM. The entire lawn area becameoverwhelmed by a vast collection ofHealeys. Examples ran the gamutfrom spectacular museum pieces tobattle scarred road warriors to all-outthoroughbred racecars, but their own-

ers all loved themdearly. After muchdeliberation, ballot-ing, picture takingand socializing thecatered BBQ started.A choice of ribs orchicken, potatoes, corn on the cob, sal-ads, fruit and rollsguaranteed no onewould go hungry, and no one did. Andfor those not yetstuffed, there was achoice of peach orberry cobbler for

dessert.

After the feast the popu-lar choice and rallyawards were presented, followed by recognitionof the Healey Rendez-vous 2001 organizersand volunteers. To capoff the day’s activitiesJohn Sprinzel andMargo Healey eachgave short, entertaining, and humorous, talks re-lating their own per-spectives on racing andrallying Healeys.Thank you John and

Margo for your insightful and enjoyable recollections! All too soon the festivities came to an end. It was timeto return to the Healey Social Lot (actually, the River-side Inn parking lot, but Healeys still commanded it),more refreshments and socializing. Some good-byeswere said as some long distance travelers prepared foran evening or early morning departure.

Friday morning saw the Healey Social Lot thinning sub-stantially, but there were still small pockets of socializ-ing scattered about. Those dedicated enthusiasts holdout to the bitter end. Final farewells and ‘see you next…(year, month, or weekend…fill in the blank)’, or wher-ever our paths may cross again, were spoken as Healeyssnarled off into the forested mountains. And what wasall that socializing about? You’ll just have to attend thenext Healey function and find out!

There are a number of things one can do to make aclassic car stand out and be noticed. Washing, vacuum-ing and glass cleaner are the easiest ways. But, havingthe chrome and bright work polished can really bringout your vehicle.

I recently had the windscreen glass replaced, andwhile the frame was off of the Sprite I had the windscreensupports buffed up. Once done the rest of the cockpitlooked bland, so I looked through the club newsletterfor someone who does chrome and polishing. I sent thealuminum cockpit surround pieces out to get polishedto Star Bright, of Mulino, Oregon.

Wow! What a difference it made in the overall ap-pearance. I want to thank Star Bright for a job welldone, and to emphasize the value of club newsletters.Guess I’ll be getting the bumpers redone next.

Thanks, Star Brightby Walt Harrison
