It was the opening game of the tournament. Mali the hostsplayed 4-4-2 with variations. The positive aspect was the

careful distribution of passes to teammates especially throughthe wings making a balance between defence and attack. Thenegative aspect was the failure to consolidate their possessionto create scoring chances.

Liberia also played 4-4-2. They were quick to the ball andwere accurate in ball distribution and positioning but poor infinishing the attacks.

Mali played with two stoppers. They made close andsometimes loose marking according to the situation on hand.Liberia marked closely four defenders with the full support ofthe midfield players retreatimg back to create a well balanceddefence and this was spear-headed by George Weah.

Keita Seydou played brilliantly for Mali through the rightwing position creating open spaces for the strikers to move in.They spread out their game effectively from the midfield tothe extremes but their crosses were challenged by the oppos-ing defence.

Liberia played more towards the right side of the field .They sometimes attacked through the middle to create spacesfor overlapping wingers to either penetrate or swing the ballacross.

Weah fittingly got the first goal of the African Nations Cupbut his Liberian team conceded a goal three minutes fromtime to draw 1-1.

Mali only troubled Liberia on a handful of occasionsthroughout the game, but came alive late in the game asLiberia tired. The game overall was dour and uninspiring

Mali played their normal 4-4-2, looked well preparedmentally and physically.

Their system worked well being first to the ball havingmore possession most of the time. However, they failed tobreak through the robust defence of their opponent. Theycontrolled the ball well but were unsuccessful upfront. Nigeria also played their usual 4-4-2 but their midfielderstook things seriously this time and always supported theirdefensive line.

Seydou Keita & Sidibe Djibril made a good duo for Mali. Nigeria’s defence was very strong. Their marking and tack-ling were well calculated and they went hard for each ball. Mali started stronger, urged on by a 50,000 crowd in the newMarch 26 stadium. Seydou Keita caused Celestine Babayaro alot of problems, while Toure Bassala hurried the opponentsmidfield into making mistakes.

Nigeria weathered the pressure and started to win the ballin the midfield midway through the half. Julius Aghahowa, was the most dangerous Nigerian player and had the bestchance of the first half.

In the second half Mali came out firing on all cylindersand created some early chances.

Kanu linked well with Aghahowa and Tijani Babangidainjected some pace into the Nigerian attack when he came offthe bench.

Algeria played 3-5-2 with quick coverage and always at anumerical advantage against the opponent’s two strik-

ers. Nigeria played 4-2-4 with good balance. However, theysometimes lacked good support of the attack from thedefense. Algeria built their attack from the midfield by usingmostly short passes and positional changes.

The defensive organization was done by the two stoppersand the free player or libero behind. Some of the Nigerianplayers produced the best work rate though, whereas othersfailed to come back in time to fill the gaps created by them. Nigeria, looked the more assured and took control of thegame early.

Striker Julius Aghahowa, Scored the only goal of the gamejust before halftime when he skipped down the right flank, cut inside three defenders and fired a low shot inside the nearpost.

Saifi upstaged the flashy Nigerians with his own deftflicks and surging runs for a period late in the first half and inthe 34th minute his powerful shot flashed past a post. However, after the break Nigeria came out with more confi-dence.

Few months earlier, the two teams were playing in the samegroup for the world cup qualifiers of Korea/Japan.

Nigeria won the ticket of the group after a tense competition.Liberia was hopping to take their revenge and kick theiropponents out of the tournament.

In the end, it was Weah who announced hanging his bootsoff after the Super Eagles faded all his dreams. Liberia played4-4-2 concentrating more on attack as they had no otherchoice. They were moving forward all the time and tried tocontrol the pace of the game, pressuring their opponents inthe midfield area and using the flanks from the counterattacks. They were not able to deal with the crossing ballsinside their box, which helped the Super Eagles to score. Theychanged positions all the time, confusing the Nigeriandefense.

Nigeria with their classical 4-4-2 used their experience incontrolling Liberia’s passionate style. Okocha tried to slowdown the pace of the game. Kanu dropped a lot in the middleto escape his marker leaving Aghahowa alone in front, whichlifted off the pressure from Liberia’s defense. They were dangerous when they used the flanks. Theirdefense was alert and balanced.

Liberia wanted to win this match after the lost 3 points ofthe opening game when the hosts scored in the last min-

utes. But, again bad luck struck Weah and his team mates asKraouche leveled the score 2/2 from a powerfut shot in thelast minute.

Liberia the unlucky team will have to play Nigeria in thefinal phase of the group with only 2 points in hand instead of6. Algeria played 3-5-2 with a libro marking the opponent’sstrikers tightly.

They used long and short passes relying on their skillful Saifiwho succeeded in opening up spaces in Liberia’s defense. They were slow in converting from attack to defense, some-thing which created gaps in their defense. Liberia played 4-2-4 with variations switching to 4-4-2 afterleading the game. They were fast with the ball and penetrat-ed through the middle using short passes. They always losetheir concentration in the last minutes of the gam.

The hosts won the match, which they could not afford tolose under any circumstances. A defeat or even a draw

would have been catastrophic. The pressure of a whole country’s expectations was a

heavy burden on Mali players and officials who were con-vinced that they had no other choice but to book their ticketto the next round.

Mali playing 4-1-4-1 with Bagayoko alone in the attackkept the Algerian defenders busy with his stamina and pow-erful physical shape. Seydou Keita and Touré Bassala whowas not marked by the Algerians made all what they wantedwith the ball.

Mali made good use of the empty spaces and looked sharpin the counter attacks.

Algeria were obliged to pull back to face the pressure ofthe hosts, they always left 3 players in the defense againstonly one striker from Mali, which made them lose balance inthe midfield.

The Bafana Bafana under their Portuguesecoach played a4-3-3 formation. They kept the ball as long as possible

using 5 players in the midfield. They controlled the pace ofthe match using long and short passes, they attacked by usingthe width of the field. They created some scoring chances butfailed to store. They built their attack from the defensethrough the midfield but gave the opponents time to reorga-nize in front of them. They needed to put more players intoattack but never had the right judgement when to do so.

The balance between their defense and attack was accept-able. Nomvete was a good assist to McCarthy when he par-ticipated in the second half.

Burkina playing 3-5-2 made good depth in defense andmarked the South African forwards strictly putting themalways under pressure.

Moumouni Dagano looked dangerous and could havecaught South Africa 10 minutes before half-time with a quickcounter attack.

They lacked collective organization and key players whocould dictate the rhythm in the midfield. They played a toughgame and were at some stages violent towards their oppo-nents.

South Africa drew 0-0 with Ghana. The South African mid-fielder Quinton Fortune had an opportunity to score in the

35th minute when South Africa was awarded a penalty, but itwas saved by the Ghanaian goalkeeper Sammy Adjei.

South Africa played a 4-3-3 system with Zuma alwayssupporting the attack while the Black Stars played a 4-4-2 cre-ation with both Essien and Abdul Razak controlling the mid-field area with their notable efforts. Ghana created a gooddepth in their defensive line but lacked this depth in theirfront line. South Africa used the flanks through Zuma andFortune but lacked the support from their defensive and mid-field players.

Buckley seemed to be the key figure for South Africa butwas not able to keep his high technique for the whole 90 mins.Ghana played a zonal defense but were sometimes late intheir covering.

Deficiency of teamwork & incompatibility between theBafana Bafana strikers missed out their scoring opportunities.

The Black stars held the Atlas lions to a goalless draw, theyplayed a 4-4-2 system giving more attention to their

defensive organization, they played with a sweeper in thesecond half. There was some good technical and physical dis-plays of skills from both sides, but also a lot of nervousness, something that led to poor finishing and clean net for bothsides.

Ghana varied short accurate passes with good mobilitymoving in groups to penetrate their opponents lines, but asthese were the aspects of their midfield, they lacked goodcommunication to their attacking players.

The Moroccans, with good positioning, used the spacesand the flanks. They controlled the tempo of the game mostof the time playing with short passes.

They lacked the last touch, as they did not put enoughpressure on the Black Stars defenders. Chippo was playingfree in the middle.

The experienced Naybet led his defense in a stylish man-ner and turned down all the Duah, Abdul Razak twin work.

Hichem Zerouali delivered the three points for Moroccobut after a tough performance from their opponents.

The Atlas lions played with their usual 4-4-2 formation, whileBurkina Faso showed a lot of courage with their 3-4-3 system.

Morocco played with a combination of short and longpasses, the players launched attacks from the middle to thetwo strikers who were able to escape their markers most ofthe time. The game turned in favour of Burkina, who were ledby the excelllent Belgian-based attacker Moumouni Dagano.Six minutes after Morocco’s goal, the score was 1-1 with theball, from a free kick, bouncing off the Moroccan wall and see-ing Dagano react the quickest to head home from close range.

It was an open game with both teams performing posi-tively and playing more for the attack. Burkina played withfast pace and good team-work between the midfielders andthe attackers while bad positioning among their defenderscreated a lot of gaps in the back line.

Burkina found their balance and tempo and deserved abetter fate. There were several other chances after that forboth sides, before Zerouali clinched the three points with aheader from a corner in the 85th minute.

Adramatic game especially in the dying minutes as bothteams scored 3 goals in the last 3 minutes of the match.

Burkina Faso were the better side most of the time, dominat-ing the game, with great support from more than 5 000 oftheir fans.

They played a 3-5-2, dominating the midfield , they werephysically well prepared. Isaac Boakye came off the bench tofire Ghana into the Nations Cup quarter-finals with two goalsin the dying minutes to defeat Burkina Faso 2-1 in a dramaticfinish to their group-deciding encounter . The match had been heading for goalless draw until BurkinaFaso's striker Amadou Toure curled a perfect free-kick overGhana's defence with eight minutes left. That set Burkina on course for a quarter-final place but in thefinal minute of the game Boakye latched on to a cross in themiddle of the penalty area and blasted the ball home. With South Africa beating Morocco, a draw would not havebeen enough for either team to qualify but in the secondminute of injury time Boakye again found himself unmarkedin the box and fired a powerful strike into the roof of the net. Until the first goal it had been a poor quality game with nei-ther side looking capable of creating any clear-cut chances, letalone scoring.

With seven minutes to go in the first period, Burkina Fasohad a flurry of half-chances. First a long-range shot from cap-tain Oumar Barro was well tipped round the post. From the resulting corner, Mady Panandetiguiri turned wellin the penalty area but shot wide and then Narcisse Yameogoblasted another long-range strike just wide.

In the last minute of the first half, Burkina's Moumoni BeliDagano should have done better when he headed straight atthe goalkeeper from a couple of yards and then substituteAlassane Ouedraogo, who came on for Barro after 39 min-utes, headed wide while unmarked.

Ghana looked to be better organized. The players movescollectively and did not allow many spaces in their half. 4-4-2system of the black stars made their mission easier, while,Burkina suffered a lot of gaps in their defensive line andlooked to be very tensed during the game due to their out-numbering fans.

South Africa, a World Cup finalist, were held to goallessdraws in their first two matches. Italian based Nomvete

was the man of the match as he set up South Africa's first twogoals before scoring the third himself.

The two teams adopted 4-4-2 system with South Africamaking good use of the flanks and concentrating in attackwhich gave their opponents many chances to equalize buttheir strikers missed all the chances beside the marvelousresponse by the Bafana goal-keeper Vonk who saved his teamin many occasions, But Vonk could do little about RachidBenmahmoud's penalty after Zuma brought down AdilRamzi in the penalty area.

Nomvete provided the first goal 10 minutes with a drib-bling run that saw him cut into the Moroccan defence beforecrossing for McCarthy to shoot from close range.Zuma scored the second from a good follow and Nomvetesecured the third.

McCarthy along with Zuma & Nomvete was the danger-ous triangle who gave the Moroccans a hard time as theywere alert and co-operative.

Morocco insisted to penetrate through the middle but didnot make use of any of their chances due to the poor perfor-mance of their strikers in-front of the goal.

Morocco was eliminated following a dramatic late win forGhana against Burkina Faso in Mopti in the other groupgame.

The African champs started defending their title against theDemocratic republic of Congo. They knew that they were

favorites and started their game with a lot of determination. Cameroon who looked very organized with their good tacticsand positioning inside the pitch adopted a 3-5-2 system. Theypenetrated from the middle, using the wings and the diago-nal movements of their strikers M’Boma & Eto’o to createspaces for the midfielders in the opponent’s defense. Songwho always covered the two stoppers led the defence. Asuperb long-range shot by striker Patrick Mboma gaveCameroon a deserved win.

RD Congo playing with the classical 4-4-2 system seemedto be a team to respect. They succeeded to close the rangebetween their lines and they were accurate at their passes. They were physically well prepared. Their two strikersShabani Nonda & Lomana Treso Lua- pierced the Cameroondefense many times.

Cameroon perfectly switched from attack to defense. Theywere able to fill all the spaces of the pitch with good stamina.DR Congo used many passes in the midfield, which sloweddown their attacking moves. They built their attack from thedefense.

Defending champions Cameroon became the first side togo through to the quarter-finals of the African Nations

Cup finals thanks to a narrow 1-0 win over Cote d’Ivoire. The Ivorians controlled the match with their good positioningin the midfield.

Cameroon’s goalkeeper Boukar Alioum kept them in con-tention before Mboma`s late finish. Alioum made a spectacu-lar one-handed save to deny Ivorian midfielder Aliou SibiBadra 15 minutes from time.

There were variations in the game, effort, inspiration, pleasing tactical moves based on good co-ordenation betweenthe different sectors of each team.

The harmony between M’Boma and Eto’o and goodswitching of their positions gave the Ivories hard time andcreated some gaps in their defence.

Cote d’Ivoire created several other opportunities butcould not finish. Poor timing from goalkeeper Losseni Konateallowed Mboma a simple close-in header from a corner. Both teams played 3-5-2 with Cameroon showing a great abil-ity in converting from defense to attack and vice versa.

The two neighbors from West Africa Togo and Coted’Ivoire drew 0-0 in a match in which the Ivorians had the

upper hand most of the time. Cote d’Ivoire looked to be thebetter side and were very close to their first 3 points but alltheir attempts were denied by Togo goalkeeper Kossi Agassa. Agassa, who plays his club football in the Cote d’Ivoire withAfrica Sports, frustrated the 1992 champions, and looked tobe quite experienced with the Ivories tricks.

Cote d’Ivoire, with only one locally-based player in theirstarting line-up, were looking for a good start to erase unhap-py memories of their last Nations Cup outing in Ghana andNigeria. Cote d’Ivoire started the match with a 3-4-3 creationwith an attacking manner, while Togo played the classic 4-4-2. Cote d’Ivoire superiority was clearly evident. Bridging allthe spaces, using the flanks, pressuring all over the pitch, theywere in a very good shape technically and physically butcould not make use of the chances they had. Togo played azonal defense and tried to mark Ivories strikers while usingcounter attacks especially in the first minutes of the secondhalf. The Elephants then retook control but Agassa kept get-ting in their way.

Democratic Republic of Congo and Togo produced a 0-0draw after a poor game from both teams.

Both sides looked for their first goal as they played a 3-5-2system with more concentration in defence.

D.R. Congo looked disjointed. The midfielders supportedtheir strikers on some occasions but were not accurate tomake use of any of their chances.

Togo played a man to man system and counted on thecounter attacks with their front line trying through their help-less movements to disrupt the RDC defense but not beingable to find one another because they were so far apart.

Togo gave Congo some sticky moments later on andGerman-based defender Bakasu Essele became Congo`s mostimportant player as he always broke up supporting the attackwith no marking from RDC players. Both teams lacked inspiration and lucidity. A fruitless resultwas a fair end for both teams.

The Cote d’Ivoire were looking for a good start to eraseunhappy memories of their last Nations Cup outing in

Ghana and Nigeria. But they were held to a goalless draw bytheir smaller neighbours Togo in thanks largely to a string ofsaves by Togo goalkeeper Kossi Agassa.

Congo RD played 4-4-2 with Musasa Felix playing deepback in-front of the two stoppers which became more effectiveallowing better coverage between the stoppers and himself.Cote D’Ivoire played 3-5-4. With that support they were ableto threaten the opposing defense. Cote d’Ivoire played withan attacking fashion but the unnecessary fancy dribblingslowed down the tempo of the game.

Cote d’Ivoire defense was completely shaken by the earlyattacks from the Congolese and they started losing confidencebut some of the players never gave up. Covering was verypoor. They attacked mostly from the right flank but their fin-ishing was not accurate to deliver goals.

RD Congo’s players were in a very good condition andthis was the result of work of the team as a whole. Theirrecovery was excellent and this helped the team sustain theirrhythm.

The same scenario happened in Ghana/ Nigeria 2000,when Cameroon have had 6 points in hand and facing

Togo who were disparate for a win in the last match in thegroup.

Togo came into this match with the same situation of 2points in hand after they drew with both Cote d’Ivoire & RDCongo and looked for a winner against Cameroon who werefirst of the group. But history did not repeat itself and the cup holder’s reprisalfor themselves gave their opponents a hard lesson in footballtactics.

Despite both playing 4-4-2, there was a great difference inthe application of each team.

Tremendous speed, collective work, good positioning, variation in attack, pressurizing all over the pitch, controllingthe game tempo were the guise of the Cameroon team. Theyscored most of their goal-scoring chances. It was not M’bomaonly who was doing the job. Most of his team mates partici-pated in the scoring festival.

While lack of support, individual performance, misbal-ance between attack and defense, scarcity of determination towin were the main mode of Togo.

After a long struggle with the north Africans in the Worldcup qualifying group, Senegal had to meet again with

Egypt and Tunisia in the African Nations cup. Egypt were theone team Senegal failed to beat in their World Cup qualifying.Senegal struggled to find any composure in the first half withEgypt looking the more stylish side, but the Lions, came backstrongly in the second half to snatch a win in a tight clash.

Both teams played with a 4-4-2 system, Egyptians playinga zonal defence with good support from the midfield butlacked confidence in the attacking area. Egyptian midfielderAhmed Hassan made a great effort in linking his team’s lines.Emara the left back supported the attack on some occasions.Senegal dropped back too much in the first half but changedtactics in the second and pressured their opponents all overthe field, giving them no space. The joint action betweenDiouf & Camara troubled the Egyptian defence in the secondhalf.

Essam El Hadary pulled off a string of fine saves, the bestof which was when he reached out to push Diouf`s shot fromsix metres round the right post. But it was the goalkeeper`spoor punch from a corner that handed Senegal the goal theyhad been desperately seeking.

Le Sénégal s’évertue pour trouver sérénité et équilibre enpremière période alors que l’Egypte se réfugie dans son habituelstyle académique. their first game in the tournament with a 4-4-2 formation, more likely to be 4-5-1 with their speedy striker Lota alone inthe front line.

Zambia had a handful of chances at the end of an excitingfirst half but Tunisia’s captain & goalkeeper Chokri El Ouaerwas there for his team. The two teams kept up the torrid pacethroughout the match but both sides lacked composure infront of the goal.

Tunisia played a disciplined tactical game. They were thebetter side. Senegal secured a place in the quarter-finals thanks to agoal in the final minute. But once again Senegal failed to

stamp their authority on the match and Zambia often lookedthe better side.

Senegal’s performance mirrored their opening matchagainst Egypt, which they won with a goal in the 83rdminute, as they failed to take control in the first half and onlyreally came into the game in the second period after throwingplayers forward. This time they were not able to score untilthe last minute.

Both teams attached to the 4-4-2 system with more indi-vidual performance by Senegal faced by a collective workfrom Zambia who looked the perkier side in both. A closedgame in the first half with both teams very cautious turned toan interesting second half. Senegal passed the ball aroundwell but were not successful to make use from any of the crossballs which seemed to be the great weakness of their oppo-nents. Zambia did not use the wings and they based theirattack on penetrative passes, which were most of the timeintercepted by the Senegal defense. Zambia switched to 3-4-3 in the last minutes aiming for a winner but forgetting theirdefensive duties coast them a goal in the dying minutes.

The two World cup qualifiers came into this game with dif-ferent styles, as Senegal were granted a place in the next

round, the north Africans had no other choice but to win andwait for the result of Egypt Vs. Zambia.

The two teams applied the 4-4-2 with Senegal playingmore defensive considering their safe situation. Tunisia putall what they had into attack with total support from mid-fielders to the strikers, pressurising their opponents all overthe pitch, giving them no space. But their shooting was faultyand they were unable to utilize the chances that came theirway. Senegal’s strikers failed to pierce through and shoot ,however they made some good sideways passes. Tunisia cre-ated more opening chances mostly along the wings but thefinishing touches were badly operated.

Their attackers were sharp but could not score due to alack of concentration. Senegal’s players looked fit but playedreluctently. Tunisia’s players came into the game to win at allcosts since they knew that a draw or a loss was not enough forthem to qualify to the next round. Apart from their physicalcondition they were more committed than before and thatgave them more possession than their opponents.

Impressive game, the desire to win was notable in the per-formance of the two sides, All ingredients of football were

displayed. There were variations in the game, inspiration, effort, exemplary tactical moves, tactical institution, rapidpassing of the ball and good cooperation between the differ-ent sectors of each team, good substitution, coaches operatingpositively and over all a drama that took the breaths of thefans.

They were alike with their formation of 4-4-2, the playerswell prepared physically. Aiming for a place in the semi-final,Senegal never lacked the ambition and played with a lot ofeagerness, which at some stages turned to a total act of out-rage.

Lua Lua was doing the same work that Diouf was doingfor Senegal except that Diouf enjoyed the help from HenriCamara and Fadiga, which Lua Lua missed from his teammates. RD Congo were affected by the absence of Nonda.

The players control ball control was tremendous. Bothteams were not able to control the pace of the game, as theywere obliged to play a fast rhythm to catch up with the match.Only the good support and the understanding betweenCamara, Fadiga & Diouf devoted Senegal the win.

Abig deception for this Cameroon / Egypt duel. The twoteams were supposed to play a quality game after their

good performances in the first round considering also thereputation of the two teams .

Nothing happened. Not a single positive point to be men-tioned, nothing but calculations and more calculations…Egypt reinforced its defensive line-up more than in the othermatches playing a completely passive game. Playing their ordinary 4-4-2. Their players appeared nailedinto the pitch, not capable of taking the least initiative. Theycould not keep the ball in their possession and they neversupported the attack. They seemed as if they wanted to returnhome and leave the competition.

Cameroon playing their 3-5-2 did not look as sharp anddangerous as they used to. They were very cautious morethan what the opponents deserved. Their midfielders did notpenetrate to make use of the spaces in the Egyptian defense.A terrible percentage of missed passes in a game thatappeared to be a friendly match.M’boma scored the only goal from a corner-kick.

South Africa played 4-1-3-2. They blocked the midfieldplaying with almost six players in this part of the pitch,

which made it very difficult for the opponents to passthrough, but they were always in numerical disadvantage inthe attack playing with only McCarthy up front.

Mali played 4-4-2 but made sure they always had 3 play-ers standing by in defense. The full backs participated in theattacks through the wings.

South Africa played with two stoppers and one libro infront of the stoppers making it easier for covering one anoth-er and at the same time the front player Tinkler became thereceiver and the distributor in the defense. The Malians weremore committed in this match and made sure of the 50-50balls. It seemed like the South African players were not pre-pared psychologically for this important quarterfinal. Theyplayed as if there was going to be a return match in SouthAfrica to determine who would qualify.

Mali`s gaol came in the 60th minute by midfielder BassalaToure weaved his way through defence firing a thunderousshot past goalkeeper Hans Vonk`s outstretched arm.

In stoppage time Toure turned provider, slotting a perfect-ly weighted cross to the far post for substitute DrameCoulibaly to blast the ball into the roof of the net, sealing vic-tory and sparking a national celebration.

Nigeria played 4-4-2 with several variations. The positiveaspect was the careful distribution of passes especially

the ones to the the wings making a balance between defenseand attack. However, spaces were opened up in their defenseline, which gave the opponent good scoring chances whenthey attacked.

Ghana also played 4-4-2 , speeding up the game. Theywere quick to the ball and were accurate in ball distributionand positioning. They started to defend from the attackingthird by the two strikers in front and closing up in the middle.Nigeria’s midfield played brilliantly on the left and rightwings creating spaces for their strikers to move in and theybuilt up up the game from the middle. The Captain, Oliseh, also made great efforts to make the balance between defenseand attack.

For Ghana, Abdul Razak was the key player keeping themomentum of the game and making a good balance betweenmidfield and attack.

Just as the game appeared to be heading for extra time, asuperb long-range strike from midfielder Garba Lawal withjust 10 minutes left gave the advantage to Nigeria.

Nigeria created a host of chances but were kept at bay byvaliant defending from their modest opponents, some top-class goalkeeping from Sammy Adjei and their own poor fin-ishing.

After a tense challenge, Senegal pulled off a dramatic 2-1win in their semi-final clash against Nigeria and took

revenge from the super eagles who kicked them out of the lasttournament in Lagos.

The Senegalese looked to be more concentrating in thegame and played with passion. The Nigerian formation of 4-4-2 was faced by 5 Senegalese players in the midfield whichgave them the upper hand in the constructive zone and a badday for Okocha gave Fadiga and his mates the chance to con-trol the game.

Silly mistakes from both defenses and goalkeepers dedi-cated the draw for Nigeria and the late winner for Senegal.Salif Diao was the hero for Senegal as he scored the extra timewinner after his team had been just five minutes away fromvictory in normal time.

Pape Bouba Diop had given the Senegalese the lead in the54th minute before Nigeria grabbed an equaliser five minutesfrom the end of normal time when Julius Aghahowa capital-ized on a mix-up in the Senegal defence to slot home theequaliser. Match was full of ups and downs as the Nigerianplayers were not alert in front of their opponents Goal, missed a lot of chances despite the great effort of their strikerAghahowa. It was a bad-tempered match with three playerssent-off.

Cameroon smashed Mali's African Nations Cup dreamwith a superb performance to crash them with 3 straight

goals. In the absence of the scorer M’Boma, midfielderSalomon Olembe did a great job as he struck twice in six min-utes towards the end of the first half. Marc Vivien Foe sealedthe rout seven minutes from time.

Cameroon adopted their same system of 3-5-2. Olembe'stwo-goal stunned the crowd and inexperienced Mali players. Olembe's first goal came on 39 minutes, a gift from StrikerPius Ndiefi who was the man of the match and big surpriseby Cameroon who came from the bench as a substitute for theinjured M’Boma.

Olembe and Ndiefi combined again to deliver a first classsecond goal. One of the best tactical goals in the Tournament.Foe ended the show with the third in the late minutes.

The scoreline might have been worse for Mali if Eto’o andLauren made use of their chances before Foe end the dramawith a third goal in the dying minutes. It was obvious that theexperienced Cameron side knew how to control the pace ofthe game and cool down the Mali players infront of their fans.

Song and his teammates dominated the match in all tran-quillity. N’Diiefi speed gave stride to his team and was able touse the gap in the left side in Mali defence. Mali’s 4-4-2 sys-tem did not allow them to challenge the cup holders.Cameroon players did not give them any space to move ortime to think.

It was the final chapter for the host’s adventure but thefuture looks bright for the Mali youngsters.

It was the second time for the hosts and the Super Eagles toface each other in the tournament after a negative draw in

the group match. Nigeria lining up a second team while Mali playing with

full power. Both teams played a 4-4-2 system. Nigeria domi-nated the midfield with varieties of long and short passes andgood support from the defense. They switched to 4-3-3 whenthe ball was in their possession and used the flanks.Babangida and Ikpeba made many crosses into Mali’s boxcreating many dangerous chances from which Ayegbeni wasable to snatch a goal.

The captain Oliseh was impressive, Playing as a liberobuiding the attack from the midfield when they were in con-trol. Mali concentrated on Seydou Keita who was not able todeliver his effective passes as he was well marked by theNigerian defense.

They kept the ball for too long, could not find their way tothe Nigerian goal.

At last, the “Indomitable lions” wereable to keep their title & add to their

profile a new continental trophy toequalize the number of Egypt andGhana as the most crowned winningwinning team of the African cup ofNations. Four times for each.

It is also Cameroon who won the titletwice in a row after Egypt and Ghana . As they were able to keep the old cupforever in Ghana/Nigeria 2000, they list-ed their names as the first winner of thenew cup in this millenium. They provedto deserve CAF naming them Africanteam of the century.

An excellent end for the competition, with the best two teams playing the finalmatch, but the better team throughoutthe whole competition was finally ableto raise the trophy of the 23rd Africancup of nations.

The two teams played their classicalgame, playing technical football, full ofvariations, and with an excellent inter-pretation of tactics making the game apleasure to watch. The match was bal-anced and the two teams took turns incontrolling the game not giving muchtime to the opponent to take any initia-tives. Cameroon had a couple of goodchances to seal the outcome of the matchespecially through N’Diefi and Eto.

While El Hadji Diouf excited thecrowds with his superb individual skillscausing trouble for Song and his teammates all the time. Both teams lookedsolid and showed a great deal of deter-mination.

The penalty shoot outs where the final

chapter in this dramatic scene. Boukaragain dedicated his Nation the Africantrophy.

At the end, there was joy and cele-brations on the side of Cameroon while, deception and sadness on the side of

Senegal. But the two teams were reallythe best of the tournament
