Athens Tech:Intro, Advanced I, Water Quality, Plant Tissue Culture & Hydroponics Labs

June 11-15th

We are happy to announce that the Georgia

Bioscience Technology Institute (GBTI) here at Athens Technical College was awarded an” Improving

Teacher Quality Grant” for the 2012-2013 year. So join us in our brand new Life Sciences building and labs as we again offer our hands-on biotechnology based lab training for teachers this summer. Since August of 2007, the GBTI equipment loan/kit program has served 394 teachers in 49 counties and through them has reached almost 30,000 students.

Science education is changing! GBTI activities align with the new Biotechnology programs and Georgia standards. This June, we are again offering our Introductory & Advanced I sessions along with Advanced II classes: Plant Tissue Culture and new Water Quality & Hydroponics labs. This year’s water Quality class will be taught at the Sandy Creek Nature Center here in Athens GA. The new Hydroponics lab will be taught by Christina Hylton. These sessions & classes should give you the confidence and skills to perform some great activities

with your students.

Biotechnology is creating a world filled with opportunities for our students. To help them succeed, energized and up-to-date teachers are essential. Together, we can sow seeds of innovation which will lead to many exciting new discoveries.

Please take a moment to fill out this registration form. You can either print and mail or fax it to us or fill it out electronically and email it.

Note: You will earn 3 pLUs for the basic courses and 1 PLU could be earned by taking 2 of the ADV II lab courses together.

Also, fourth day of the Intro class will feature a tour of local Biotech employers in the Athens area.

Stipends will be available for travel for teachers from “High Need” counties.

We look forward to working with you! If you should have any questions please feel free to contact me.

Introductory session activities:

DNA extraction(A quick but powerful, human cheek cell DNA activity)Micropipetting Activity (Learn how to use standard laboratory pipettes and have fun while doing it in this easy to do

exercise.)Bio-Rad ELISA kit(Simulate the outbreak of disease in your classroom.)Bio-Rad Restriction digest & analysis of Lambda DNA kit(Restriction enzymes are used to cut Lambda DNA and electrophoresis helps separate and visualize the fragments.)Bio-Rad pGlo bacterial transformation kit(Jellyfish genes make the invisible-visible!)

Advanced I session activities:

PCR on your own DNA extracted from an eye brow hair(Just like the crime scene investigators do.)Protein separation techniques(Learn to use protein electrophoresis & SDS page to compare muscle tissue of different fish samples. Is that crab or white fish on your dinner plate?)Bio-Rad GMO investigator kit(Gather sample foods from your grocery store, extract DNA, amplify it via PCR, and use gel electrophoresis to identify the presence/absence of GMO sequences.)Biofuels Lab(Learn how to run Bio-Rad’s most recent kit Biofuel Enzymes. Measure the enzymatic activity of cellobiase and identify the optimal conditions for the enzyme. The reaction of cellobiase is important in the process of making cellulosic ethanol.)Bio Informatics(Take the data you generated in the lab and use it to learn how to use the bioinformatics web sites.)

Advanced II Classes:

Plant Tissue Culture Lab:(Learn to use African violet plants to teach cloning in your classroom. Based on Carol Stiff Ph.D.’s, Kitchen Culture lab please join us this summer and learn plant tissue culture and some other related activities that you can do in your classrooms)

Water Quality/Stream Health Lab:(This lab will be taught at the Sandy Creek Nature Center in Athens GA. by Naturalist Kate Mowbray who also is a trainer for Adopt –A-Stream)Hydroponics Lab(This lab will be taught by Christina Hylton a science teacher at Rutland Academy in Athens, GA.. Christina has taught teachers and students about hydroponics and will be gearing her class to teachers who want to set up their own hydroponics lab. She will discuss grants and other cost saving ideas.)

(Funded by a Georgia improving Teacher Quality grant)
