This is UC San DiegoNestled on the blu s above the Paci c Ocean just north of San Diego, UC San Diego is known as one of the most attractive and liveable campuses in the country. Just over 25,000 students are spread across UC San Diego’s 1,200 wooded acres. With near-perfect weather year-round and boundless recreational activities to chose from, San Diego truly lives up to its motto of “America’s Finest City.”

UCSD is one of the top academic institutions in the World. U.S. News and World Report rated UC San Diego seventh in the nation among public universities. The London Times ranked UC San Diego among the top 25 universities in the World. UC San Diego also garnered recognition as the 2007 “Hottest School in Science”.

As well as competing as a member of the California Collegiate Athletic Association, widely considered the premier Division II conference in the country, UC San Diego competes against many of the top NCAA Division I programs in California.

UC San Diego’s Track and Field Complex is known as one of the top facilities in the country. The facility includes a nine-lane track surface in Triton Stadium, a world-renowned throwing facility, spacious locker rooms and a weight room. Large grass elds and a eucalyptus forest with trails surround the stadium providing endless possibilities for training. Near the track is a state-of-the-art, multi-million dollar RIMAC athletic event center that includes a 5,000 seat arena and a 12,000 square foot weight room.

Women’s Head Coach - Darcy Ahner Men’s Head Coach - Tony SalernoDarcy Ahner enters her first season as a head coach at the collegiate level, taking over one of the most successful programs at the Division II level in recent years. Her first year as head coach has already seen the Triton women continue their dramatic ascension to the top ranks of the division. An early season win over Division I sister schools UCSB, UCD, UCI and UCR in the All-UC Championships and a #1 US Track and Field Coaches Association Power Ranking bodes well for the season ahead.

As she assumes the helm of the UC San Diego women’s track & field team in 2008, she begins her first ever stint as a head coach after 17 previous years of coaching on the collegiate level, including the last eight on the La Jolla campus. She served as Associate Head Coach for both the men’s and women’s teams in each of the last two years and has been an assistant coach for both squads since 2000. Known as one of the nation’s most talented and versatile collegiate track and track and field coaches, Ahner’s successes have spanned all three NCAA Divisions.

Ahner joined the staff at UC San Diego in 2000 after nine years as an assistant coach at the NCAA Division I level. She spent seven years at her alma mater, the University of New Mexico, coaching the jumps and multi-events. While at the University of New Mexico, Ahner’s athletes dominated the high jump in the Western Athletic Conference, with four consecutive WAC championships by four different athletes. Seven athletes achieved individual WAC titles in seven years and four broke school records. During her time at New Mexico, seven athletes qualified for the NCAA Division I National Championships, producing one Division I All-American. During the two years that Ahner coached the jumps, hurdles and multi-events at Northern Arizona University, four of her athletes were NCAA Division I qualifiers, including an All-American in the Heptathlon. Five athletes achieved Big Sky Conference individual titles while at Northern Arizona with three of her athletes setting new NAU school records.

Ahner’s first 8 years at UC San Diego have seen her athletes rewrite the Triton record books in the jumps, hurdles and multi-events. Ahner’s athlete have won a remarkable 20 CCAA individual conference titles and earned All-American honors 10 times.

Ahner is a Level II USA Track and Field certified coach. She is also a NSCA Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist and serves as the strength and conditioning coach for the Triton track and field program.

As an athlete, Ahner competed in the heptathlon setting school records in the high jump, Javelin and heptathlon at New Mexico. She was honored as the Western Athletic Conference Most Valuable Athlete in 1989 and was the conference heptathlon champion in 1988 and 1989. Ahner was a three-time NCAA Division I Championships qualifier, as well as a World Championships trials competitor in 1990.

Tony Salerno begins his ninth season as the Head Men’s Track & Field Coach at UC San Diego in 2008 while also serving as an assistant coach for the women’s program in the throwing events. For 2008, Salerno will relinquish head coaching responsibilities for the women’s program to Darcy Ahner, who served as Associate Head Coach for both the men’s and women’s programs in 2007.

Salerno brings over 25 years of college coaching experience to UC San Diego. Since moving to the NCAA Division II level in 2001, both the men’s and women’s squads have been ranked among the top programs in the nation under his guidance. Tritons have earned a remarkable 48 All-American honors in his time as head coach at UC San Diego.

Since the beginning of Salerno’s tenure, the evolution of both the men’s and women’s teams at the Division II level have been nothing short of dramatic, with the men registering their highest CCAA Championship finish in the programs history with a 2nd place finish in 2006. The men’s program has consistently ranked among the top 25 programs in the nation in recent years in the US Track and Cross

Country Coaches Association National Power Rankings.

His final season as head coach of the women’s program in 2007 proved to be a banner year for the Triton women as they garnered their third straight CCAA Championship. The season was capped by an 8th place finish at NCAA Championships, the highest national championship placing since moving to the Division II level. The Triton women have been ranked either first or second in the US Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association National Power ranking every year since 2003.

The successes of the Triton track and field programs have not gone unnoticed by his coaching peers. He was voted CCAA women’s coach of the year in 2005, 2006 and 2007, as well West Region Coach of the year in 1993, 2005, 2006 and 2007. He was voted National Coach of the Year in 2005.

A specialist in coaching the throwing events, Salerno has produced 35 NCAA All-Americans as well as four individual NCAA Champions in the throwing events and the decathlon at UC San Diego. Over the span of his 29 years of coaching at the high school, community college, Division I, Division II and Division III levels of track and field, he has produced numerous record setters and champions including an Olympian in track and field and a World Champion in Olympic weightlifting.

Salerno began his tenure at UC San Diego in 1988 as an assistant coach before taking on the responsibilities of head coach in 1993 for both the men’s and women’s teams. From 1996 to 1999 Salerno coached on the Division I level at the US Air Force Academy in Colorado before returning to La Jolla in 2000 as part of UC San Diego’s move to the Division II level the following year. Salerno is a native of San Diego. He graduated from Mount Miguel High School then San Diego State University in 1984. In the off-season he pursues his passion of mountain biking in the hills and mountains of San Diego.

Assistant Coach - Nate GarciaNathan Garcia begins his second year coaching the distance events for the Triton track and eld program. Garcia also assumed Head Coaching responsibilities for both men’s and women’s cross country programs in the fall of 2007. He was elevated to the top spot within the program after the resignation of former head coach Ted Van Arsdale who directed both squads for 15 years prior to his retirement.

Garcia found immediate success in his rst season as head coach. His athletes earned All-America honors twice in track and eld in 2007. His rst year as head coach of the cross country program proved no less successful with both Triton cross country squads reaching NCAA Championships for the rst time since 2003. Seniors Emily McGregor and Diane Dunn earned All-America honors at the championships at Missouri Southern University.

A four-year athlete in both track and cross country while attending UCSD from 1996 to 2000, Garcia earned numerous athletic and academic honors, including being named Verizon All-Academic District VIII and CCAA Scholar-Athlete honors in 2000-01. He was also honored by UCSD on National Student-Athlete Day that same year Garcia earned his Bachelor of Arts degree in History from UCSD in 2000, graduating cum laude.

Mick Gieskes enters his 10th year at UCSD as an assistant coach for men’s and women’s track and eld in 2008. A long time member of the San Diego track and eld community, Gieskes’ athletes have rewritten the Triton record books in nearly every event in his tenure as sprint coach at UC San Diego.

The last several years have been particularly notable for the sprint crew with school records in both men’s relays in 2006 and school records in both women’s relays in 2007. The Triton women’s 4x400 relay shaved a remarkable four seconds of the school record in 2007 earning All-America honors with a time of 3:44.27 in the nal at NCAA Championships in Charlotte, North Carolina.Gieskes’ many coaching honors include his selection by his peers as the 1999 Division III West Region Coach of the Year in cross-country. In 1997, he coached the Triton women’s cross-country team to victory at the CCAA conference championships. This was the rst UCSD team in any sport to win a CCAA championship. Along with his team accomplishments, Gieskes has coached three individual quali ers to NCAA Division III National Cross Country Championships.
