2008SCHOLARSHIP
DINNER DANCEOn June 19 2008 once again we filled Russo's on the Bay to honor our scholarship win-
ners. The Columbia Association awarded over $16,000 to our children.
We were blessed to have Frank Pizzaro, Engine 76, perform the National Anthem and
FF Stephen Inguagiato, Engine 303, performs the Italian National anthem. Stephen also sere-
naded us during our dinner "Meraviglioso"!
Our "2008 Man of the Year" Stuart Salles Esquire honored us with the history of the
Columbia association. Stu has been legal council for our association with 4 different presidents.
He spoke of his family and friends. It was a who's who of our association as he reminisces
through the years. One of Stu's guests was past president Jake Schavone. It was great to see
Jake and we wish him continue success and good health.
Russo's on the Bay, Frank Russo Jr. Humanitarian, and Frank asked us to present him
his award in private (which we honored). Frank Russo Jr spoke to the board of directors about
his Italian Heritage, and his gratitude for our award.
Vascular Diagnostics, Sandra Rossano Director, Our Special recognition award recipi-
ent expressed her great sense of gratitude and accomplishments to our organization and we can
never show enough appreciation for Vascular diagnostics dedication to the health and well being
of the FDNY. We all have excuses, but there is really no reason not to schedule a visit. It may
just save your life.
The dance floor was packed through the night as the Chris Michaels Band kept us hop-
ping. Our bellies were stuffed thanks to Frank Russo's and his exceptional staff.
A special thanks to all our scholarship contributors, journal purchasers, and to all the
participants of the Columbia Association events. All of our events fund our scholarship
program. We thank all who attended and we hope to see you next year for our 75th Scholarship
Dinner Dance. Mark your calendar June 18, 2009.

SANTA BARBARA
The Barbarian name is of Greek origin and means "alien". It is narrated that Barbarian of Nocodemia it was locked up in a tower and then lead to the martyrdom for
its indomata faith to the cristianità, osteggiata from the father pay Dioscoro that, 4 December (approximately the 288 d.C.) was incenerito from a celestial lightning
symbol of the dead women immediate without the possibility to redimersi.
After the sad event that they carried to the martyrdom of Barbara Saint, the turned cult to she was strong and left its prints, of time, at a
distance still today tangible.
Protecting of the artificers, artillerymen, miners, carpenters, National Fire Department, it comes also invocata like protecting against the
lightnings and the dead women unexpected.
In the Saint world Barbara it is venerata in Switzerland, Spain, former Czechoslovakia, Egypt, Belgium, Holland, England, Austria,
Germany, Rumania and France.
For this reason we want to express our acknowledgment to the martyrdom of the 343 National Fire Departments with to the dead men of the Department
of human Police and to the migliaia of screw, through the union in the faith and the hope in the peace.
This gesture not only enriches the spiritualità and the presence of the love, but the colleague also to the gesta of the saint to martyr.

GERARD BARBARA FDNYPromotional Scholarship
Jerry knew the importance of being prepared for the promotional exams. Healways felt by moving up the ladder, he could make a difference. Studying forpromotion can be very costly. The cost of books, materials and school canadd up. When Jerry was a young family man studying for promotion, Jerry andhis wife Joann had a family meeting. Together they agreed to take $60 out oftheir food budget to pay for a book that Gerry needed for an upcoming promo-tional exam. Through the next few years they worked together to finance theirchildren’s college education. Joanne does not want any family to have to makethat decision again. The Barbara family has finance two scholarships (one for aFirefighter, one for a Lieutenant) for members of the Columbia Associationpreparing for promotion. Hello and welcome to this featured column of "La Sotto Voce" designed toshare information regarding your health for you and your families. Wehave all heard the saying "we are what we eat". Keeping in mind we can-not change the heredity risk factors, but we can be more thoughtful whenwe choose what we eat.
VEGETARIAN EATINGVegetarians are less likely to develop heart disease, high blood
pressure, type 2 diabetes, obesity, and some types of cancer. This isbecause properly planned vegetarian diets typically contain more fiber, phytonutrients, and less saturated fat and cholesterol than animal-baseddiets.
The key to a healthy vegetarian diet is to eat a variety of foods.Plan meals to include fruits, vegetables, leafy greens, whole grains, nuts, seeds, and legumes.
There are different types of vegetarians:n Vegans (VEE-gans): Exclude all animal products, including milk, cheese, other dairy items, and eggs.n Lacto (milk) - ovo (eggs) Vegetarians: Eat grains, vegetables, fruits, legumes, seeds, nuts, dairy products, and eggs. They don't eat meat, fish, and fowl.n Lacto-Vegetarians: Eat dairy, grains, vegetables, fruits, legumes seeds, and nuts. They don't eat eggs, meat, fish, and fowl.n Semi-Vegetarians: Eat a mostly plant-based diet. Sometimes they willeat meat, poultry, or fish.
Eating a vegetarian diet:n Choose unrefined whole grain products, like oats, whole-wheat bread, brown rice, and whole-grain cereals. Aim for 3 or more servings per day.n Use soybean products, beans, lentils, nuts, and seeds as protein sources.n If you don't eat dairy, look for calcium-fortified orange juice and calci-um-fortified soy-based dairy-like products.n Go easy on sweets and high-fat dressings.
There are many delicious Italian meals that are vegetarian. Getcreative and remember that cholesterol is found only in animal foods. It isrecommended that you eat less than 200 milligrams of cholesterol per day.
SALT SUBSTITUTES MAY BE UNHEALTHY FOR YOUR HEARTDid you know? Sea salt is not lower in sodium than iodized table salt; it issimply a coarser grind. Other salt substitutes are readily available in theform of herbs and seasonings. Kicking the salt habit is significantly easierwhen food is seasoned with garlic, onions, herbs, pepper, lemon juice, vine-gar or other flavoring agents. It takes a while to acclimate your taste budsto a reduced-salt diet, but the heart-protection benefits are worth it.
DASH DietThere is new, compelling evidence that the DietaryApproaches to Stop Hypertension (DASH) diet, which was created to help people control theirblood pressure, benefits healthy people too. It is adiet high in fruits, vegetables, whole grains, low-fat dairy products and plant proteins.

Heart attack, stroke and poor blood circulatoryproblems are still the number one cause of deathand disability in the U. S. With this concern inmind, we believe in the use of Early Detection &Prevention as a tool to combat this major healthconcern. We encourage a healthier lifestyle whichcan avoid or halt this major problem. First thingyou'll need is information about your body. LetVascular Diagnostic give you answers.
