United Way is addressing the root causes of issuesin Northeast Florida.

ISSUE:• In Duval County, 29% of 9th graders do not graduate high school.• High school dropouts earn approximately $9,634 less per year

than high school graduates and are ill-equipped to entertoday’s competitive workforce.

• On average, households headed by a high school graduateaccrue ten times more wealth and have better odds ofweathering an unexpected financial crisis than those headedby a high school dropout.

SOLUTION:• Led by United Way, Full Service Schools brings together community resources, neighbors and schools to promote the health

and well-being of students, their families, and neighborhood residents.• Achievers For Life, a strategy to address the problem of dropping out of school, was implemented in Arlington in October 2007,

expanded to Northwestern and Matthew Gilbert middle schools in the 2008-2009 school year, to J.E.B. Stuart and JeffersonDavis Middle Schools in 2009-2010, and to Eugene J. Butler in 2011 and Highlands and Ribault in 2012.

IMPACT:• More than 52,000 people were served through Full Service Schools last year.• 760 families were served through Achievers For Life last year. Participating students had 25% fewer absences,

20% improvement in GPA, and 26% fewer math and English failures than a comparison group.

111,283 Duval County residents called our 2-1-1 helpline for information and referrals including crisis andemergency financial assistance.

10,474 Duval County households received free tax preparation assistance resulting in nearly $15 million dollars inrefunds to the Duval County economy.

Education - Mariah’s story

UNITED WAY OF NORTHEAST FLORIDA IS CREATING POSITIVE, SUSTAINABLE CHANGE BYFOCUSING ON THE BUILDING BLOCKS OF A BETTER LIFE: EDUCATION, INCOME AND HEALTH. Duval County

Before being referred to United Way’s Achievers For Life (AFL) program, Mariah wasstruggling with academics and class attendance. Things turned around, Mariah’s GPAimproved and attending class was no longer a problem. She completed the 7th gradeand earned a scholarship, which will help pay for college. Now a role model to others,Mariah continues to excel in extracurricular activities like cheerleading and track.

success. Children are born learning and research has shown thatchildren who receive high-quality child care are more likely tosucceed academically, socially, and financially later in life.

• Between 23 and 29 % of Northeast Florida children are behindtheir fellow students before they even start school.

SOLUTION:• Research has shown that for every $1 invested in early childhood

learning programs returns approximately $17 to the community.• United Way’s Success By 6 initiative is increasing access to

high-quality early learning activities in Clay County.• United Way partners to educate parents about the role they play in their child’s development using Born Learning materials

developed by United Way of America, The Ad Council, and Civitas.

IMPACT:• Last year, more than 2,500 parents learned how to turn everyday activities into learning moments with their preschool children.• Children who completed the Success By 6 program had a 19 percentage point increase in school readiness

• Children in low-income families have elementary math andreading scores that are four to five points lower.

• Children from low-income families are twice as likely to repeata grade and are 3.5 times as likely to drop out of school.

SOLUTION:

• United Way of Northeast Florida invests $4.6 million in services to help youth succeed in life.

IMPACT:

• As a community, we have increased on-time St. Johns county high school graduations by 18% since the 2004-2005 school year.
