Claude English enters his 12th year as Park University’s Director of Athletics. Park’s A.D. since January of 1996, English coached

men’s basketball for 13 standout seasons before re-tiring from coaching at the conclusion of the 2004-05 season. Park University athletics has undergone dras-tic improvements under English. Women’s golf and men’s baseball have been added as intercollegiate sports since his appointment to A.D. In addition, English has overseen numerous facility improve-ments, such as Park soccer’s 1,500-seat Julian Field and the construction of the Breckon Sports Center. Under English’s watch as A.D., 116 students have earned All-America Scholar-Athlete honors, while 66 individuals were named athletic All-Amer-icans. Since 2002, Park athletic teams have won 23 conference titles, 14 region championships and ad-vanced to 23 national tournaments. English’s term as A.D. has also seen the incep-tion of the Pirate Club, Park’s Support organization. In 2006-07, Park made its third trip to the Buf-falo Funds-NAIA Division I Men’s Basketball Tourna-ment, marking one of seven sports to advance and represent the Pirates in national compeition within the NAIA ranks (men’s and women’s soccer, men’s and women’s cross country, men’s and women’s in-door track & field, men’s and women’s outdoor track & field). Additionally, Park University served as the host institution for the 2006 NAIA Women’s Soccer Na-

tional Championship at the College Boulevard Ath-letic Complex in Olathe, Kan. The Pirate men’s volleyball program also ad-

vanced to the NAIA Men’s Volleyball National Invi-tational Tournament, and Park will host the event in the 2008 season. The winningest coach in Park men’s basketball history with a record of 182-207, English’s coach-ing tenure was highlighted by the Pirates’ run to the NAIA Final Four in 1997-98, which ended with a school-record mark of 27-8. English was honored at the national tournament with the Charles A. Kri-gel Award for outstanding sportsmanship, while his team was awarded the Dr. James Naismith-Emil S. Liston Sportsmanship Award for the team recog-nized as most sportsmanlike at the tourney. After playing basketball for Christian College in Dallas, Texas, and the University of Rhode Island, English was selected in the NBA draft by the Port-land Trail Blazers where he played the 1970-71 sea-son. English also played in the Eastern Basketball Association for the Hartford Capitals, the affiliate team for the Philadelphia 76ers. In 1973-74, English won the Eastern Basketball Association Champion-ship with the Capitals. He was a three-year captain at Hartford. He joined the coaching staff at the University of Rhode Island in 1972 where he remained for 12 years, including four seasons as the head coach from 1981-84. English was named Coach of the Year in the Atlantic 10 Conference in 1981. Overall, he owns a 227-277 career record in 17 seasons as a head coach.

Park University calls Parkville, Mo., and the Greater Kansas City Area home, offering students the features of both

small-town life and the flashing lights of the big city. With a population just more than 4,000, Parkville allows students the small-town life-style and tightly knit community often times associated with small college athletics and the NAIA. Originally a trading post on the Missouri River, Parkville grew as Kansas City boomed in the late 1800s, which included the founding of Park University. Both the University and the city get their names from Col. George S. Park, who played a key role in the early develop-ment of the area. Today, Parkville’s historic downtown dis-trict coupled with new shopping areas to the north and east of Park University’s Parkville Campus gives Park University students two great entertainment opportunities within the area. Parkville sits within the Northland of the Greater Kansas City Metropolitan Area, which encompasses 15 counties, nine of which are in Missouri and six across the state line in Kansas. The Northland is locally referred to as “north of the river”. Contained wholly within Missouri, it encompasses portions of Clay County including the northern half of Kansas City, Mo., and the cities of Parkville, Liberty, North Kansas City and Gladstone. As a whole, the Kansas City Metro-politan Area is situated at the confluence of the Kansas and Missouri Rivers, often referred to as Kaw Point, straddling the state border between Missouri and Kan-sas. The Kansas City Metropolitan Sta-

tistical Area, anchored by Kansas City, Mo., is the 27th largest in the United States, with an estimated population just shy of 2 million. A tradition-rich city known for its barbe-cue and rich sports history, Kansas City is cur-rently home to Major League Baseball’s Kan-sas City Royals, the Kansas City Chiefs of the NFL, Major League Soccer’s Kansas City Wiz-ards, and the Kansas Speedway, which is host to several NASCAR events throughout the year including one Nextel Cup Series event in the fall. Kansas City is home to the Kansas City T-Bones minor league baseball franchise, the Kansas City Brigade of the Arena Foot-ball League, and the Kansas City Explorers of World Team Tennis. Kansas City is also home to the Sprint Center and Kansas City Power & Light District, which is scheduled for a Fall 2007 opening.

The Sprint Center also houses the College Basketball Experience, which will include the College Basketball Hall of Fame. Blocks from the Power & Light District and the Sprint Center sits Municipal Auditori-um, home to the Buffalo Funds-NAIA Division I Men’s Basketball Tournament. Last season, Park advanced to the tour-nament’s sweet 16, marking the deepest run in more than a decade by a Kansas City-area team. Kansas City is also known for its historic shopping districts, including Westport and the Country Club Plaza, which is one of the world’s largest outdoor shopping areas de-signed for motor-vehicle traffic. Commonly referred to as “The Plaza”, the Country Club Plaza is home to one of the nation’s largest holiday light displays between the Thanksgiv-ing Holiday and midway through January.

THE FIRST GENERAL SESSION OF THE `Organizing Convention’ of the National Association of Intercollegiate Basketball

(NAIB) was held in the Phillips Hotel, Kansas City, Missouri, at 10 a.m., Sunday, March 10, 1940. But the seed from which the NAIB sprouted was planted two blocks away at Municipal Auditorium. It was there in 1937 that a men’s basketball tournament tipped off which has become the longest continuous national collegiate tournament in any sport. The tournament was the brainchild of Emil S. Liston, Dr. James Naismith, Frank Cramer, and a group of Kansas City business leaders who wanted to provide Kansas City-area fans with exciting amateur competition and to provide a framework for small colleges and universities to determine a national basketball champion. In 1948, the NAIB affirmed its commitment to equality by becoming the first national organization to offer intercollegiate postseason opportunities to black student-athletes. Unprecedented action was taken in 1953 when historically black institutions were voted into membership. One year previous to the inclusion of historically black institutions, another form of expansion occurred. In 1952, as a result of the expressed desires of the member institutions, appropriate steps were taken by which the NAIB was transformed into the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA), and the first all-encompassing set of rules and standards was adopted. Recommendations to take this important action were made by the National Executive Committee at the annual meeting after determining the move was desirable and feasible. The recommendation was later approved by a mail vote of the entire membership. With the Association’s new name came the addition of national championships in golf,

tennis and outdoor track and field. Football, cross country, baseball and swimming and diving were added to the championships calendar in 1956. Wrestling (1958), soccer (1959), bowling (1962-78), gymnastics (1964-84), indoor track and field (1966) and men’s volleyball (1969-80) were later additions. Two major changes were made during the 1970s. An extensive study was completed in 1970 which paved the way for two divisions of football. Four teams qualified for the playoffs in each division at the outset and, later, 16 teams were selected for postseason play. In 1997, football was consolidated to one division again as the Football Coaches Association cited a narrowing gap between enrollment size and philosophy of the two divisions. As the NAIA moved into its second half-century in the 1980s, it revolutionized national collegiate athletics with the establishment of athletics programs for women on August 1, 1980. Official notice on that date followed a mail vote by the membership on May 1 that supported becoming the first organization to offer collegiate athletics to both men and women. The championship calendar for women began that year with basketball, cross country, gymnastics, indoor and outdoor track and field, softball, tennis and volleyball. Soccer was added in 1984, and golf was included in 1995. Gymnastics was discontinued after the 1988 championship. Another important chapter in the history of the NAIA unfolded in 1992 when the Association voted to move its headquarters from Kansas City to Tulsa. Moving with the national office was the Division I Men’s Basketball National Championship which had been held in Kansas City for 56 years. In 1993, the waves of change once again washed over the Association. The membership voted to discontinue the use of district play as a

means of qualification for national championships, marking the first time since the NAIA’s creation that district competition would not be used. In 1999, the NAIA restructured to include 14 regions to better serve its membership. Each region is governed by a regional management committee comprised of various conference and independent representatives. In 2000, the NAIA reaffirmed its purpose to enhance the character-building aspects of sport. Through Champions of Character, the NAIA seeks to create an environment in which every student-athlete, coach, official and spectator is committed to the true spirit of competition through five tenets: respect, integrity, responsibility, servant leadership and sportsmanship. This program will educate and create awareness of the positive character-building traits afforded by sports and return integrity to competition at the collegiate and youth levels while impacting all of society. Everything has come full circle. The NAIA relocated its National Office in July of 2001 to Olathe, Kansas, just miles from Gardner where the idea for the small-college basketball tournament gave rise to the NAIA. Now, nearly 65 years after that initial tournament, the Buffalo Funds-NAIA Division I Men’s Basketball National Championship has returned to historic Municipal Auditorium, the arena that was home to so many memories from 1927-74. Last season, Park made its third appearance in the NAIA’s signature event and the first since the tournament returned to Kansas City, as the Pirates advanced to the NAIA’s Sweet 16 to close the 2006-07 season. In Summer 2007, the NAIA relocated its National Office to downtown Kansas City, Mo., bringing more NAIA tradition to the downtown area, with the national headquarters now sitting blocks from Kansas City’s newest attraction, the Sprint Center, in the heart of the Kansas City

Power and Light District. The NAIA has 50,000 student-athletes participating at nearly 300 member colleges and universities throughout the United States and Canada. Divided into 14 regions, the NAIA offers 23 championships in 13 sports. Since 1937, the NAIA has continued a long tradition of pushing the envelope and making a positive difference in the lives of students, coaches and parents. The Champions of Character program is the latest cutting-edge addition to the NAIA’s proud history of innovation. Through Champions of Character, the NAIA seeks to create an environment in which every student-athlete, coach, official and spectator are committed to the true spirit of competition through the five core values: respect, integrity, responsibility, servant leadership and sportsmanship.

Two-time NAIA Division I Independent Coach of the Year Jason Kline enters his

third season as the head men’s basketball coach at Park Univer-sity. In two seasons, Kline has compiled an overall mark of 35-29, including a 25-win season in 2006-07 that marked one of the best single-season turnarounds in NAIA Men’s Basketball History. Kline’s 2006-07 Pirates went 25-7 and advanced to the school’s third NAIA Men’s Basketball Tour-nament in school history, ending the run in the NAIA Sweet 16 with a loss to Azusa Pacific, 91-88, after beating Olivet Nazarene in the first round 68-62. Along the way, Park won seven games against oppo-nents that either spent time in the NAIA Men’s Basketball Top 25 or moved on to play in either the NAIA Division I or Division II National Tournament. In addition to the wins over NAIA post-season and ranked opponents, the Pirates also notched wins over NCAA Division I UMKC and NCAA Division II Rockhurst dur-ing the 2006-07 campaign. Kline’s second-season at the helm of the Park men’s basketball squad ended with three Academic All-Ameri-cans and two NAIA All-Americans. The Pirates were ranked throughout the 2006-07 season, spending the latter part of the year in the Top 10, reaching as high as No. 6 late in the season before finishing the year at No. 9 in the poll. In his first season with the Pirates, Kline was named NAIA Division I Independent Region Coach of the Year as his team advanced to the semifinals of the Division I Inde-pendent Region Tournament. 22 • 2007-08 PARK UNIVERSITY BASKETBALL

LOOKING TO BUILD ON BANNER YEAR After finishing two wins shy of a school record in 2006-07, Park University will attempt to hit the reset button and start all over Nov. 2, as the 2007-08 regular season begins at Breck-on Sports Center against Central Methodist College. The regular-season opener tips at 4 p.m., and the Pirates will have one preseason tune-up prior to the regular season, taking on the Livin’ the Dream exhibition squad Oct. 20. The exhibition contest is also scheduled for a 4 p.m. start. Last season, led by former UCLA stand-out Jaron Rush, Livin’ the Dream handed Park a 94-88 defeat 11 days prior to the start of the regular season. Two extra days will sit be-tween exhibition play and the regular season in 2007-08, as the Livin’ The Dream and Cen-tral Methodist contests will be played 13 days apart to begin the upcoming schedule. Gone from a season ago are a pair of All-Americans and five additional letterwinners, running the total to seven players from last season’s squad that do not return for the 2007-08 campaign. Park’s exhibition paired with the regular-season opener marks the only point on the 2007-08 schedule that finds the Pirates seek-ing to avenge losses from the 2006-07 season in back-to-back games. Park loses 46 points per game from its de-parting All-America duo of Brandon Voorhees and Kevin Nelson, as Voorhees led the nation at 25.2 points per game and Nelson chipped in 19.8 per game to lead the nation’s eighth-best scoring offense, averaging 85.2 points per game. Park also rated 16th in NAIA Division I men’s basketball last season in scoring margin at plus-9.1, and the Pirates pro-duced a season-long winning streak of 10 games that began with a 90-18 win over Messenger C o l l e g e o n

Dec. 18 and ended with a 71-45 win over Southwestern Christian in mid-February. Park’s opponent in the season opener, Central Methodist, took on the task of stop-ping the streak Feb. 17, beating the Pirates 90-84 in Fayette, Mo., which marked the first of two-straight losses before a Senior Day win over Brescia closed the 2006-07 regular sea-son.

RETURNING STARTERS The Pirates will return three starters from last season’s 25-7 squad that advanced to the NAIA Sweet 16, including senior Nick Burton, who is the squad’s top returning scorer from a year ago at 12.6 points per game. Burton also averaged nearly 26 minutes per contest last season, starting in 31 games and playing 32. Burton was a second-team All-Indepen-dent performer last season and averaged six rebounds per contest. Michael Zimmerman also returns to the starting lineup for the Pirates in 2007-08 after earning All-Academic Independent Region Honors last season. Zimmerman started all 32 games for Park, av-eraging 4.3 points and 3.2 assists per game while hitting 63 percent from the foul line and averaging 24 minutes. Zimmerman was also 44 percent from the field and grabbed 37 rebounds last season.Arturo Donzella is the third returning starter to the Park lineup in 2007-08, bringing back 4.9 points and 2.8 rebounds per game while also averaging 1.5 assists and 1.1 steals last season. Donzella was 51.7 percent from the floor last season and 74.4 percent at the line in 18.9 minutes per game. He made 17 starts and played in all 32 contests a year ago for the Pi-rates. The expected starting lineup for the Pi-rates includes two players that saw consider-able time in 2006-07, as Donovan Williams should start in the Pirate backcourt after av-eraging four points and 2.6 rebounds in 22 games played last season. Williams was a 55.6 percent 3-point shooter a season ago, dishing

out 28 assists and turning opponents over 17 times on the year.

Williams was also a 63 percent shooter from the foul line, playing 15.1 minutes per game without a start in 2006-07. Jon Meriweather rounds out the

probable starters for the 2007-08 cam-paign after averaging 6.6 points and

3.8 rebounds per game. He also av-eraged 1.5 blocks per contest, swat-ting 35 opponent attempts in 23

games played. Meriweather made one start on the season after transferring to the pro-gram from Morgan State University.

Meriweather finished the season at 54.5 percent from the floor and hit a blistering 82 percent from the line. Meriweather had 10 as-sists and 11 steals on the year. The starting five gives a three-guard look to opponents in 2007-08, as Burton (6’5, 205 lbs.) and Meriweather (6’8, 220 lbs.) control the paint with Williams (6’1, 180 lbs.), Zimmer-man (6’0, 175 lbs.) and Donzella (6’3, 190 lbs.) in the backcourt. Off the bench, the Pirates expect help from returning seniors Ben Wallis (6’5, 205), Michael Koch (6’3, 190) and Admir Aljic (6’7, 215). Eric Evans, a 6’2 sophomore guard, will also be called upon to provide the Pirates with depth in the backcourt off the bench.

NEWCOMERS CHALLENGE Five junior college transfers, two impact freshmen and a junior transfer who did not play basketball last season highlight an eight-member newcomer class that is challenging for playing time early this season in the Park men’s basketball program. Six-foot guard Nathan Duncan and fellow six-footer Marcus Seidel come to the Pirates after successful two-year careers at Lansing Community College and Meramec Communi-ty College, respectively, and a pair of mid-sized forwards from the juco ranks should help the Pirates in the paint in the form of Joe Harvey (Cowley County Community College) and Jus-tin Hopper (Cochise Community College). The tallest addition to the Pirate roster in 2007-08 is also the second addition to the squad from Lansing Community College, as 6’9 power forward Milan Susnjar joins Duncan in Parkville after two years in Lansing. The Pirates are also looking for big things out of incoming freshmen Nigel Jackson and Jaymie Snell. Jackson comes to Park from Pro-viso West High School in the Chicago area, while Snell hails from Columbus, Ga., and Northside High School. Snell is one of three players on the Park roster from Columbus, as Eric Evans an Donovan Williams are also na-tives of the Georgia city. The final addition to the Pirate roster is Deron Cherry II, who previously attended the University of Missouri-Kansas City before com-ing to Park as a junior on the roster. Cherry was a stand-out golfer at Rockhurst High School, graduating from the Kansas City, Mo., high school in 2003.

PIRATE ROSTER FEATURES PRO TIES Two professional sports ties are evident on the men’s basketball roster in 2007-08 at Park University, one of which is a returning bloodline and the other belonging to a new-comer. Returning forward and expected start-er Jon Meriweather is the son of Joe C. Meri-

weather, who played 10 years in the NBA with Atlanta, Houston, New Orleans, New York and Kansas City. Jon Meriweather played in 23 games with a start in 2006-07 after transferring from Morgan State. Park’s second professional tie lies outside the basketball arena, as incoming guard Deron Cherry II is the son of five-time Pro Bowl safety Deron Cherry of the Kansas City Chiefs. Cherry intercepted 50 passes in his 11-year career for 688 yards and one touchdown. He made Pro Bowl appearances in 1983, 1984, 1985, 1986, and 1988. He was also a five time 1st team All-AFC and two time 2nd team All-AFC selection. Deron II comes to Park after attend-ing UMKC and practicing with the Kanga-roos for a short time. Cherry was a stand-out golfer at Rockhurst High School in Kansas City, Mo.

VOORHEES NAMED CO-POY Park University’s Brandon Voorhees was named NAIA Co-Player of the Year by Basketball Times and was named to Bas-ketball Times First-Team NAIA All-Ameri-can team. Voorhees led the NAIA in scoring last year at 25.2 points per game, helping the Pirates to an overall mark of 25-7 and a second-round appearance in the 2007 Buffalo Funds-NAIA Men’s Basketball Na-tional Tournament. The Pirates knocked off Olivet Nazarene to open post-season play and fell to quarterfinalist Azusa Pa-cific in the second round. The Grandville, Mich., native went for 30 or more points in 10 games last sea-son, failing to score in double-figures only once in 31 games played. He also scored 20 or more points 22 times last season. Voorhees scored a season-best 39 points in the Pirates’ second game of the season against Midland Lutheran College, breaking the 35-point barrier for the first of four times in 2006-07. His three additional 35-point nights came against post-season qualifiers, go-ing for 35 late in the year against Moun-tain State, 36 against then NAIA Division II No. 1 MidAmerican Nazarene, and 37 against nationally ranked College of the Ozarks. Voorhees ended the year shooting 46 percent from the floor including 36.7 percent from outside the 3-point line, while also hitting 83 percent from the foul line last season. He shared the Player of the Year honor with Lambuth’s Ivan Jenkins, and Robert Morris head coach Al Bruehl was

also honored as Coach of the Year. Voorhees and Jenkins were joined on the first team by George-town’s Brian Silverhorn, Illinois-Springfield’s Eddie Smith and Reggie George from Robert Mor-ris.

MASSEY RATING The Massey Rat-ing, viewed as an un-official RPI that takes into account wins and losses as well as strength of schedule, rated Park the sixth-best team in NAIA Division I in 2006-07, behind only Robert Morris (251), Oklahoma City (263), Concordia (345), Azusa Pacific (367) and Southern Nazarene (384), who fin-i s h e d n i n e p o i n t s ahead of the Pirates and are again on Park’s sched-ule for the 2007-08 season. The NAIA Massey Top 10 rounded out with San Diego Christian (404), George-town (406), Oklahoma Baptist (453) and Mountain State (459). Park finished ahead of a number of NCAA Division II teams and 11 NCAA Division I schools, including Radford (395), Howard (396), Bethune-Cookman (402), Prairie View A&M (414), New Jersey Tech (419), Northern Colora-do (423), St. Peter’s (427), Alabama A&M (435), Charleston Southern (438), Winston Salem State (454) and Iona (464). NAIA dIVISION I BASKETBALL TOURNAMENTS

The National As-sociation of Inter-collegiate Athlet-

ics Division I Basketball Championships will re-turn to familiar facilities in the 2007-08 season, as the women’s tourna-ment is slated for March 19-25 at Oman Arena in Jackson, Tenn., while the men’s tournament, presented by Buffalo Funds, will play the same dates in Kansas City’s historic Municipal Audito-rium. The Pirates are 4-3 all-time in the men’s tournament, making two appear-ances in Kansas City, sandwiching a trip to Tulsa, Okla., that marked the most suc-cessful season in Park basketball history. Park qualified for its first tournament in 1991, bowing out to the 14th-seed Briar Cliff 72-60 at Kansas City’s Kemper Arena. Last season, the Pirates won their first-round game in comeback fashion, knock-ing off Olivet Nazarene 68-61 before los-ing to Azusa Pacific 91-88 in a game that saw the Pirates come from behind on APU’s double-digit lead in the first half. The Pirates’ banner year came to a close in the 1998 tournament, as current Athletic Director Claude English guided Park to a school-record 27 wins, ending the year with an overall mark of 27-8, in-cluding an American Midwest Conference championship. Park defeated St. Mary’s out of San Antonio, Texas, in 1998’s first round 74-58, followed by a three-point second-round win over Phillips, 69-66. In the quarterfinals, Park earned a 14-point victory over St. Vincent, 73-59, but the dream season would come to an end in the semifinals, falling 67-56 to South-ern Nazarene. The 1998 tournament was played in Tulsa on the campus of Oral Roberts University. In 2002, the tournament re-turned to its birthplace, moving back in to Municipal Auditorium in the middle of Downtown Kansas City’s convention dis-trict. Municipal Auditorium is a 9,287-seat multi-purpose arena in Kansas City, Mis-souri, and is also home to the UMKC Kan-garoos in addition to the NAIA champion-ship.

As of 2007, Municipal Auditorium had hosted more NCAA Men’s Basketball Tour-nament games (83), regional finals (13) and Final Fours (9) than any other facility, and the arena also hosted three of the first four Final Fours, but has not hosted a tournament game since 1964. Municipal is also host to the MIAA and Big 12 wom-en’s postseason championships. The Auditorium was also home to the Kansas City Kings for their first two years in in the Fountain City in the early 1970s. Municipal is connected to the Bartle Convention Center by way of skywalks over 13th and Central streets. An under-ground walkway through a public park-ing garage provides access to the Kansas City Marriott Downtown.

JACKSON HOSTS WOMEN’S TITLE

Jackson, Tenn., will continue its tradi-tion of hosting NAIA tournaments with the women’s championship this

season, as the tournament will take place inside Oman Arena. Park has made one trip to Jackson – in 2006 – as the Pirates went 0-1 in their only NAIA tournament appearance in school history, falling to Trevecca Naza-rene 64-51.

ROAD TO THE POST-SEASON

The road to Kansas City and Jackson will again go through Columbia, S.C., as both the Pirate men and

women will compete in the NAIA Inde-pendent Region Tournament. Park will be going after the Inde-pendent Region Title against four more schools on the women’s side and five on the men’s. Independent region rivals in-clude: Allen University, Brescia University, Morris College, Mountain State (men’s basketball only) and Voorhees College. Last season, the Park women were semifinalists, while the men beat Moun-tain State by 11 in the Final.

In the 2006 season, Coach Meriweather led his team into an aggressive schedule and this season is no different. Fourteen scheduled games against NAIA post-season participants including two against NAIA Division II Women’s Basketball semifinalists highlight Park’s 29-game women’s basketball schedule for the 2007-08 season.

The Pirates will play a dozen games against teams that were ranked in Top 25 polls at the end of 2006-07, opening on the road Nov. 1 at Columbia College. Park continues the road trip Nov. 3 at McKendree University.

Columbia College spent the majority of the 2006 season in the NAIA Top 25 poll, occupying the No. 20 spot. They were ranked No. 25 in the preseason poll and made their way to No. 19 in

the Feb. 7th poll. McKendree peaked late last season, sitting as the No. 24 team in the NAIA for two weeks in row, including the final poll.

The Pirates will open up the regular season at Breckon Sports Center on Nov. 6 against NAIA Division II opponent MidAmerica Nazarene. MidAmerica Nazarene University becomes the Pirates’ third-straight post-season qualifier. The Pioneers were a No. 10 preseason pick and reached No. 3 in the NAIA Division II Top 25.

Park then finds themselves on the road for five straight games. The Pirates play in the first of two regular-season tournaments Nov. 9-10 in Ottawa, Kan.,

before traveling to William Jewell College Nov. 14 to play the Cardinals, who ended last season with an NAIA tournament bid and a No. 6 final ranking in NAIA Division II Women’s Basketball.

Oklahoma Baptist was No. 16 in the preseason poll and finished the year at No. 23. Oklahoma Christian spent the greater part of the 2006-07 season ranked in the 20’s. They were ranked No. 15 for the first weeks

in Feb. and ended the season at No. 18. SNU spent the majority of last season ranked, occupying most of their time on the poll at No. 16.

They finished 2006-07 ranked No. 16 with an NAIA Division I Women’s tournament appearance.Park steps out of NAIA play on Nov. 27 to travel to NCAA Division

II power Missouri Western State in St. Joseph, Mo. MWSU comes off of an NCAA Tournament appearance in 2006-07 after finishing the season

ranked No. 9 in the year’s final poll.Missouri Baptist and Hannibal-LaGrange make up a two-game home-

stand Nov. 29 and Dec. 1 at Breckon Sports Center, and the Pirates return the trip to SNU Dec. 4 in Bethany, Okla. Park then returns games at Missouri Baptist and Hannibal-LaGrange Dec. 6 and Dec. 8.

Dec. 15 opens an eight-game home-stretch for the Pirates, taking on Oklahoma Baptist in Breckon before a Dec. 17 game against Columbia College that completes the series between the Pirates and Cougars for the 2007-08 campaign.

The first four games of the homestand are against post-season qualifiers from a season ago, with the New Year schedule opening Jan. 3 against Ottawa University, followed by a Jan. 5 return game against McKendree. Ottawa was a No. 9 preseason selection in the NAIA Divi-

sion II Top 25 poll and were up-and-down all season long, peaking at No. 11 in the Feb. 14th poll.Judson College and Peru State follow on Jan. 7 and Jan. 11, while Brescia University comes to Breckon Sports Center Jan. 19 after finish-

ing 2006-07 as the NAIA’s Independent Tournament representative in Jackson last season. Nationally ranked Langston University concludes the long stretch inside the domes on Jan. 23 before Park hits the road for five-straight, including a Feb. 5 date at College of the Ozarks. Ozarks, the 2006 NAIA Division II Runner Up, was a preseason No. 5 pick and spent the whole 2006-07 season at the No. 2 spot on the Top 25 poll.

The road trip opens at Philander Smith College Jan. 29 and also includes games at Allen (Feb. 8), Voorhees (Feb. 9) and Brescia (Feb. 23). Park concludes the regular season Feb. 26 in Parkville, taking on Philander Smith at 5 p.m. inside Breckon Sports Center on Senior Day.

The Pirates will take part in the NAIA Independent Region Tournament March 7-9 at a to be determined location, and the NAIA women’s basketball season concludes March 19-25 in Jackson, Tenn., with the 28th Annual NAIA Division I Women’s Basketball Champion-ship at Oman Arena.

2006 SeaSoN recaP

The 2006 season was a tough year for the Park University Women’s Basket-

ball Team. Despite posting a 3-24 record, the fourth-seeded women were able to advance to the semi-final round of the NAIA Independent Region Basketball Tournament. After posting a 74-42 win over fifth-seeded Allen University in the tournament’s quarterfinals, the women’s season ended at the hands of Brescia University 45-34 in Columbia, S.C.

Three players were honored post-season for their achievements through-out the year. Guard Jacqueline Greer was named to the NAIA Independent All-Tournament Team, forward Rachel Bankhead was NAIA All-Independent Re-gion Scholar-Athlete and forward Megan Cummings was NAIA All-Independent Region First-Team.

The team took some devastating blows early on, losing several players to injuries. The Pirate injuries forced Coach Meriweather to juggle several players around on the court and Park could never quite get into the groove. “The lack of senior leadership and injuries plagued us last year,” said Coach Meriweather.

The Pirates were able to post two regular season wins and notched their third win in the NAIA Independent Region Basketball Tournament. Park got their first win on Nov. 17 in the John Brown University Tournament, posting a 53-52 win over Lyon College. Megan Cummings led the Pirates with 15 points and 12 total rebounds.

Coach Meriweather and team broke a 12-game losing streak on Jan. 9 with a 75-68 overtime win over Peru State College in the Breckon Sports Center. Jackie Greer scored a team high 23 points and grabbed 15 rebounds to lead Park. The Pirates had two other play-ers score in double-digits, with Katrena Richard adding 15 points and Cummings scoring 12.

the 2006 team, appeared in 16 games and started in six. The senior started in five of the last six games for Coach Meriweather. She scored an individual high of nine points against Columbia College and made four-of-five free throws in the 53-52 win over Lyon College. Hopkins scored 66 total points last season and nabbed 15 total rebounds.

Hartford came off the bench for Park in nine contests, adding 14 points on the year. She hit the boards 19 times, snagging six of-fensive and 13 defensive rebounds. Field saw action in 16 games, scor-ing 23 total points and grabbing 47 rebounds.

2007-2008 returNerSPark University returns a solid

set of returners, who saw lots of ac-tion last season. Six members from last year’s squad will be back for the 2007-08 season, including: seniors Rachel Bankhead, Katherine Baker and Katrena Richard, juniors Megan Cummings and Jackie Greer and sophomore Tracey Oden.

Bankhead was one of two players who started and played in all 27 games. The 5-8 forward had 118 total rebounds and was the leader in three-point shots with 29 made. Bankhead, a Kansas City, Mo. native, posted a team high four three-pointers made against McKendree College and Oklahoma Baptist Univer-sity. She was the third highest scorer on last year’s squad, scoring 220 total points. Bankhead also aided the team on defen-sive with 20 steals and two blocks.

Baker, a Ursa, Ill. native, appeared in 26 total games, earning the starting nod in 18 for the Pirates. She scored 99 total points and converted 39 of 58 free throws for a .672 free throw percentage. On the court, Baker was one of several leaders in an aggressive style of play with 15 steals and 68 personal fouls.

Richard returns for her senior sea-son and Coach Meriweather looks for her to make an immediate impact. The Kan-sas City, Kan. native started in 19 games but appeared in all 27 for the Pirates in

2006. Richard scored 170 total points and was second on the team with 31steals. Richard converted 20 three-point field goals last season, posting four against Langston University on Nov. 4.

Cummings, a NAIA All-Independent Region First-Team selection, returns for her junior season and is looking to pick-up where she left off last season. The St. Joseph, Mo. native led the team in total points (211), total free throws made (75), minutes played (904), field goals (122), defensive rebounds (144), total rebounds (211) and assists (31).

One of two players to start and play in all 27 games, Cummings had two blocks and 24 steals. Cummings scored a team high 23 points against John Brown University and also made eight field goals on two separate occasions against McKendree College and Southern Naza-rene University.

Greer, a 5-7 guard and NAIA Inde-pendent All-Tournament Team member, will see more time on the court this sea-son. The junior appeared in all 26 games

and started in 17 in her sophomore out-ing. Greer was second in scoring with 238 total points and had 201 total rebounds.

The Kansas City, Mo. native led the defense with ten blocks and 44 steals on the year. Greer tied Cummings last season for most points scored and most field goals made in one game. Greer also hit the boards hard on two sepa-rate occasions, grabbing a team high 19 rebounds against Missouri Western on Dec. 16.

“I am really looking forward to watching the upperclassmen lead the squad this season,” said Coach Meri-weather. “We’ll need lots of leadership out of them and I think they’ll step up to the occasion.”

Rounding out the top six is sopho-more guard Traci Oden. Oden had an impressive freshman year, playing in all

27 games and starting in three. She scored 88 total points and is the top returner with the best free throw shot percentage (.786), making 11-of-14 free throws. A Richmond, Mo. na-tive, Oden played her prep ball at Richmond High School. She had 65 total rebounds, adding two blocks and 16 steals.

The Pirates will also get help off the bench from players who saw limited action in the 2006 season. Seniors Amanda Green and Jenicia Stephens, juniors Jessica Stanley, Cherrale Ricks and Chante Dean, and sophomore Amy Andrews will all look to aid Park in the 2007-08 season.

Dean, Stanley and Ricks all checked out of the 2006-07 season early due to injuries. Green did not see any action while Stanley played in five games and started in four. In 139 minutes player, Stanley scored 41 total points and had four assists. Ricks started and played in four games, scoring 46 points and grabbing 26 total rebounds.

Andrews appeared in 26 games as a true freshman, starting in four. The 5’8 guard scored 49 points and had 16 as-sists. Five of those 16 assists were in the overtime win over Peru State College.

2007-2008 NewcomerSThe Pirates add seven total new-

comers, four transfers and three fresh-men, to the 2007-2008 squad. Ashley Birch comes to Parkville, Mo. from Missouri Southern State University. She played in 15 games and shot .500 percent from the field. The guard from Kansas City, Kan. posted 29 offensive rebounds and 51 defensive.

Park will get some help down in the blocks this season with the addition of Daniella Martins, a 6-5 junior forward. Originally from Belem, Brazil, Martins transferred from Southeastern Oklahoma State. She started her collegiate basket-ball career at Crowder College in Neosho, Mo.

The Pirates also welcome transfer forwards Ranae Brown and Lauren Pee-bles. Brown, a 6-2 junior, relocated from Pratt Community College and Peebles, a 6-0 junior, played at John Wood Commu-nity College.

Rounding out the newcomers are freshmen Brianne Edwards, Cortney Jones and Stefany Jones. Edwards, a War-rensburg, Mo. native, played high school basketball in Warrensburg. The 5-10 forward earned second and first team all-conference honors, a spot on the KM2U Dream Team, was All-Johnson County and was a All-Area Sedalia Democrat.

C. Jones is a freshman from Kansas City, Kan. The 5-6 guard attended F.L. Schlagle High School. S. Jones, a Pleasant Hill, Mo. native, attended Pleasant Hill High School. The 5-5 guard was first team all-conference and all-district and on the KM2U Dream Team.

Park University men’s and women’s basketball enters its eighth season of

play inside Breckon Sports Center, post-ing an overall record of 113 - 66 in seven seasons. Named after longtime Park Univer-sity President Donald Breckon, the Breck-on Sports Center was built in 2000 and houses the Park University athletic de-partment offices. The 1,000-seat capac-ity arena in the west dome plays host to men’s and women’s basketball and men’s and women’s volleyball games. The east dome serves as practice fa-cility for not only the volleyball teams, but also is a year-round indoor home to the soccer, baseball and softball programs.

meN’S baSketball iNSide breckoN SPortS ceNter Park men’s basketball opened the Breckon Sports Center in the 2000-01 sea-son, posting a home record of 10-6 under head coach and current Director of Ath-letics Claude English, marking the first of four seasons inside the building that Park has posted a 10-win-or-better season at home. The Pirates went 10-3 inside Breckon in 2001-02 before setting a school record with 12 home wins in 2002-03. The Pirates finished the season 12-2 at home. Park added six wins to the Breckon total in 2003-04 and nine more in Eng-lish’s final season, 2004-05.

The Jason Kline Era began inside Breckon Sports Center in 2005-06, and Kline’s Pirates grabbed six of their 10 wins on the year at home. The Pirates tied the school record for wins inside Breckon Sports Center in 2006-07, going 12-1 at home on the way to an NAIA Independent Region Tourna-ment Championship and a Sweet 16 ap-pearance in the 2007 Buffalo Funds-NAIA Division I Men’s Basketball Tournament.

meriweatHer iNSide breckoN SPortS ceNterHead coach Joe C. Meriweather is the only coach in Park women’s basketball history to have coached inside Breckon.

In seven seasons inside Breckon Sports Center, coach Meriweather posts an 48-33 overall record.

Coach Meriweather led the 2003-04 team to its best finish in Park women’s basketball history, posting a 22-3 over-all record. The Pirates won 14 games in-side Breckon Sports Center that season, knocking off four nationally ranked NAIA teams inside the domes. The 2005-06 season was also a his-torical season, as coach Meriweather led the Pirates to its first NAIA National Tour-nament appearance. Park went 10-12 inside Breckon, highlighted by an eight-game home winning streak.
