Who We Are

Intercambio is a diverse group of 400 dedicated volunteers teaching life-skills based English classes to 1,000 immigrants working to elevate themselves. Since 2001, our independent nonprofi t organization has been fulfi lling its mission by steadily increasing the number of volunteers and students we work with.

Our Mission

Intercambio de Comunidades’ mission is to build respectful communities and broaden opportunities for immigrants through language education, cultural exchange, and friendship. We provide:

1. Low-cost/no-cost individualized English classes, taught by volunteers at students’ homes, places of work, or public buildings.

2. Community resource information and workshops.

3. Intercultural social events.

Th ese activities foster the sharing of languages, cultures and friendship. Our vision is to create more respectful and inclusive communities where all members can com-municate, participate, and contribute.

“Learning English restores the ability to communicate.” Guillermo Valenzuela, Intercambio Student

Th e best way to learn about cultural diff erences is to experience and discuss them with people from diff erent back-grounds, but this rarely happens in most of society without a catalyst like Intercambio. We take people out of their comfort zones and use an effi cient system of language learning, trainings, and curriculum focused on cross-cultural learning that bring people together and break down cultural barriers. In addition, we are extremely intentional in our services and values about how we can learn from and deepen our respect of cultural diff erences. It is this intentional-ity that makes cross-cultural learning happen.

Intercambio makes it possible for understanding, kind, and welcoming people to play a concrete role in helping to ef-fectively guide motivated immigrants through the extremely diffi cult process of acculturation and learning English.

Supporting Intercambio or participating as a student, volunteer, or donor is a peaceful, positive, and concrete way to take action and help build respect and social capital between cultures. Th ank you for your support and your invest-ment in our community.

STUDENTS

80% feel more comfortable living in their community.

66% gained a better understanding of U.S. culture.

66% can better communicate with co-workers, bosses, and clients who speak English.

62% are better able to talk to their children’s teachers and help with school-work.

55% are better able to talk to doctors, nurses, and dentists without an inter-preter.

36% got a better job, a promotion, or a salary increase.

VOLUNTEERS

82% have gained a better understand-ing of other cultures.

80% have a better understanding of immigrant struggles.

76% have formed intercultural friend-ships.

32% have had their career goals im-pacted by their Intercambio experience.

Our students complete goal questionnaires at the beginning and end of each semester, and our volunteers provide online feedback twice a year about their experience with Intercambio. Th ese results tell us that our mission is being accomplished.

Students and Volunteers

“As our volunteers and students work together toward the goal of learning English, they demonstrate the aspects of real community, things like self-sacrifi ce, dedication

to a vision, compassion, understanding, compromise, and fl exibility. It is these pieces that make the whole of the Intercambio experience for me one to cherish and, more

importantly, one to impart on others.”Eliberto Mendoza, Intercambio Program Director, Longmont

“I have been tutoring my student, Veronica, for nearly a year now. What started off as bi-weekly

English assignments became a friendship of conversation including politics, history, the state of health care in the U.S., cultural diversity, etc. What I have learned from my Intercambio experience is that it is essential to reach outside of

our usual circumstances to gain a greater understanding of each other. Intercambio does that in a way that not only provides English

to new immigrants, but also creates an environment which fosters

friendship, cultural understanding, and enriches lives.”

Christine Berg, Intercambio Volunteer

“What surprises me most about Intercambio is not how much our students learn from our teachers, but how much

our teachers learn from our students. It’s exciting to hear our volunteers share what they have learned about a culture or community they may have otherwise never

experienced.”Niraj Naik, Board Member

Page 11: 2008 ann report - Intercambio Uniting Communities€¦ · In 2008, Intercambio hosted many diverse intercultural activities to help integrate our community and build social capital

Language education and cultural exchange are needed in many communities, and Intercambio offers a transformational approach to meet these needs on a small budget. In Boulder County we serve 975 immigrants per year with a budget of $503,000 by leveraging 45,000 hours of volunteer time.

With cultural rifts further dividing our country and financial resources diminishing, we need to spread efficient programs like Intercambio. For more information about how to help us expand our model into other communities, contact us or visit our website: www.intercambioweb.org. With more people involved, we can build more respectful communities. Thank you!
