It’s onward and upward for the 2009-2010 Commodore swim-ming and diving team, as the squad welcomes back eight letter winners with valuable experience under their belts after a busy year. Vanderbilt is on the rise in just its fourth season since bring-ing the program back in September of 2006 after a 14-year ab-sence and looks to build off a record-breaking campaign.

This year’s team has three upperclassmen; Jennifer Molchan, Anna Fargo and Jess Cohen. Cohen is the team’s lone senior.

The third year since the return was a tremendous success as the Commodores re-wrote the school record books and improved across the board en route to putting up their best times of the season at the Southeastern Conference Championships hosted by Auburn. Vanderbilt set six school records and tied another in a landmark season despite having nine freshmen and 15 total underclassmen out of 19 on the roster. The Commodores also won their first meets since re-starting the program in December of 2006, capturing victories over Centre and Rhodes in a dual meet they hosted in October at the Centennial Sportsplex.

Head coach Jeremy Organ enters his fourth year in charge of Van-derbilt and expects to continue seeing what has come to mark this team over the past three seasons: progress.

“I think that we’ve just got to try keep getting better,” Organ said. “I’m not really sure if we need to worry about wins or losses so much as each individual getting better. Because of that, we should get more successful as far as the wins and losses go.

“The next goal is to hopefully, within the next year or two, have our first SEC win, which is going to be a difficult task. That’s a pretty big jump, a pretty big goal. But I think it’s one we have to strive for.”

The Commodores welcome eight new swimmers in this year’s freshman class that gives Organ the deepest team he’s had in his tenure.

Rose Cornelson, Erika Deardorf, Jessica Eccher, Betsy Galenti, Ellen Kilgore, Sarah Lynch, Chelsea Morey and Amelia Salce make up the team’s class of 2013, while sophomore Stephanie Falcone will join the Commodores after swimming for Loyola (Md.) last year. All nine of the newcomers boast top-notch resumes in competitive swimming for their high school and club teams.

“It’s a very balanced class, and I think it’s one that’s going to be very competitive all four years,” Organ said. “I think we can go out with a pretty solid team now. We don’t give up anything anymore because of being so young.”

Despite having one of the youngest teams in the nation last year, Vanderbilt still enjoyed considerable success.

Sophomore Jennifer Molchan, freshman Allie Voss and freshman Laura Dillon all set school records in their events at the Vander-bilt’s final event of the year, the SEC Championships, demonstrat-ing the level of progress the team made during the season.

Molchan broke a 19-year Vanderbilt mark in the 100-yard free-style, swimming a remarkable time of 52.21. Dillon broke an old record in the 100-yard breaststroke in the fall but Voss topped it at the SEC’s with a 1:05.78. Dillon also set the 200-yard breaststroke school record in the fall and then broke her own mark at the SEC’s with a 2:19.56, beating her old time by nearly three seconds.

Two 19-year relay records also fell at the SEC’s. The team of Molchan, Voss and freshmen Kelly Obranowicz and Zoe Cooper-

Surma, broke the school record in the 200-yard medley relay by nearly a full second with a 1:46.31. Molchan, Voss, Obranowicz and sophomore Anna Fargo also topped the 400-yard freestyle relay school record at the SEC’s with a 3:30.66.Diver Nicole Woodworth made her presence known in her fresh-man season, breaking Patti Woodcock’s 22-year old school re-cord in the one-meter dive against South Carolina with a score of 288.53. She also tied Woodcock’s 1987 mark in the three-meter dive in the same meet.

The youngest team in the powerful SEC wasn’t fazed by the level of competition, and their hard work during the year was evident as the Commodores constantly broke their own best times and competed closely with elite swimmers and divers from around the country. As well as hosting two meets, Vanderbilt also went to Houston for the Phil Hansel Duals and to Western Kentucky for the Hilltopper Invitational. The team also locked horns with SEC teams Alabama, Tennessee, Arkansas and South Carolina in hard-fought meets, all on the road.

At the SEC Championships, Vanderbilt shined, with 17 swimmers setting at least one personal record in the final meet of the sea-son. The Commodores also posted team-best times of the season in eight different events. Riding that wave of momentum into this season, the team has both the ability and the desire to make the program one of the conference’s best.

In addition, Organ expects the Commodores to continue to have a strong camaraderie that he has seen grow from season to season while coaching in Nashville.

“I really think this class of kids coming in, that this group that we now have, that team is going to be very close, which is only going to help us when times get tough,” Organ said. “In some of those dual meets or tough times during the season when the academic part is stressing on everybody and the swimming part is starting to get hammer-down on them, that group cohesiveness is really going to start to pay off.”

To that end, the many returning Commodores are going to be looked to for guidance by the team’s new swimmers.

“I think that’s huge, especially with the size of the group coming in. These girls that now have now a year or two years under them are going to help that transition for the freshmen, because it is pretty tough,” Organ said. “It’s not easy to just walk in and go to school here, and the first semester is pretty important as far as training goes for the swimming. We get going right away. It’s a pretty tough adjustment, so I think that with those girls that have been here, done that, now it’s going to make that transition easier for those freshmen.”

If they make as good a transition as Vanderbilt’s other swimmers did in their first seasons, then this could be a special season for the Commodore program.

Jeremy Organ enters his fourth season as the head coach of the Vanderbilt swimming and diving team. Constant improvement has been the theme of the Commodores under Organ, as nearly every team member posted their season-best marks at the end of the season in the SEC Championships. Vanderbilt finished 10th but strides were made across the board. Three years of hard work have laid the foundation for what Or-gan hopes to be a landmark 2009-2010 season. The Commodores captured their first dual meet victories since resurrecting the team three years ago when they defeated Centre and Rhodes last fall. Organ welceomes seven recruits to this year’s team to join an ex-perienced roster that has re-written the record books, breaking six schools marks last season alone. Now, his goal is for Vanderbilt to have more success in the Southeastern Conference, which features some of the toughest opposition in the country year in and year out. “We’ve come a long way,” Organ said. “This is our third recruiting class coming in. Now we’ve really got to start looking at the highest levels in the sport. Now we should be at a point where we can start looking at the next block. I think we’ve got to start looking at a bigger picture, instead of just saying, ‘Oh, we’re new.’” In 2006, Organ directed the first swim team at Vanderbilt since the 1992 season when the university was forced to drop the team. The Commodores finished the season with an 0-3 dual meet record and finished 10th at the team’s first Southeastern Conference meet since 1992. Before coming to Vanderbilt, Organ served as the head senior assistant/head masters coach of the Nashville Aquatic Club, one of swimming’s most competitive club teams. While coaching the NAC, Organ mentored six national championship qualifiers in addition to assisting 20 swimmers earn Division I scholarships. Organ also served as the senior coach at the Greater Pensacola Aquatic Club. While in Pensacola, the club produced several na-tional qualifiers and national age group top-16 swimmers. Organ enjoyed a highly successful collegiate career, swimming at the University of North Dakota. While at UND, Organ was a six-time All-American. Organ also earned North Central Conference Swim-mer of the Year honors in 1995. Following graduation, Organ stayed with North Dakota to become Head Assistant Coach from 1996-2000. He helped establish the swimming strength and conditioning program, supervising student-athlete’s academic progress and implementing community service programs. While working as a coach at UND, Organ also served as the head coach for the Forks Area Swim Team. During that time, he garnered North Dakota Age Group Coach of the Year honors in 1998 and 1999. Organ also has extensive experience in overseeing the growth of several swim programs, including the Great Pensacola Aquatic Club, where he nearly doubled the senior swim program in just two years. Also, while Organ was with the Nashville Aquatic Club, the

program grew from 250 participants in 2002, to over 300 swimmers in 2005. A native of British Columbia, Organ is married to the former Mar-garet Davidson. They are the proud owner of two dogs, Nash and Napa.

Krysten Nemecek enters her second season as the as-sistant swimming coach and recruiting coordinator for Vanderbilt. Head coach Jeremy Organ was impressed with her first year with the Commodores. “She learned a lot,” Organ said. “It was a learning year for her, which is always hard, especially when you’re young. I think she did very well, and I think it’s only going to get better with her.” Nemecek played a big hand in bringing in one of Van-derbilt’s best recruiting classes in the history of the pro-gram in 2009, by signing seven new swimmers and one walk-on to the Commodore program. Before coming to Vanderbilt, Nemecek spent three years as the head swim team coach for the Serenata Beach Club in Ponte Vedra, Fla. She was responsible for devel-oping the swimmers based on their seperate skill levels. Outside of the pool, Nemecek excelled in the classroom. In May ‘08, Nemecek graduated with Magna Cum Laude honors in Health Administration from University of North Florida. En route to attaining her degree, she was named to the Atlantic Sun Conference All-Academic team four times. As a senior at North Florida, Nemecek posted five first-place finishes and 21 top-three finishes.

THE COMMONS

On-Campus Living At Its Best

First-Year Students Enjoy RareCollegiate Living Experience In August of 2008, Vanderbilt officially opened The Commons, providing first-year students with one of the nation’s truly unique and mod-ern on-campus residential communities. Built on six acres in the southeast quadrant of the Vanderbilt campus, The Commons in-cludes ten residence halls or Houses, spa-cious study and social areas, and the show-piece Commons Center, a modern dining and activity hub, all located on the Peabody cam-pus. Vanderbilt officials believe The Commons will provide first-year students a truly special living/learning experience. Bringing scholars, leaders, teachers and learners together to cre-ate a vibrant intellectual community is at the

heart of The Commons. It will be home to both new students and an extraordinary connection of people, ideas and opportunities that distinguish the Vanderbilt experience. The Commons Center also features the Eatery, the place to dine with friends and study with classmates. At the Commons Cafe, students, faculty and staff can develop friendships while listening to Vanderbilt and Nashville musicians. While all new students to Vanderbilt will reside in The Commons, plans are underway to eventually replace or renovate existing facil-ities to complete College Halls at Vanderbilt, the university’s future residential college system.

The Centennial Sportsplex is the home of the Vanderbilt swimming and diving team, where the Commodores train and host meets. The Commodores hosted and won their first dual meets since their return when they defeated Centre and Rhodes in October of 2008, and they also hosted Marshall for a meet in January of 2009. In fall of 2008, a state-of-the-art digital scoreboard was in-stalled on the east side of the competition pool, allowing spec-tators and coaches to see the electronic times of all competing lanes. Opened in 1990, the Centennial Sportsplex is Middle Tennes-see’s ultimate fitness, recreation and sports complex. A $20 million, 145,000 square-foot facility, the Sportsplex is a year-round facility for ice skating, fitness, swimming and tennis. The Aquatics Center contains two pools, including a 50 meters by 25 yards competition pool. There is also a diving well with a depth of 14 feet that has two one-meter and two three-meter spring boards. The Sportsplex also contains an Ice Center, complete with two full-size ice rinks. The National Hockey League’s Nash-ville Predators hold their practices in the Sportsplex’s Ice Center. A 2,400 square foot fitness center is also located at the Sportsplex. The fitness center contains weight machines, treadmills, stair machines, exercise cycles and rowing.

The Sportsplex has hosted exciting national events such as the US Senior and Junior National Swim meets, the YMCA National Swim Meet, the U.S. Water Polo Olympic Trials, the US Figure Skating Championships, the Virginia Slims Tennis Championships and the USTA Women’s Challenger.
