Our new HP technology has allowed us to offer computer trainings, including two“Introduction to Computer Basics” workshop series. During the workshops studentswere taught the basics of operating a computer, how to create and work with MicrosoftWord documents and Microsoft Excel documents, how to use the Internet, and how tocreate an e-mail account and send/receive e-mails. Continuation workshops willinclude items such as How to Create Business Cards and Develop a Website for yourbusiness.

Our computers facilitate the delivery and training of ourFarmer Education Program curriculum as a supplementaryresource during group and individual exercises andactivities that correspond to the topics being covered inclass. The Computer Basics workshops were offered as aprimer to the course in order to introduce our low-incomeclients, some of which had never even turned a machineon, to computers. This technology has greatly improvedour service delivery.

As a result of our computer trainings, farmershave gained the confidence to begin usingcomputers in their day-to-day lives and in theirbusiness. In surveys given to workshopparticipants, 100% of the respondents felt thatcomputers are a very important tool for theirbusiness development. All expressed a desire tocontinue learning in order to simplify their workin the future. Some workshop participants havepurchased computers in order to continue theirlearning at home. Others have gained thecourage to use the computers that they own buthave never touched in the past.

Farmers use the computers to search for vital informationon the Internet such as current price indices for organicvegetable crops or to review pest disease and weedcontrol methods via university extension websites andonline resource guides. They use Excel spreadsheets toconstruct crop production plans and profit and loss cashflow projections. They also construct yearly crop calendarsand create their farm business plans using wordprocessing applications.
