The clamshell and grapple attachment gives this crane even more versatility.Have a large bolder on the job site and need it moved? No problem with thegrapple attachment, just clamp on to it and put it wherever you want it. With theclamshell attachment you can move dirt piles or excavate in areas where otherequipment is not suitable. You will have the opportunity to use both attachmentswhile here on this phase.

    SECTION III. PRESENTATION

    1. Learning Step / Activity 1. Demonstrate Installing a Clamshell/Grapple Attachment

Method of Instruction: DemonstrationInstructor to Student Ratio: 1:6

Time of Instruction: 15 minsMedia: Hands-on Instruction

    A. Installation of the Clamshell/Grapple attachment.

NOTE: Refer students to TM 5-3810-307-10.

    1) The crane must be leveled on its outriggers. The superstructure must beswung over the side of the crane, with the boom all the way down andcentered on the clamshell or grapple, with the hook block on the far side ofthe clamshell or grapple. The clamshell or grapple must be in the openposition.

    a) The hook block will be used for the clamshell and grapple operation.

NOTE: Ensure the holding cable is installed so the cable winds and unwindsover the top of the main drum.

    B. Installation of the hydraulic lines from the hydraulic boom hose reel.

    1) Install the first safety chain to the clamshell/grapple.

NOTE: Always use at least two people when pulling out the boom hose reel.

    2) Pull hydraulic lines from the reel to the clamshell/grapple and hook up the firstsafety chain, then slowly release the reel until the hoses are tight.

    3) Connect the second safety chain to the clamshell/grapple and attach it to thehydraulic hose.

    7/21

    7

    4) Install the hydraulic hose fittings to the clamshell/grapple hose fittings, ensuring enough slack is left in the clamshell/grapple hoses.

    5) Raise the boom to 40 degrees.

    6) Telescope the boom out and lower the hoist until the hook block is centereddirectly over the clamshell/grapple.

    7) Hoist down until you can hook the hook block to the clamshell/grapple usingthe clevis.

NOTE: If tension on the boom hose reel is released too quickly, the hoses cancause injury to personnel or damage to equipment.

    C. Review

NOTE: Conduct a check on learning and summarize the learning activity.

    2. Learning Step / Activity 2. Demonstrate Moving a Stockpile with a Clamshell/GrappleAttachment

Method of Instruction: DemonstrationInstructor to Student Ratio: 1:6

Time of Instruction: 10 minsMedia: Hands-on Instruction

    A. Clamshell/Grapple Operation

    1) Setting up the crane for operation

    2) Show and explain each control used for clamshell/grapple operations.

    a) Swing/Auxiliary Hoist Control

    b) Swing Brake Pedal

    c) Horn Button-Swing

    d) Telescope/Clamshell Control Pedal

    e) TELE/CLAMSHELL Selector Switch

    f) LIFT/MAIN Hoist Control Lever

NOTE: Refer students to TM 5-3810-307-10.

    3) Moving a Stockpile

    a) The crane must be leveled on its outriggers. The superstructure must beswung over the side of the crane or over the rear operation position withclamshell attached.

    b) Raise the boom to the desired angle (minimum of 40 degrees).

    c) The boom length is determined by the working radius used.

ii. To open the attachment, push the top pad of the Telescope/Clamshellpedal away from the operator and hold until the attachment opens.

    b) Lower open attachment

    i. Sound horn, look, and swing over the work area.

NOTE: Start and stop the swing motion slowly and smoothly to prevent theattachment from swinging excessively. Do not use the swing brake duringoperation.

ii. Lower open attachment into material by slowly engaging the mainhoist lever.

NOTE: Slack is required in the connection point of the attachment to allow theattachment to dig in. Do not drop the attachment; this can damage the crane, winch drum, or the attachment itself.

    c) Raising closed attachment

    i. To close the attachment, depress the button pad on theTelescope/Clamshell control pedal and hold until the attachment isclosed.

ii. When the attachment is fully closed, engage the main hoist lever andraise the attachment to the desired height.

iii. Raise the attachment high enough to clear the side of the stockpile.

    d) Dumping the stockpile

    i. Sound horn, look, and swing the attachment over the stockpile.

ii. Dump material from attachment by pushing the top pad of theTelescope/Clamshell pedal toward the operator and hold until theattachment is fully open.

iii. Sound horn, look, and swing back to the stockpile.

NOTE: Repeat the preceding steps until the stockpile is moved.

    B. Perform Shut Down Procedures

NOTE: Refer students to TM 5-3810-307-10.
