2008 Red and White Burgundy

Low yields of ripe yet fresh wines with plenty of concentration

Despite a poor spring and summer, excellent autumn weather from 14th September to the end of the harvesttransformed the vintage. 2008 produced low yields (20-30% less than 2007) of ripe and fleshy red and whitewines with an attractive freshness. The unusual combination of concentrated wines with considerable weightand density yet lovely freshness, caused by maturation by evaporation, produces quite extrovert wines whichcan be enjoyed relatively early, but the best will keep well. The quality hierarchy is well respected, so tradingup is worthwhile.

As ever style and quality vary widely between producers. We encourage you to read the individual notes onthe producers and the wines which give a better feel to how a wine tastes than broad generalisations.

Prices down With a more favourable exchange rate, the majority of prices are lower than last year.

Strict selection We deal with only those producers we consider to be the best in their categories. They maintain lower yieldsthan the average grower, and so their wines are always proportionately better than the reputation of the vintage because of their readiness to sacrifice yield to produce ripe and healthy grapes.

MACONNAISDomaine Saint Denis, Lugny

Hubert Laferrère reports that 2008 has produced crisp wines from low yields, 48hl/ha, of healthy grapes.

1. BU45611 Mâcon-Chardonnay * £105Rich and honeyed nose. Palate round yet firm. This is a delightfully balanced wine of excellent quality. Bottled with a synthetic closure. 2011–2013.

Domaine de la Soufrandise, Pouilly-FuisséThis domaine makes very well-balanced wines, which are assembled from over 20 different vineyardparcels, with the aid of their UK agent Roy Richards. It is always a challenge to produce wines which showthe opulence of this richly flavoured appellation but do not become top heavy. This domaine succeedsadmirably.

2. BU45301 Pouilly-Fuissé Vieilles Vignes * £145 Ripe, rich yet balanced with an attractive freshness, this is an impressive Pouilly. 2011–2013.

The weather, and how the best producers reacted to itThe story of the year was that after a poor spring and summer, the crop was saved by low yields and an excellent autumn.

Poor spring and summerMay alternated between the cool, the warm and the wet producing a strong threat of mildew. Flowering tookplace in June (between 10th and 19th at Bonneau du Martray) in cool and frequently rainy conditions leadingto poor fruit set. July alternated between the cool and the hot. August was poor.

Low yieldsA combination of natural factors continually reduced yield, including coulure (poor fruit set) at flowering, terrible localised hail storms (26th July in the Côte D’Or, and 7th and 15th August in the Mâconnais), and the north wind at harvest which reduced yield by about 10%.

The best producers cut the crop Good growers do not sit idly by hoping for the best. Instead they speeded up the retarded ripening caused by the poor weather by cutting off grapes in July and August.

Excellent autumn weather From 14th September the weather changed dramatically. Blue skies appeared, and a powerful north windbegan to blow. The windy conditions dried out the vineyards, diminished the threat of fungal diseases such as mildew and botrytis, and accelerated the maturation process.

Concentration by evaporation The yield was reduced by about 10% as part of the water content of the grapes evaporated, concentrating not only the sugar content, but the acidity too. During the more usual maturation by photosynthesis, acidityreduces as sugar rises. In 2008, the grapes are ripe yet fresh due to the higher than normal levels of sugar and acidity.

Harvest Most began the harvest between 18th and 27th September in the Côte de Beaune and 26th September and 4th October in the Côte de Nuits. The wind had reduced the risk of rot. There was a little botrytis for someproducers, normally in the younger and lower-lying vineyards, which is easily removed on sorting tables. Those who looked after their vineyards and kept the pressure of mildew and oidium at bay were able to harvest healthy grapes.

All the wines listed here are available on our website www.thewinesociety.com/openingoffer

COTE D’ORComte Armand, Domaine des Epeneaux, Pommard

Benjamin Leroux and his team worked hard over the summer. He took no holiday, and managed the work inthe vineyard, aiming to reduce the crop to 30hl/ha, and remove excess leaves to improve air circulation andprevent disease. The change in the weather on 14th September was accompanied by a strong north windwhich probably further reduced the yield by 10%. The selection for Clos des Epeneaux this year is moregeological than by vine age. It contains wine made from the top and bottom parts of the Clos, averaging 50 and 55 years of age respectively. The remainder is declassified into their Pommard Premier Cru.

3. BU45641 Pommard Premier Cru Clos des Epeneaux £270Made from just 25hl/ha, this has fine, intense pinot aromas on the nose. The palate is currently a little closed but has plenty of concentration and ripe tannins which will give this a long life. 2014–2022.

Domaine Denis Bachelet, Gevrey-ChambertinDenis Bachelet made superb wines in 2008 which are highly recommended. Very old vines and small yieldstogether with a light hand in the cellar produce elegant and intensely flavoured wines.

4. BU45711 Côtes de Nuits Villages £105 Fresh, bright, pretty pinot. 2013–2015.

5. BU45721 Gevrey-Chambertin Vieilles Vignes £175Lovely mid-weight Gevrey with elegance and finesse to the fore. 2012–2017.

6. BU45731 Gevrey-Chambertin Premier Cru Corbeaux Vieilles Vignes £255Old vineyard planted in 1920 producing small, intensely flavoured berries which translate into exquisite, perfumed wine. 2014–2020.

Domaine Ghislaine Barthod, Chambolle-MusignyGhislaine Barthod has produced another lovely vintage here. These graceful wines are amongst the very bestof the commune.

7. BU45411 Bourgogne Rouge £65Few Bourgognes are this well balanced. A baby Chambolle. 2013–2015.

8. BU45421 Chambolle-Musigny £148Pretty sweet fruit and fine boned structure. Lovely Chambolle. 2013–2016.

9. BU45431 Chambolle-Musigny Premier Cru Beaux Bruns £243This is one of the richest tasting Chambolles, with a little more flesh than most of the crus. 2014–2020.

10. BU45451 Chambolle-Musigny Premier Cru Cras £255From very shallow soil barely covering the limestone rock, this is lean and mineral in its youth, but in time blossoms into one of the finest and most intensely flavoured of all Chambolles. 2016–2022.

11. BU45441 Chambolle-Musigny Premier Cru Combottes £260Elegant, intensely flavoured wine with silky tannins. 2014–2020.

Domaine Henri Boillot, VolnayHenri Boillot is making some of the very best Puligny available today. He works with low yields, 38hl/ha in 2008, and has the flexibility of mind to react to whatever the weather throws at him. He uses 350-litrebarrels, instead of the usual 228-litre, of which 75% were new for Clos de la Mouchère, which he finds better preserves the natural carbon dioxide and gives just the subtlest hint of oak.

12. BU46051 Puligny-Montrachet Premier Cru Perrières, Clos de la Mouchère £275Made from 80-year-old vines planted on low-vigour rootstock, this is fine, elegant and has a very long finish. Superb. 2012–2015.

Domaine Bonneau du Martray, Pernand-VergelessesJean-Charles le Bault de la Morinière reports that 2008 was a challenging year in the vineyard. A poor flowering was responsible for the low yields. Conditions favoured mildew so many interventions were necessary to avoid disease.

13. BU45821 Corton-Charlemagne Grand Cru £398Made from very small yields of 32hl/ha (authorized yield 48hl/ha). The aromas are fine and fresh and the palate is rich with very good length of flavour. Impressive. 2014–2017.

Domaine Alain Burguet, Gevrey-ChambertinAlain is harvesting a little later than previously, and extracting a little less, which is producing slightly richerand rounder wines with sweeter tannins.

14. BU45651 Gevrey-Chambertin Mes Favorites Vieilles Vignes £195From vines over 60 years of age, this is ripe and rich Gevrey. 2013–2017.

Domaine Camus-Bruchon, Savigny-lès-BeauneThis domaine made very good 2008s. Luc Camus twice removed grapes in the vineyard over the summer, reducing yields to speed up the ripening because of the poor summer weather. The crop was thus reducedto 30% less than normal when the weather improved on 14th September and the wind and sun furtherreduced yields. He started picking on 27th September and harvested beautifully ripe grapes because of thelow yields. You can taste the ripeness in the wines.

15. BU45191 Savigny-lès-Beaune Pimientiers £80From vineyards planted in 1935, this is lovely red-fruit Savigny. 2011–2013.

16. BU45201 Savigny-lès-Beaune Aux Grands Liards Vieilles Vignes * £85From two parcels planted in 1913 and 1922 this is intensely flavoured wine with a soft and appealing palate. 2011–2013.

17. BU45211 Savigny-lès-Beaune Premier Cru Gravains £85Planted in 1971, this explodes with lovely pure pinot aromas. The palate is a little more structured and needs a little longer to round out. 2012–2014.

19. BU45231 Savigny-lès-Beaune Premier Cru Narbontons £105Situated on the sandier soils close to the Beaune appellation, this is sweeter, softer and rounder than most Savignys, and quite Beaune like.2012–2015.

Domaine Sylvain Cathiard, Vosne-RomanéeSylvain has extended his cellar and now has a lovely two-aisle vaulted cellar dressed with stone to maturehis wines. His son Sebastian, after working in New Zealand, has returned home to partner his father.Exquisite wines as usual here.

Domaine Robert Chevillon, Nuits-St-GeorgesOne of the top cellars in 2008, the wines have a freshness and vitality that is invigorating. Chevillon report a tiny bit of rot in the bourgogne and village vineyards, but none in the crus. This was removed before vatting. They began harvesting on 25th September.

24. BU45831 Nuits-St-Georges * £138 Intense, vibrant fruit and lively palate. A delight. 2011–2016.

25. BU45851 Nuits-St-Georges Premier Cru Roncières £185 Lovely black-fruit pinot noir, with sweet fruit on the palate and round tannins. 2013–2018.

Domaine Jean-Noël Gagnard, Chassagne-MontrachetFor me this is one of the greatest white wine cellars in Burgundy, producing wines which rival the very best Puligny and Meursault made. The wines are good every year, excellent examples of their type and never marked by new oak. They keep and develop beautifully.

Bienvenues-Bâtard-Montrachet Grand Cru * -A step up in the hierarchy to grand cru this has another dimension compared to the premiers crus. Quite firm and structured to start, the flavour continues to unfold on the palate and will further do so with time. Made from 45-year-old vines. 2013–2016. This wine is featured in mixed case OC2496 only.

Bâtard-Montrachet Grand Cru * -Rich, broad and powerful this is closed at present but will develop superbly. Made from 31-year-old vines. 2013–2016. This wine is featured in mixed case OC2496 only.

Chevalier-Montrachet Grand Cru * -Fine, linear wine of length rather than breadth and enlivened with a spark of brilliance this is supremely elegant wine. Made from 33-year-old vines. 2015–2018. This wine is featured in mixed case OC2496 only.

Domaine Maume, Gevrey-ChambertinMaume are a tiny domaine and because they are so little known they are very competitively priced. Their style is derived from old vines harvested very late producing round and generous reds which willappeal to those who sometimes find Burgundy a little austere.

65. BU45551 Gevrey-Chambertin * £105 Round, rich and generous Gevrey. 2012–2015.

66. BU45561 Gevrey-Chambertin en Pallud £125Slightly more structured wine than the straight village wine, Pallud is denser and more powerful. 2013–2016.

67. BU45571 Gevrey-Chambertin Premier Cru Lavaux St Jacques £248 This has a lovely freshness and verve to it. Situated in the cool valley behind the village, La Combe de Lavaux, the grapes retain a little more acidity. 2014–2018.

68. BU45581 Charmes-Chambertin Grand Cru £340Only two barrels or 50 dozen bottles produced, we count ourselves lucky to be able to buy this excellent Charmes, which is full, powerful and extrovert. A joy. 2015–2020.

69. BU45591 Mazis-Chambertin Grand Cru £340Big and structured wine, this has plenty of firm but ripe tannins which give this wine the greatest ageing potential of those in the cellar. It needs time but rewards it. 2016–2025.

Domaine De Montille, VolnayEtienne de Montille has made stunning 2008s. This is one of the best cellars in the vintage. The house style prizes elegance above all and there is minimal chaptalisation. For the red wines, Etienne varies the percentage of whole clusters admitted to the vats depending on the year. This year he felt the stems wereripe and so many of the wines are 100% whole cluster. Used by Domaines Potel, Dujac, De la Romanée-Conti amongst others, the whole cluster technique, when appropriately used, promotes beautiful floral aromas, contributes sweetness to the palate, and a certain complexity of character not found in completelydestemmed wines.

70. BU45311 Beaune Premier Cru Grèves £170Very fine and stylish Grèves made in the supremely elegant de Montille style. Made with 66% whole clusters. Delicious. 2013–2018.

71. BU45321 Volnay Premier Cru Champans £243Lovely floral nose and superbly sweet palate, quite round with very ripe tannins. 66% whole clusters. 2014–2020.

72. BU45331 Volnay Premier Cru Taillepieds £250Outstanding Volnay, with fine nose, creamy palate and impressive length of flavour. 100% whole clusters. 2014–2022.

73. BU45351 Pommard Premier Cru Rugiens £310Intense floral aromas and palate of great length. Again remarkable sweetness on the palate. 100% whole clusters. 2014–2022.

74. BU45361 Vosne-Romanée Premier Cru Malconsorts £500Superb wine. The nose is still developing but the palate is beautifully balanced, very refined, with tannins of the utmost sweetness. A delight. 100% whole clusters. 2014–2025.

75. BU45371 Puligny-Montrachet Premier Cru Cailleret £380Forming the northern boundary of grand cru Montrachet, this is an outstanding premier cru. Remarkable elegance combined with impressive length of flavour, this is very fine indeed. 2012–2015.

Domaine Denis Mortet, Gevrey-ChambertinDenis’s son Arnaud is continuing his father’s meticulous attention to detail in the vineyard, which includedtwo green harvests in 2008. One in July, where he left six bunches per vine, and one in August where he left an average of just four and a half, resulting in a harvest of 35% less than normal. He was rewardedwith healthy grapes averaging 12.5% potential alcohol. However, in the cellar he is extracting a little lessthan his father and reducing the new oak a little on the lesser wines. The wines are fresher and livelier than previously.

76. BU44931 Bourgogne Cuvée de Noble Souche £95Fresh and lively black-fruit pinot, lightly oaked. Delicious. 2012–2016.

77. BU44941 Marsannay Longeroies £135Pretty fruit and a refreshing, elegant palate make this a delight to drink, and very moreish.2013–2017.

78. BU44951 Gevrey-Chambertin £225Made from vines averaging 35 years of age, matured in 60% new oak, this is bright and attractive Gevrey. 2013–2017.

79. BU44961 Gevrey Chambertin Vieilles Vignes £250Made from a number of vineyards including En Deré and En Champs which average 60–70 years of age, this is matured in 70% new oak. Ripe, rich and densely flavoured. 2013–2018.

80. BU44991 Gevrey-Chambertin Premier Cru Lavaux St Jacques £395This is slightly richer than the Champeaux, but in the same vein. Impressive length of flavour. 2013–2022.

81. BU44971 Chambolle-Musigny Premier Cru Beaux Bruns £395Pretty, intensely-flavoured Chambolle made with a lighter touch than previously to emphasize the delicacy of the appellation. 2013–2018.

83. BU45001 Bourgogne Blanc £80This is 100% barrel fermented with 15% new oak and is fresher and less oaky than previously. Round yet fresh, this is ideally drunk in its first flush of youth. 2011–2012.

Domaine Potel, Nuits-St-Georges Nicolas Potel finally set up his own domaine in 2007, and this is his second vintage. He has split with the négociant company that owns the label ‘Nicolas Potel’, with which he now has no contact. He has set upin Beaune in an attractive old winery which he is steadily doing up. He has made very good 2008s. The wines come in numbered bottles conditioned with sealing wax instead of capsules.

90. BU46021 St Aubin Premier Cru En Remilly £120Exquisite St Aubin from a vineyard on the hill just behind Montrachet, where a tiny layer of soil over outcropping rock produces a mineral wine of crystalline purity. 2011–2014.

92. BU46041 Puligny-Montrachet Premier Cru Folatières £265Racy, vivid Puligny from a top hillside vineyard showing all the characteristic qualities of this great village. 2011–2014.

Domaine Georges Roumier, Chambolle-MusignyTwo green harvests which removed the less ripe grapes, cut the yield and allowed the reduced crop to ripen are responsible for the success of the vintage here. They began on 27th September and harvestedhealthy grapes.

93. BU45051 Chambolle-Musigny £155Perfumed, red-fruit pinot with a fresh and lively palate. 2012–2017.

94. BU45061 Morey St Denis Premier Cru Clos de la BussièreIntense aromas and a soft, generous palate. 2012–2018. £205

Etienne Sauzet, Puligny-MontrachetGérard Boudot reports that an uneven flowering led to lowish yields and concentrated wines. A little botrytisdeveloped in some of the vineyards (the less noble aspects were removed on the selection tables) so somewines possess a lightly honeyed character which is appealing.

98. BU45101 Chassagne-Montrachet £138Made from the excellent Enceignères vineyard, this is a round and honeyed wine, very appealing. 2011–2013.

101. BU45131 Puligny-Montrachet Premier Cru Referts * £238From a vineyard towards the base of the slope, Referts has deepish soil and produces a broad, rich wine with a hint of Meursult butteriness. 2011–2013.

Domaine Tollot-Beaut, Chorey-lès-BeauneThis dedicated domaine takes great care in the vineyard and maintains low yields. They produce generouslyflavoured wines from modest appellations. That is a very welcome, if rare, combination in Burgundy.

105. BU45621 Chorey-lès-Beaune * £73Plump and fruity Burgundy offered at a very attractive price. 2012–2015.

106. BU45631 Savigny-lès-Beaune Premier Cru Lavières * £9825% less crop than normal because of hail, this is correspondingly more concentrated than usual. Lovely sweet fruit and light vanilla from the oak. 2012–2016.

Jean-Marc Vincent, SantenayThis is a wonderful cellar in 2008. I am full of admiration for Jean-Marc Vincent and his delightful wifeAnne-Marie and their wines. Inheriting his grandfather’s vines, Jean-Marc has made a huge success of thisdomaine through back-breaking work, huge ingenuity, radical thinking in the vineyard and all with very little money. He works with small yields and then extracts very little resulting in naturally balanced wineswith a beautiful texture. These 2008s are some of the best wines he has made and are highly recommended.

107. BU45741 Santenay Rouge Premier Cru Beaurepaire £98Lovely juicy Santenay, ripe, yet fresh. 2013–2018.
