Portraits 1 Portraits If the doors of perception were open, everything would seem just as it is: endless. W. Blake. I keep the portrait of a woman in mind. I remember its reproduction in the book of history of art. What couldn’t be understood, her beauty that was locked up in there. I think of the distances covered to visit a monument, of the energies spent walking in order to see a live work of art which speaks of something and somebody who is no longer with us. I remember Olympia by Manet and the bow of black ribbon round her neck. I recall my visit to the Vasari Corridor: a large collection of self-portraits on displays eyes exchanging noisy glance. I want to tell about the people I met and that wanted to speak of themselves, about those whom I saw from a distance and I couldn’t put questions to. I want to hear from people who speak another language something about their lives. I’d like to know if they want to change their minds. I might change my mind.
