Why Surrey place Centre? SurreyPlaceCentreexiststohelppeople.Wesupportparentswhoarestrugglingwiththeirchild’sdiagnosis,childrenwhoarehavingdifficultyconnectingwiththeworldaroundthemandadultswithdevelopmentaldisabilitieswhoareworkingtoachieveindependence.

Inthepastyear,we’vereceived1,196referralstoourDevelopmentalServicesProgramandofferedcomprehensiveprogramsandservicesto4,164uniqueclients.Ourcontributiontoadvancingthefieldofdevelopmentaldisabilitieshashelpedmanyofourclientsachievefull

participationandinclusion.

Withthehelpofourstaff,volunteers,donorsandpartners,we’vealsobuiltcapacitythrougheducationandresearchprogramsandaffectedchangethroughcommunityalliances.Allourefforts–bigandsmall–aregearedtowardshelpingpeopleachievetheirfullpotentialandmaximizetheirabilities.Theworkwedoismotivatedbythosewhoreachouttousforthesupportthatwillallowthemortheirlovedonestothrive.

Danielis3yearsoldandhasDownsyndrome.Sinceshortlyafterhisbirth,hehasbenefitedfromtheservicesatSurreyPlaceCentre.ADevelopmentalTherapistvisitedhimandhisfamilyweeklystartingwhenhewasonly4monthsold.Andsincethen,hehasseenanOccupationalTherapist,hearingspecialistandattendedaweeklymusicclass.At9months,Danielstartedsigningandwasreadingwordsbeforehewas2yearsold.

Today,Danielisasociableboywithagreatsenseofhumourwholovesbooksandplayingball.He’sgentlewithother

childrenandpetsandlovestogivehugsandkisses.ThesupporthereceivedatSurreyPlaceCentrehasallowedhimtolivetohishighestpotential–andnow,theskyishislimit!

Anthonyis15yearsoldandhascerebralpalsy,adevelopmentaldisabilitythatlefthismusclesweakerontherightside.Hisspeechisslowandlimited,andhecommunicateswithpicturecards.WhenAnthonywas13,hismotherSandraturnedtoSurreyPlaceCentreforhelpwithhisbehaviour.ABehaviouralTherapistfromtheCentrevisitedAnthonyathomeinanefforttounderstandwhyhebithisownhandinfrustrationandpushedandhitothers.ThetherapistgaveSandratangiblewaystoreducethisbehaviour.

Today,Anthonyisafun-lovingandactiveyoungman.Hehasstoppedhisaggressivebehaviourstowardsothersandthebitingofhishandhassignificantlydecreased.

peoplewithdevelopmentaldisabilities.Healsoworksatanemploymenttrainingcentre,isaLeaderinTrainingataParksandRecreationsummercampandspeakstoUniversityofTorontomedicalstudentswhovisitSurreyPlaceCentreforadayoflearningaboutdevelopmentaldisabilities.

Helping Families Connect Through TPASSurrey Place Centre helps children who have autism through several specialized programs, including the Toronto Partnership for Autism Services (TPAS). This program involves the highly structured learning method of Intensive Behavioural Intervention (IBI).

Djangois6½yearsoldandwasdiagnosedwithautismatSurreyPlaceCentrejustbeforehissecondbirthday.Monthslater,hewasbackattheCentreintheTorontoPartnershipforAutismServices(TPAS)program,whichheattendeddaily.AnewworldopeneduptoDjangothroughTPAS.Heachievedthingshisparentsneverthoughthewouldbeabletodo.HealsoreceivedspecializedhelpatSurreyPlaceCentrefromanOccupationalTherapistandaSpeech-LanguagePathologist.

Today,Djangoisahappyandactivechild.Heattendspublicschoolfivedaysaweekandisabletocommunicatewhathewants.Ifhewantstogoswimmingorishungry,hewillaskforit.Hisprogresshasbeencontinuoustothisday,andwillcontinuefortherestofhislife.

TylerwasdiagnosedwithautismatSurreyPlaceCentrewhenhewas18monthsold.HewasreferredtoTPASwherehereceivedIntensiveBehaviouralIntervention(IBI).He’salsohadanOccupationalTherapistfromSurreyPlaceCentrevisithimathome.WithIBI,Tylerbecamemoreverbal,andhisnutritionimprovedgreatly.WhenTylercompletedTPAS,aTransitionCoordinatorfromSurreyPlaceCentremadethetransitiontopublicschoolfairlyeasyforhim.

Today,Tylerisanactive9yearoldboywhoisalwaysonthemove.Heattendspublicschoolinamultipleexceptionality

classanddoessomuchonhisown.Hedresseshimself,islearningtoshowerhimself,surfstheinternetandhasstartedswimmingwithoutalifejacket.Whenhewantssomething,nothingwillgetinhisway.
