Red dot award: Design Concept

Why does a professional designer or even a design student want to win the award?

A designer may have a very good innovation or design idea and would like to realize the design commercially. Frequently, a designer may encounter resistance when presenting this idea to a company due to a lack of direct contacts with industryor the competition of other designers vying for the attention ofa company with new ideas. Winning a red dot differentiates the design to thousands of others, offering a convincing entry pointfor a discussion with companies. Every year, winners have reported success at attracting the attention of industry upon winning a red dot and a few have had their ideas manufactured and commercialized.

Medical Shower Head

design: Chen Qiong Lu Jie Xia Mang Zheng Guan

Medical Shower not only functions as a regular showerhead, it also helps take care of the skin. By accommodating traditional medicinal herbs, it facilitates a stream of infused water.

Traditional Chinese herbal medicine is widely known to have remarkable healing abilities. It is not only meant for consumption; it is also suitable for external applications. Age-old remedies, such as medicinal baths, have been extensively used throughout history. But this practice has been far less common in recent times as traditional baths can be inconvenient in the modern day context. However, it is possible to obtain Chinese herbal medicine in concentrated granules these days. They are individually packed in small parcels, similar to teabags. As such, taking a medicinal shower can be as easy as making a cup of tea.

Nature

design: Feng Ning Li Xinping He Chengfei Shi Hui

Nature is an interactive bathroom system that is designed to simulate the primordial relationship between human and nature.

Nature is dedicated to the revival of a basic human need – to be part of nature. Through design and modern technology, Nature seeks toprovide the modern man with a compensatory experience of things in and as part of the natural environment. Designed as an interactive bathroom system – which is an adaptation of the standing urinal –Nature gives the gentleman the impression that he is watering a small plant when he uses the facility. When it is in use, a built-in sensor in the urinal detects the flow of liquid, which then displays an image of a growing plant in front of the user. The size of the plant is dependent on the length of time the urinal is in use. The image of the plant fades when the user leaves the urinal. This visual simulation provides an emotional connection between human and nature.

It Depends On You

design: Chao Shih Hsin

Why must the toilet brush convey an image of dirtiness? It Depends On You is a sculptural toilet brush and brush holder designed to lift the mood of the user.

It Depends On You is a toilet brush and brush holder that combine to form a complete structure. A curve has been used in the design to hint at the function of the toilet brush, at the same time giving formal expression. The form is based on the image of a broom, complete with lines expressed on the surface.

The base of the water container has been designed as a heavy cylinder resting above a square surface, which relates to Chinese symbolism – “sky is round and earth is square”. At the same time, the configuration suggests that the brush be placed downwards. The play on soft curvilinearity makes a point of difference from other regular, stiff toilet brushes. It Depends On You offers the user a more pleasant experience and brings elegance to cleaning.

Save Water

design: Yang Taegyun

It’s easy to lose track of time when you’re taking a shower. Save Water is a showerhead that helps the user save water by indicating how much has been used.

Designed to help the user save water, Save Water is comprised of a hand-held showerhead and a wall-mounted unit, and includes a sensor and a digital display. The digital display shows the amount of water used as well as other information such as the temperature and pressure of the water and whether the water is turned off. The sensor detects when the showerhead is in use. Save Water is automatically turned on when the showerhead is lifted off the wall-mounted device, and is turned off when the showerhead is returned to the wall-mounted device. The user is able to control the water pressure and temperature and the angle of the sprays by adjusting the device.

Pebbles

design: Kwak Yongju Shin Dongbin Han Kukil Kim Young Seok

Derived from the traditional Korean stone grill, Pebbles is a new concept grill that provides a safer and healthier system for the preparation of food.

Pebbles is a stone grill that has been designed with a flexible body structure and heating panels to allow the user to prepare food safely and more effectively than with traditional devices. Being able to adapt to different situational and cooking requirements, Pebbles is convenient to use. With its flexible body and portability, it is well suited to both outdoor and indoor use, and is adaptable to the cooking of different foods. It is hygienic and does not produce harmful by-products, which makes it a safer and healthier option for cooking. The user is able to grill a fish fresh out of the water, cook meat at a park for a party, or use it as a burner on the table for a warm family dinner.

Pebbles’ simple structure makes it easy to operate: the user must first shift a centrally located controller pebble, which conceals the switch, to turn the power button on. With their finger, the user rotates the sensor touch pad, located on the outer ring of the power button, to activate the heating function. A red dot formed around the pebbles notifies the user that heat is being generated. When cooking is complete, the user has to simply tug gently at the controller pebble and it will sling back into position, which turns the device off. In addition, washing is simple and easy given the product’s form and the material characteristics of the stones used.

Deodr- Clothes Refreshner

Designer: Chang Kuo-Jen and Wu Kun-Chia

Offering a convenient way to freshen up clothes without washing them, Deodr combines the effects of a photocatalyst light tube and fan-induced convection to remove unpleasant smells.

Deodr removes unpleasant smells from clothes and makes them smell fresh. The photocatalyst light tube in combination with air convection makes efficient deoderisation possible. Avoiding the use of water and laundry liquid has benefits for the environment as well as the clothes. This freshening process is much more gentle on fabrics than washing.

Using Deodr is easy. Just hang the clothes within the “lampshade” and set the controller to deodorise for about 15 to 30 minutes. Any unpleasant smells, such as perfume residue, will be removed quickly. Deodr would be very useful for business travelers. While Deodr will remove smells, washing is still required for stain removal.

B-IRON 725

design: Lee Dongseok Jung Jihyung

Taking the guess-work out of de-creasing your garments, the B-IRON 725 is a transparent iron that allows the user to watch the ironing proces.

The ironing process can be uneasy at times, as there is no direct visual contact with the part of the clothing that’s being ironed. There is no way to tell if the clothing is being properly smoothed. The soleplate of the B-IRON 725 is made of tempered glass, so the user is able to watch the ironing process. Whilst conducting heat adequately, tempered glass has a better degree of heat resistance than ordinary glass, meaning it can cope well with high temperatures. The electro-thermal wire, which is made of Nichrome (a nickel-chromium resistance wire), is laid out in a geometric pattern to suit the design concept of the product. If additional pressure needs to be applied during ironing, the user is able to rotate the handle to the opposite direction for better support.

Fresh Storage

design: Lee Dongseok

Fresh Storage is a fruit storage system that uses photocatalysistechnology to keep fruits fresh.

When one piece of fruit goes bad, it accelerates the deterioration process of others. The reason for this is that ethylene gas is emitted from the bad fruit, which affects the other fruit around it. Fresh Storage works by removing the ethylene created in the process of deterioration by photocatalysis. This technique is powerful, effective, and environmentally friendly. Since ethylene is disintegrated by its reaction to photocatalysts in the storage system, the freshness of fruits or grains can be preserved for an extended period of time.

Viron

design: Kim Jaejin

Have you ever scorched your clothes while ironing? With its centre of gravity located at the rear, Viron lifts away from the garment when you let go.

It is easy to scorch your clothes during ironing. Sometimes all it takes is a phone call or a knock at the door. Viron is an iron that has been designed to help prevent this from occurring. Its centre of gravity is located at the rear, rather than the centre of the iron, so when you lift it off your garment, it leans backwards to remove the hot iron plate from the fabric.

Baguni

design: Jung Jihyung

Baguni is a washing machine that incorporates a removable laundry basket-cum-washing drum. Who does not want to make domestic tasks a little easier?

Most average households use a laundry basket to collect their laundry. When the laundry basket is full, its contents are emptied into the washing machine. The Baguni washing machine provides a simple and easy way to launder by eliminating a step from the usual process. The entire Baguni laundry basket is placed into the washing machine, serving a secondary function as the washing machine drum. After the washing cycle is complete, the clean laundry can be removed from the machine while still in the drum/basket.

Cognitive Plug

design: Lee Sang-Hun Lim Yong-Bum

Cognitive Plug allows the user to easily recognise which appliance a plug belongs to at a multi-outlet socket, and hence, to turn off its power supply completely. Avoiding stand-by mode saves a significant amount of electricity.

Can you identify which plug is for the TV, amongst the other plugs in your power sockets? Do you leave your appliances on stand-by? A significant amount of electricity is wasted by appliances in stand-by mode, even though the appliance is switched off. In Korea, it has been suggested that the amount of wasted electricity is roughly equivalent to the amount of electricity used in two nuclear reactors in a year. Money and electricity are wasted because people do not know about the implications of stand-by power consumption.

Cognitive Plug is an LED-lit tag that is designed to solve this problem. Each Cognitive Plug shows an LED-lit icon, which allows the user to easily identify the appliance to which the plug belongs, and hence, to turn off its electrical power completely. The Cognitive Plug uses only a small amount of electric power to light the icon, and prevents the user from pulling out the wrong plug. This easy and accurate system of identification helps to save electrical energy.

BIG EYE NEEDLE

design: Woo Moonhyung

Threading a needle is generally difficult, but it would be even trickier if you suffer from poor eyesight or shaky hands. The BIG EYE NEEDLEcan be threaded easily with a temporary enlargement of the eye.

“The eye of a needle” is a saying often used in relation to very small holes. As threading can be frustrating when it comes to needlework, people often wish that needles’ eyes could be bigger. However, bigger eyes would not be practical, as they would leave unsightly holes in the fabric. BIG EYE NEEDLE has been conceptualised to solve this prevailing issue. It can accommodate a bigger eye, while maintaining the overall size of the needle. The eye of the needle has been designed with a slit to allow the user to enlarge it by pressing against the end with the fingertips. The needle snaps back into its original form after the pressure is released. The material used to make the needle –iron – creates a spring-like elasticity when the eye is enlarged while simultaneously making it possible for the needle to retain its rigidity. BIG EYE NEEDLE makes it possible for anyone, especially the elderly, to thread a needle easily.

Soap Bank

design: Lim Woo Teik Cho Yun Ha Park Sung Woo Paick Yoon Ha

Soap Bank allows small pieces of soap to be saved so that the entire bar can be finished.

As a bar of soap is used and becomes smaller, it also gets harder to manipulate. It might also break into smaller pieces. Soap Bank has been designed to save these small pieces of soap – much like a savings bank. They are deposited through a small hole and collected in a net attached to the main body of Soap Bank, which is made of rubber. The user can conveniently remove the magnetically-attached net with the soap in it and use it to make the perfect lather. A suction pad allows the Soap Bank to be attached to the wall of a bathroom.

Universal Plug

design: Kim Seung Woo

With its circular cut-out, the Universal Plug allows everyone to pull out plugs easily, regardless of the strength of their hands. It may also encourage people to develop a good attitude towards conserving energy.

The Universal Plug’s circular cut-out has two great benefits. Firstly, it makes pulling the plug out of a socket a lot easier. This is particularly useful for people who lack strength in their hands, whether through injury, illness or aging. The user simply needs to hook their finger into the cut-out and pull. The plug can be pulled out with a minimum of effort.

Secondly, it may encourage people to develop a good attitude towards saving energy. Pulling out the plug will cut off the supply of electricity for appliances’ stand-by modes when they are not being used. While most people want to save energy by turning off lights, they still leave plugs in their sockets, not giving a second thought to the powerwastage of standby mode. The Universal Plug has a built- in reminder, after the light is switched off and the room gets dark, the cut-out hole becomes more prominent thanks to a glowing inner surface.

design: Bae Yong Sun

Making life a little easier in the kitchen, Oh Crab is a pot whose handles become crab-like legs. Chefs need never be caught without a pot stand again.

There are some things that always seem difficult to find when you need them. A pot stand is one of them. Most people don’t think to look for their pot stand before they cook, later finding themselves with a hot pot in their hands and nowhere to place it. They’ll invariably use something easy to find, like a book, as their pot stand – a situation that is far from ideal. Oh Crab is a pot that takes its design inspiration from the crab. It incorporates handles that also function as a pot stand, and it has a knob on its lid that also functions as a kitchen timer. The knob resembles an hourglass. Oh Crab aims to make cooking and servingmore enjoyable and convenient.

Fan Bricks

design: Dai Ziyi

Bringing fun and flexibility to the fan, as well as a way to decorate the room, Fan Bricks are a new take on domestic cooling.

The fan is a more energy-efficient means of cooling than the air conditioner. There is not a lot of variety in the shape of most fans, however. Fan Bricks have been designed to bring some fun into the equation. They can be stacked and assembled according to the user’s preferences, much like toy blocks. Safety has been considered, with “soft-safe-fan-leaves”being used for the blades. These will not injure the hand if it comes into contact with the rotating fan blades due to an “auto-terminate- safe-motor”, which switches the rotation direction if the blades are touched. A result of this safety feature is that the breeze strength is less than that of ordinary fans. The use of a series of Fan Bricks can compensate for this.

One set of assembled bricks needs only one power cord. Three bricks, one stand, and some fittings compose one set of Fan Bricks. Larger arrangements can be made by adding more sets. Every socket has its own cover and every cover has its own place to rest on the stand. If there are children in the house, a mask can be applied to the Fan Bricks to prevent the perception that all fans are as safe as this one. The dimensions of the parts have been optimized for packing and shipping.

Led By One Line: Headphones

design: Bao Haimo Feng Dong Li Xiao Ming Liu Sining Liu Jie

With a fresh conception of the plug and jack relationship, Led By One Line: Headphones make it possible for friends to share music played on a personal music player.

Music is an important component of many people’s lives. However, it may be difficult to share music with others via personal music players in public. This is mainly due to the availability of standard headsets that do not allow for more than one person to hear the music at one time.

The design of Led By One Line: Headphones stems from the relationship between the headset’s plug and jack. The jack is designed with an extension to enable a second headset to be attached to it.

This device not only provides users with the freedom to use personal music players in more ways; it also promotes communication, sharing and convenience.

The Birth of Natural Radio

design: Jo Cheol Ki

Through the use of familiar natural objects and a building action that humans have performed for millennia, we are presented with The Birth of Natural Radio.

Many people find a degree of comfort and familiarity in nature, and products are often given “natural” shapes – made in the “image” of nature. Humans are, after all, part of nature. The Birth of Natural Radio makes use of natural stones in combination with an action that humans have performed for millenia – building with stones.

To use this radio, pick up a stone and place it on the channel pad. The channel changes with the changing number of stones. Similary, the volume is increased by increasing the number of stones placed on the volume pad. Electronic scales measure the weight of the stones and signal to the radio component, which responds accordingly.

The design of each speaker relates to the overall form the Cube. The speaker at the bottom is the woofer and volume controller, which is manipulated by twisting the pyramid.

Shake

design: Kenneth Tay

Shake is an MP3 player that uses kinetic energy to charge the battery. When the battery runs out, it is recharged with a shake.

The design intention of Shake was to relate technology to something we are familiar with – in this case, a pocket watch. The operation of a pocket watch relies on the physical winding action of the wearer. The Shake MP3 player is operated by a shaking motion. It is charged by shaking with the “hold” function turned on. With “hold” off, the user shakes the player to play and pause.

The design language and formal expression of Shake are based on the established typology of the pocket watch, which gives the user comfort in the familiarity of a personal device carried in the pocket. Also familiar is the experience of giving life to an electronic device through the application of a physical action.

With the growing concern over environmental issues, Shake serves as a concept for what MP3 players could be like, and provides a possible solution for MP3 players of the future.

TRIA Wireless Sound System

design: Ricardo Baiao

TRIA is a wireless sound system that allows the user to listen to music from vinyl records and rip it to a built-in hard disk.

Composed of three elements – a wireless vinyl player and ripper, wireless stereo speakers and a wireless controller – TRIA Wireless Sound System allows the user to play and convert music from vinyl records to MP3 format. Music can also be transferred from the player’s built-in hard disk onto a USB storage device.

TRIA not only plays vinyl records on a new system with innovative digital solutions, it also preserves the old turntable experience by enabling it to be controlled with a remote control or a touch-screen LCD display located on the top surface of the player. A system of four styli allows it to play the both sides of the vinyl without having to flip it. In addition, TRIA is equipped with an internal cleaning system, which offers the system long life and durability.

Biopod

design: Morteza Faghihi

Inspired by the praying mantis and bionic science, the Biopod is a photographer's tripod with an extraordinarily flexible body. This allows it to be used easily on the uneven surfaces of natural terrains.

At times, photographers need a tripod whose angles can be adjusted, particularly when they are working on uneven surfaces, such as those in natural environments. For such conditions, it is almost impossible to use the ordinary tripod effectively. Inspired by bionic science as well as the legs of a praying mantis.

Biopod has been developed to adapt to different environmental conditions and provide ease of use for the photographer. It is quick to set up and can be easily adjusted to accommodate special angles as well as suit the most challenging terrains.

Biopod's telescopic movement, which utilises a four-links mechanism, is a refinement of existing models. Biopod can be adjusted to its terrain through disengaging the lock and rotating each leg, which can be re-locked at a later stage.

Point of Time

design: Tao Di

Using moving cross bars rather than rotating arms, the Point of Time watch presents a new way of telling the time.

Instead of using rotating arms, the Point of Time watch shows the time in an unexpected, mysterious manner. The red hour bar moves downwards and the blue minutes bar moves across, from left to right. The two bars meets at a cross point, which represents a unique moment in the day. As time passes, the point moves on. The bars are driven by an internal mechanism; when they reach the end of their track, they will immediately return to the start point. A magnetic clip and flexible straps make this watch easy and comfortable to wear.
