Recreation Building or, as it is more commonly known, Rec Hall is the home of PennState men's gymnastics. Located in the heart of the picturesque University Park cam-pus, the historic structure also hosts events for Nittany Lion men’s and women’svolleyball, women’s gymnastics, and wrestling.

When the construction of Rec Hall was completed in 1928, it was consideredone of the premiere field houses in the nation. Originally budgeted at $450,000, thefinal cost of the building amounted to $572,260. e architect, Charles Z. Klauder, also designed the University of Pennsylvania's Palestra, which was constructed in1927. e Colonial Georgian design was thought to "harmonize" with other newstructures on campus. e excavating work required the removal of 12,500 cubicyards of earth and 400 cubic yards of rock, most of which had to be dynamited. estructural work consisted of raising 800 tons of steel in the form of assembled trusses.

e first addition to Rec Hall was completed in 1953 at a cost of $1,021,310.A 100-foot expansion of the arena was part of the 1963-64 renovation and increasedseating capacity from 5,000 to 7,200. Scoreboards, especially designed for Rec Halland adaptable to several sports, also were installed. Recent adjustments in seatinghave reduced the capacity to 6,846.

In 2007, head coach Randy Jepson’s Nittany Lions captured the program’sNCAA-record 12th national championship at Rec Hall in thrilling fashion, comingfrom behind to edge two-time defending title-winner Oklahoma. Penn State previ-ously hosted the National Collegiate Championships in 1960, 1966, 1974 and 1983,and 1991, winning its sixth national title on its home floor in 1960. Penn State alsowon the 1995 NCAA East Regional in Rec Hall, defeating Big Ten powers Iowa andOhio State.

Penn State won its second Big Ten Championship in program history in 2008at Rec Hall with Big Ten Gymnast of the Year and conference all-around title-win-ner Casey Sandy leading the way. Penn State also served as hosts of the conferencemeet in 1994 and 2001.

Penn State men’s gymnastics has led the nation in meet attendance for over 50years, while many of the Nittany Lion fans have been season ticket holders for morethan 25 years.

Under the direction of Randy Jepson, the 2000, 2004, and 2007 NationalCoach of the Year, the Penn State men’s gymnastics program has carried onthe proud tradition of excellence and achievement established by its fore-bearers. After guiding his teams to three national championships and two BigTen titles, Jepson serves as a symbol of Penn State’s vaunted gymnastics her-itage.

A member of the coaching staff since 1983, Jepson was appointed headcoach on July 6, 1992, succeeding long-time head coach Karl Schier. Dur-ing the 24 years Jepson has coached at his alma mater, Penn Statestudent-athletes have earned All-America honors 89 times. He has alsocoached 17 individual national champions during his tenure, including MarkSohn, the first gymnast to win four-consecutive pommel horse nationalchampionships.

Jepson also championed the renovation efforts of the White Building, transforming the facility into the top collegiate training site in the country.

JEPSON’S BACKGROUNDBefore his appointment as acting head coach, Jepson spent six seasons

as an assistant to former head coach Karl Schier, who retired on October 1,1991.

Jepson is the sixth head coach in the 72-year history of the Penn Statemen’s gymnastics program and only the third in the last 64 years. Gene Wett-stone coached from 1939-76 and was succeeded by Schier, one of his formerathletes who served from 1977-91.

Jepson earned the prestigious honor on April of 1991, the year he wasnamed Assistant Coach of the Year by the National Association of CollegiateGymnastics Coaches for his outstanding work.

Seven months prior to that, he coached Mike Masucci to a gold medalin the all-around as head coach of the U.S. team that participated in theCup of Puerto Rico international meet in San Juan. Masucci also capturedgold medals in four events.

A native of Portland, Ore., Jepson lettered for three years at the Uni-versity of Oregon and was an NCAA finalist on the rings his sophomoreyear. He transferred to Penn State in 1982, when the Ducks dropped theirgymnastics program. In his one season as a Nittany Lion, Jepson was captainand won All-America honors on rings.

A Nissen-Award nominee as a senior, Jepson posted a perfect score of10.0 on rings in a meet against a team from the Soviet Union in 1983 atRec Hall.

Jepson joined the Lions’ coaching staff as a graduate assistant in 1983and worked in that capacity for two seasons. His first season as an assistantcoach was 1985-86.

Jepson has been instrumental in guiding Penn State gymnastics toberths on the U.S. Senior National and Developmental squads, and in addi-tion was a member of the 1997 and 2005 USA World Championshipscoaching staff.

A member of the National Association of Collegiate Gymnastics

Coaches, Jepson served as secretary and treasurer of the United States EliteCoaches Association.

In years past, Jepson has served men’s program director at WoodwardGymnastics Camp in Woodward, Pa. In addition, Jepson directed the Northteam that won the gold medal at the 1993 United States Olympic Festival.

Jepson has also been heavily involved in national team training camps, helping to prepare teams for the 1999 World Championships in China andthe 2000 Olympic Games in Sydney, Australia. He was also selected as assis-tant coach for the 1999 Pan American Games team in Winnipeg, Canada. In 2006, Jepson served as an assistant coach for Team USA at the WorldChampionships and in a meet versus France and Switzerland. In February of2008, Jepson served as head coach of a six-man U.S. team in a dual meet ver-sus Canada, leading the Americans to victory. Later that year, countless hoursspent overseeing the training of world class gymnast and Penn State assistantcoach Kevin Tan paid off for Jepson, as Tan realized a lifelong dream by earn-ing a spot on the U.S. Olympic Team. Jepson served as Tan’s personal coach, accompanying him to Beijing, China for the 2008 Summer Games, wherehe captured a bronze medal in the team competition.

ASSISTANT COACH KEVIN TAN

Former six-time Penn State All-American Kevin Tan is entering his fifth sea-son as a full-time assistant coach under Randy Jepson.

After establishing himself as one of the top collegiate gymnasts duringhis Nittany Lion career, Tan achieved that lofty status on the internationalgymnastics stage in 2008. A lifetime of hard work and preparation culmi-nated in the realization of a lifelong dream when Tan was named to the 2008U.S. Olympic Team following a first-place showing in the still rings at theOlympic Trials in Philadelphia. He was further honored when he wasselected, by a vote of his teammates, to represent the team as its lone captain. With the world’s gaze focused on Beijing, China, Tan’s dream became sweeterwhen he helped the U.S. capture a bronze medal in the team finals of the2008 Summer Olympic Games.

Tan’s Olympic achievements were just the pinnacle of his competitivesuccess in 2008. In May, Tan won his third straight rings title at the VISAChampionships.

A month prior, he won a silver medal in the still rings at the 32ndTurnier der Meister Cottbus, Germany, an event that featured a collectionof the world's elite competitors from 40 countries. His standout showing atthe Turnier der Meister came on the heels of two impressive performancesearlier in the year. In February, Tan captured his third consecutive and fourthoverall rings championship at the Winter Cup Challenge. Later that month,he led a select group of gymnasts from the U.S. Men's Senior National Teamto a 361.350-352.600 dual meet victory over Canada in Calgary. With per-haps his best performance in his distinguished international career, Tan wonthe pommel horse (14.900), the still rings (16.300), and the parallel bars(15.500).

After returning from Beijing and the Olympics, Tan’s star continued to risewhen he signed on to perform with the 2008 Tour of Gymnastics Super-stars. Along with a select group of the nation’s most celebrated gymnasts,Tan embarked on a three-month long, 37-city whirlwind tour of the UnitedStates, displaying his gymnastics skills in the live extraordinary sports andmusic extravaganza.

A member of Penn State's 2004 NCAA championship team, Tan wasthe Nittany Lions' first back-to-back NCAA champion on the still rings, earning titles in 2003 and 2004. He also earned All-American honors onthe parallel bars (2002) and high bar (2003) during his standout collegecareer.

During his senior year in 2004, Tan was one of the premier collegiategymnasts in the nation, becoming a finalist for the Nissen-Emery Award. He was an all-conference honoree, winning both the still rings and parallelbars crowns at the 2004 Big Ten Championships. His still rings title was histhird-consecutive conference championship in the event

“Kevin has had an incredible run the last couple ofyears as a competitor and that makes him a bettercoach. He is able to see things from both sides. Havingone of the world’s elite competitors in our gym everyday is a tremendous benefit. He brings a lot of wisdom, competitive experience, and thought process into hiscoaching and that, in turn, has helped become a bet-ter gymnast. It’s a win-win both ways.”

2010 SEASON OUTLOOK

PENN STATE 2009-2010 MEN’S GYMNASTICS14

For the Penn State men’s gymnastics team, youthwill be a prominent theme for the 2010 season.Just five Nittany Lions have two or more years ofcompetitive experience at the NCAA level and thefreshman class makes up nearly 50 percent of theroster.

“We are very young, so there is a lot of teach-ing that will have to go on this year and educatingon how we train and bring people along, what’sexpected of them, and how they will be requiredto step up and carry the banner for the next fouryears. But the guys are hungry and working hard,”said Penn State head coach Randy Jepson, who isentering his 19th year at the helm of one of thenation’s traditional powerhouse programs.

Providing leadership for the preseason No. 6-ranked Nittany Lions will be five experienced andskilled upperclassmen – seniors Allen Harris, theteam captain for 2010, Matt Greenfield, NoamShaham, and Nick Virbitsky and junior WarrenYang. All have been a part of championship teamsand have had their individual triumphs.

“We will have a nice mix of veterans andyouth, so it’s been fun to coach,” continued Jep-son. “I think, across the board, we are solid onevents but not overpowering. We will very good ina couple of events, but we have some weaknessestoo. Health will play a role, but we have moredepth than last year, which will be helpful. Oursuccess will be contingent upon consistency andnot beating ourselves. We will need to be ‘on’ inorder to be a threat.”

FLOOR EXERCISEFloor exercise will serve as the foundation of anysuccess in 2010, as the Nittany Lions’ quality andquantity of talent and depth will allow them toget off to fast starts in dual meet competitions.

“Floor exercise will be a great event for us,”said Jepson. “We will get terrific routines fromNoam Shaham and Nick Virbitsky and we arehoping to get Allen Harris back in as soon as pos-sible.”

Shaham is consistently strong while Virbitsky,an All-American in the event as a freshman, andHarris shared Penn State’s high score in the floorin 2009, a 15.450. Harris, however, is recoveringfrom a biceps tear suffered this summer duringtraining and may not be able to compete at theonset of the season.

Senior Matt Greenfield and freshmen NickGrant and Parker Raque are also expected to pro-vide regular contributions.

POMMEL HORSEPommel horse was Penn State’s nemesis last year, essentially preventing it from advancing to theteam finals of the national collegiate champi-onships for the first time since 2002.

“Pommel horse is an event that we have seenimprovement on, but we still need to build con-sistency,” said Jepson. “We need to get a solid baselevel. Confidence will be a big key in order for usto stay in the hunt. We have been doing a lot ofroutines early to develop that type of confidence.I think we have a good core group that can stepup, but we still have to concentrate and focus.”

Miguel Pineda, Matt Albrecht, and LoganWyman, who were regulars in the pommel horseline-up last year, will lend experience while fresh-men Felix Aronovich, Nick Grant, Tony Beck, and Mackenzie Dow will aim to turn potentialinto production quickly and become factors.

STILL RINGSe still rings has been Penn State’s signatureevent this decade with five Big Ten titles, threenational championships, and 12 All-Americahonors to its credit. However, graduation andinjury over the past few years has diminished itsdecided advantage over opponents. Nevertheless, the rings should be one the Nittany Lions’ betterevents in 2010.

“We are not super overpowering in terms ofphysical strength, but we have solid rings per-formers,” said Jepson.

Sophomore Miguel Pineda, who compiledfive first place finishes in the rings a year ago inhis freshman campaign, will anchor the line-up.Redshirt sophomore Colin Hill has made enoughgains in terms of physical strength and fine tuninghis presentation to be considered by Jepson as oneof PSU’s top rings competitors. Senior Noam Sha-ham has been a valuable contributor throughouthis career but lingering shoulder problems haveslowed his progress. It is hoped he will be in fullform by midseason.

Scott Rosenthal, who Jepson describes as “oneof the strongest freshman we have ever had atPenn State,” has shown a great deal of promise intraining for the season and should fit it nicely. Fel-low freshman Parker Raque could also make animpact.

VAULTIn recent years, the vault has been one of PennState’s cornerstones for regular season and post-season success. But Jepson cautions that what theNittany Lions have done in the past may not beadequate to reach the elite level from this yeargoing forward.

“It’s not good enough to have a 16.200 startvalue any more when some in the NCAA have16.600s to 17.000s. We need to make that nextjump. We can be competitive with a 16.200 vaultbut in order to make headway, you must be inthat range. We will continue to work towards rais-ing start values on vault.”

Veterans Noam Shaham, Nick Virbitsky,Allen Harris, and Matt Albrecht will spearheadPenn State’s efforts in the vault. Harris andAlbrecht each won dual meet vault titles last sea-son while Shaham and Virbitsky had vaults thatranked first and second, respectively, on the teamin 2009. Add freshmen Mackenzie Dow andFrancisco Vazquez to that strong core and thevault could once again afford Penn State anadvantage over opponents.

Team captain Allen Harris is one of Penn State’s top floorexercise performers.

Sophomore Miguel Pineda will help anchor the Penn State line-up on the pommel horse.

PARALLEL BARS“If we have a weakest event this season, it will beparallel bars,” Jepson said. “We had graduationlosses and we weren’t strong on it last year. It’s anevent that takes time to develop and those skillsdon’t come easy, but we are focusing on it in prac-tice.”

Senior Noam Shaham has learned some newelements that will prove helpful, redshirt sopho-more Logan Wyman has made strides with animproved routine, and junior Warren Yang, if herebounds quickly enough from his shoulderinjury, will be key to Penn State’s fortunes. Inaddition, newcomer Felix Aronovich, an experi-enced international competitor, will contributeimmediately and freshman Tony Beck andMackenzie Dow should fit in and give Jepson’sline-up a boost.

“We have to not beat ourselves on the paral-lel bars. We must be clean, solid, and confident.”

HIGH BAR“High bar will be a top event for us in 2010. Inthe past, it has been inconsistent, but we havereally good routines and experienced performersdoing those routines. We have a good deal ofdepth and quality. From there, it is a question ofbeing able to pull through when we need to. It’san event in which we could make some headway,”said Jepson.

Senior Noam Shaham performs a world classroutine and has won three regular season titles inthe event as a Nittany Lion. His career high scoreof 15.050 ranked second on the team in 2009.

Nick Virbitsky, another senior, has solidified a

spot in the PSU line-up by increasing the diffi-culty of his routine and classmate MattGreenfield, who had three top three finishes in thehigh bar a year ago, will be a major contributorin 2010.

Matt Albrecht, who is entering his second sea-son at Penn State, and newcomers Parker Raque,Felix Aronovich, Matthew Chelberg, andMackenzie Dow will also figure prominently inthe line-up rotation.

ALL-AROUNDGone to graduation is Casey Sandy, the NCAAAll-Around champion in 2008 and one the mostaccomplished all-arounders in Penn State history, but a group of returnees will be counted on tostep up and fill the void.

Foremost on that list is Noam Shaham, whocompeted in the all-around in six meets last sea-son. His top finish was a second place showing ina win over Michigan and he ended the 2009 sea-son ranked No. 11 in the nation in the all-around.

“Noam’s pommel horse lags, but he has strongfive events and, if he can hang on in that sixth, hewill be fine,” said Jepson. “Felix Aronovich is avery accomplished all-arounder. Miguel Pinedawill have a tough time making all of the events, but he is solid and provides a lot of depth. MattAlbrecht has upped his game physically and ismore prepared than he was last year. He nowknows what it takes to compete at this level.”

SCHEDULEe 2010 schedule is marked by competitionswith some of collegiate gymnastics top teams, for-tifying the young Nittany Lion squad as it lays thegroundwork for their climb back to the pinnacleof the sport.

“e schedule is challenging because we areso young,” said Jepson. “All of the Big Ten teamswill be formidable and there are good tests from

the beginning to the end of the season. But thesechallenges but will prepare us not only for the endrun of this year as we head into the postseason atthe Big Ten and NCAA Championships but alsofor the future.”

Penn State begins the season in traditionalfashion, facing Army for the seventh consecutiveyear in its opener. e Nittany Lions will meet theBlack Knights on Jan. 9 in Rec Hall in the first offive home meets. Penn State will also welcomeWilliam & Mary (Jan. 31), Big Ten rival Illinois(Feb. 28), and perennial power Oklahoma (March20) to Rec Hall in 2009 and will also host Min-nesota and Temple (Jan. 31) in its lone hometri-meet of the year. Revenge will serve as motiva-tion for the Lions when they clash with Illinois,Minnesota, and Oklahoma as they handed PennState three of its four regular season losses in2009. Versus the Sooners a year ago, PSU postedits highest team total of the season in a victory inNorman, scoring a 356.300.
