TheMarylandTerrapinsfinishedthe2006-07seasonwithanoverallrecordof6-5,andamarkof3-3intheACC.InterimheadcoachJarodSchroederisexcitedaboutthemixofreturningveteransandatalentedcropoffreshmanthatmakeupthe2007-08Terrapins.

“Ourveteranswillprovideguidancetoourtennewcomers,”saidSchroeder.“It’sanexcitingblendforourteamandIexpectustomaketremendousstridesthisyear.”

TheTerpswillcountontokeyseniorstoleadthesquad.CaptainEmilySmoakfinishedherseasonattheACCChampionshipsasaconsolationfinalistinthe100breast,placing21stoverall.Shealsocontributedtoasixth-placefinishinthe200freerelaywithanNCAAB-cuttime.

“ThisisEmily’ssecondyearascaptain,”notedSchroeder.“Shewillserveasthesolecaptainonthewomen’sside.Sheissomebodywhoissuccessfulacademicallyandinthepool.Emilyisarolemodelforourentirefreshmanclass,andwe’relookingtorecruitthattypeofpersonontooursquadforthefuture.”

MayaFinklerwasatopfinisherintheconsolationfinalsattheACCChampionshipsforthe100free,placing17th.Shealsocontributedtoathird-placefinishinthe800freerelaywithanNCAAB-cuttime.

TheTerpswillalsolooktosophomoreJenVogel,whoparticipatedintheUSNationalsthissummerinthe100and200butterfly

ShealsorepresentedMarylandwellattheACCChampionshipswithasixth-placefinishinthe400medleyrelayandwasabonusconsolationfinalist,placing18thoverallinthe200individualmedley.

“Oneofourstrengthsthisseasonwillbeourunderclassmen,sincethemajorityofourswimmingteamisfreshmanandsophomores,”saidSchroeder.

LeadingthatdepthinthefreshmanclassisJessalynCrawford.CrawfordbeginshercareeratMarylandaftercompetinginthissummer’sUSNationalsinIndianapolis,Ind.Shecompetedinthe400metermedleyandfreerelayswithherclubprogram.

SchroederisjoinedonthestaffbyDemeraeChristiansonandKevinClements,givingtheTerpsatalentedcoachingstafftogowithatalentedteam.

Thewomen’steamisequippedwithallthenecessarycomponentsforasuccessful2007-08season.MarylandbeginstheseasonhostingtwoexhibitionmatchesbeforetheseasonopeneragainstJohnsHopkinsonFriday,October26.InlateFebruary,theTerpswilltraveltoAtlanta,Ga.,fortheACCChampionships,lookingtoearnaspotintheNCAAChampionshipsinMarch.

“We’reexpectingastrongduel-meetingshowingthisyearandhopetoimprovequiteabit,butwillusetheregularseasonasasteptowardstheACCsattheendoftheyear,”saidSchroeder.“ItisalwaysagoalofourstofocusontheACCs,andhopefullytakethatnextsteptowardtheNCAAsattheendoftheseason.”

2006-07 women's reviewTerPs show Promise for The fuTure

TheUniversityofMarylandwomen’sswimminganddivingteamhostedJohnsHopkins tobegin the2006-07seasonoffwithavictory.Marylanddominatedthemeet,takingfirstineightindividualeventsinadditiontothe200-yardmedleyrelaywiththeteamofformerTerpsNatalieFerdinand,GigideTollandKaleenaLaputka,andseniorEmilySmoak.

The Terps then headed to Durham, N.C., where theytriumphedagainstDukeandNCStateinthefirstACCcompetitionof the season. JuniorYelena Skalinskaya led Maryland withwinsinthe50and100-yardfreestyleswhilesophomoreAndreaLehner took the 200 and 1000-yard freestyles, also finishingwith an NCAA B-cut time. Sophomore Nina Rossi picked uptwo firstplace finishes in the200-yardbutterflyand200-yardindividualmedley.

To add to this early-season success, Maryland had animpressivethirdplacefinishatthe2006TerrapinCupInvitational.Sophomore Jen Vogel led the way, winning the 200-meterbutterflywhileLehneralsoplacedthirdasachampionshipfinalistin the500-yardfreestyleand100-yardbackstroke,swimmingwithanNCAAB-cuttimeinthe1650-yardfreestyle.RossiandfellowsophomoresAnnieBroomeandPattyDeScenzawerealsochampionship finalists in theevent, taking fifth,seventh,andeighthplacerespectively.

TheTerpsheadedbackontheroadtofaceWestVirginia.SkalinskayaledtheTerpswithsecond-placefinishesinthe50and100-yardfreestyleswhileLehnertookfirstinthe100-yardbackstroke.TheTerpsdominatedthe100-yardbutterflyatthemeet,withVogel,Broome,andDeScenzatakingthetop-threeplaces.

In January, Maryland traveled to North Miami, Fla. for atraining trip and relay meet hosted by Florida InternationalUniversity.TheTerps placed first, winning seven out of theeightrelayevents.

Maryland hosted Pittsburgh, Villanova, and Richmond forSeniorWeekend.Onthefirstnightofcompetition,Marylandwasvictoriousinthreeindividualevents,withVogelwinningthe100-yardbutterfly,formerTerpSashaMalaninafinishingfirstinthe400-yardindividualmedleywithanNCAAB-cuttimeandLehnertakingthe100-yardfreestylewithanNCAAB-cuttime.

TheTerpswrappedupseniorweekendwithLehnerplacingfirstinthe200-yardindividualmedleywithanNCAAB-cuttime,Skalinskayatakingthe50-yardfreestyle,andMalaninapickingup her second win with a first-place finish in the 200-yardbreaststroke.MarylandplacedaheadofVillanovaandRichmond,butwasdefeatedbyPittsburghinthequadmeet.

NextupfortheTerpswasadouble-dualmeetagainstVirginiaTechandGeorgiaTech.LehnerandseniorMayaFinklertookthetop-twoplacesinthe200-yardfreestyle.Lehnerwentontowinthe500-yardfreestyle,Vogeltookfirstinthe200-yardbutterfly,andtheteamofSkalinskaya,Finkler,Lapuka,andSmoaktookthe400-yardfreestylerelay.

Tocloseouttheregularseason,theTerpstraveledfortwodualmeetsagainstNorthCarolinaandVirginia.BothACCprovedtobetoughlosses,buttheTerpsstillpreformedstrong,winningsixeventsandhavingtwotopfinishesinthemeets.

MarylandfinishedasolidsixthattheACCChampionships,withseveralnotable individualswims.Malanina ledtheTerpswithasecond-placefinishinthe400-yardindividualmedleywithanNCAAB-cuttimeof4:17.62.MalaninaalsoqualifiedforthechampionshipfinalandtookfourthwithanNCAAB-cuttimeof2:02.14inthe20-yardindividualmedley.

Lehnertookfourthinthechampionshipfinalforthe200-yardbackstroke with an NCAA B-cut time of 1:59.37, winning theconsolationfinalforthe200-yardindividualmedleytakingninthwithanNCAAB-cuttimeof2:01.75.

Skalinskaya was a championship finalist in the 50-yardfreestyle,takingeighthoverallafterswimminganNCAAB-cuttimeof23.31intheprelim.

Vogel qualified for the championship final in the 200-yardbutterflyplacingfourthwithacareer-bestNCAAB-cuttimeof2:01.43.Alsointhechampionshipfinalforthe200-yardbutterfly,DeScenzatooksixthwithanNCAAB-cuttimeof2:02.39,andRossifinishedineighthplacewithatimeof2:04.18.

Rossiwasachampionshipfinalistinthe400-yardindividualmedley,takingseventhplacewithaseason-besttimeof4:25.27.SophomoreJackieDavidsonalsoqualifiedforthechampionshipfinalandtookeighthoverallinthe100-yardbackstrokewithaseason-besttime(56.63).
