As the title already reveals, what you will find here will all be quiteÞ“straight forward”. Even the subjects of my choise are in a way straight forward, but at the same time they give you a glamorous and extraordinairy feeling.

The concept on which this all is based on is that it should look as if every piece was just hand written and typed, ripped out of a magazine and stuck together.

Round, staight and simple are the keywords that characterize my Self portrait. And as a Self Portrait should do this straight forward booklet shows the head lines of my personality and being.

Type writing, neat scholar-style handwriting, funny computer letters and a messy graffiti style mixed together, printed on the paper that I used only a year ago to do my chemistry calculations on. The calm colour use and a serious amount of personality mixed in with this created this simple, but more in store, booklet.

The subjects and people you’ll find in this booklet reflect me, the way I think about things and what my personal tastes are. My love for chaos, peace and simplicity together.

STRAIGTH FORWARD.

It’s all about things: ‘ding’ by Richard Hutton

This very straight to the point design with no-nonsense looks meets almost every thing a good design should have. This timeless concept, combining a chair and table in one object was already used in the 19th century (see middle picture). The way it looks doesn’t immediately makes you think it is a chair or a table. But because of this you shouldn’t question the abilities of this piece of furniture: it is absolutely 200% functional; as a chair and as a side-table.

Because of the simplicity in material - deal - , form - simple and rectangular - and colour - natural deal wood - a very multi-functional but beautiful look is created. This also makes it a very usable and accesible object. It’s looks make you feel comfortable with it immediately because they are so neutral and natural.

To me a piece of furniture like this would be a very handy thing and probably frequently used because it can be used in many ways: from bookshelf to chair and from side-table to bench. Because of it’s double or triple function the value of this hybrid is much higher than just a design stool or just a design table.

“It is a chair.. Oh! No, it’s a table!!” will probably be one of the first things on your mind when looking at the ‘ding’ hybrid by Richard Hutton

19th century hybrid table, stool and steps in one, England

‘allievo e scolaro’ by Konstantin 0rcic for Montina, 2000.

Adaptation, that’s the word!

Interesting objects those hybrids, combining two pieces of furniture in one. They are transformers you can use in twoÞor more different ways without changing mode, the definition of a hybrid. The sort of hybrids I’ve looked at are chairs that have adapted to reading, writing and/or studying purposes.

The object of my choise is a hybrid tableÞstool called ‘ding’ and is designed by Richard Hutton.

This very functional product of adding one to another and creating, not something new, but something extra. The transformstion of two in one, creating a hybrid. Forming a sort of a momentaryÞ seat for working and studying which might induce to change seat habits

The men behind the design

Ronan and Erwan Bouroullec, born in Brittany in 1971 and 1976 respectively, live and work in St. Denis, Paris. The two brothers are considered the rising stars of European design. They came to the world’s attention through a number of exhibitions and received the Grand Prix du Jury International at the Paris furniture fair in 1998, the best new designer award in New York in 1999, and a compasso d’oro nomination for the ‘spring’ chair in 2001 in Milan.

Ronan, the elder first started his activity as designer, later Erwan assisted him. Everything the Bouroullecs designed after 1998 went out under both names, but some of their projects were signed individually. Major clients of the Bouroullecs are: Cappellini, Ligne Roset, Habitat, Domeau & Peres, Authentics, Eandw, Magis, Vitra and Galerie Kreo.

They designed the interior for Issey Miyake’s APOC shop in paris. They have had their own exhibitions at the Miyake design studio! Gallery in Tokyo and Galerie Kreo in Paris in 2001, at the London design museum in 2002 and at the moment they have just finished curating a big exhibition, again, at the design museum in London.

Real - life

Their designs are surprising in their obviousness and their functions. The objects remain what they are and at the same time offer a new aesthetic experience.

We are interested in reality, in everyday things,Þ says Erwan, the darker-haired one with green eyes. Maybe thatÞs why we’ve situated us here in Saint Denis, Paris, because people are really strange, itÞs messy and there is a lot of different behaviour here. ThereÞs a lot to look at.

These young and already famous designers have got a wonderful style and great view on society which shows in their designs. They inspire others to look at reality in another way.

Bedtime stories

Do you remember the time that you were just a little kid when your mum, sitting on the side of your bed when you had to go to sleep would read you one chapter from ‘Jip en Janneke’ before you would fall a sleep.

I remember even better now, after I visited the exhibition GetekendÞ Fiep Westendorp at the Kunsthal.

This honourable and colourful exhi-bition on Fiep Westendorp’s famous illustrations has got it all.

Agoodlookingexhbition

The exhibition

Mummy, Daddy, the kids and maybe even Grandma, at Getekend Fiep Westendorp they’re all welcome. The colourful exhibition, red, blue, green and yellow exposes Fiep’s work, her history, her cooperation with Annie M.G. Schmidt and everything else.

The design of the exhibition, coordinated by Charlotte van Lingen, is very accesible for children: the familiar drawings are exposed on the knee-high yellow rectanglesIn the higher metal squares parents can admire the history of Fiep, her school period, family and friends. On one side of the exhibition the children can sit down and read their favourite Annie M.G. Schmidt book. On the other side Jip en Janneke products are on display.

There are three ‘walls’ that separate the exhibited from the stairs and other exits. This creates a safe environment for the children that walk around. All in all this is a very catchy exhibition that reaches all his set goals.

Dancing Pschorr after bombardements -another work by Vermaas-

Too old to be true

The old Luxor theatre has been up and running since December 22, 1917. Wiith this the Luxor is the seventeenth cinema theatre in Rotterdam. The theatre is built by architect P. Vermaas. This architect has also built the famous Pschorr dancing at the Coolvest.

The theatre was in German hands during the world war. And survived the war unlike a lot of other buildings. After this all was over the theatre was patched up a bit and re-opened.

In the early seventies several big structural alterations are applied, there is only little left of what the looks of the building once were. The way the Luxor looks now is stunning; the original shaping of the façade, the black bricks, the entrance doors, the colour use in the interior and the overal ‘different’ and round looks of the theatre. The round shapes are fascinating, especially when you imagine that this is a design from the seventies, and extremely modern in its own way. I love the way this building looks.

Rabbits resting in the grass

Not a sign that says what they really are, the only thing that you immediately see is that they are big and in an odd place.

Whether or not this group has a name is a big question but the man who gave birth to this extraordinairy threesome is Tom Klaassen.

These ‘pets’ are a gift from the Kunsthal and the sculptor to the city of Rotterdam. They are situated just next to the Rotterdam Natuurmuseum and on the bottom of the dike on the left side of the Kunsthal.

These bronze creatures gave me the feeling of happyness and peace when I first saw them. The threesome is watching everything that happens in the world arround them so peacefully from their nice green lawn. I wish I can do that some day, just sit and stare...

No place like home for the holidays

I am a home sweet home characture, just like a pidgeon, and therefore I always love my holidays best when I can just be at home and just be me. I love to sleep, do nothing and sleep when I don’t have to do anything.

On the right you can see me with my best friend, Barbara, infront of a house. I chose the winter background because my birthday is on the second day of the new year and therefore always falls in the Christmas break - meaning snow, ice and bitter cold -. On the day I was born it snowed aswell.

Another thing that this picture represents is that I don’t like being somewhere else but home, together with my best friends.... Having a wonderful and warm time, any time!

Goingoutanotherway

My way

My weekends are probably unlike the weekends of ÞrealÞ students quite calm. I donÞt like going out too much and need my rest. If I go out to a place it will be a skate indoor park in St. Niklaas, Belgium.

Together with the New Breed Riders crew, a BMX crew from Vlissingen, and my boyfriend Enssan I can have a whole lot of fun over there in Belgium. Below you see a picture of us having a good time at the park. On the top of the picture you see Vladdie doing a double peg stall and in front you see Enssan and myself just as in a real picture.

I have learned a lot from making this booklet. I know now that it is difficult to keep a layout consistent when you use a lot of different sized pictures. It is difficult to make a page look interesting when you can only use pictures with one color tone as basis.

But fortunately it all worked out. The colours I used cold and warm, familiar and unfamiliar things, styles and types mixed together have formed something together that makes me feel happy about the work I delivered, it took a lot of my time but it was absolutely worth it all. I am looking forward to do something like this again, I hoped that you’ve enjoyed reading and looking.

Satisfaction

Actually all you want is a need for satisfaction. What I had in mind for the Self Portrait, what I wanted, the need that I had has been satisfied. The way that my ideas have been visualized in this booklet, is almost exactly the way that I wanted them to be visualized.

The realisation of my ideas weren’t always easy because I am very critical on my self and because I knew what I wanted it to become. Not every aspect came out the way I wanted because it simply wasn’t possible with the programs used.
