    Mandy Cronin (most wins) andCindy Eadie (best GAA).

    In the championship final, it wasEadie making 23 saves in 67 min-utes for the win. Sarah Love was ingoal for the Chiefs until sufferingan injury with just 5:12 left in thethird period. Rookie Megan Takedawas called in to make his CWHLdebut for the final minutes plus the

    overtime. Takeda made 13 savesbefore getting beat for the winner.

    The championship final wasplayed at the Brampton PoweradeCentre in Brampton, ON on 22March 2008. The final was alsobroadcast live on the leagues web-site, www.CWHL.ca.

    The new CWHL championshiptrophy was presented to theBrampton captain and alternatecaptains. It was the quartets sec-

    ond-straight championship victory,having won the final NWHL playofftitle one year earlier.

    CWHL CHAMPIONS

    The Brampton CanadettesThunder won the inauguralCanadian Womens HockeyLeague playoff championship.Rookie defender Molly Engstromscored the winning goal with just2:50 left in the first overtime pe-riod, giving the Canadettes Thun-der a 4-3 victory over theMississauga Chiefs.

    Lori Dupuis, who scored a goaland two assists, was named thechampionship game MVP. Dupuisscored an assist on Engstromswinning goal.

    After Dupuis assisted on JaynaHeffords opening goal, the Missis-sauga Chiefs knotted the scored 1-1 late in the first period. It wasJennifer Botterills league-leadingfifth goal of the playoffs.

    Just over three minutes into thesecond period, Dupuis made it 2-1with a shorthanded goal for the

    Canadettes Thunder.Brampton couldnt hold its lead,

    though, as Botterill scored apower-play goal just 36 secondslater. Bramptons penalty problemscontinued and Chiefs captain Som-mer West made it 3-2 later in thesecond period.

    Midway through the third period,it was Bramptons captain VickySunoharas turn to hit the red light.With 8:51 to play, the champi-onship final was tied 3-3.

    The tie lasted until late into over-time before Engstrom marked thewinner.

    The playoff win capped off a ter-rific first season in the new CWHL.Brampton was also Central Divisionchampions in the regular season.The Brampton lineup featured

    three of the leagues top-10 scor-ers - including MVP Jayna Hefford -as well as goaltending tandem

    The Brampton Canadettes Thun-ders Jayna Hefford was the Cana-dian Womens Hockey League MostValuable Player in the 2007-08season. The 30-year old star for-ward paced the league with 26goals in 27 games as the

    Canadettes Thunder finished firstin the Central Division.Hefford was hot straight

    out of the gate, settinga league single-gamerecord of six points inthe opening week-end: a 7-0 win overthe Burlington Barra-cudas on 16 Septem-ber. She was the onlyplayer to match her

    record, notching another sixpoints in a 7-1 win over the Starsde Montral on 26 January.A year-end Central All-Star, Hef-

    ford was the monthly Top Scorer inthree of the seasons six months:September, December and Janu-ary. She finished the season sec-ond in scoring with 58 points.

    Hefford owns quite the rsum inwomens leagues hockey. Her ca-reer goes back to the Central On-tario Womens Hockey Leaguewhen she was a goal-per-gameproducer for the old MississaugaChiefs.

    In 1998-99, Hefford joined theBrampton Thunder in what wouldbe the inaugural season of the

    National Womens HockeyLeague. Over the courseof the leagues nine-yearhistory, she set all-timerecords of 247 goals and412 points, all in spite ofmissing two seasons

    when she was busy win-ning Olympic gold medals

    with Canadas national team.She set the NWHL single-seasonrecord of 41 goals in 2003-04 andthen nearly matched it when shescored 40 in 2006-07.In 2007-08, Hefford finished first

    in MVP voting ahead of MontralsMarie-Philip Poulin and Missis-saugas Jennifer Botterill.

    At years end, Canadian Womens Hockey League coaches and captainswere asked to recognise the top players in the league. They were not al-

    lowed to select players from their own team. The Most Valuable Playerwas voted by the seven captains, the Outstanding Rookie was voted bythe seven coaches, while the Top Forward, Top Defender and Top Goal-tender were voted by the 14 coaches/captains. In each case, coachesand captains were asked to make a first choice (5 points), second choice(3 points), and third choice (1 point). The Central coaches/captainscounted for 50% of the vote while the Eastern coaches/captains countedfor the other 50% of the vote.Coaches were also asked to select Central and Eastern All-Stars.

    Coaches were asked to make three selections per position (six first place,six second place, six third place) within their own division and one se-lection per position (six first place) from the opposing division. The vot-ing points were weighted 60%/40% in favour of the coaches within the

    specific division. In other words, Central coaches had a greater say inrecognising Central All-Stars while Eastern coaches had a greater say inrecognising Eastern All-Stars.

    Jennifer Botterill won the scoring title inthe inaugural CWHL season after scoring61 points for the Mississauga Chiefs. Shefinished ahead of Jayna Hefford (58points), Sommer West (48), and Marie-Philip Poulin (43) in the 2007-08 scoringrace.

    Angela James was a long-time member ofthe North York/Beatrice Aeros. She alsoplayed for the Hamilton Golden Hawksand Newtonbrook Panthers. She was athree-time scoring champion in the Cen-tral Ontario Womens Hockey League andthe first-ever goal-scoring champion inthe National Womens Hockey League. Atthe international level, she won four-straight gold medals at the WomensWorld Championships, leading Canadawith 34 points after those first four IIHF

    tournaments. In 2008, she was one of thefirst women players inducted into the IIHFHockey Hall of Fame.

    The Stars de Montrals KimSt-Pierre was the Cana-dian Womens HockeyLeagues Top Goal-

    tender in 2007-08. Shefinished second in theleague with a 1.51goals-against averageas she helped the Starsfinish first overall in the

    standings. She posted an 8-2record with one shutout in

    10 games. She also con-tributed two assists to

    the teams offence.St-Pierre was selectedthe Top Goaltenderahead of Bramptons

    Cindy Eadie and Missis-saugas Sarah Love.

    The Burlington Barracudascaptain Becky Kellar wasthe leagues Top De-fender in 2007-08.After winning a goldmedal at the 2006Winter Olympics inTorino and then sittingout the 2006-07womens league season,

    Kellar returned as steady asever in 2007-08. She

    scored two goals, 10 as-sists and 12 points in 28games.

    Kellar was selected theTop Defender ahead ofBrampton rookie Molly

    Engstrom and Montralveteran Nathalie Dry.

    In the first week of recognition, thePhnix du Qubecs goaltenderChristine Dufour put up the CWHLPerformance of the Week. AfterQubec lost 2-8 on Saturday night(Dufour was not in net), Dufourmade 51 saves in a 2-1 victory

    over the Burlington Barracudas onSunday. The win ended Qubecsincredible 15-game losing streak.Down the stretch, Qubec wonseven of its final 13 games, butmissed the playoffs on the final dayof the season.

    The Mississauga Chiefs Jen-nifer Botterill was theleagues Top Forward in2007-08. She finishedfirst in the league with37 assists and 61points, winning the in-

    augural Angela JamesBowl for the scoring title.She also finished second in

    goal scoring (24), second inpoints-per-game average

    (2.35), and third in MostValuable Player voting.

    Botterill was selectedthe Top Forward aheadof Bramptons super

    Had she not missed a month of theseason playing for Canada, the 16-year old Marie-Philip Poulin might

    have done a lot more than just leadall rookies in points. The leaguesbest points-per-game producer,Poulin had a 16-game scoringstreak for the course of her short-ened season. She enjoyed threefive-point games. She finishedfourth in the league in goals (22)and points (43).

    Along with being the unanimousselection for the leagues Oustand-ing Rookie, she was an Eastern All-

    Star and league All-Rookie Teamforward. She also won the monthlyTop Scorer honour in October afterscoring 12 goals, seven assists and19 points in just seven games.Poulin finished first in Outstanding
