Last Meeting:What Happened last time….February 24th, 2009 Section Meeting

The Jagerhaus restaurant, conveniently located in the greater Anaheim area and the home of truly authentic German cuisine acted asthe stage for yet another fantastic AWS LA/IE monthly meeting. Attendees were subjected to wave after wave of colorful and trulymouth watering entrees expertly prepared and no one went home hungry. The LA/IE Section would like to send a special thanks to

Mrs Sandra Schwaiger, who is the proprietor of this diamond in the rough restaurant, and assure her that the experience she has graciously provided has defi-nitely assured re-peat customers.

At the conclusion of the dinner festivities our night of welding education began. It was kicked off by the introduction of distinguished guests by our hon-orable Chairman, George Rolla who made great efforts to put this meeting together.

Our first speaker was our very own District 21 director, Mrs. Nan Samanich. Nan brings to the table a fresh new energy, backed by experience and deter-mination and an overall love of everything that is welding. She stressed the fact that she is an ACTIVE director, and that anyone in our section can come toher with questions or issues that they might have and that we as a community need to not loose site of the fact that we are here to promote the education ofwelding. She applauded our student chapter and stated that it is great to see " New Blood" joining the mix. She also pointed out that the welding industry isprimarily a male dominated field, but she is living proof that woman can achieve just as much as any man.

Nan passed the floor to the 2008 AWS President, and our current Section Treasurer, Mr. Gene Lawson. Gene covered a few highlights and memories hehad the pleasure to experience while he was acting AWS President, in 2008. To include visits to Europe, China and India in the ongoing effort to exposenewly found friends abroad to AWS and promote the benefits of welding education to areas of the world who have discovered a new found hunger for the artof welding.

Gene had the pleasure of introducing our final guest speaker of the evening: Mr. Victor Matthews. He is a Life member of AWS and currently works forLincoln Electric as a Global customer service specialist. He holds patents as an inventor in 8 countries and holds several other qualifications that include beingvice chair of commission XIV of the I.I.W and he is our acting 2009 AWS President. Vic took us through his upbringing in the world of welding, from hum-ble beginnings as a shop worker all the way up to becoming the AWS 2009 President. He pointed out that no matter what you do in life or where you go,welding is everywhere, from the simple soldering that is in our cell phones to the cars we drive, to aircraft carriers, from farm equipment to the space station.Even the clothes and shoes we wear every day were assembled by machines that would not exist if we didn't have welders. He added that 55 is the average ageof today's welder, and that the 20,000 elders set to retire by 2010 are only going to be replaced by 5,000 or so who are currently in school learning this essentialskill. No matter what the economics forecast might be, one constant remains " Welders hold the world together." He stressed the importance of educationand certification, but most of all of recruitment. Welding students are the future of the industry, and being in the industry I'm here to say the world could al-ways use a few more good welders. Our meeting concluded, as it always does with an exciting 50/50 raffle. A special thank you to Lincoln Electric, who do-nated a snazzy new welding hood, which stood as the crown piece among numerous other prizes, including a $65 cash award.

Thanks to all in attendance, all students, sponsors and professional partners. We look forward to our next installment on Wednesday March 25th at JVIndustrial! Greg Tarin....Publicity Chairman
