Located in the engineering capital of Canada, The University of Calgary’s Schulich School of Engineering is one of the country’s top engineering schools. The Schulich School is home to 35 internationally acclaimed chairs and professors and offers award-winning design courses, the largest work internship program of its kind in Canada, and the Maier Student Leadership Program. It boasts one of the highest percentages of female faculty members and students, offers the largest engineering entrance scholarships in the country, and awards $500,000 annually for student activities and travel through the Schulich Student Activities Fund. The vision of the Schulich School of Engineering is to be at the forefront in Canada in the development of engineering leaders, for internationally acclaimed research, academic innovation and excellence, and service to the community and the profession.

About the Schulich School of Engineering

About the Event Sponsor The Student Excellence Awards is sponsored by the Engineering Associates Program (EAP). The EAP is a partnership between the Schulich School of Engineering, University of Calgary, and industry partners. The goal of the program is to build and maintain a world class engineering school that will exceed society’s expectations and needs for engineering education, research and service. Members of EAP network through a variety of professional development and social activities such as monthly breakfast meetings, the Student Excellence Awards, the Dean’s Holiday Reception, and more. The Engineering Associates Program also makes up the Schulich School of Engineering’s senior industry advisory body. The program is in its 18th successful year.

Message from the DeanThe 18th Annual Schulich School of Engineering Student Excellence Awards is a celebration of student achievement and the philanthropists who have generously invested in their future. It is an occasion to acknowledge the dedication, innovation, community contributions and academic excellence of students at the Schulich School of Engineering and this opportunity for student recipients and their families to meet the benefactors of these unique scholarship and award programs.

At the Schulich School of Engineering, we believe in rewarding students for their hard work and accomplishments, especially those who have gone above and beyond what is required of them. Student awards have a significant impact on the school by helping us attract and retain top quality students who graduate to become the next generation of engineering leaders.

Schulich engineers are creative problem solvers who tackle the challenges of the 21st century. They are immersed in rich scientific, cultural and professional experiences. The Student Excellence Awards celebration lets us honour these students who are among the world’s best.

George RoterKeynote Speaker

George Roter has been recognized as one of Canada’s emerging leaders in the non-profit sector. He strongly believes that Canadians are passionate about driving social change both within our country’s borders and abroad. He has dedicated the past 8 years of his life to building organizations that engage a broad cross-section of Canadians, and specifically foster the involvement of our country’s next generation of leaders.

Most of that dedication and effort has been focused on building Engineers Without Borders, an organization that, together with Parker Mitchell, he co-founded and where he continues to serve as Co-CEO. While completing his Bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering at the University of Waterloo, George became aware of the complex challenges facing three billion people around the world who live in poverty. He also saw an opportunity to mobilize engineers and their unique problem-solving approach as agents for social change. And so he co-founded Engineers Without Borders.
